reading/watching/listening jan/feb 2k23

books

little weirds, jenny slate - if i'm being totally honest i think if you're not already in love with jenny slate this book might come across as cloying or twee. but luckily i am so i found it delightful

watchmen, alan moore - so good it's stupid. it's funny because i decided to reread this after having reread sandman in the fall and falling in love with it all over again, and while sandman is for grown-ups and that's part of why it's good (unlike the netflix show which is for babies which is why it's not), reading that one i was like, god, i was so profoundly lucky to discover this exactly at the age of fourteen, the perfect age to encounter it. with watchmen, i admired and am glad i read it in high school (if nothing else it informed and gave context for my understandings of... a lot of cultural discussions over the years lol), but i enjoyed it much, much more as an adult - the emotional landscape of it is just entirely textures unknown to the very young. like most things that have gotten insanely famous, the boiled-down cultural osmosis blurb on it is not quite inaccurate but it leaves out much of the appeal: its inventiveness, the intricacy of its construction, the way it feels expansive while being incredibly taut. and its compassion - its worldview is dark but very humane; rorsharch is pathetic and monstrous but there's a sadness in his story, too. i don't ever want to know what alan moore thinks about sally but revisiting her as an adult i found her believable, even familiar, her scenes with laurie a surprisingly real snapshot of a generational divide between women with different relationships to patriarchy.

language at the speed of sight, mark seidenberg - a (readable and accessible, though i glossed over a bit in the parts about their neural network experiments) book about reading, recommended to anyone interested in the literacy pedagogy stuff i babble about here sometimes. there was a chapter on the history of writing that perversely made me love the english language even more, but obviously my favorite part was the bit near the end where he talks about how ed schools suck because they are antiscientific institutions whose goal is not the transmission of knowledge but the socialization of young teachers into a particular ideology and identity role, which is 10000% true.

movies

the river (1938) - love a WPA doc

top gun - cult spokesperson and human trafficking apologist tom cruise is in fact one of the great jaw-clench actors of our time. no one before or since has put on a pair of sunglasses so well. at one point during this filmé - i think it might have been during the silhouetted kissing scene, which has such bizarre lip choreography it's an ingenious way to get around tom cruise's inability to convincingly portray sexual attraction for a human woman - i turned to @onihcinimkcin and said, "who is this movie FOR?" because i had always assumed it was very much a boy movie but it turned out to be filled with girl stuff like a sex scene with billowing curtains out of an eighties music video and tender homoeroticism. then i remembered about boys and planes and was like, well ok. (he said it was a shounen anime, which also tracks.) great to see a movie from when movies knew how to light scenes that took place at night. a fun fact about the plot of this film is that at the beginning of the story the captain or whatever states that the top gun program lasts five weeks, which means that maverick develops a rivalry with iceman, seduces his professor, falls in love, gets investigated and cleared for his best friend's death, goes through all five stages of grief, rediscovers himself as a pilot and a man, and befriends his former nemesis, all in the span of five weeks. this movie contains two separate scenes with the joyful terrible singing of BFFs. baby meg ryan's HAIR? my favorite part was when the shirtless volleyball scene happened where all the boys were playing with all the other boys and the soundtrack was playing "playing with the boys" because they were playing with the boys.

top gun: maverick - the title of this movie is so funny because it sounds like a standard sequel concept where it's like "top gun but now top gun guy is Going Rogue" but then i watched top gun and that's just literally his name. top gun: tom cruises. not as bonkers as its predecessor but tom cruise, an evil human being, has gotten better at the acting part of being a movie star in the past quarter-century, and that sound design/editing in the canyon sequence, when it's the big climax but there's no music, just howling wind? good shit! get those technical oscars babe! it is also funny that the mission is to destroy an enemy base and we literally never learn who the enemy is. they have to go to "the border" the border of WHERE? the movie will not tell you. the border of narnia for all it cares. THE border. "we want a war movie without the actual war, even more than the first time." sure. it has been a long time since i laughed at a movie as hard as i laughed when tom cruise and babygoose were fighting in the snow-covered forest and tom cruise said "no I was supposed to save YOU! what were you THINKING!" and babygoose said "YOU TOLD ME NOT TO THINK!" and tom cruise just stared at him dumbfounded and furious because he's right. his improvements in his craft, i should mention, do not extend to romantic scenes; he and jennifer connelly (i never notice this shit but DAMN, i swear she looks younger than she did in a beautiful mind and not in a good way) literally lie in bed ostensibly post-coitally together and it's like, aw, how cute. they're friends in a culture where they have platonic naked sleepovers.

werewolf by night - i've been watching a lot of marvel content over the past several months because it's good dumb background noise for mindless-ish work stuff. i don't know that this was the worst thing i watched? but it was definitely the most pointless. i can't believe they dragged gael garcia bernal into this.

guardians holiday special - WHATEVER, I THOUGHT THIS WAS CUTE. "mantis and drax want to fix christmas for peter so to get him the best present ever they kidnap kevin bacon" is a perfectly delightful concept. this is the kind of dumb shit i wish marvel would use their extended universe and cosmic playground to do more often, instead of boring terribly shot action scenes but now it's got that other guy in it too (the better parts of she hulk also landed here, although that show suffered from the problem of just not being good or well written or interesting at all).

