Questwatch really has the brainworms going...
Listen, I know it’s canon-compliant, seeing as Kiriko and Orisa shouldn’t be with Overwatch by this point, but it was cute to hear that Genji had been working on his Role Heroes’ backstory with Emily for weeks. They’re actual friends!
We could already assume Emily was part of the Overwatch family with how close she is to Winston and Mei (They are her siblings-in-law, your honor). There was that Overwatch 1 interaction where Winston invites Mei to hot pot with Lena, Emily, and Athena that was followed by an Overwatch 2 interaction where Winston says he can’t wait for the next hot pot with Mei. Then, there was also the 2018 OWL spray where they’re all watching sports on a couch. Classic Lemon Tea history right there.
What makes me upset is the fact that Emily doesn’t seem to be living at Watchpoint: Gibraltar. London Calling ended with Lena and Winston saying “We did it! We saved London!”, but we know Iggy is in danger in the upcoming co-op mission. That’s the thing that’s always annoyed me with the plot armor our heroes have. You’re telling me that Lena and Emily have been living safely in London for over five years while Talon has Lena on a hit list???
On one hand, a bit of angst where Emily says her goodbyes to Lena would make me cry, in a good way. (Their love will persevere through anything, damn it!) We see how appreciative Emily is of Lena’s vigilantism in London Calling. She would give up having her girlfriend by her side for the betterment of the world. Also, I love the idea of Mei being subjected to Lena being a sobbing mess without her girlfriend in the crew quarters. On the other hand, Emily is not safe in London. Period.
Let me make one thing clear: I do not want Emily as a hero. Ever. Not only do I not want the possibility of Lena and Emily killing each other (it’s heartbreaking enough with Winston), but I think Emily is perfect as a civilian. She reminds Lena what she’s fighting for, but she’s also a great parallel to Jack’s relationship with Vincent. Jack forgot what he was fighting for, putting his duty above all else, and distanced himself from everyone. Emily is the reason why Lena kept up with being a vigilante, the reason why Lena bumped into Iggy, and the reason why Lena and Iggy were able to stop Kace’s uprising.
All of this is to say that I love the idea of Emily being at Watchpoint: Gibraltar with the new blood of Overwatch. It’s as safe as she’ll ever be with Lena as her girlfriend, after all. I want to see her interact with more heroes, and I guess I’m a little disappointed by the heroes playing their Role Heroes campaign. If we could get Kiriko and Orisa, who are not there in canon, why couldn’t we get Jack? Have you SEEN him being an absolute nerd over chess in the Sojourn novel? It would be a great way to show players who don’t view external media that Jack isn’t just a grumpy old man.
Also, can we talk about Adventurer Tracer’s lines? “Was your knight on holiday?” when eliminating Mercy? “Sorry, I’m the knight in this realm!” when eliminating Pharah? HELLO??? I need to see a Lemon Tea and Pharmercy double date this instant. (People can grow apart after five+ years of not seeing each other. Sorry, Gency shippers.)
I haven’t even seen the rest of Questwatch. I’m “only” tier 42 as of writing this, and I haven’t seen anyone post all the chapters in their entirety. Still, I am LIVING for all this Emily content. Now, give her a voice. Give her a 3D model. Let her show up in Story Missions. I am BEGGING.
(I am so normal...)

Do you think Mei would want to go back to Antarctica to try and reclaim the Ecopoint, or at the very least recover the bodies of the other scientists so they could get a proper burial?
Honestly because of the incident at the Ecopoint, I think it would be too high of a liability to try and reclaim, let alone maintain. In theory they could possibly try staffing it with Omnics, or take it one step further and re-establish it as a sort of Omnic commune/haven, but as far as their immediate needs with regards to fighting Talon and maintaining their operations from Gibraltar, their more immediate plan of action would be both recovering the bodies of the scientists and also cannibalizing the ecopoint for any usable supplies and technology. A little morbid, but until they get more stable footing, it would be the best they could do.
I title this one, "The bar is on the ground and Jack digs a hole."
----
Mei was hunched over in her seat, hugging her arms at the elbows and resting her forearms on her knees as the dropship rattled over the ice floes, heading back north. Jack was stone-faced next to her. He had barely said a few words beyond, "We'd better get to work," when they had landed, or the odd technical question in the midst of said work. Mei had seen him quietly poke through Opara's desk at one point, grabbing a framed photo and a cigar case. She didn't really take him for the smoking type.
To the credit of Captain Opara's cryonic technology, the remains of him and the other Ecopoint scientists weren't going to thaw anytime before they were returned to their respective homelands, but that also made it impossible to put them into standard-issue Overwatch agent caskets without taking a chainsaw or some kind of laser-cutter to them, and with the icy cylinders being utterly opaque and most of the organic scanning technology being offline, and with no medic on the team to otherwise scan for organic remains, no one wanted to try that.
