Thinking about vintage black burlesque dancers. Everything is so ⚪️washed, we know very little about them. These are just a few 💕
Every few years, my obsession comes back and I still can’t find any info (or very little) on most of them. Someone needs to write a book and preserve their history. Or make a documentary.
Names: Miss Topsy (Mary Elizabeth Thompson), Ethelyn Butler, Lady Ernestine, Jean Idelle, Marie Bryant & Shelly Devonshire aka The Fire Queen
You can look into shake dancers too, lots of rich melanin roots & history there. Many not ⚪️ dancers were referred to as shake dancers.

One of my favs and inspirations when I used to dance was Sahji (Madeline Jackson)
I loveeee dance and during college I used to be in a dance group, we mainly did various world dance and belly dance styles. I continued on and off into my late 20s. 30s came and I got interested in other things, but still love dancing so much.
I miss belly dancing and def don’t have my old body anymore, so far from it. But I’m thinking of getting back to it, just for myself and how good it feels.
