The Checklist of Desire
Tumblr media
It is no mystery that men enjoy displaying their displeasure with certain lifestyles women choose to adopt. In this case, a “man” decided to tweet out his opinion on how women’s genitalia should be. Although it can be seen as just a matter of opinion, it is wrong for him to publicly voice this opinion as if to say “hey if you are not shaved, you are not attractive”. There is no shame in being attracted to certain types of people or certain aspects of the body; however, the wording of Daniel’s tweet suggests a discomfort with female pubic hair. This adds on to a subconscious checklist of what makes them sexually desirable. It is okay to be attracted to what you are attracted to but one’s comfort with their own body overlies your attraction and they should not feel ashamed for this.  This is what MemeDaddyBae is trying to suggest back to Daniel. Society has conceived this idea that a woman should follow the “man” and accept certain roles that have “written” down for them. Society even uses conception to push this narrative, from the excerpts of Martin’s Sperm and Egg, “... the imagery [of the sperm entering the egg] keeps alive … stereotypes about weak damsel in distress and their strong male rescuers”. This narrative is dangerous because it suggests men are the “heroes” of women, which leads men like Daniel to believe they have the right to be “rewarded” for their care. They believe they have the privilege even to request that women must complete this checklist of sexual desire. Masculinity and Femininity are often juxtaposed as seen in Wilchin’s It’s Your Gender, Stupid!, “masculinity and femininity, strength and vulnerability, action and passivity, dominance and weakness”, all of which further the male idea that “we can tell them what we want” because they perceive themselves as dominant. Dominance in ideas as well in sexuality.. Even in the tweet itself, Daniel says “I like MY vaginas shaved ladies” claiming ownership of the women's bodies that he sleeps with. All in all, Daniel tweet was constructed by the dangerous narratives society has suggested about masculinity and femininity. We can thank MemeDaddyBae for putting him into his place.
