Can I gush about this one scene from the Dismemberment animatic? Apologies if I'm interpreting it in a different way than intended, but like. When the song stops and Heather stares in awe and dread of just a glimpse of Mariza's powers. I'm not sure if she knows what she's witnessing is just a fraction of a god's wrath, but man.
It really feels like all of Heather's posturing as the Biggest Baddest Bitch was totally shut down upon seeing actual magic in effect. Like in this moment, she realized she was dealing in forces she can't possibly understand, totally beyond her control. Heather thinks she's All That for hunting mermaids? Mermaids are just the tip of the iceberg that is a primordial force, a supernatural side of the world invoking gods and curses and other ancient things. And if Heather dives too deep, she'll be torn asunder.
It's just. The realization that the world is so much more vast and eldritch than you could've possibly imagined. The realization of how small and insignificant Heather actually is, that a tiny, clumsy glimpse of a god's power baffles her. And she can either cope by staying in her lane, playing it safe with what she knows, maybe even cancelling the trade altogether...
OR, Heather can double down in a desperate attempt to feel in control in a world that has suddenly expanded before her very eyes. Move up from harnessing mermaids to bigger things. And attempt to dabble in these ancient powers, risk encounters with them, in the hopes that she can get some of that power for herself, and not have to live under the constant reminder of how insignificant she is in the long run. How much mercy she's at.
Heather is, excuse the pun, out of her depth and it disturbs her, so she tries to resume professional business to get a sense of normalcy, routine, control. And she's totally lost it here. It's like watching a mob boss, threatening in real life, suddenly adapt to being considered a mundane inconvenience when transplanted to the Superhero genre; Nothing is the same after this.
You!!! You get it!!!! This is exactly it! That's exactly what we were intending with her reaction to the power of the ocean!
Heather has enjoyed unfettered power for quite some time, able to bend governments to her whims and be the top of the food chain. She knew better than to go on the ocean herself but she considered herself above hunting the mer herself anyways.
But now she knows that she's not invincible. If Mariza hadn't been focused on getting Delta to her ship she could've absolutely bodied Heather. While we don't have an exact next move for Heather prepared rn, she isn't done yet.
She's seen what's out there, and when she figures out how to harness it (so she thinks) she'll be unstoppable. She just has to plan.

Man, these last few updates really just. Make it obvious that the staff look down on us fr. Like "oh our ~new users~ might be confused by things so we're going to just get rid of things you already have teehee". It's so condescending and it sucks. I deadass don't know where else I'd go though. Mastodon or Pillowfort ig but but idk anyone there.
It's just sad. I want to talk to them and genuinely ask them what they're doing because it's just all bad.

I remember a while ago you mentioned a priestess or the like who was obsessed with Mariza, got anything else you can spill about her?
Ah yes, Priya! I can divulge a bit about her because as of now, she's in a bit of an awkward position. We intended her to be an antagonistic force but found that we'd kinda stuffed arc 1 (the ascension arc) with enough bad guys that she failed to really serve any real purpose other than "haha she's neat".
Then she didn't really fit anywhere in the "Delta and Mariza are figuring it out and also Other Shit Is Happening" arc so she's kinda relegated to the background.
However! She's still really neat and I love her.
Tumblr media
This is Priya, a priestess for the Church of Indra (the "nice" one). She's one of the most devout, loyal followers of Indra to an almost.... heretical degree. Girlie is in love with the ocean. Like, Love captial L. This isn't exactly super encouraged as it's seen as selfish/reckless for a mortal to claim that they could love a god like that, after all, how could the god ever reciprocate?
Because of the forbidden nature of her affections she's very Repressed and thus when Mariza shows up at her door with a clear blessing (curse) from indra she's insanely jealous until she realizes that... Mariza not only encountered Indra but killed her. She doesn't take this well.
We're still refining everything with her, she may find a place at some point but yeah that's her.

