Zo…

2023 Book Review
Tumblr media
I read 95 books this year. Here's some of what I enjoyed and what I didn't, in genre or arbitrary categories:
Fave SFF books
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (Susanna Clarke)
Spinning Silver (Naomi Novik)
All Systems Red (Martha Wells)
The Library at Mount Char (Scott Hawkins)
Mammoths at the gates (Nghi Vo)
Gideon the Ninth (Tamsyn Muir)
Amberlough (Lara Elena Donnelly)
Fab m/m romances
Seven Summer Nights (Harper Fox)
The Lodestar of Ys (Amy Rae Durreson)
The Scottish Boy (Alex de Campi)
Magician (KL Noone)
Heated Rivalry (Rachel Reid)
Also Role Model and The Long Game (Rachel Reid)
The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen (KJ Charles)
The older ones
(recently published books can feel very samey after a while. The irony of these being old books but feeling like a breath of fresh air)
Tam Lin (Pamela Dean) (1991)
Swordspoint (Ellen Kushner) (1987)
Wise Children (Angela Carter) (1991)
Chronicle of a Death Foretold (Gabriel Garcia Marquez) (1981)
(more books under the cut)
Best atmosphere
The Likeness (Tana French)
The fun rereads
Scum Villain's Self-Saving System (MXTX_
Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (MXTX)
The King of Attolia (Megan Whalen Turner)
Empress of Salt and Fortune (Nghi Vo)
The Ruin of a Rake (Cat Sebastian)
The unexpected delight
(it's a biography, and I never anticipated feeling so engrossed in one of them)
The invention of Angela Carter (Edmund Gordon)
The one that hurts so good
Checkmate (Dorothy Dunnett)
Didn't quite love the books but adored the characters
The Dreamer Trilogy by Maggie Stiefvater (my typical experience of her stories)
The meh
Bardugo's Nikolai duology
Schwab's Darker Shades of Magic
The dreadful and my only DNF
A Taste of Gold and Iron (Alexandra Rowland)
Most bitterly disappointing
The third installment of Hall's billionaire series How to Belong with a Billionaire.
Biggest book hangover
Seven Summer Nights and Heated Rivalry
Best book boyfriend
ILYA ROZANOV
Most bonkers book
The Library at Mount Char (Scott Hawkins)
The "not sure I liked it but it'll definitely stay with me"
Some Desperate Glory (Emily Tesh)
The writing craft book that actually offered a new insight
The Heroine's Journey (Gail Carriger)
Overall, a decent year. My goal of completing series I'd started in the past and hadn't finished meant I subjected myself to some less enjoyable books, but I also read some excellent romances and fantasy novels, and I really enjoyed reading some older books, a practice I plan to continue.

3 & 17!
Somebody else asked about 17, so I’m just going to answer 3!
3. What were your top five books of the year?
This is so hard! I’m so bad at top anything (by what criteria? how do you compare wildly different things? what are categories even? what if I change my mind?) but I’m gonna do my best!
I’m leaving out The Lottery and Other Stories by Shirley Jackson, because I just rambled about it, and Silver in the Wood and The Drowned Country by Emily Tesh, which are all-time favorites and therefor exist in a different category. Anyway, in no particular order:
Fruiting Bodies by Kathryn Harlan, Paul Takes the Form of a Mortal Girl by Andrea Lawlor, The Women Could Fly by Megan Giddings, Siren Queen by Nghi Vo, and Slow Salt by Julia Armfield. I think.
Ask me about books!

Books, March - April 2023
Masters in This Hall - KJ Charles
Little Eyes - Samanta Schweblin, translated by Megan McDowell
Siren Queen - Nghi Vo
Everything is Okay - Debbie Tung [okay. so. this is, in the larger sense, a book about living with depression and anxiety, and there were absolutely multiple pages that I read and immediately said, “oh no, that’s too real,” (and then immediately photographed for future use), but in practice it’s as much or more a book about cognitive behavioral therapy, and while I don’t want to deny the utility of therapy exercises or the practice of learning to care for oneself, my god is it difficult to write about them without sounding eye-rollingly vapid]
She Who Became the Sun - Shelley Parker-Chan
The English Understand Wool - Helen DeWitt *