guardians of the galaxy 1 & 2 - rewatched them and was confirmed in my belief that they are really underrated in the typical marvel rankings and that in particular they have more functional screenplays than almost anything else in the universe. 2 in particular was fun to revisit after hatereading the dreamer trilogy because it's a story about how peter turns out to actually by birth be more special than almost anyone and yet he should still kill his shitty dad so he can go off and have adventures with friends; there's also a whole other plotline about how his shitty dad-figure redeems himself but does so by committing a genuinely sacrificial act of love after delivering a sincere apology that acknowledges his wrongdoing. these are not high bars to clear but they work dramatically, they're better at this stuff than e.g. anything that happened in shang-chi, and, again, they made me appreciate that maggie stiefvater is so deranged james gunn seems well adjusted and wise by comparison. grim! "if you kill me you'll be just like anybody else" / "and what's so wrong with that?" is one of the best exchanges in a marvel movie ever and the only compelling moment to come out of a villain battle outside of, like, the killmonger stuff and a special little bonus present to me (a person who hateread the dreamer trilogy).

mikey & nicky - holy shit, what a fucking movie. i mean like a real fucking film. this essay says it all better than i could (and is wonderfully written to boot).

shakespeare in love - no one ever talks about this movie anymore except to complain about how harvey weinstein bought its best picture oscar, stolen away from saving private ryan. i can't weigh in on that because you couldn't fucking pay me to sit through saving private ryan, but i am here to say in the year of our lord 2023 that shakespeare in love absolutely fucks. i don't think i ever knew it was co-written by tom stoppard, but before looking that up i was already thinking how much more deliberately shakespearean the screenplay was than i could appreciate in eighth grade: attuned to the rhythm and musicality of its dialogue, and then also the crossdressing, the clowns, the indifference to historical realism, the bawdiness, the banter. the scene where will extemporizes on his lady love's imagined virtues to an increasingly displeased viola in disguise reminded me of the thing in the romeo and juliet essay i'd read about how romeo enters the play almost a parody of the petrarchian lover, enamored of an impossibly pure woman who can never be his, and finds real love in juliet, who unlike the addressee of a sonnet can talk back. there's a whole riff where shakespeare is on the couch at the apothecary's talking about how he's got writer's block and making a series of phallic double entendres involving his pen. gwyneth is fine. this movie's cast is INSANE btw, we all know judi dench won an oscar for eight minutes of screentime but like, geoffrey rush is in it? colin firth? imelda staunton? BEN AFFLECK? it's a movie that's incredibly fond of its subject without being in love with itself, riffing affectionately on the neuroses and vanities of writers and actors alike (the actor playing the nurse, asked what the play's about: "well, there's this nurse..."), luxuriating in sumptuous period costuming, bringing to life an impossibly sexy affair, letting itself believe in this brief perfect love. also it rightly understands that act 3 scene 5 is THEE scene of all scenes in romeo and juliet despite being less famous than both the balcony scene and their sonnetized meet cute. in conversations about the current blockbuster takeover you hear people complain sometimes about various kinds of movies that no longer get made and it struck me this was a perfect example: a genuinely smart, sexy movie for adults sparing no expense to look gorgeous at all times, but one that's also gleefully silly and horny and fun. it's a beautiful-looking period piece that won an oscar, but it's not what people think of as oscar bait; it's concerned above all with wanting the audience to have a good time. i feel the bard would approve.

criminal minds: evolution - prentiss calls herself "mommy," tara is bisexual now, rossi says "fuckhead." they understood the assignment 100/10

ms. marvel - not amazing in the grand televisual landscape, but the best of the disney plus offerings, and the least ugly, most competently shot thing marvel has ever put out by far. the colors are cute and nice to look at and frequently we get camera decisions with clear purpose! the bar is low but the floor beneath it is littered with every other stupid thing they've done. the lead was adorable, too, looking forward-ish to see her with brie larson this fall and hoping she gets to stretch her wings on something worthy.

theater

a strange loop - so, funny story: i kept seeing ads for a muscal called a strange loop and thinking "oh, like the closing track of liz phair's seminal album exile in guyville, the song which inspired nineteen year old me to get a tattoo - wait, no, no one would name a broadway musical after a liz phair deep cut, they must be talking about the same concept she named the song for from some book i've never read." like, every time i saw this ad i had the exact same conversation in my head. then like a month before it closed @unbornwhiskeyy texted me to tell me that liz phair was playing in the lobby of a musical they were about to see and i was like SAY WHAT NOW? so obviously i had to go. anyway: delightful, rude, funny, sharp, genuinely provocative which is hard to make it to broadway with, fantastic ensemble work, a certain inherent thrill in seeing a broadway musical that won a tony and a pulitzer about being black and queer and broke, like, how did you get away with that? i don't know that it totally lived up to its own ambitions but i liked how hungry it was, how much you could feel it trying - it reminds me a little of reading white teeth in that way, a debut that arrives not quite fully formed but impressive nonetheless, and that you can feel kicking at the door to be let in or die trying. i thought the whole time i was watching it that i admired it and was enjoying it but wasn't exactly emotionally connecting the way it wanted me to, but as soon as the house lights went up i started to cry.

