Since I already have 112 followers (for which I sincerely thank you dear friends <3) I thought it might be nice to write something about myself and get to know each other better. I will write in two languages Polish and English, okay? Let's get started!
English version:
Good morning! My name is Gabby/Gabi, I am from Poland and I am 22 years old. I am very pleased to meet you all ^^ I am interested in reading books (fantasy, detective stories), listening to music (classic rock, heavy metal) and I LOVE The Witcher, especially Heart of Stone. As it is not hard to guess - Olgierd von Everec is my favorite character. And here I will take a little break, because I want to recommend a wonderful person and a wonderful artist @karabelasthings on this site who also loves Olgierd like me. Greetings warmly and take a look at her profile! I am also a big fan of tattoos and so far I have 3 of them (I will do the fourth one soon). I also love the work of Vincent van Gogh whom I consider my idol. I... that's probably it. I may not be a very interesting person, but my messages are always open, so if you'd like to make friends or just chat, you're welcome! I try to be here regularly every day so I will definitely write back. See you around and have a nice day <3
Polish version:
I... to chyba tyle. Do zobaczenia i miłego dnia <3

Semifinals: Round 7 of 8
Tumblr media Tumblr media
propaganda and summaries are under the cut (May include spoilers)
Doctor Who (2005): 5.10 Vincent and the Doctor
Tw: is about Vincent Van Gogh so does deal with self harm, depression, and suicide (but not graphically, just this is what happened in his life and they acknowledge it)
The Doctor and Amy travel back in time to meet Vincent Van Gogh and face an invisible monster that only the painter can see.
Not the showiest or even the best episode of Dr Who, but the one that I can’t watch without tearing up at the end. Really well written and performed and generally gorgeous to watch as well. I first saw it when I was ten and the speech at the end has imprinted on my brain and given me a language to help understand the ups and downs that life brings. It’s just a lovely one.

M*A*S*H: 11.16 Goodbye, Farewell and Amen
In the closing days of the Korean War, the staff of the 4077 M*A*S*H Unit find themselves facing irrevocable changes in their lives.
LITERALLY the most episode ever. For American television broadcasts it remains the most-watched primetime television episode ever, beaten only by a number of Super Bowls, the moon landing, and the Nixon resignation.

Twins
Visiting a military plane demonstration, you wait in line to see inside the planes parked on the runway. You get jostled hard by a rude man and almost fall down from the steps. A nearby military officer in a black balaclava catches you. He is clearly irritated to be here, but you try to flirt a little anyway, asking him if he saves many damsels in distress.
Before he can respond, you hear a scream, then quickly following the sound, more screams. You see a handful of people start attacking bystanders. Springing into action, you help usher many to safety, yelling commands at them to get them moving toward a nearby gate. You don't notice the masked man doing the same thing until you see a woman running past you with a knife in her hand, aiming at him. Acting on pure instinct, you tackle her, knocking it out of her hands. Suddenly, you are in a fierce fight to keep her from grabbing it again. She strikes at you where she can, hitting you fiercely as her desire to continue her attack takes priority over all else. She carves deep gouges in your face with her fingernails, making you panic slightly. You grab her ear and yank, tearing part of it free, releasing a gout of blood. She stops attacking momentarily, and the masked man is there helping you. He zip ties her hands behind her back and tells you to sit on her while grumbling about civilians getting involved. You jokingly tell him you couldn't stand owing a favor and wink up at him before waving him off to go help others.
As you sit, she screams and curses and fights, trying to get free. Finally, irritated beyond belief by her antics, you threaten to Vincent Van Gogh her ear and cut it the rest of the way off. It takes some time, but things finally calm down, and medics make the rounds, triaging and helping everyone who was injured in the attack. A medic and a few military personnel take charge of the woman before your turn for a medic finally comes. He takes one look at you, and he immediately sends you to the line to wait for the hospital. You are a lower priority than most despite needing stitches for your still bleeding wounds, so you wait quietly. A man with a mohawk wanders over with the masked man, asking for your statement. He introduces himself as Soap and the masked man as Ghost, who remains silent. You tell Soap what you saw and did, then joke quietly, "I couldn't seize the day, so I seized an ear." He chuckles, and you glance at Ghost. "I hope to see you around," you say with a bloody smile, but you can't manage a wink past the swelling of your face as they load you into an ambulance. At the hospital, you are treated for a broken clavicle, two broken fingers, and the gouges on your face, which need stitches.