How about 17 with Delta and Maria?
When Delta heard a crash and a shout come from below deck, the usual line of suspects ran through her mind.
A stowaway (again) caught and causing an issue
A prank gone wrong (an unfortunate side effect of Sylvia and Ryker sharing any proximity)
A third and unknown danger not yet accounted for.
With the increased bounties on the heads of the crew on board, she leaned towards the latter option.
She ran below, stumbling towards the sound and coming across... Mariza. Tangled in the shredded and sopping remains of her hammock as her arm tried and failed to bring itself back together, cut off at the elbow as nothing but water.
The human flinched as she turned towards Delta, mouth drawn in a grimace.
"Hey."
"So... any reason you attacked your poor bed there?"
"It had it coming. Seems to attract nothing but problems."
Nightmares then.
Well obviously nightmares, but any line of questions directed would... probably not end in Mariza spilling her guts.
"Anything I can do? I could set up a night light? Get some of that water that glows like your hair or something. Maybe that would," Delta trailed off, "help?"
Stupid. Why the fuck did she say that??? She gave an exaggerated shrug, hoping it read as a joke. Which it was. Partially.
Mariza blinked at her with mismatched eyes, the blinding blue-green light that nearly lit up the room before dimming as she erupted in laughter, shoulders shaking as she filled the room. It cut like a sword, wielded in defiance more often than not. Now though, it only cut the silence.
"HAH! Haha- oh by the stars- could you- could you imagine? All powerful Samira, shooed away by a little light? The moon themselves-"
Her laughter turned into howls, tears flowing down her cheeks as she fell to the floor. Delta, helpless to resist, joined in her mirth.
"Do you- do you think Larus is scared of those straw-men they put in fields? Does he run into glass?"
"No no- he runs after the scraps of bread, and do you think Dahlia ever craves sugar cubes? Does she just- grow it herself?"
They traded ever more absurd scenarios back and forth, until neither could breath through their laughter. Mariza recovered first, still giggling as she gulped for air.
"I wish- I wish it was that easy to get Samira to leave me alone. They're can't get enough."
"At the expense of a poor innocent hammock. Truly a shame. Listen- actually- You can sleep in mine- if you don't mind. I can take the rest of the watch tonight and sleep in the morning. Just don't shred it too."
"I don't plan on it. I'm not even tired anymore."
Delta gave her a grin, "Alright then. We'll spare the hammock one more night. We'll figure something out until we hit another port."
There was room to share...
Maybe she'd ask in the morning.

So uh, I'm just wondering how else you could become a god/goddess in ocean idiots. Are the gods not immortal?
Also I am quite curious as to what the transformations (ascensions It think it's called) look like for different gods. Is Ebekos transformation the same as Mariza's just with lava instead of water?
Well, typically the mantle is passed over time, not inherited by murder. I've talked about it before (at least I think I have, sometimes it's hard to remember) but the title of "god" is more of a... mistake of language? Like they're somewhat immortal, but they're more embodiments of the elements within a vessel, and that vessel degrades over time. Hence why it's passed on.
As for the transformations for each god, that's a good question! The exact words for what it... is aren't coming to me, so I'll describe it in a sort of 2nd person way if that makes sense.
Earth: As the connection grows, you feel it coursing through everything. The way the plants dig deep into the soil and coil around the rocks. How each layer of stone compacts and changes yet stays as it is. You feel your own ties deepen, and so too do you become rooted, tied to the earth until eventually you are one. Emerging as its emissary and herald.
Fire: Like earth, you feel it moving deep below, but also in the hearth. That warmth that ebs and flows and grows with each breath, each shift of the world as it turns. It burns and bubbles and warms, cracking skin that hardens into stone then melts again in its endless cycle. Eventually the fire cannot be contained and it erupts, a being of ash and creation.
Air: On whispers and howls, its words become a second language to you. No longer just a breeze but a conversation that you become a participant in. You hear its call before a storm, announcing the cargo of rain and thunder it brings, or the pleasant day, until one day it's all you hear. The ground no longer holds you, and the clouds embrace you with open arms.
Sea: Well. We'll have to get to that one on its own, won't we? :)