music

the one who wanted more, cheese on bread - i was like obsesssssssed with their second album, the search for colonel mustard, back my late teens/early twenties, and was thrilled to discover via spotify that they'd reunited a few years ago for a third outing, one which is as funny and melodic and clever and cool as their last. "party dance" references lil kim and kimya dawson in the same verse; if that appeals to you, i would recommend.

i also spent like nine million hours in january listening to the world/inferno friendship society's red-eyed soul which is still after 16 years a perfect album to me.

podcasts of note (i'm not gonna list like every random self-help interview i listen to or every one-off episode about a fitfluencer lying about creating custom plans turned christian vlogger married to a guy who lost his police job for being too racist and violent but it's the scamfluencers episode on brittany dawn)

behind the bastards - still trying to fill the YWA shaped hole in my podcasting heart. this comes close vibes-wise - conversational explainers of dark topics - but i haven't decided yet if i like it enough to listen to any of the episodes about people i'm not already interested in. the host is funny and clearly a smart dude but he has a new guest every episode to listen to him do the explaining and they are so far mostly dull and unfunny and not particularly insightful or smart (another critical YWA thing that makes it so special despite its many many flaws - michael and sarah are both fun to listen to when they react to things, and my exploration of the podcast universe has taught me this is NOT a common gift).

just a small blurb about tsukki being a baby w/ his s/o

Tsukishima is incredibly beautiful.

Sure, he’s a thorn in your side, but beautiful nevertheless. Especially in the mornings, when the sun floods through the windows and past the curtains. Just to land graciously on his pale skin, giving him the ultimate golden hour effect. The sunlight accentuated his features nicely, rounding out his face and giving his sharp features a softer look. You knew he would be on your case later about how you were practically a stalker for staring at him while he slept. To which you would probably respond by saying it was his fault for being so beautiful in the first place.

But that’s an issue for later. For now, you just want to bask in your boyfriend’s beauty for a little while longer. It’s just something about the way he sleeps that makes your heart skip a beat. Maybe it’s the way his blonde hair is tousled and sticking up every which way. Or maybe it’s the way his eyebrows are furrowed and the wrinkles that form in between them. You can’t help but laugh softly to yourself, even when resting, he had to have his signature resting bitch face. It could also be the way his legs intermingled with yours, preventing you from moving anywhere. Whatever it is, you love the feeling it gives you. You love the feeling he gives you.

You watch silently as he slowly begins to rouse from his sleep. This was your favorite part. His eyelids fluttering open to reveal the golden-brown orbs that hid behind them. He sits up but hasn’t noticed you staring yet, too fixated on rubbing the sleep from his eyes and running a hand through his hair in an attempt to make it look halfway decent. It’s important to note, throughout all of this, his legs are still tangled with yours. You won’t be going anywhere if he has any say in it. Finally, he turns to you and squints, you can tell he’s trying to figure out if you're awake or if his poor eyesight is playing tricks on him. You decide to help him out by wishing him a sweet good morning. To which he nods half-heartedly and turns to get his glasses off the nightstand.

Kei in the morning was an interesting experience. He didn’t act like his normal sarcastic, quick-witted self. He was much quieter, clingy, needy, and softer, docile if you will. Now that his glasses are snugly on his face, you sit up and give him a small peck on the lips. You giggle when he leans forward as you pull away, an indication that he wants more. Your boyfriend gives you an unimpressed look and a small glare, but there’s nothing but sleep clouding his eyes. You ask if he wants another kiss and he nods slightly. Not something he would admit to if he was fully awake. And so you happily obliged, giving him another kiss and another.

As you pull away again, that’s when you see it. The smallest of smiles adorning his face, a rare sight to see when it came down to Tsukishima. A man who rarely smiled because he’d rather not look like a lunatic smiling for no reason (his words, not yours). And his smile alone causes a chain reaction for you to smile as well. That smile widening as he moves closer to you, only to bury his face in the crook of your neck. You could feel his warm skin pressed against yours and his breath making the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

He finally wishes you a good morning back, his voice deep and still laden with sleep. He wraps his arms around your torso and presses his face impossibly further into your neck. You laugh as he inhales your scent before commenting how good you smell. This side of Tsukishima will always be one of your favorites, it was just so… un Kei-like of him to act this way. But if your boyfriend wanted to act like this in the mornings, who were you to complain?

You gently card your fingers through his blonde hair which makes him shiver slightly. You knew he was a sucker for having his hair played with. This continues for a few more moments before you hear soft snoring. Craning your neck to see, sure enough, he fell right back to sleep. You can’t blame him though, it is 8:45 in the morning on a weekend. Removing his glasses gently, you place them back on the nightstand before laying down with him again. This time, his head laying on your chest and arms securely wrapped around you. You can already imagine yourself recalling everything that just happened this morning to your boyfriend, only for him to deny it. If he wanted to act oblivious to his docile-like behavior, he could do just that. Kissing the top of his head gingerly, you pulled him closer and closed your eyes, waiting for sleep to overtake you as well.