On Monday, you report to your new commanding officer. It takes extra time to get on base because the gate guards are on high alert and very suspicious of your bandaged face. When you finally get to his office, Captain Price is surprised at the injuries you are sporting. You explain what happened, and he smirks at your mention of Ghost but doesn't say anything. He gives you a quick tour, showing you the med bay, mess hall, and your quarters before continuing on with the rest of his day.
You slowly carry your things from your vehicle to your quarters, having packed everything in small boxes so they aren't too heavy, determined not to need help. You are on the last load when Soap nearly runs into you in the hall. He recognizes you despite your bandages and quickly takes the box out of your hands despite your protests, carrying it to your room for you.
"So, what are ye movin in here for, lass? Fall in love with someone at the airshow," he asks, waggling his eyebrows at you.
You laugh, "No, just the new doctor for the team."
He looks dubiously at your injuries, and you roll your eyes, "Can't a girl save a man without it coming back to bite her?"
He laughs and takes his leave late for a meeting. When you go to lunch, he waves you over to sit, knowing how much it sucks to be the new guy. Ghost sits across from you without looking and strikes up a conversation with Soap about some upcoming training. When you laugh at a joke that Soap makes, he finally looks up and does a double-take.
"Damsel, what are you doing here?"
"New doc," Soap choruses.
"Doc, we need to get you trained in grappling," Ghost grumbles, looking over your injuries.
"Sure, in about 3 months when I can lose the sling," you quip.
"I'll reserve the room," he says flatly, undeterred by your current state.
"That's an estimate, not a guarantee, Ghost."
"Yes, that is why you will bulk up on protein and heal faster." He picks up his tray and shoves the meat off it and onto yours.
You stare at him for a long moment before saying, "No thanks... I'll just eat MY food." His glare leaves no room for argument, so you turn away, but you can still feel his eyes on you. You grumble as you eat a bite, and he smirks before turning back to his own tray. The moment he looks away, you shove the meat back on his plate and stand to leave. His "Oi!" calling after you makes you want to grin, though the stitches prevent it as you hurry off.
At the end of the week, you are glad to be able to remove the stitches. You wait until after hours, setting yourself in front of a mirror, snipping, and pulling them out. A boot scuff tells you that you're not alone. "Clinic is closed. If it's an emergency, I can treat you, but otherwise, you'll have to wait until tomorrow." There is no answer, and you look around seeing no one. But you know what you heard. You go back to pulling stitches, but shift your position a bit, protecting the arm in a sling in case someone decides to attack you again.
"You know you can have someone else pull those, right?" Ghost's voice floats to you.
"Damn place is haunted. I'm hearing ghosts talk to me," you say, chuckling to yourself.
He huffs and walks out of the darkness to stand behind you. "I'm just saying you don't have anything to prove."
"I'm not trying to prove anything. I'm just working to minimize the scarring." You say it flippantly, but he can see the slight frown on your face as you look at the injuries.
"All I see is a hero, but I do understand. You could always mask up like me." He says it jokingly, but you consider it.
"Not the worst idea. But a bally isn't my style. Wouldn't want to copy your thing." You finish pulling stitches after a few more minutes of silence and turn to face him, but he has disappeared into the shadows again. "See if I invite you over for tea, then." You hear a chuckle fading off in the distance and smile despite yourself.