Ooh, ooh, 17, 21, 47 for the bookworm meme
17. Favorite finished book series.
How could I possibly choose just one? I'll pick, arbitrarily, the Queen's Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner. I finished the last book a few months ago, something I'd been putting off since it came out in 2020 because I didn't want the series to be over. It's only a matter of time til I do a full re-read.
21. The book(s) on your school reading list you actually enjoyed.
So many of them, honestly? It was always much rarer for me to NOT enjoy a novel I was assigned. A few that I loved in particular: Middlemarch (George Eliot), To the Lighthouse (Virginia Woolf), Wuthering Heights (Emily Brontë), Frankenstein (Mary Shelley), Ulysses (James Joyce), Wide Sargasso Sea (Jean Rhys), Daniel Deronda (George Eliot), Ceremony (Leslie Marmon Silko), Remains of the Day (Kazuo Ishiguro), Dubliners (James Joyce) .... I should stop or I WILL keep going. That's my top ten by virtue of being the first ten that came to mind.
47. What are the last three books you read?
Home by Nnendi Okorafor (Binti #2) Mammoths at the Gates by Nghi Vo (The Singing Hills Cycle #4) Tehanu by Ursula K LeGuin (Earthsea Cycle #4)
(I feel a little bad all of these are halfway through a series... I included the series names to put them in context 😂 every one of these was GREAT though, completely recommend!)

Note
End-of-year book asks: 3, 4, 6, 10, 12, 13, 15, 16, 17, 20, and 21!
3. What were your top five books of the year?
1 - Carpe Jugulum by Terry Pratchett
2 - Lonely Castle in the Mirror by Mizuki Tsujimura
3 - The Secret Lives of Church Ladies by Deesha Philyaw
4 - Black Water Sister by Zen Cho
5 - Recitatif by Toni Morrison
Warning: I changed my top once again and I will either post a video or make a new post with my top 10 favourites.
4. Did you discover any new authors that you love this year?
Sadly no. Even my favourite authors disappointed me this year: Patricia A. McKillip, Kazuo Ishiguro and Octavia E. Butler, to be more exact. It's always sad to find out that your favourite authors sometimes write stuff you dislike. I think Lloyd Alexander and Toni Morrison have the potential to become favourites though.
6. Was there anything you meant to read, but never got to?
I answered this one here.
10. What was your favorite new release of the year?
I'm glad my mom died by Jenette McCurdy. Easily. I haven't read many new releases and that was such a great book.
12. Any books that disappointed you?
Yes! Babel by R.F. Kuang. Babel, so much. I didn't even finished it. I only read half of it. It's not like it was bad but I know it would be just 3 stars if I finished it and I was tired and bored.
Another huge disappointment was Fledgling by Octavia E. Butler. Another one I didn't finish. I barelly even started it. I don't know what was going on in her head to write that vampire-like being with the appearance of a 10 year old girl having graphic sex with a grown man and then hinting that she was the one that seduced him... Disgusting.
Nocturnes by Kazuo Ishiguro was pretty bad and so was Heir of Sea and Fire by Patricia A. McKillip. This really was the year I wept for my favourite authors. I doubt I will finish the Riddle-Master trilogy.
A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin was also a disappointment. I am so sad about this one because I love her essays and I liked the 2 Hainish Cycle books I read by her but this was so boring. Isn't the Earthsea Cycle meant for children? How do they not fall asleep???
Cloven Hooves by Megan Lindholm was also disappointing but honestly I didn't expect much. Maybe Realm of the Elderlings is the only thing the author wrote that I like. If it was one book it would be a one hit wonder but it was an entire series so I am confused.
Son of the Shadows by Juliet Marillier. How does someone write an amazing book like Daughter of the Forest and then writes this??? The problematic romance was there already but what happened with everything else that was good and turned to trash?
13. What were your least favorite books of the year?
1- Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie (it was a reread but honestly I have no idea how I thought this was ok the first time)
2 - Cloven Hooves by Megan Lindholm
3 - Heir of Sea and Fire by Patricia A. McKillip
4- Nocturnes by Kazuo Ishiguro
5- A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le.Guin
6 - Son aof the Shadows by Juliet Marillier
7- Heir of Sevenwaters by Juliet Marillier
15. Did you read any books that were nominated for or won awards this year (Booker, Women’s Prize, National Book Award, Pulitzer, Hugo, etc.)? What did you think of them?
I am not aware of book prizes so I had to google it. Apparently A Psalm for the Wild Built by Becky Chambers won an hugo but didn't I read that last year? I didn't care for it. The author is not for me.
16. What is the most over-hyped book you read this year?
Babel. But I haven't even finished. I read half of it.
Jade City by Fonda Lee. It was just ok, guys.
17. Did any books surprise you with how good they were?
Yes. I answered it here.
20. What was your most anticipated release? Did it meet your expectations?
Babel by R.F. Kuang and not at all. Into the Riverlands by Nghi Vo was also just ok and the least good book in the series so far.
21. Did you participate in or watch any booklr, booktube, or book twitter drama?
I sometimes hear about the drama but I end up forgetting more often than not. I am pretty sure I watched some videos about book drama but I already forgot all about it.
Thank you for the asks :)