But you both know he’s just a big ‘ole baby.

It could be interesting… I imagine then being a very open and close knit family u know, where they can talk freely about anything,and yes including sex, and I think it could be interesting to see how maybe bella needs some advice/want to talk to someone about being intimate w her gf and doesn’t know how to bring that up to her family bc she is embarrassed and doesn’t want to make anyone uncomfortable?? I’ve never read a doc like this, or where one of the kid is not straight (only w/ Harry or the reader being bi) and yeah it should be written abt more.

belle - 18

“Will you stop faffing, you look beautiful honey.”

You slapped Belle’s hands from playing with her outfit again. Tonight you and Harry were properly meeting Megan for the first time, by taking them out for a meal at this new Thai restaurant down the road. Belle had been worrying all evening as she was getting ready, coming downstairs multiple times to show off outfits to you so you could give them your honest opinion. It didn’t help her when you said she looked beautiful in all of them. Belle wasn’t into playing “girly” dress-up, but she thought that putting effort in for her girlfriend, tonight, might be a good idea. So she’d finally decided on some denim jeans, a basic top and then one of Harry’s old blazers. She looked amazing.

“Just so nervous.”

“Why? You like them, right?” You asked, adding on a bit of lipstick, whilst you were sat at the table of this fancy restaurant.

“Yeah. Like really like them.” Belle emphasised, shrugging off the blazer as she was becoming too hot with nerves.

“Well then we’ll really like them too. We trust you.” Harry butted in, sitting as close to you as he could whilst sat in these chairs. Before you’d managed to sit down at the table he’d moved your chair along to be closer to his, meaning he could slink his arm around the back of your chair and have his hand in your lap if he wanted to. Even after all these years he still knew how to make you feel especially loved.

Belle’s phone pinged and it made her freak. “Oh god, it’s Meg. They’re here.”

“Okay, B. Calm down and go and get them from outside, we’ll just order some wine or something.” You ordered her softly, trying to put your daughter more at ease. She was more nervous than you imagine Megan would be.

Your daughter stood up from the table, both you and Harry smiling at her. “Okay.” She pushed her chair in behind her and about to walk off, but she quickly turned back to you both, “Remember; Megan Dover, they/them pronouns and don’t mention anything about astrology otherwise we will be dead before we leave this table,okay?”

You both chuckled at her, loving how she was so aware of her girlfriend and the things that were important to them. “Okay love. Now stop fussing and go.” Harry shooed his hand and his daughter away from the table. She turned back around to flash you two thumbs up and you both smiled at her, watching your all-grown-up baby walk away.

“We’ve done well Styles.” You turned to face him, to find he was already admiring you, thinking about the wonder life you’d both created and the wonderful children that had been a product of it.

“Was just thinking the same thing, m’heart.” He smiled and leaned in to kiss you, pressing his lips onto your lipstick-stained ones. He didn’t care if his lips became painted a different colour because of it, he would never miss the opportunity to give his beautiful wife a deserving kiss. He loved you too damn much.

You cupped his chin and he tightened his arm around you, that had been slunk around the back of your chair. He squeezed your thigh three times in signal for saying ‘I love you’ without any words needing to be spoke. You tapped his chin three times in return. Everyone always hated how loved up you two were, but really you just think they’re jealous of how perfect your relationship is. Sure you have your ups and downs, but isn’t that what makes it so perfect? You pulled away and looked into his dreamy eyes, kissing him once more for good luck, before returning your attention to your glass of water for a drink.

“Thirsty?” He asked you, keeping you close.

“Mhm. All that talking I was doing this afternoon on the phone to that bloody insurance company.”

“You did give them a piece of y’mind though, love. You were a lot more civil than I would’ve been.” Harry chuckled, waving his hand to catch one of the waiters attention.

“Seriously though? Nearly charged us an extra £1,000 for a service charge. Bloody fuckers.” You sighed and put your water back on the table after taking a lengthy sip.

“£1,000 isn’t really that mu—” He didn’t finish his sentence though because he caught sight of your stern face and knew exactly what you were thinking. You hated when he talked about money as if it wasn’t a problem, because you didn’t want your kids to grow up with that ideology. “You know what? They’re bastards and i’m proud of you for handling them so well.” He kissed you again and then the waited came over, stopping you from having a go at him for being cheeky. You pinched his leg in respond and he caught your hand, holding it tightly in his as if a warning for you to stop.

“Evening Sir. How can I help?” He asked politely, his serving towel draped over his forearm.

“A bottle of y’cheapest red wine please.”

“Certainly Sir.” And the waited was gone.

“Cheapest?” You asked confused, making Harry turn back towards you.

“Well it’d be a bit hypocritical of us to ask for our favourite bottle of wine, which is £1,000 darling, now wouldn’t it?” He smirked at you, knowing he’d played you just perfectly.

“Such a git.” You scoffed in pretend offence and then kissed him again too make sure that he knew you weren’t mad.

You both sat back and looked in the direction which now you could see Belle walking back over to you from where she’s gone to fetch Megan. Belle was guiding them book, Megan following closely behind her, and they were holding hands. They looked completely adorable and you wanted to just rush your camera out and snap loads of photos of them to remember this moment. Yes, you were that mum who takes a photo of everything and anything when it came to your children. You even had an album on your phone dedicated to your children’s haircuts… You leg started to shake nervously in anticipation.