The next day, you have a grimace on your face the entire day, seeing others stare at your now stitch-less but still injured face. Ghost conspicuously doesn't look, and Soap tries to joke about others being jealous, but it falls flat. You've never been a vain person. You can't help being self-conscious, though. Your frustration peaks when a nurse stares slack jawed at you for nearly ten straight minutes, prompting you to put on a surgical mask. It helps slightly, but the gouges are still visible on the rest of your face. You think about it all day and come up with a solution.
That night, you furiously stitch a flower printed bamboo t-shirt into a mask, carefully cutting and sewing it to drape across your face. You make a square block for your eyes, making sure it is smooth and not going to irritate your healing skin. Donning it, you make a few adjustments, stitching the arms shut except for a slit near your ears to fit a surgical mask as needed, and you stitch the neck of the shirt closed. The end result is a cute, breathable mask that hides all of the scarring except a line near your eyes. It's perfect even if it covers almost your entire face.
The stares you get the next week are still nerve-wracking, but they lessen as the time goes on. Ghost simply throws a smirk your way while Soap laments the loss of another friend with a wink at you, not able to stop himself from teasing. You shut down your staff when they try to bring it up. Captain Price shoots you a sad look and a nod. He would clearly prefer you didn't hide, but he understands. Your work maintains its same level of quality, so he simply marks the preference to hide your face in your file and moves on. The first person to complain about your supposed lack of professionalism to him is told to "fuck off right to hell, you daft prick," professionally... in those exact words.
A few months in, your sling is finally off, and you spend several hours a week grappling with Soap and Ghost as promised. Ghost even trains you in using a knife in combat, quipping that you can switch to your scalpel when the lessons are finished. The scars on your face are growing darker, becoming more and more apparent as time goes on. The mask will stay. When the Captain tries to discuss it gently, you lift the bottom, showing him the edges of the scars. The dark purple and red lines against your pale skin couldn't be anymore obvious. He nods with a quiet, "Understood, Major."
After Ghost shows you many techniques and hones your skills, he brings you into the recruit class one day a week. The goal is to help you maintain those skills and learn against different opponents who are less skilled than him. The first time you begin to win a fight, the recruit yanks off your mask despite specific instructions not to do so, hoping to stun you. Instead, you get angry and knock him over onto his stomach, one arm pinned under him and the other under your left foot with your right knee on his back. Calmly, you pull your mask from his hand and work to drape it back over your face. Glancing up, you see that Ghost is standing over you, blocking the other recruits from staring and absolutely furious on your behalf. You climb off the recruit, and the young man gets the tongue lashing of a lifetime and is then smoked in front of the rest of the recruits. The dirty trick doesn't happen again.
It's nine months after you first started working on base when a new man joins the team. You meet him at lunch, looking up and giggling when you realize you have very similar masks on. Soap makes a joke about the two of you being twins, but Ghost just stares at both of you.
König, as he is called, is immediately infatuated with you. He begins wooing you immediately, his eyes never straying to anyone else. He wants to see you wear his mask, watch your eyes roll up in your mask as you cum on him. He wants to see the face beneath the mask fall apart. It doesn't take long for every fantasy of his to come true... and a few of your own. You never feel self-conscious of your scarring around him. He worships you and your scars every chance he gets. But you still wear the mask every day for the rest of your life and sometimes his if you want to rile him up.

THURSDAY HERO: Mildred Harnack
Mildred “Mili” Harnack was a writer and academic from Wisconsin who moved to Berlin with her German husband in 1930. As Hitler rose to power, Mili created the largest resistance group in Nazi Germany and was targeted for execution by the Fuhrer himself.
Mili was born Mildred Fish in Milwaukee in 1902. Her father William was a teacher, and her mother Georgina was an activist for women’s suffrage. Mili had a natural facility with languages, and was fluent in German by the time she reached adulthood. Throughout her life, Mili loved German literature and culture. She attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison, where she majored in English literature. Mili lived in a rooming house popular with writers, and worked as a film and drama critic for a local newspaper.
