One thing about Dare me that I miss is the way Beth so desperately needed Addy and the way she did EVERYTHING for her. And Addy was either oblivious or she was using Beth. She wanted Beth to be there for her and do things for her but she didn't want to do the same. I love Beth so much that even at the end she was still trying to help Addy :/

"He moved closer and his smile reminded me of the wolf in bedtime stories. When I was a kid, whenever my sisters would tell me fairy tales, running their fingers up my arms and legs, I always felt it for the wolves. Narrow eyes, teeth glittering like a handsaw. The wolves were waiting, but you had to put yourself in a dangerous place first. You had to play your part. I would dream myself into the thicket, swinging a basket, whistling a tune, waiting for the growl, the flash of yellow eyes, the sudden pillage, the blood tear. The wolf got you where it counted."

omg I love Give Me Your Hand! I think it’s my favorite of her books that I’ve read and I also loved Dare Me and really liked You Will Know Me. Did you see the dare me tv show it’s My villain origin story wlw canceled show :/
omg yay! i love hearing about other Megan Abbott fans! 🥰 i won’t be sure if this one is my favorite until i finish but i love all of her books i’ve read! The Fever and Dare Me are currently at the top of my list but Dare Me was the first (and Addy is my Girl) i read by her so i admittedly have a huge soft spot for it! I love You Will Know Me, too! And the End of Everything was just soul-crushing but so good. I’ve even read a few of her like true pulp noir ones set in the 50s/60s!
you know, i actually didn’t even find out there was a tv adaptation until it was canceled! i still haven’t seen it, i definitely intend to, but it’s such a bummer they canceled it!

No one wanted to face the truth. That every family was a hothouse, a swamp. Its own atmosphere, its own rules. Its own laws and gods. There would never be any understanding from the outside. There couldn't be.

i. something gave you the nerve to touch my hand, it’s nice to have a friend. ii. you know those lonely people hate this, the way we’re always hand in hand, side by side. iii. she go hard, she just like a pro, she just wanna blow up. iv. i do what i want, crying in the bleachers and i said it was fun, i don’t need anything from anyone. v. i’ll be your sweet sugar muffin with the cream, but stay on my back for too long and i’ll spin ya. vi. you need the spotlight, you need to sit tight, you want a real fight. vii. let’s go for a drive and see the town tonight, there’s nothing to do but i don’t mind when i’m with you. viii. so i’m saying my goodbyes, goodbye to my good side, it only ever got me hurt. ix. took me, used me up, was i sweet enough? please tell me the truth, did you love me too? x. there’s a big black hole where my heart used to be and i wish that you would realize i’m all that you need. xi. missing you is like second nature. xii. they’ll talk about us and discover how we kissed and killed each other. xiii. we don’t have to go back to where we’ve been, i am the woman who wants you to win. xiv. you know i’m the one who put you up there, name in the sky, does it ever get lonely thinking you could live without me?

Not that anyone asked, but here my favorites of 2023 anyway:
Favorite Book – The Guest by Emma Cline. The central character is a black humor mix of Moll Flanders and Tom Ripley. Has a lot to say about our contemporary morass, too. Two of my most anticipated writers hit it out of the park this year as well with a couple of chillers, Elizabeth Hand with A Haunting on the Hill and Megan Abbot with Beware the Woman.
Favorite True Crime Book: I’m going with a reprint, House of Pain by Helen Garner. Usually I’m more of a just the facts type guy when it comes to the genre, but Garner’s subjective approach proves immensely moving. With a forward puzzlingly more about Janet Malcolm than Garner by industry striver Sarah Weinman, who has given me the high hat on several occasions.
Best Movie: This isn’t even an opinion, just fact – Killers of the Flower Moon is, as Fran Lebowitz said in her appearance (oration?) at the Michigan Theater, a masterpiece of world cinema. And shame on you if you didn’t see it on the big screen, as Marty intended. After the debacle of The Irishman, it was great to see him come up with this one.
Favorite Horror Movie: This is definitely the genre with the most pop these days, commercially and creatively, and saw several excellent ones, including sequels (Scream VI kept up the superior standard, but who guessed Evil Dead Rise would be so much scary fun). However I’m going with a true original, Talk to Me, which was, well, really creepy and nailed a disturbing ending.
Like it or not, there you have it – and if you’ve read this far, happy new year.

favorite megan abbott book!
either Give Me Your Hand or The Fever… I have recency bias for the Fever but need to reread Give Me Your Hand and Dare Me to say because I love all three books for different reasons.
Of the books of her I’ve read You Will Know Me is my *least* favorite but only in the sense it didn’t leave a lasting emotional impact on me and the other three did, it’s still a really good compelling book I was very into while actually reading it.

"Nothing seemed real anymore, he said, and there was no longer any difference between his waking life and his dream life. It was all the same and you had to realize it as the true state of grace, because that's what it was. And he wondered if she would feel as free as he did to taste everything, run his polluted tongue over the blackest ridges and furrows in the worst places. ...The darkness he felt all around, he said he'd had to decide a long time ago to swallow it whole."