“Calm down you!” Harry laughed quietly, just incase the two girls could hear you. Harry stood up out of his chair first and held out his hand for you to follow. He made sure your chair didn’t tip back as you stood and kept ahold of your hand as they approached you both.

You caught Belle’s eye and you could how happy she was from the twinkle within.

“Mum, Dad, this is Megan,” Belle introduces you all, Megan still stood slightly behind her, “Meg, this is my mum, Y/N and my dad, Harry.”

Harry was the first one to cross his hand over the table. “Lovely to meet you Megan.”

“And you Mr Styles, but please just call me Meg.” They shook hands together and Harry smiled at them warmly, wanting to make her feel as part of the family as possible. He was good at that.

“Well then then you, please, call me Harry. Makes me feel old otherwise.” His joke made the table laugh and ease any nervousness that had been there before.

“That’s because you are old, dad.” Belle added cheekily.

“Oi watch it you. Don’t think I won’t embarrass you in front of your girlfriend.” He raised his eyebrows teasingly and pointed sternly at his daughter, who did pack quite the punch with her snarky responses sometimes.

“I’m counting on it Harry.” Megan laughed, which made everyone chuckle again. Megan was such an easy girl to get along with and it was clear that they made Belle a very happy person, for that you indebted to them.

“And nice to see you Meg.” You shook your hands with Megan as Harry and Belle continued to banter over the table. You were sat opposite Megan, Harry next to you and Belle diagonally opposite you. You and Megan both sat down before Harry and Belle did.

“Likewise Mrs Styles,” you gave them a look which had them chuckling as they corrected themselves, “Y/N, sorry! Are they usually like this?” They asked you, watching Belle and Harry talk about some absolute rubbish.

“Oh don’t even start! They wind each other up all the time. Drive me up the bloody wall they do!” You laughed and you felt calmer when Megan laughed too. “Wine?” You offered them, having had the bottle delivered whilst you were all being introduced to each other.

“Yes please.” They smiled and held out the glass to help you pour. You poured them a generous glass and then followed by pouring yourself one too.

You weren’t blinded by the beauty of Megan. They had strong-loving brown eyes and blonde hair that seemed to be toned down with brunette roots. They had a simple face with perfectly plucked eyebrows and a fiercely sharp jawline. They were just very naturally pretty, that you could tell. They were wearing similar to Belle actually, which made you think they’d coordinated their outfits - your inner mum was freaking out over the soft thought. You and Harry often liked to coordinate outfits too, like tonight - both of you were wearing navy blue.

“You want wine B?” Meg asked Belle, breaking her away from the pointless conversation with her dad.

“What? Oh, yes, yes please.” Belle responded, shifting closer towards Meg and holding their hand again. They kept their public displays of affection to themselves, a bit like you and Harry had originally been. You filled up your daughters glass, but passed on filling up Harrys glass because he was driving home tonight.

“So what do you plan on studying at university Meg?” You started the conversation with the easiest question you could.

“Marine Biology.” They answered and you could tell they were clearly excited by the tone of happiness in their voice. You didn’t miss the squeeze of pride that Belle gave them either.

“That sounds good! Where abouts are you going to study?”

“Newcastle, actually.” Meg went quiet and you understood why, because Belle was going to the exact same university to study Engineering.

“Oh really?” Harry asked, pretending to be surprised but it definitely came through sarcastically - this earned him a kick under the table from his daughter.

“Oh shut up!” Belle rolled her eyes and Meg smiled at her playfulness with her family, it made them really happy that their girlfriend had such a loving and special family.

You were so not ready to send off your daughter to university, because she was your final baby to leave the safe nest of the Styles home and it was just going to be you and Harry left. You were excited for the time you’d have with him, but you were sad to see you final child leave you. You were even more excited for Belle to be going out and adventuring the world as she wanted to. She was going to do great things and you couldn’t be prouder of her. It eased you to know that at least Meg would be their with her - almost like a home away from home.

“You have any brothers or sisters Meg?” You asked.

“Well Ivy just terrorises everyone and anyone. She’s just evil.”

“Belle ain’t much better i’m afraid.”

“Dad! Meg is going to leave me if you keep painting me out to be an arsehole.” Belle rolled her eyes, but was brought out of her strop by Megan who brought her hand up to press their lips on her skin.

“Can’t chase me away that easily Belle.”

And it was that moment that you knew that Belle had found a forever partner in Megan, just as you had found in Harry.

makki would be laughing as you mess with him, kissing just under his ear and making him shiver, but he passes it off as you tickling him. you run your hands over his thighs and chest and he whispers out amused little variants of “stop, come on. it’s time to calm down” until you grope him through his jeans and the words cut off and end in a breathy moan. he tries to laugh it off, but the way you grind your hand against him transforms his laughing into heavy breaths.

matsukawa on the other hand is into it, but he doesn’t think you’ll go through with it. he’s holding back for your sake, trying to keep your dignity intact because he doesn’t want you to be embarrassed by your own desperation. all it takes is one tug on his hair and one roll of your hips in his lap to pull a surprised little “hah” from his lips, followed by a “fuck it” and a kiss you can feel through every inch of your body.