After receiving her BA, Mili went on to earn an MA in English in 1925. The next year she moved back to Milwaukee and worked as a lecturer at the Milwaukee State Normal School (now the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee.) She met Arvid Harnack, a German economist and lawyer who was studying at the university on a Rockefeller fellowship. Arvid was from a prominent family of German intellectuals. After a whirlwind love affair, they were married in August 1926 at her brother’s farm. Arvid’s fellowship ended and he returned to Germany, followed by Mili the year later, after she completed a teaching session at Goucher College in Baltimore.
In Germany, Mili worked on her doctoral thesis and lectured at universities in German cities Jena and Giessen. The country was plunging deeper into political turmoil, and the Nazi party was rising to power amid the chaos. More than half of Mili’s students were outspoken Nazis. She moved to Berlin in 1930 to be with her husband, and began working as an assistant lecturer in English and American literature at the University of Berlin. Mili lectured about her favorite English and American writers including Ralph Waldo Emerson, Walt Whitman, Thomas Hardy and George Bernard Shaw. She was so popular with students that in just a year and a half, enrollment in the class tripled.
Mili connected with other American expatriates in Berlin and formed a literary salon where anti-Nazi academics and intellectuals could express themselves freely. By 1934, the Nazi secret police were everywhere and the salon was disbanded. Fellow ex-pat Martha Dodd, a close friend of Mili’s, later described her Berlin salon as “the last of the meager remnants of free thought.” Many of those who had participated in the salons continued to meet in the Harnacks’ living room but instead of discussing literature, they planned anti-Nazi political activism
Meanwhile, Mili achieved renown as a writer. She published essays in prominent German literary journals until the mid-30’s, when magazines started to print only “approved opinions” (in support of Hitler). She was able to continue working as a translator, and her German-language translation of Irving Stone’s biography of Vincent van Gogh, Lust for Life, was published in 1936.
Mili returned to the U.S. on a book tour in 1937, and her old friends were shocked at the drastic change in her personality. Earlier she had been friendly and easy-going, but four years living under Nazi rule made Mili anxious, stiff and guarded. She’d had to wear a metaphorical mask to survive in the totalitarian German state, and couldn’t shed the mask even when she left Europe. Mili’s family urged her to stay in the U.S. but she was determined to return to her husband and her political activism group, now called “The Circle.”
Mili’s unassuming manner combined with an extremely sharp intellect enabled her to penetrate the highest circles of German politics and diplomacy. She used these connections to get exit and travel visas for Jewish friends and colleagues, among them prominent publisher Max Tau. Mili also surreptitiously gleaned information from highly placed contacts, which she transmitted to fellow members of the resistance.
Mildred was fired from her teaching job at the University of Berlin because of her political beliefs, and she began teaching at night school, where her students were mostly working class or unemployed. She recruited many of them to join The Circle. The group published anti-Nazi leaflets, written by Mildred, and secretly left stacks of them in public places throughout the city.
German intelligence called them “the Red Orchestra” and falsely smeared them as communists working for the Soviets. Undeterred, the group increased their activities and cooperated with other resistance units. Around this time Mili wrote, “I saw it clearly before my eyes. From then on our work not only implies the risk of losing our freedom, from now on death was a possibility.” Led by Mili, The Circle became the largest resistance group in Nazi Germany. They incited civil disobedience against the Nazi regime, documented Nazi atrocities, and transmitted military intelligence to the Allies.
In the summer of 1942, the Nazis intercepted radio transmissions that revealed the identity of prominent resistance fighters including the Harnacks. On September 7, Mili and Arvid were arrested by the Gestapo and imprisoned. Arvid was tried by the Reich Military Tribunal and sentenced to death on December 19. He was hanged three days later at Plotzensee Prison.