Winston had supplied plenty of muscle in getting the morbid cylinders of ice into their respective thermal bags and lifted onto hover dollies. Torbjörn and Winston had come along to take inventory of any remaining technology they could take back to the Watchpoint for their own uses, and had carried a tablet around with a videochat with Doctor Ziegler and Captain Amari, to examine their medical supplies. Now Torbjörn pulled the high fleece collar of his jacket up and shuddered as icicles hung from his beard, hunched over that same tablet. Between all the hastily grabbed engineering and medical supplies, and the Overwatch-flag covered remains of the ecopoint scientists, the interior of the dropship was cramped, and with all the ice surrounding them, very, very cold.
Mei gave a glance to Jack out of the corner of her eyes before adjusting her glasses slightly. Jack shuddered and tightened his arms across himself.
"Opara's cryonics revolutionized organ and tissue donation during the Omnic Crisis," Jack said at last, "He saved a lot of lives."
Mei looked over at him.
"You... probably already knew that," he muttered.
Mei felt a bit awkward saying 'yes,' so instead a quiet, "Um--" escaped her.
"...he was the only member of your team that I met, which--I mean--the team was handpicked by him, so..." Jack huffed and his breath fogged, slightly, "I--I did want to do this. When we were still... when..." He itched at his temple.
Mei was looking at him with some pity.
"There was a response window, and... you didn't meet the response window. That... was all we really had to go on at the time. And... things were already bad. The Venice incident hadn't happened yet but--" He drew in a steadying breath, "You rationalize things. You get better and better at rationalizing things. I've sent plenty of soldiers to their deaths and I told myself your team understood the risks but--"
He kept catching himself with 'but' and not knowing how to continue the thought. He glanced over at her, she wasn't looking at him.
"The truth is, there is no excuse. We could have saved you back then... obviously there was no way we could have known you were alive, but if we had prioritized Ecowatch nearly as much as our combat and security operations, we would have done this years ago. And we would have found you."
Everything Angela said in her letter of resignation was right, he thought grimly, rubbing at his eyebrow, God, she was a pain in the ass, but damn if she wasn't right.
"And what then?" Mei said quietly.
"Huh?" Jack perked up and looked at Mei again.
"If you had found me back then, what do you think would have happened?" She was looking at him very seriously, her glasses slightly fogged in the cold.
"I dunno..." he scoffed a little, "Well, knowing the climate of the time, you'd probably be all swept up in a big media circus of being the sole survivor of a horrible Overwatch operation gone wrong--if you were smart you would have gotten a book deal, probably a few pundit appearances because god knows you couldn't count on us to help you save the world---"
"You don't have a lot of faith in people, do you?" said Mei.
"I just... know how fast the tide can turn," said Jack. He grimaced. "I'm sorry--I'm making this about me, when this should be about your closure."
"It's not about my closure, it's about getting them back home," Mei gestured with her head at the flag-covered remains. She didn't mention the second part--that it was also about cannibalizing Ecopoint Antarctica for anything useful for Watchpoint Gibraltar. Both were quietly wondering exactly where this mission had rested on Winston's priority list--it had likely been bumped higher with Jack, Ana, and Zarya's arrival at the Watchpoint--more personnel meant more resources needed. Jack had also put a word in with Winston--he still wasn't sure whether it was because Mei's presence prompted old, ugly feelings of guilt he had buried with Zurich, or if he knew he wouldn't be able to look her in the eye as a team member until they got this done. It was strange to be so overwhelmed by a feeling this strong when he had been driven by his obsession over Gabriel for so long.
"...right...." Jack said, after half a beat.
Mei settled up in her seat. "I already knew how dangerous our situation was before we entered cryostasis. I already knew how far we were from other antarctic bases. I knew what power failures would look like. I had plenty of close calls in my own travels. The scariest thing about waking up wasn't facing any of that--It was waking up without them--it was the idea of facing it alone. I came in with a team, and I woke up alone."
The dropship shuddered with the wind again. Jack had that stony face up again.
"But I have a team now. So that's what I focus on," Mei was fidgeting with her hands in her lap. She pressed her lips together and glanced over at Jack, who was silent at this.
"Did you want closure from this?" she asked, after a pause.
"I don't know," Jack admitted, "I made a lot of mistakes as Strike Commander... let a lot of people down... I know this doesn't begin to fix any of it, but it's something we can do."
"That's all anyone here is doing, right?" Mei had a small smile.
"Right," Jack said quietly, glancing off.
Their breath was fogging with how cold the dropship was. Jack glanced over her shoulder towards the cockpit. With Tracer off on a different mission, Athena was handling the autopilot with Winston helping where he could. Torbjorn was absorbed into his own tablet, no doubt inventorying the tech acquisitions and seeing what could be used to shore up repairs on the watchpoint.
"I know I missed a lot," Mei said quietly, looking away from him again, but not even looking at the remains this time--her eyes didn't even seem to focus past the lenses of her glasses, "And... it terrifies me, how much everything went wrong, how much everyone changed but... it also scares me what being here might have turned me into, you know?"
"I think so... Maybe I should have frozen myself back when everyone loved us and my hairline hadn't gone to shit," Jack mused and Mei snorted.