The Bunker Party - January Debrief

Hey my darlings!

So, The Bunker Party was back with a bang for the first month of 2021 and it was so nice to see so many wonderful and beautiful faces, new and old, on the stream. I have so much stuff to share with you, my fingers will ache once I’ve finished typing it all.

The stream was just amazing. It was filled with fun, laughter, and so many of you sharing your love for all things Supernatural. Seriously, SPN does have THEE best fandom and I’m so glad to be a part of it.

6 hours we were hanging out for! To see so many beautiful faces, hear so many lovely voices and to spend time with all you guys was just a dream! The support from everyone for each other, the love in this fandom; I can’t express how much I adore it.

I love holding these events and as I mentioned last night, the next one will be in February (date to be announced) and I’m already looking forward to seeing so you all again.

You turned the key in the keyhole and unlocked the door to your shared apartment with your boyfriend Chan, whom you had found lying on the couch with a bag of chips in hand, as it's been a day off for him - not for you though.

Upon stumbling into the living room and pushing the door shut behind you, you immediately collapsed on the couch next to Chan and groaned miserably.

"Rough day at work?" Chan sat up straight and asked you with a concerned expression.

"You could say that," you frowned, holding your lower stomach as another wave of cramps overcame you.

Chan, being the attentive and caring boyfriend he was, caught on to your actions right away and realized what was actually going on and that is wasn't 'just' a rough day at work.

"Ah, I see~" he nodded knowingly, "it's that time of the month again, isn't it?"

You groaned in confirmation.

"Okay, hold on! I'm right back."

And before you could ask what he was going to do he had already disappeared. A few minutes passed and you were wondering what on earth Chan was doing and what made him take so long? You heard him shuffle around the apartment but before you could overthink any further, there he was, stumbling back into the living room, arms packed with various items.

"Do you need any help with th-"

"No!" he cut you right off. "Just sit, relax and don't move, baby, alright? I'll help you feel better."

You raised your head in curiosity, wanting to see all the items Chan had gathered and what he was planning to use them for. He sat down next to you on the couch again and turned towards you. You giggled. He had hung a sign that read "free hugs for y/n and y/n only" around his neck and smiled at you.

"Alright," Chan announced, "There's a blanket for us to cuddle with, a heating pad for your cramps, some painkillers, two cups of your favourite tea, some of your favourite movies, oh, and ice cream."

While announcing what he had brought, he pointed at each item and already put them all into place. Lastly, he removed the sign from around his neck and crawled under the blanket with you. His arm naturally went around your shoulders, so you could cuddle into his embrace and rest your head on his shoulder.

"I hope you'll feel better soon, love." he whispered and placed a soft kiss on your forehead before starting the first movie of the night.

While he’s generally shy, the idea of being able to forgo his makeup in favor of a mask and actually fit in with the crowd has given him confidence. Open to plotting, dancing, etc. Attending with MEG GIRY.

Clara Oswald: Clara has never been to an event like this before and is very excited to see the White House for the first time. She’s not quite sure why she was invited, but any excuse to meet new people she’d take. Open to plotting, dancing, etc. Needs a DATE. Hoping to get her into trouble.

Thomas O’Malley: Any excuse to party and Thomas is there. He’s not the type to go wild, but he’ll kick back and drink a little, smoke a little, dance a little, and nab that free food. Open to plotting, dancing, etc. Needs a DATE.

Anwir Gold/Rumplestiltskin: Anwir is anxious to use this ball as way to get close to the political overlords of this realm. And the idea that this whole event will take place in what seems to be the “castle” of this kingdom? Delicious. Open to plotting, dancing, etc. Needs a DATE. Would love to do political plots.

Prince Adam Maudite/The Beast: Adam is NERVOUS. Not only has he never danced before, but this would be the first time he’s gone out with Belle. ive been feeling so much love for my very many ocs lately so im gonna write some blurbs about them and the diff stories they are/were involved in under the cut PLEASE feel free to ask questions about any of them i love infodumping abt them

Aquapolypse basically years into the future humans mutated into fish people (and various other creatures but this primarily focuses on the fish people) Zak and Zenna - twinsies! based off betta fish! very pretty, very fashionable, very fighty. strong familial bond. i adore them Solv - based off piranhas! Baby’s First Nonbinary OC, they have a crush on Zenna, and very stereotypically Emo. listens to mcr and cries that they were born in the wrong generation Xavier - swordfish! VERY punk. he has a crush on Solv, who, as we know, has a crush on Zenna. 10th grade me wouldve played this up as a love triangle but i am so much wiser now and resolving it with polyamory