Mili languished in a squalid prison cell for months, where she was tortured and contracted tuberculosis. She went on trial and was sentenced to six years in prison. However, Hitler heard about the American woman who fought so effectively against his regime, and he ordered a new trial for Mili. The kangaroo court delivered a pre-determined death sentence, and at Hitler’s explicit request Mili was beheaded by guillotine on February 16, 1943. Her last words were, “And I have loved Germany so much!” After her execution, Mili’s body was given to an anatomy professor at Humboldt University to dissect for research. After he finished, he gave the rest of her remains to a friend of hers, who had Mili buried in Zehlendorf Cemetery in Berlin.
The only writing that survived from her time in prison were a few translated lines from Goethe: “In all the frequent troubles of our days/A God gave compensation – more his praise/In looking sky-and heavenward as duty/In sunshine and in virtue and in beauty.”
Mildred’s brave actions and tragic death have not been forgotten. In Berlin, a street and a school are named for her, and in her native Wisconsin schools observe Mildred Fish Harnack Day. The University of Wisconsin-Madison hosts an annual Mildred Fish-Harnack Human RIghts and Democracy Lecture, and a sculpture of Mili was unveiled in Madison in 2019.
For fighting Hitler at the cost of her own life, we honor Mildred Harnack as this week’s Thursday Hero.

Hiiiiiiiiiiiii. Ok let me introduce myself. my name is seri. I’m a master shifter and my main destinations are different points in history. I have no idea why history isn’t more popular in the shifting community. Like the things I’ve experienced first hand are amazing. Like I’ve seen things with my own eyes that we learn about in history textbooks. It’s the most amazing experience. I’ve been to alot of drs too like hogwarts, mcu, fame, love dr, avatar and so many more but nothing compares to seeing our worlds history for myself.
Some of my fave times I’ve been too: ( I changed my gender to a boy for most of these drs because I wouldn’t be able to experience it properly as a woman because of the time periods and I didn’t want to change history )
The making of the pyramids
Cleopatras ruling
King Tutankhamen
The making of the Great Wall of China
The first man to land on the moon ( I scripted I was a part of crew for the mission )
Queen Elizabeth the firsts ruling
The independence of America
The battle of Hastings
Ancient Greek
Ancient Rome
Seeing the Mona Lisa being made
Meeting Vincent Van Gogh
The Black Death ( I didn’t go to see people die I lived as a part of the government cause I always wanted to know how they tried to deal with it. There was so much panic )
Seeing Martin Luther kind jr give his “ I have a dream” speech in person
The crowning of queen elizabeth the seconds coronation
Meeting William Shakespeare
The Christmas truce
Pompeii before it way destroyed ( it was beautiful )
Seeing the 7 wonders of the ancient world
Hanging garden of babylon
Seeing ancient structures when they were actually In use ( the colosseum, temple of Hera, so many more I can’t even list )
Getting the great honour to learn kalaripayattu in ancient India
And genuinely just getting to live life seeing these people go about their own lives. Beautiful
I’m not going to list anymore cause there so many but I have experienced the beginning of the first humans millions of years ago to the making of the I phone. I am so honoured I get to experience these events and meet the people in the stories we learn. It’s crazy because to us it’s this amazing history we can only imagine but to them it’s just life. They no nothing else. They don’t know how truely incredible they are in our history. I can’t wait to experience more. Maybe one day I’ll even go into the future. Who knows.
Also something else I did was meet Van Gogh and take him to the dr future to the Van Gogh museum so he can see he wasn’t a failure. So he could see he made it. I took this idea after watching doctor who and it was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. I still get chills. To see this man who died thinking he was nothing getting to see a the future where he is known as one of the greatest artists of all time. My favorite shifting experience ever
Woooaaahhhh!! That's like suppoerr cooll!! I'm so happy for you and that is such a cool idea ajajajsk😭❣️

Tumblr media
You're obsessed with TV. Not with horror movies, or movies in general, or any kind of sitcom. You're obsessed with TV. The device. How can a metal tub display so many images? How something can be aired by a TV channel and make half way through the world until your home? And if you press a buton... it changes. It just changes.