"I know it sounds naive," she said," "But sometimes I am glad that I'm still... that I didn't..."
Break? Jack thought, Become disillusioned? Left us and become one more symptom of the broken promise Overwatch was turning out to be?
He just huffed and shook his head. "I don't know. Winston--he never gave up on us--- I mean we were all he had but... Oxton, too---Maybe you would have stuck with them through the disbandment. God knows they would have loved to have you. Whatever's in them is whatever got you out of that Ecopoint. "
"Hope?" Mei offered.
"I mean sure, if you want to be corny about it."
"You know, you aren't as good at the inspiring speeches as you used to be in all the old holos," Mei settled back in her seat.
"Those were scripted."
"Not all of them."
Jack just gave an amused "Hm," at this.
"...why did you grab Opara's cigar case?" Mei asked after a bit.
"He was big into the cigars, Opara. You know, a properly stored cigar can last for decades. Opara didn't skimp on his case either. Damn near talked my ear off about humidors and insulation at the more formal functions, so I checked, and damn if he wasn't right. Only two left, but they're still in good shape, and I know because he and Gérard were always dragging me to basically hotbox these things with ambassadors at formal events. I figured his family might want them. Libations or... burning sage, or..." he waved a hand vaguely, "If they don't want it, well... I guess I'll smoke one once he's finally buried, and the other once we take out Talon. Either way I hope you'll forgive the carbon emissions."
"Opara would say the same thing," Mei smiled.

Tortilla trend as my fave Overwatch ships let’s go!
Symmetra & Ashe
Zero interest in participating all together. Ashe doesn’t want her makeup ruined and Satya thinks the idea of being slapped in general even with a tortilla is unpleasant. Neither want to clean up the mess afterwards.
Mei & Zarya
Zarya just play taps mei with the tortilla while giggling the whole time. Both spit out the water and break down into a proper giggle fit.
Genji & Zenyatta
They’d get as far as Genji explaining the premise of the trend and zenyatta would go into comfort mode concerned as to why his boyfriend would wish to be slapped not understanding it’s a game and won’t hurt. Zenyatta would definitely turn the tortillas into genjis dinner for the next few nights.
Genji & Angela
Genji would be giggling non stop gently tapping angela with the tortilla trying to make her laugh. Angela would severely underestimate her own strength and slap Genji into the windows startup sound. Apology Kisses and healthy salad wraps would follow.
Genji & Cole
Yes Genji has a bunch because I ship him with supportive people okay! He deserves it!
Zero hesitation. Knowing genjis reflexes Cole would be quick off the draw to strike first. Genji wouldn’t even get a chance to finish putting the water in his mouth before getting smacked with a limp flatbread and be left reeling trying to figure out what just happened and why so quickly. Cole would 100% spray out his water in a giggle fit and pepper Genji with kisses as an apology for startling him. Coles famous burritos would definitely be the following meal.
Hanzo & Cole
Hanzo definitely underestimated how ready Cole might be and would slap hard and without hesitation sending the cowboy spinning. Cole would rebound fast though and slap him back mid twirl before taking him to the ground with him. Floor kisses and giggles would absolutely follow! Cole would definitely make soft tacos with them.
Hanzo & Doomfist
Absolutely not happening. Of the two of them Hanzo would probably be the one to suggest it but fearing even the slightest chance of hurting his boyfriend akande would decline… the two have instead found fun in hiding the tortillas in random places around base.
Hanzo & Reinhardt
Reinhardt would without question be the one to suggest it wanting nothing more than to make Hanzo laugh. Hanzo would sheepishly give the weakest slap he could not wanting to even think about hurting his boyfriend to which Reinhardt would laugh and rear back like he’s going in for the kill only to instead drop the tortilla and scoop Hanzo up peppering him with kisses until the archer spits out the water in a giggle fit. Reinhardt would probably use the tortillas to make an apple and bread slice like apple Brown Betty or pocket ‘apple pies’.
Hanzo & 76
Yes he gets a bunch too the shimada brothers deserve it!!
The two are pretty aware of what the other can take and most likely wouldn’t hold back each giving one another a good slap followed by a moment of silence before both spraying out the water and laughing. 76 would most likely make the remaining tortillas into chicken and salad wraps.
Hanzo & Baptiste
Both would rather just eat the tortillas and watch a movie with some drinks. Jean loves combining Mexican and Caribbean cuisine though it often ends up a little too spicy even for Hanzos tastes. Fruity cocktails are the solution!
Hanzo & Junkrat
Junkrat would be too excited. Hanzo wouldn’t even get to sip his water before being tortillad. Definitely left the shimada reeling in stunned silence for awhile after. Nothing ratty kisses can’t fix.
Baptiste and Cole
Coles already slugged Jean once mistaking him for a talon agent when they first met, even if he thinks it’s fun he can’t bring himself to play slap his partner, it makes him remember how bad he felt after giving him such a nasty hit. Both would rather enjoy the tortillas as food instead.