Untitled a the last unicorn-esque story, but with a wood elf! she’s the last of her kind but has no idea. she’s just been vibing in the woods for a while until modern times comes along and builds a housing plan right next to her woods. she gets lonely at night and sings sometimes, causing rumors to spread that the woods are haunted. 2 young people (i picture them to be about 20???) decide to check it out, find her, and immediately think shes adorable and bring her home as a wacky 3rd roommate. Rhathel - the elf in question! shes very strong and very smart and capable, but her lack of knowledge when it comes to modern human culture causes many to think she’s an idiot. NOT the case. she will beat you up V - disaster punk nb lesbian! falls in love with Rhathel almost instantly Carlos - distinguished gay(tm). V’s best friend and voice of reason. bit of a nerd and a techie. always got the Latest Gadgets. listens to carly rae jepsen and cries Untitled 2 But Superheroes a group of teens hanging out in places they shouldnt be leads to them getting involved in a freak accident that bestows them all with super powers! however, unlike a lot of superhero stories, they dont have any sort of mentor whatsoever to tell them how to be a hero, and well. when you leave these idiots to their own devices they are truly idiots! Lola/Lolita Light - the self proclaimed leader of the team. consumes a lot of superhero media and magical girl anime, thus reasons that she knows exactly what to do in these situations, but usually ends up getting them into worse places than they started. she gained the ability to manipulate light molecules and decided her alter ego should be a magical girl Ness/Frostbite - sarcastic and cold, but is actually the mom friend of the group. she loves her friends deeply but won’t say it. i very clearly picture her with blonde to blue ombre hair. she, as you may have guessed, can control ice and snow Brandon and Brendon - Those Assholes(tm). we all knew them in high school and probably got bullied by them a few times. i do love their character development though where they realize they’re assholes and start making up for it. anyway their powers work in conjunction and i havent *quite* figured out the mechanics of it yet, but they have to be in close proximity to each other in order to do anything. this effectively starts to rid them of their “no homo bro” attitude when they realize they literally have to hug every time they want to power up. i forgot what their alter egos were but i THINK it had something to do with storms and electricity?? i dont remember Dante/Inferno - the antagonist who eventually comes around and joins the team. he was initially part of the friend group but got so fed up with constantly being excluded and bullied by them that he literally formed a whole ass supervillain ego when he realized he had fire powers. the team does realize how shitty they were to him and they BOTH have redemption arcs.

Various scatterings of different ocs that dont necessarily come from any stories but i love them a lot Coronam - a spn demon oc i made in like 10th grade. goes by Corey for short. i still love him so much. he’s definitely an edgelord and i put him through the “would your oc be a tumblr sexyman” quiz and the result was he would be on par with the onceler Blaze - a dnd character i made for a oneshot! they’re a tabaxi warlock and basically if you took meg from hercules’s backstory and mixed it with the song woman by kesha you would understand her.

Who are some of your fav non-white musicians? They are incredibly underrepresented and I really want to listen to and support more of them

oh my god, where to start? there’s so many and it’s all like, varying across a bunch of genres and some aren’t the most accessible but i’ll name the ones off the top of my head, some with description so you can decide who to listen to from what you think you might like.

The Mars Volta — progressive rock. one of my favorite bands of all time. almost everyone that played in TMV was/is non-white (and they had a lot). TMV was the Omar and Cedric show, but there would be no TMV without founding members Jon Theodore (one of my favorite drummers of all time) and the late Ikey Owens (who was their pianist). listen to De-loused in the Comatorium (2003) from beginning to end, and if you end up liking TMV, then work your way through their discography. it’s worth it.

At the Drive-In — post-hardcore, progressive. Omar and Cedric’s previous band. the most influential, and arguably the most important post-hardcore band of all time. every one except Jim Ward and his replacement is non-white. start with their third studio album Relationship of Command (2000), and if you have never heard their song One Armed Scissor, you absolutely have to.

Omar Rodríguez-López — progressive rock, indie pop, almost every genre under the sun. one of my favorite guitarists of all time. it’s impossible to condense his 49 album discography (and those are just solo albums) into a blurb so i’m not gonna try. afro Puerto-Rican. multi-instrumentalist (guitar, bass, to name a couple), producer, composer, songwriter, director. it’s easier to list the things Omar isn’t and hasn’t done.

Dance Gavin Dance — post-hardcore, progressive. DGD has a long, complicated history, but almost every album they have ever released is solid. their guitarist, founder, and honest-to-god visionary Will Swan is one of my favorite guitarists of all time. Will is black and latino (specifically half Mexican). i’ve been a fan since 2010. the best albums to start with are probably the last two latest releases which are Artificial Selection (2018) and Mothership (2016), but my personal favorite albums are Dance Gavin Dance (self-titled, 2008), Happiness (2009), and Acceptance Speech (2013)

Hail the Sun — post-hardcore, progressive. Donovan Melero is one of my favorite drummers of all time, he’s also the front man/vocalist of HTS. He’s Latinx, specifically Mexican-American. Guitarist Aric Garcia is also Latinx. my favorite HTS album is Wake (2014), but their latest album Mental Knife (2018) is a good place to start.

Sianvar — progressive rock/post-hardcore. super group consisting of the previously mentioned favorites Will Swan (Dance Gavin Dance), Donovan Melero (Hail the Sun), and Sergio Medina (Stolas). they recently went on a indefinite hiatus/disbanded this year. they have one self titled EP released in 2014, and a studio album called Stay Lost (2016).

Secret Band — post-hardcore, progressive, on the heavy side. side-project/side-group of Will and the other DGD members, basically DGD without the clean vocals/singing.