Don't matter how much science evolves, somethings are better when explained by magic. Just like lightning. There was a time when people would tell stories about Zeus to a kid who questioned why it's lightning, and now, because of science, people have to admit that they don't fucking know.
But you don't really care about how a TV works. What you really care, the reason for you to spend so much time in front of it, its the colors. Oh, the colors. Before you started seeing them, you convinced yourself that they weren't that big of a deal. People were exagerating. But they weren't.
Northem lights. Emeralds. The starry sky. Monarchy butterfly. Blur view in front of a traffic light. Pomegranates. Sparks flying. Fireworks. Red lipstick. Vincent van Gogh.
It took you some time to understand that your reality changed, your favorite movie turned into your life, and for a time it was scary as hell. But then you meet them. You saw colors. And maybe, just maybe, that was the universe being generous. Because to let you see all those things, feel all that love, can only be an act of compassion.
"You look like a child", Stu threw himself on the sofa, making you bounce. "What's so excited about Clueless? That's the millionth time you watch it."
"Everything about Clueless is perfect", you yawned. Straightening your posture, you rubbed your eyes. You haven't blinked in a while. "It's so colorful."
You thought Stu would laugh, but he didn't. "I'm rewatching every Nightmare on Elm Street because I love the red tone of Freddy's blouse."
"Seven movies?" Stu agreed. "You don't have time to watch a single episode of Kenan & Kel with me, but have time to rewatch seven movies?"
Stu pulled you closer, almost causing you to drop the popcorn on the floor. It still surprises you how strong he really is. He slipped his fingers inside your shirt, icy fingers ruffling your hips. Stu tried to kiss you, but you stuffed your mouth with popcorn.
"Oh... That's how it is then? Ok." Stu filled his hand with popcorn stuffed it on his mouth. He chewed a bit before saying something that sounded almost like: "This is a game for two."
Before you could react, Stu kissed you. It was the most disgusting thing that have ever happened to you. Drooling popcorn fall out of both of your mouths because it was impossible to not laugh. You coughed, choking on a grain, and all the excess popcorn flew right into his face.
"Can someone remind me why i'm with you two?"
It was Billy who was speaking, but that wasn't his voice. As you turned toward the door, Ghostface was leaning against the frame. Your heart nearly jumped out of your chest at the sight of blood glistening on the black fabric.
"Fate", that probably was what Stu were trying to say. He laughed, and coughed the rest of popcorn on his mouth into the plastic bucket. "Luck. Chance."
"Are you okay?" You were trying to be serious, but the popcorn got in your way. "Someone hurted you?"
Billy threw the voice modulator away, and walked towards you in silence. You had already swallowed the rest of the popcorn when he bent down to your height. Billy braced his hands on the couch, each on either side of your head, and you could picture him smirking inside that fantasy.
"Don't I look fine, my love?" You could smell the blood. Billy carressed your cheek with his gloved hand, his thumb bumped into your lips. You kissed it. "Do you think someone can hurt me?"
"I can!" Stu shouted.
"Shut up, Shaggy." You snapped. Looking back to Billy, you pouted. "You're late."
Billy carressed you bottom lip a last time before moving away from you both. "Clueless? Again?" Billy took the mask off. He was fine. Billy was safe and sound. "You will never get tired of it?"
"It's colorfull", Stu explained, filling more popcorn on his mouth. When he realized why it was wet, he spat and put the bucket on the floor.
"Do you have room for me there?" Billy pointed to the couch.
"Of course we do", Stu took the control without you noticing. "Movie marathon? I vote on Hannibal."
"I hate that I'll have to wait until 2005 to watch Pride & Prejudice", you complained. You noticed Billy taking the fantasy off. "You better take a shower. You won't stain my couch."
"We'll see about that."

Your Body Is My Canvas - Vincent van Gogh x Reader (Ikemen Vampire)
Tumblr media
A/N: Happy Birthday Vincent!