Jack & Gabe
Absolutely zero hesitation. Both go in for the kill and go hard only to end up spraying each other with water and snorting with laughter. Neither feel like cooking so they probably used expired ones from the cafeteria and decided to have some fun before throwing them.

OVERWATCH IS BACK: UNCERTAINTY AND HOPE AFTER UN CONFIRMS VIGILANTE ACTIVITY
Olympia Shaw | May 27, 2016
Tumblr media
NEW YORK CITY (Atlas News) – In the past few weeks, investigators confirmed that a number of violent incidents across the world, including Monday's attempted museum heist, have involved several notable former Overwatch operatives.
The United Nations finally admitted today that those individuals were not acting on official orders.
In its entirety, the UN's terse statement reads: "The United Nations has not authorized any Overwatch operations. The organization’s charter remains revoked." Further questions from this reporter were met with hostility or silence.
Such a short statement belies its astonishing truth: We have not seen the last of Overwatch. Being dismantled by the UN only drove them into the shadows.
Tumblr media
This news will undoubtedly spark concern. It should. Overwatch was dismantled due to overwhelming negative public sentiment and allegations of corruption and abuses of power; the thought that the organization's remnants are operating without supervision is a chilling one.
But while governments from the Kremlin to Downing Street were quick to issue unreserved condemnations, the public was not. An Atlas News flash poll taken today showed a large amount of anger over the possibility that agents of Overwatch had gone "rogue," but it was the poll's final question that revealed the most interesting reaction. Nearly three out of every four respondents said they were "uncertain" what Overwatch's return would mean for the world.
Overwatch's history invites such uncertainty. In wartime, it was regarded as humanity's savior. Today, many have bitter memories of its disgraceful ending.
In order to understand what may happen now, it may help to take another look at Overwatch’s past, and the desperate circumstances from which it was born.
The Omnic Crisis
When Omnica Corporation revolutionized robotic manufacturing, it seemed the world was on the verge of entering an economic golden age. Their massive factories of automated construction machines and self-improving software algorithms were patented, marketed as "omniums," and installed on every continent.
What came next is well-documented. The omniums began to break down. Independent analysis showed they would never come close to meeting the corporation's promises of growth and output. Omnica was investigated and forcibly dissolved after evidence of fraud was uncovered, its omniums shut down.
Tumblr media
That is why it came as such a surprise when these defunct, dismantled omniums woke themselves back up and immediately launched a military campaign against all of humanity.
This was a war many countries thought they were prepared to fight. But no single country, no matter how powerful its military, could permanently shut down a single omnium. The adaptability of robots, once celebrated by humanity, had become a tactical nightmare. Worst of all, there were no demands from the omnics. There was no ideological reason for their aggression. They simply attacked, and we did not understand why.
Overwatch: A Change In Strategy
No country was succeeding in securing its own territory. But some soldiers and strategists showed remarkable ingenuity in acclimating to this new brand of warfare. The United Nations covertly brought a few of these unique minds together to form a small, nimble team, aimed at striking significant blows against omnic strongholds. Their names—Morrison, Reyes, Amari, Liao, Wilhelm, and Lindholm—have since become legendary. The world would come to know them as the founders of Overwatch.
Tumblr media
In highly secretive missions, they targeted the omnics' command and control protocols. After great sacrifice and heroism in a series of dangerous raids, they destroyed it all, rendering the omnic armies inert. The Omnic Crisis had finally come to an end.
For decades, as Overwatch grew, they made global stability their mission. And the world was happy to have them. Rogue omnics, terrorism, warmongering dictators, none of them could stand for long against such a capable, dedicated force. During natural disasters, we watched heroic rescue operations and efficient rebuilding initiatives. We saw Overwatch pioneer scientific initiatives to eradicate epidemics, reverse ecological damage, and develop new breakthroughs in medical care. They were a symbol of hope. An entire generation, my generation, was raised to see them as the best of humanity.
The Fall
Overwatch never had a shortage of critics. Even in its glory days, many voices called for severe restrictions on the agency's mission, insisting that such a powerful group of individuals needed careful oversight. Rumors of black-ops missions—carrying out tasks like assassination and kidnapping—were dismissed by the public as paranoid fantasies.
Tumblr media
But as time passed, criticism became harder to shrug off, and the agency seemed to be tone-deaf to public concerns. Controversial missions stoked public outrage until it reached a fever pitch, and some of Overwatch’s most famous and celebrated agents were forced to retire in disgrace. If that had been the end of it, many might have accepted these missteps as the unavoidable signs of an aging, bloated bureaucracy, suffering under monolithic leadership that desperately needed a change in direction. The truth was much worse than that.
In the final years of Overwatch's existence, a top secret division called "Blackwatch" was revealed. There were stories of assassination, coercion, kidnapping, torture, and worse. Governments called on the UN to shut down the "aggressive and repeated violations of many countries' sovereignty." As public distrust swelled, a massive explosion wiped out Overwatch's headquarters in Switzerland. The United Nations called it an accident; today we know it was a battle, a dispute between Overwatch commander Jack Morrison and Blackwatch commander Gabriel Reyes. Overwatch's death knell was that of two former comrades laying waste to all they had built.