Royal Coda — post-hardcore, progressive. super-group consisting of the (again) previously mentioned favorites Will Swan (Dance Gavin Dance), Donovan Melero (Hail the Sun), Sergio Medina (Stolas, Sianvar) and ex-Dance Gavin Dance singer Kurt Travis. definitely listen to Compassion (2019).

Frank Ocean — indie pop. probably the most popular artist i’ve mentioned, besides Earl, or DG, or Denzel. also probably my favorite singer of all time, also probably my favorite bisexual of all time. listen to Blond (2016).

Mitski —indie pop. Mitski is bisexual, Japanese-American woman. her music honestly means a lot to me, all the topics are so personally relatable as another bi asian girl. Puberty 2 (2016) is my favorite Mitski album.

Japanese Breakfast —indie pop. Michelle is a bisexual, Korean-American woman. listen to Psychopomp (2016).

FKA twigs—indie pop.Twigs is incredibly talented, if you like musicians like Kate Bush then she’s perfect for you; she makes incredible music and I couldn’t recommend MAGDALENE (2019) enough.

JPEGMAFIA — experimental rap. Peggy’s latest album All My Heroes Are Cornballs (2019) was released just recently (september 13!), while that’s a good album to start with i recommend starting with his second studio album Veteran (2018). favorite songs from Veteran to name a few are: Baby I’m Bleeding, I Cannot Fucking Wait Until Morrissey Dies, 1539 N. Calvert, and Rock N Roll is Dead.

Denzel Curry — experimental rap. start with Ta13oo/Taboo (2018), or ZUU (2019)

Danny Brown — experimental rap. start with either Atrocity Exhibition (2016) or XXX (2012), either way, you can’t go wrong.

Earl Sweatshirt — experimental rap. honestly, pick any of his three studio albums to listen to and you’re set, but Doris (2013) is probably the most accessible/easiest album to start with.

Death Grips — experimental rap. y’all already probably know who DG are and who Ride is, so i don’t have to introduce them/him. recommended: Exmilitary (2011), No Love Deep Web (2012), and The Money Store (2012).

Kero Kero Bonito — indie pop. Sarah Midori Perry, also known as Sarah Bonito, is British-Japanese. listen to Bonito Generation (2015)

Covet — math rock, instrumental. their front woman/guitarist, Yvette Young, is Chinese-American.

Stolas — post-hardcore, progressive. disbanded in 2018, still worth listening to. this is Sergio Medina’s original band, again if you ended up liking ATDI, or TMV, or DGD, you will absolutely love Stolas. Sergio is latino (specifically Mexican and Argentine), i absolutely love his guitar playing, he’s honestly so underrated.

honorable mentions, not necessarily my favorites but i do like and listen to these bands/artists/musicians.

Animals As Leaders — progressive metal, instrumental. there’s nothing about Tosin Abasi’s guitar playing i can say that thousand of others haven’t said before, he’s beyond amazing. Tosin is Nigerian-American, and AAL’s second guitarist Javier Reyes is latino. If you like heavy virtuoso/technical music like maybe, Dream Theater, then AAL is perfect for you.

Nova Charisma — progressive rock. this is Donovan and Sergio’s current side project, Nova Charisma is officially just a duo but their drummer is ex-Stolas drummer Carlo Marquez (who is close friends with both Donovan and Sergio). Nova Charisma is boneless TMV, and i mean that in a very good way (both Donovan and Sergio are heavily influenced by TMV and ATDI). that might change with future releases though, since they only have a three song EP out as of right now.

Periphery — progressive metal. guitarist and founder Misha Mansoor is insanely fucking talented. Misha is Indian-Mauritian.

Chon — progressive rock, instrumental. Mario Camarena, Nathan Camarena, and Esiah Camarena are all Mexican-American.

Polyphia — progressive rock, instrumental. Tim Henson, their guitarist, is half Chinese.

Trivium — early stuff is metalcore, current stuff is metalcore and thrash metal influenced american heavy metal Matt Heafy is Japanese-American, and does a mean James Hetfield impression if you’re into that.

popular/mainstream bands that have members of color and/or musicians of color that i also enjoy/love that you probably already know of:

Metallica (Metal/Thrash Metal. this one’s pretty obvious, since this is a Metallica blog… anyway, Kirk is Filipino (like me), and Rob is Mexican-American/latino.)

The Smashing Pumpkins (Rock. their guitarist, James Iha, is Japanese-American. you have to listen to Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.)

Jimi Hendrix (Rock. Jimi is black, and the greatest guitarist of all time, duh, i don’t have to explain this one.)

John Coltrane (Jazz. the jazz GOAT. listen to A Love Supreme.)

Miles Davis (Jazz. Miles is the GOAT beside Coltrane, if you’ve never listened to Bitches Brew you absolutely have to.)

Rage Against The Machine (Rap metal. Tom Morello is black and Zach de la Rocha is latino.)

Deftones (Rock. Almost all of the band members are latino, with the exception of their first bassist who was Asian and a couple of others.)

Alice In Chains (Grunge. William DuVall is black and Mike Inez is Filipino.)