Pairing: Vincent x Reader
Prompt: Reader wants a tattoo, but Vincent has thoughts
Word Count: 477
Tags: fluff with the slightest hint of spice at the end
Tumblr media
“Stay still,” Vincent said softly, his long fingers wrapping around your wrist, his grip firm as he held you in place.
“It tickles.”
“Sorry,” Vincent apologized. His bright blue eyes, clear as the sky above, flicked up momentarily to meet yours, his attention immediately returning to his work. “I’m almost done.”
His touch was ever so gentle as he brushed the last pink petal onto your skin, completing his work.
“There,” he said, letting your wrist go free, your skin already missing his touch. Looking down at your forearm, you found a delicate branch of cherry blossoms now decorating your skin.
“I think this one might be my favorite.”
“You say that everytime.”
“But this time it’s true. I love it so much, I’d like to make it permanent….”
“No,” Vincent replied simply.
You looked at him confused. A few times, you had broached the idea of getting a tattoo of one of his pieces, but for one reason or another, nothing ever came to fruition. Someway, somehow, Vincent always skirted the idea and quickly changed the subject.
“Why?” you implored, admiring the artwork adorning your arm. “I can’t imagine a better way to show my love and appreciation of your art.”
“And mar your skin?” He traced an outline of the branches on your arm, the ghost of his touch sending sweet tingles throughout your body. He tilted your chin with his thumb, lifting your gaze to meet his. “You are my muse, and your body is my canvas. Every inch of your body is precious to me. While I appreciate your desire to make this permanent, that would take away space for future art.”
He took your hand in his; bringing your joined hands to his lips, he brushed a soft kiss across your knuckles. His blue eyes burned with an intense passion; the way he looked at you stirred a heat below your belly.
“I can always get a new canvas, I can’t get a new you.”
Heat rose to your cheeks at his words. Vincent had a way of making you feel things, forcing you to see yourself in a completely different light. Maybe it was the artist in him, how he saw the world in a different way than most, that he was able to do this.
With your free hand, you cupped his cheek and brought your face to meet his. “Okay,” you whispered, your lips melting into his in a sweet kiss.
“That and…” Vincent nipped at your lower lip, pleasure rippling through your body in gentle waves as his hand moved to caress your curves. “I don’t want anyone else to touch your body the way I do.”
Cradling your head, he gently guided your body to lie in the grass, hands still linked as you spent the remainder of the afternoon joined together under the cherry blossom tree.

What is your favourite Doctor Who story?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
TOURNAMENT MASTERPOST
synopses and propaganda under the cut
Vincent and the Doctor
Synopsis
While taking Amy to several peaceful locations, the Eleventh Doctor's trip to a museum takes turn for the worse: his interest is caught by a painting of a church by Vincent van Gogh. What troubles the Doctor is that there's a face in the church's window; it's not a nice face, it's a curious, shadowed, creepy face with a beak and nasty eyes. The Doctor knows evil when he sees it and this face is definitely evil; it may pose a threat to the one who painted it. Only one thing will calm the Doctor's nerves: a trip in the TARDIS to 1890 so he can find out from the artist himself.

The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances
Synopsis
Chasing a metallic object through the Time Vortex, the Ninth Doctor and his companion, Rose Tyler, arrive in London during the Blitz. While Rose meets "Captain Jack Harkness", the dashing Time Agent responsible for bringing the object, the Doctor finds a group of homeless children terrorised by Jamie, an "empty" child wearing a gas mask.

Doctor Who's Magnum Opus
TW: Mention of suicide.
It's Vincent and the Doctor. This is not up for debate, I am right. This is a hill I will die on. Vincent and The Doctor is the best 45 minutes of television ever put to screen.
But this post isn't only to gush, this post is to try and explain why the episode has such an emotional impact.
But I want to stress this: If you haven't already watched this episode, please do. You don't need to have watched Doctor Who before, pop culture osmosis has definitely filled you in on everything you need to know. Please give it a go.