In the wake of such an incident, little could remain hidden. The full transgressions of Overwatch's shadow operations became known. Even the most ardent defenders inside the organization bowed to the truth and called for its dissolution.
The United Nations could do nothing but shut down Overwatch. Few people at the time doubted it was the right call. The world had never been more peaceful—the biggest threat to global stability and growth was, in many minds, Overwatch itself. Its time had passed.
Today
In the years without Overwatch, we've seen the world change. A movement promoting omnic civil rights and citizenship gained traction. The global economy surged. There seemed to be no shortage of good news.
But, as with Overwatch, the good news hid many darker trends. Tensions between humans and omnics have never been higher, particularly after the assassination of the omnic spiritual leader Tekhartha Mondatta. War may very well be inevitable. Local political leaders have accused certain corporations of using covert operatives to "persuade" government officials into accepting exploitive deals, and when that failed, of hiring mercenaries to enact more permanent solutions. We've seen shadow organizations operating with impunity, often leaving a trail of dead civilians in their wake.
Is this why these former Overwatch agents have come out of hiding? Could they not stand by and watch any longer?
Has the world's situation grown so desperate that they believe nobody else can help?
And does the world want them back? Should it?
Tumblr media
The surveillance footage from Monday's attempted museum heist instantly caught the world's attention. Two former Overwatch agents risked life and limb against two frighteningly capable mercenaries, and the theft was thwarted. But while much has been made over the images of sheer mayhem—that, miraculously, did not result in any deaths—there was another moment that caught my attention.
Two young boys were caught in the middle of the violence. (And someone give them a medal, please, for keeping their heads straight in that situation.) When the attack ended, they spoke briefly to Lena Oxton, an ex-Overwatch operative known to the public as "Tracer." The surveillance footage does not reveal what she said to them. But it does show the expression on the older boy's face.
Hope.
When it comes to Overwatch, my generation understands that feeling all too well. To us, Overwatch embodied it. Its corruption was nothing short of a betrayal. The cynical part of me urges the world to take firm action if the dark forces that brought Overwatch down rise again in the form of self-appointed vigilantes.
All that gives me pause is this: The Overwatch Generation has grown up. We once believed in hope. It still lives within us, and some have chosen to act upon it in astonishing ways.
Consider the news from around the world in recent years. A Chinese environmentalist with a taste of adventure saved a nest of endangered arctic wildlife from a collapsing glacier using nothing but her own inventions. A musician from Brazil became a hero of his favela when he exposed and destroyed a corporation's exploitive use of local land. A professional-gamer-turned-mech-pilot has become a celebrity in Korea due to her publicized acts of heroism.
Tumblr media
These are exactly the types of remarkable individuals Overwatch would have recruited. Take a look on the net; they are exactly who today's kids are looking up to as heroes. Would they have been inspired to take such extraordinary action if not for Overwatch?
The future is unknown. Evidence suggests that not all surviving Overwatch agents have been using their talents for the good of peace. But examine what happened yesterday at the museum. Which Overwatch did we see in that surveillance footage? The secretive, corrupt assassins? Or two disciples of Overwatch's original ideals?
More importantly: Should we fear the new generation of heroes just because the old generation let us down?
I don't believe we should.

I DIDN'T EVEN THINK ABOUT THE MEI THING OMG-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She isn't a soldier either and she didn't even expect she'd be fighting, but unlike Angela she willing to. She's a lot more positive about it too!!
Not only that but I talked with one of my friends about this, and I've talked about my head cannon that Amelie and Cassidy were friends pre-Talon. But in the serious theory direction I honestly think that if Widow gets a redemption and joins Overwatch to help take down Talon. I think they'd be able to relate to each other to a certain extent. Neither of them would be who they are without the specific circumstances that lead up to it. Without the Crisis, without Talon, they would just be regular people. Neither of them wanted to be soldiers but here they are fighting a war anyway. The same goes for if Sombra and Sigma join too. Honestly Cassidy relating to ex-Talon agents and being the first to empathise with them is an interesting storyline on it's own, but adding Cassidy feeling like he finally fits in because he's no longer the only ex-criminal on the team? That he isn't the only one who didn't imminently do good in the world and that he's not the only one that doesn't feel like he's a solider?
That would be a great character arc.
This also relates to what you said about Ana not mentioning Cassidy in this line;
Tumblr media
Though Cassidy does have an a similar outlook on situations to what Angela, Sojourn and Lena have, there are couple of differences. Cassidy, for one, has a larger understanding on why someone would join Talon, why they would cause harm. Something we see all three of these characters struggle with. Being someone who was a criminal gives him a lot more empathy and patience towards those who are still on that path.
