One day, a man asked me: if cloth pads are so better in so many ways, why aren't they more diffused?
I hadn't the right answer straight away. I had to think about it and after few times (obviously when I wasn't still speaking with him) I made this hypothesis:
The first reaction to cloth pads, commonly, is thinking they're gross and unclean and unsafe. Since we are used to dispose every thing around period, we are used to think it's dirty and you don't bother wash it. The next logical step is thinking that it's unsafe to wash it and that period blood it's dangerous to have contact with, and that's the reason why we dispose everything.
That seems logical, in fact we only dispose things that are dangerous.
That is thought by so many people, but it's not true. Period blood it's not unsafe, it's not dirty. It's only blood

pondering over a long-lost time when menstrual pads didn’t stick to everything but the underwear and weren’t advertised as though they’re performance enhancing drugs

insufficient laundry performance
This is under the “keep reading” tab in case people are squeamish about blood or periods.
---
WHY THE FUCK ARE MY PADS SUDDENLY STAYING BLOOD-STAINED??? I USED TO BE ABLE TO CHUCK THEM INTO A WASHING MACHINE AND HAVE THEM COME OUT SQUEAKY CLEAN!
So a couple weeks ago, I tried washing them once my monthly courses were finished, but they were all still bloody after the laundry wash. I soaked those fuckers at least a few days, including at least one day with vinegar, and I ran them through the washer again today. I still only got half the stains out, which unfortunately means “the stains are much lighter, but still definitely THERE,” instead of “about half my pads got washed, and the other half didn’t.”
I’m wondering if this is because our apartment building’s landlord finally replaced our decrepit old washer and dryer sets, because the new washing machines have shorter washes and they only do “medium soiled” laundry, which probably does not cover “menstrual pads soaked with blood.”
There’s technically a “heavy soiled” option, but we can’t actually PICK IT for some reason. I tried that, since my period was unusually heavy last month, but it just kept switching between “light soiled” and “medium soiled.”
I might have to go to the laundromat so these things can get properly washed.  Waste of fucking quarters.

women who seem grossed out by their own periods are strange to me. like on reddit whenever theres some post of some man being offended at seeing a roommates used menstrual products in the trash or some advertisement on facebook for reusable period products there are always women who are like “its a biohazard!!! i dont want to see it!!!! its basically the same as shit!!!! im a woman and even i get squicked out by it!!” like how do you function. i literally have no reaction to the sight of my menstrual blood. i never even thought to consider it gross. you feel like you may as well be uncontrollably shitting your pants 7 days out of the month? you feel like youre getting literal shit and piss everywhere? right now theres a post of some guy being mad about seeing his sisters pads in the trash and someone is like “blood is a biohazard. no need to risk it being smeared around any more than necessary.” like first of all who is smearing blood around. it is contained in the pad....that is the job of the pad... its not gonna leak out of the trashcan and kill you

"Spain’s Catalonia region rolled out a pioneering women’s health initiative [at the beginning of March, 2024] that offers reusable menstruation products for free.
About 2.5 million women, girls, transgender and nonbinary people who menstruate can receive one menstrual cup, one pair of underwear for periods and two packages of cloth pads at local pharmacies in northeast Spain free of charge.
The Catalan government said that the initiative, which is called “My period, my rules,” was meant to “guarantee the right to menstrual equity.” The regional government cited statistics that said 23% of women polled by Catalonia’s public opinion office said they had reused hygiene products designed for a single use for economic reasons.
Tània Verge, Catalonia’s regional minister for equality and feminism, called the program a “global first.”
Scotland’s government passed a law in 2020 to ensure period products are available for free to anyone who needs them. But in comparison with the Catalan program, in Scotland the products are for single use and are distributed through schools, colleges and universities, not pharmacies.
“We are fighting menstrual poverty, which affects one in four women in Catalonia, but is also about gender justice. We are fighting the stereotypes and taboos about menstruation,” Verge told The Associated Press. “And (...) it is about climate justice. We need to reduce the tons of waste generated by single-use menstrual products.”
The distribution of reusable products is also aimed at reducing waste. The regional government said that Catalonia produces about 9,000 tons of waste from single-use menstrual hygiene products.
The reusable products are acquired by the public health care system, which covers the entire population, and distributed by Catalonia’s 3,000-plus private pharmacies. The program cost the regional government 8.5 million euros ($9.2 million).
“I am completely in favor of this initiative,” 29-year-old graphic designer Laura Vilarasa said. “It will give women a product that is absolutely necessary to have for zero cost.”
Spain’s national government passed a law last year granting women with debilitating menstrual pain the right to paid medical leave."

Airplane Shooting Towards The Sky paid more attention to what women would like than a lot of straight male writers. His stallion novel protagonist wooed women with homemaking skills and tortured enemies with a demonic period simulator.

A thing that surprised me the first time I wore a cloth pads was the feeling of wearing it. And that feeling is the reason I always claim them to be more comfortable than disposable pads.
A cloth pad is made of cloth (yeah, surprise!) and that means that they feel very similar to an underwear. So you kinda don't feel them at all.
Obviously you can feel the thickness of some (thickness is often a choice, to have more absorbency), but with the most of cloth pads you just feel cloth on your skin, just as you feel with underwear on.
So they ARE more comfortable, because you don't feel them, you don't feel any sticky or sweaty thing on you. You just feel cloth, often soft cloth, it's like sitting on a cloud

Menstruating is hard enough without cis-men judging us, acting like we're clean or impure because of it. Normalize menstral cycles.
I'm high school my boyfriend was holding my purse and I let him be nosey (he was legit just being curious and I didn't care). And the moment he saw my pad (unused single use pad) he got so grossed out he refused to even touch my purse after that. Like wtf. It's no different than me keeping bandaids in my purse (which I also did because I'm extraordinarily clumsy).
Anyways. This dude's content is amazing. Normalizing menstruation.