SPOILERS AHEAD
Tumblr media
So, first up is the scene in which we meet Vincent. Its short, and the opening of the episode, but it's this shot:
Tumblr media
I am firmly of the belief that character introductions are some of the most important scenes in a story, and Van Gogh has a fascinating introduction. The opening few seconds give you the most important details of this new character, and it's his eyes. This episode is about how Vincent sees the world.
But the character introduction doesn't stop there. Still before the opening credits, the story starts again, this time in an art gallery with various folks talking about this historical painter. We get a child saying the following:
"He was the doctor who took care of Van Gogh when he started to go mad."
Tumblr media
Contrast this with Bill Nighy's character, Dr. Black, fanboying over Vincent, and we get the rest of this story explained to us. This is also a story about how the world sees Vincent.
Then we get Vincent's actual introduction, the point where our protagonists meet, and it is... understated.
Tumblr media
There's no ceremony about it, it just happens quietly. But there's something about Vincent's actions that I want to point out. He refuses help.
"You don't know three things. One, I pay for my own drinks thank you. Two, nobody ever buys any of my paintings or they'll be laughed out of town, so if you want to stay in town, I suggest you keep your cash to yourself. And three, your friend's cute."
I cannot understate how phenomenal of a line this is. It establishes lore, of course, but it also establishes Vincent's personality. This is a man who is down on his luck but cannot accept help. This is a man who is spiralling but refuses to be defended, justifying it as protecting someone else's honour.
At this point, the world sees Vincent in the same way he sees himself. He's mad, and an awful artist.
Tumblr media
But I know what scene you are waiting for me to mention. So here it is. Vincent in the gallery. That panoramic shot and the conversation with Bill Nighy.
Tumblr media
And again, its understated. On the surface of it, this is boring. Its just Vincent's face and some paintings and some sweet music. Bill Nighy doesn't even say anything we haven't heard him say before in this same episode. So why is it so influential?
Of course, one highlight is Tonny Curran's acting and how the camera frames it. In a story like this, the best special effect you can have is just a close-up of an actor earning their paycheck and then some. There is no loud weeping or ugly crying, this is so subtle, and so masterfully acted.
The other significant element is the context. I mentioned earlier that this episode is the contrast between how Vincent and the world saw each other. And up until now, Vincent and the world have been on the same page, but it's only here that the two views differ so much. Finally, Vincent is in a world where people unironically love his creations, where someone can fanboy over him without a care of being chased off, that's why this has such an effect. Not because of what it says, but because of what it does.
Tumblr media
But there's one more scene that I want to mention.
Vincent still commits suicide. They don't save him. I don't need to explain why that is heart-wrenching. But this final scene unpacks that and presents the following idea:
"Every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don't always soften the bad things, but vice versa the bad things don't necessarily spoil the good things or make them unimportant."
No, they didn't save Vincent. You can't do that in 45 minutes. But they did make a difference. They gave a man in pain some respite hope for the future, they made his life just that little bit better. And that's all anyone can ask to do.

“Continuing her publicity tour for the film (Rancho Notorious (1952)) in Los Angeles, Dietrich learned that the actor Kirk Douglas was ill with pneumonia after the dangerous river scenes of his recent film The Big Sky (1952). Although she had met him only once (through their mutual friend Billy Wilder), Dietrich at once swept down on Douglas, offering (as he later said), “soup [and] affectionate sex. But that was less than the mothering, the closeness. Marlene is an unusual person. She seemed to love you much more if you were not well. When you became strong and healthy, she loved you less.” The liaison was as brief as Douglas’ illness, which kept him bedridden only a few weeks that spring; their later meetings were infrequent, cordial and much less intimate.”
/ From the 1992 biography Dietrich by Donald Spoto /
Fun couple! Marlene Dietrich visits Kirk Douglas during production of his Vincent Van Gogh biopic Lust for Life (1956). Doesn’t Douglas look au courant with that rugged beard? And Dietrich could give a masterclass how to beautifully arrange your legs for maximum advantage.

propaganda and summaries are under the cut (May include spoilers)