We see Cassidy, though non-canon, interact with Talon agents and he seems rather chill with them, complementing Widows aim, being patient and joking around with Sigma, being fairly casual with Sombra. Meanwhile in canon we see that though the introduction was rough, Cassidy genuinely likes and trusts Baptiste but he also aware enough of the people around him to know to encrypt Baptistes file. It also seems that he and Athena knows that he's in contact with Sombra;
Tumblr media
Again I think the reason Cassidy wasn't mentioned is because he doesn't think the same way Angela, Lena and Sojourn do, and Ana knows this. If we look at what Ana says to Cass in "New Blood";
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
yes it has similar tones to what was said in Valkyrie but it is still different;
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With Cassidy she goes into more detail, talks about him specifically, no mention of anyone else. To me Ana seems a lot more vulnerable here. With Angela, compared to what she says to Cassidy, it's rather simple, though they still have a core message;
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This message is key both in similarity and in the differences of these conversations. In Valkery it seems that Ana just thinks Angela should go help in some way or another. With Cassidy she is actively setting him up to be a leader. Nothing says this more than the final moments of the conversations;
Tumblr media
She leaves Angela for her to decide what she should do.
But with Cassidy?
Tumblr media
She tells him to learn from the past, encourages him to not make the same mistakes in it, to make a new Overwatch. Which is what we see him doing in the last cut scene of Liberation;
"Jack Morrison is off chasing ghosts, he's not coming back."
The only member of the old guard he actively suggests they bring back is Sojourn, because he knows that she's got the battle strategy they need in order to better their chances against Null Sector. The fact that he's the one to suggest it as well and not Winston is telling as well.
Cassidy think differently both from the old guard and the second generation, Cassidy isn't the type to quietly retire, he also isn't the type of person to fight meaningless battles. He's not made for peace but he's also not made for war. He's made for change.
And Ana knows this, and I think Jack knows this too. Afterall Ana wasn't the one gathering info on Talon, Jack was.
Sorry this ended up longer than I expected, went on a bit of a tangent-

Some basic rules:
1) I'm mainly into male x female. I can write fxf, futa x f, or male x futa but that will be rare, and I will almost never do male x male stuff.
2) Be nice.
3) People willing to rp as women too get priority. I don't like rp-ing women often, but I do mind if I'm playing women in all our rps. This one isn't an iron-clad rule (depending on my mood, how friendly we are, and so on, I won't mind playing the girl more)
4) I'm always open to asks, snippets, headcanon and the likes.
5) While most of my writings will be "one male and everyone else is a hot girl worshiping him", you can freely ask about other dudes, about au, and so on.

I had this whole theory mapped out when Echo got voice lines in the files a patch or two ago that correspond with Lúcio's "favorite animal" question.
Tumblr media
I found a line in the files after Season 5's update where Mei confirms her favorite animal is, in fact, the penguin. I was wrong about Tracer, though!
So, whose favorite is the Jack Russell Terrier?
Jack's. It's Jack's favorite. Thanks, Overwatch narrative design team.
It's funny because I had this idea of Lena getting a Jack Russell Terrier and naming it Frank (as in Jack's middle name, Francis) just to spite Jack, too. It turns out Jack likes when dogs are named after him, after all.

Into the Spider-Verse: SP//dr: Edge of Spider-Verse #5 (Sponsored by WeirdKev27)
Tumblr media
Hello all you happy webheads and welcome back to our second dose of action as your reward… for what I don't know. Maybe you petted a dog recently or something and they were a very good boy/girl. I don't know. With our main spider-trio clear, we're now into the other three spider-persons starting with our only other spider-woman SP//dr.. which is going to be annoying to type out already I can tell you that.
SP//dr is also the only spider-person in this retrosepective to not really have a lot of indivdual focus. She's mostly shown up in team up events only getting one shots in this and the edge of spider-geddon mini series, and the most she's gotten for a solo is a story arc is marvel unimited's spider-verse series. In contrast looking at the other spider-people miles is on his fifth solo series and has tons of minis, gwen has had three solo series and also tons of minis, Spider-Pig had a short lived solo we'll be visiting soon and multiple minis and while never having an ongoing, Noir has had three full mini series and a few one shots. And of course peter has had multiple runs of amazing, spectacular and adjetivelss spider-man along with marvel team up, giant size spider-man, two volumes of web of spider-man and spider-man unlimited, untolt tales of spider-man, two volumes of sensastional spider-man, webspinners tales of spiderman, spider-man's tangeled web, avenging spider-man, and spider-man/deadpool among COUNTLESS mini series. What i'm saying is while Peni has a great issue here and a great concept she really hasn't had the big character defining storyline most of her peers got, and out of the 6 chosen, she's easily the obscure pick, though it likely helped Lord and Miller switched out her origins considerably while leaning into the anime style to give them another distinct spidey to roll with. Kimiko Glenn's impecable as always performance probably didn't hurt.
So going into this.. Peni was a mystery to me, as I hadn't read this issue, spider-verse or spider-geddon. And boy howdy was this a massive fun suprise: For starters Peni was co-created by GERARD FUCKING WAY. For those who don't know him
Tumblr media
But for those who don't, Gerard was, and maybe still is?, the lead singer and creative force of the emo band to end all emo bands My Chemical Romance. Naturally my faviorite album is their last one, an over the top and glorious punk album set in a comic style corprate wasteland and where Grand Motherfucking Morrison played the main bad guy. No joke, they showed up in two diffrent videos as the character. He rocks.
And for most people being a world famous rock star and having his own money bin only with pennies painted pink , black and red would be enough. For Gerard.. he wanted to write comics too and was damn good at it. He created Umbrella Academy out of his love for the x-men, which as far as I know he has'nt gotten to work on and i'ts a damn crime, and Doom Patrol, one of my faviorite DC Comcis teams. Thankfully he DID get to work on the latter and rescued them from a decades long limbo, crafting a run that's as batshit insane as it is damn fun and creative. It may not entirely make sense at times but like Morrison's own team defining run, it dosen't always need to to be awesome. He's also written multiple comics based on Danger Days, the album I mentioned, and the 12 issue series Cave Carson has a Cybernetic Eye. While his work is sporadic it's always memorable and this is no exception. So look alive sunshine as we plug in under the cut.
We open with the death of a spider-man: Peni Parker's dad peter dies horribly. How?
Tumblr media
But there are two key points from this striking two page spread: SP//dr the man is dead.. btu the actual spider somehow bonded with him is alive
We then cut to young peni parker, age 10, who talks to her uncle ben and aunt mei who break the news which she takes with chilling calm… and then ask her to bond with SP//dr to help defend japan… and also prove their GREAT new caretakers by revealing they released the genetically altered spider her dad died with into the room to bite her without making sure she was okay with it. It bites her and a new spider is added to the web. As you can tell… they changed the tone a LOT with Peni. In the movie she's mostly just "LOOK ANIME'. Here.. it's more cyberpunk, with SP//dr likewise having a more mechanical design. I get Why they did it.. but wish they'd still kept peni unique while making her look anime instead of being generic anime school girl with robot buddy. Especially since SP//dr's armor is fucking sick looking as you could see on the cover
5 years later, she's on duty as this universe's mysterio is attacking.. and also really weird. While the guy inside we'll find out is some nerd in a cool suit and weird globe as usual… his way of attacking the populace is this cool ominous floating doom orb
Tumblr media
It's honestly a hell of an interpretation and makes me mad we didn't get to see MORE of way's takes on various spidey rogues, as he naturally goes all out with it while still keeping the core: mysterio is still a showman, but more as a mad artist than a hollywood schster, and his hallucinations gas is stil la thing now just poored onto the street> The art is also incredible, fitting Way's pop punk astetic like a glove, being both colorful while also fitting the mildly gritty tone: this work is cyberpunk but more the anime brand with lots of flash and sound, aka the better version. Aunt May serves as Peni's mission contorla s she prepares to get in, admits sh'es a vegetarian and crashes in on mysterio while playing the song Love is a Weapon by Cult Summer Feat Gloss.. which is a song i'm not even sure actually exists.
What we get is an awesome sequence as our mechanized heroine busts in.. sadly she dosen't say this
Tumblr media
But I think she DOES meet this guy eventually so it balances out. It's awesome especially once the hallucinogens kick in and our hero has to punch the guy out. We also find out he's a looney fan who sent her a mix cd.
We then cut to.. school as we see peni's id is public: SP//dr which is both the suit and the spider, and is confusing as you would imagine is there, and when Daredevil shows up to pick her up for superhero stuff she's excused. There's also what looks like anime mj looking at her. Neat.
I like this unvierse's daredevil too: he seems to work as SP//dr's handler, ;ally and a friend of her dad's, has a nice look to him (lookiing like armored daredevil but less 90's and more badass), and ikt's again why I wish we knew more or got a series, even a mini as this universe really ISN'T that explored. I mean granted given how way's work can go we could get more questions than answers, but we'd also get some real neat shit along the way.
We also get a really nice bit where the two break for lunch… where Peni both admits she's tired and asks about her dad. While we don't see MUCH of her here.. we get plenty of character as it's clear Peni feels lost, coming off stoic.. but it's clear there's a real sadness to her: She lost her dad, there's a job she was forced into and didn't ask for and she can never really have a normal life, something Peter, Miles and Gwen all struggle with, but it's magnified here: all of them at least can TRY thanks to the mask. Peni.. is stuck with everyone knowing she's the spider-person and we see that not having to hide.. doesn't make her feel any less alone.
The ending… is a bit more tied into the event than Gwen's.. I mean granted anything's better than
Tumblr media
Btu the last few pages are Peni being greeted by Spider-Ham, does whatever a spider-pig does and Old Man Spider. Old Man Spider, who I hadn't seen before this is Ezikiel. He's a LOT to explain and I could just brush over it.. but i'm a wordy bastard so instead here's
JAKE EXPLAINS AN OLD SPIDER-MAN MOST OF YOU HAVE NEVER HEARD OF AND DON'T CARE EXISTS
During the early good parts of J. Micheal Strazenski's long run on spider-man, we found out spider-man was tied into the "web of life and death" and picked as the spider-totem for his universe, with the reason he has so many animal foes being their drawn to him via destiny and stuff. I think it's fine: it's not a necessary explanation but I don't mind adding some magic to peter's science based world. He soon met Ezikel, a successful businessman who also had spider-powers and used them for personal gain, but showed up to help Peter against morlun, a mystical vampire man who hunts spider-people who was cool at the time but sadly got a bunch of generic siblings who are the main reason i'm not super into reading spider-verse and were wisely replaced with kingpin for the movie. Point is he's a cool old guy and in this universe peter died fighting morlun, so Eziekl became spider-man.
Anyways our heroes go to get the suit, and we get Peni stating she's a weapon to keep going till termination, seeing her once again brush her emotions aside… because the reality is too terrifying. All that matters is the job. So with that our spider-'s swing off and we get Spider-Ham's classic catchphrase.
Tumblr media
I mean i'ts no crackers and milk... oh who am I kidding it's SO crackers and milk. That'll do pig. That'll do. INto The Spider-Verse #5 is amazing, a ncie short story. If I have any complaint it's that it feels fragmented, with three diffrent stories: peni fighting mysterio, peni and daredevil fighting thgs mysterio told them about, and spider-verse spider-verse. But the energetic tone, art and great characterization for peni means it comes quick, hits hard and leaves a hell of an impression. Hopefully we'll see Peni again in al lher death metal glory. For now.. this is a nice single tha tstands on it's own
Next Time: Just say Noir as a very different Peter Parker must avenge his uncle's murder and dawn a spiffy fedora.

Random tangent: ‘Soldier 76′ is just as much of an image as ‘Strike Commander Morrison’ was
I think people often do Jack a huge disservice when they ‘analyze’ him by taking his image at face value. Often, to understand his thoughts, you can’t take his word for it, and have to look at what he’s feeling beneath.
Let me explain a bit. (Under a read more because I don’t want to clog up any tags with super long posts)
Why would you be able to take his word? Jack has never been able to express himself fully in his entire adult life. He had to put on the image of ‘Strike Commander Morrison’, the beacon of positivity and strict commander, for decades. Because Jack has a massive martyr complex, and he sacrificed being an authentic person because he thought that was what the world needed. The world wanted ‘Strike Commander’; he thought it couldn’t care less about ‘Jack’.
Most people seem to be aware of that, yet they still take ‘Soldier: 76′ at face value as how he actually feels, and it baffles me. No, it’s a (literal and theoretical) mask, just a different one.
Look at how he acts in the Bastet story; he’s willing to crack jokes and have fun with Ana, smiling and saying silly things, to the point that even Ana says he’s “like a child sometimes.”
But that makes sense when you think of his relationship with Ana - as his closest friend, she got to see beneath the mask of ‘Strike Commander Morrison’, and she still can see under this one, too. (Honestly, I think Ana would see right through Jack anyway; he’s not as good at hiding his emotions as he thinks he is)
In fact, image seems to be a theme in Bastet in general - note the way that Ana puts on a new mask to become a protector. It’s the same thing Jack did. He wants to help people, and he thinks this is the best way to do it. Just like before - the world needs ‘Soldier: 76′, and he thinks it couldn’t care less about ‘Jack’.
Tumblr media
‘Soldier: 76′ is not a person. He’s a name. An image. (Also, they are so cute. I love them. A cool girl and her gay best friend.)
And to be honest, I think some of the other characters can see through him, to an extent. This interaction has always caught my eye:
Tumblr media
What Jack says might sound condescending at first glance, but when you think about the fact that Jack's whole deal is "fighting so other people don't have to"...it makes me think he's concerned for her and doesn't like that she has to fight here.
I think Mei picks up on that, and that’s why her response is a bit teasing. Tracer does the same with the ‘Okay, dad!’ interaction. The two of them can tell he’s more of a pushover than he lets on, no matter how desperately he tries to hide it.
But I also argue that Soldier: 76 isn’t just an image done out of necessity. I don’t think even Jack himself is aware of this, but it seems very convenient that by donning an aggressive face that shuts other people out, he doesn’t have to let others close to him.
Some people don’t seem to consider the immense amount of trauma both the fall of Overwatch and the Swiss Base explosion would cause for him. He was surrounded by constant public degradation for months to years. He saw everything he worked for get undone largely because of negative public opinion and betrayal, and was then in a serious disaster that likely had many casualties.
After something like that happens, I doubt he feels safe letting almost anyone close at all. This mask doubly functions to protect him from getting hurt in such a horrible way again. And devoting all of his thoughts and emotion to this moral crusade means he doesn’t have to face all of the real emotional issues he has. It is, as the kids say, a cope.
None of this is to say Jack isn’t bitter or angry. And I’m sure as hell not saying he’s emotionally healthy. He needs more therapy than almost anyone else in the cast.
But so many people only give Jack a surface-level analysis, and I think that’s lame. Ironically, taking the image at face value would in-universe just prove his bad worldview. Life imitates art.
