Kinda niche, but I've spent the last five days feeling like I'm losing my mind so here are some PMDD memes. However bad you think it is based on these memes, it's worse.

having extra painful periods

Hi!! We’ve been curious, does any other system see an increase in switching & general headmate activity linked to a menstrual cycle? Our body struggles with pmdd and we feel really embarrassed about mental illness symptoms being exacerbated by it. We’ve even had an alter appear specifically linked to helping us cope with severe period pain. Honestly we’d be super interested to see anyone talk about how they cope w periods linked to plurality.
-🌈☁️, origin unknown
oh yes, we absolutely experience this. we tend to get really blurry when we’re on our period. we’re also a mostly nonbinary-transmasc system, and we have a fem alter who fronts a lot during our period to help alleviate some dysphoria. we also have some parts who our gatekeeper keeps from fronting during our period in order to prevent more harm.
having pmdd (premenstrual dysphoric disorder) is nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed of. us folks with periods deserve to be able to openly discuss the often intense physical and emotional pain that comes along with menstruation. our own system experiences intense symptoms when we’re menstruating, including debilitating cramps and body aches, nausea, lightheadedness, migraines, major fatigue, and severe depression and mood swings. it’s rough. we pretty much live a week of hell once a month, which we’re sure many many other folks also experience.
as far as how we personally deal with this…
- go easy on ourselves. sometimes we take a day or two off of work if we can afford it. we may ask for additional help from our partner system. we try to recognize our limits, and not push ourselves too far.
- hydrate and medicate. we try to drink plenty of water and take pain relievers as necessary. naproxen sodium (aleve) has been quite helpful for us in the past. we also try to make sure we’re eating fruits and vegetables, which really do seem to have a positive effect on us.
- rest, rest, rest. we go to bed early. we take naps when we can. we break up household chores into tiny parts that we can do in pieces.
- we do our best to practice gentleness, forgiveness, and compassion to each other inside. we try to do this all the time, but when we’re on our period, it’s especially important. sometimes parts lash out, get frustrated, or struggle to cope with the pain, and we try to show each other some grace and understanding during these difficult times.
we’d encourage anyone who wants to please join in on this discussion. we shouldn’t ever feel embarrassed or ashamed for talking about a normal bodily process that no doubt affects many of us. how does menstruation affect your system? and how does your system cope with the challenges that periods present?
🌈☁️, we’re wishing your system comfort and rest whether or not you’re currently struggling with your pmdd. thanks for reaching out, and take care of yourselves!

The reality of whatever the fuck is wrong with me. Is it endometriosis or sever ibs c? Who knows. I cant see a gynecologist until July so im just waiting and hoping at this point.
This is me after spending an hour on the toilet this morning, unable to fully empty my bowels despite lactulose taken in the early hours. It has been working for the past few days, but this morning it decided otherwise. I am getting my period on friday, currently on day 2 break of the pill. I am convinced this is all related to my menstral cycle as diet does not change my issues.
This is a major flare up and im stuck in the office today so have another 11 hours before im home. I dont feel comfortable using the toilets at work bc it takes me so long.
Just ranting and showing the reality of constipation and chronic illness. Please do not send me advice or ask if i have tried x, y, z.

The Perks of Getting Your Period
Someone sent me a sarcastic video about the “perks of having your period”, which didn’t mention any actual perks. So I’d like to mention what I consider actual perks.
1. I have PMDD and suffer from severe emotional turmoil when PMSing, where I have anxiety and depression and don’t feel like myself at all and feel like I have no self control. This tends to go away or lessen once my period actually starts.
2. If you’re like me where you feel guilty relaxing when you feel like you constantly need to be productive, and you almost wish you could get sick sometimes so you could lay in bed without feeling guilty… your period might make you feel like “ah, I have a reason to relax now.”
3. Bleeding might feel like you’re letting out the tension that’s built up in the past month. Due to my PMDD, it feels like all the toxic feelings are leaving my body when I bleed, thus letting me finally relax.
4. I give myself a day off of work when my period is bad, and I don’t feel guilty about it.
5. The lower energy level that I have on my period means that it’s easier for me to relax. I can just sink into my bed and focus all my attention on a tv show.
6. **The relief that I’m not pregnant!!**
7. The feeling of normalcy that comes from having a period. I had a really irregular period where I sometimes wouldn’t get it for a long time, which made me feel abnormal. When I get it, it gives me this feeling that things are happening the way they should. Especially when I get it on time.
8. It makes me feel healthy.
9. It sometimes makes me feel more sentimental and nostalgic and emotional in a good way, where I’m more easily moved by TV shows and such, so the shows feel more dear to me.

PMDD (Post Menstrual Dysphoric Disorder)
[CW menstruation, mental health. Quoted source altered to be trans-friendly] [artist imagery created in response to artist’s own experiences dealing with PMDD]
Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a health problem that is similar to premenstrual syndrome (PMS) but is more serious. PMDD causes severe irritability, depression, or anxiety in the week or two before your period starts.
Tumblr media
Symptoms of PMDD include: Lasting irritability/anger. Feelings of: despair,  suic*de, or anxiety. Panic attacks. Mood swings. Lack of interest in daily activities & relationships. Trouble thinking/focusing. Tiredness/low energy. Food cravings/binge eating. Trouble sleeping.
Tumblr media
Researchers do not know for sure what causes PMDD or PMS. Hormonal changes throughout the menstrual cycle may play a role. A brain chemical called serotonin may also play a role in PMDD. Serotonin levels change throughout the menstrual cycle.
Tumblr media
PMDD affects up to 5% of [menstruating people] of childbearing age. Many [people] with PMDD may also have anxiety or depression.
Tumblr media
Treatments include: SSRIs, birth control pills, stress management.

Thanks for reading. ♥ I never see anyone mention this, I thought I'd say something.
Personal notes: I have found the supplement "Jubilance" (oxaloacetate) to be a huge help. Not a total fix, but a great relief. And therapy helps me a lot, too! Track your cycles, too!!

Idk if this’ll resonate with everyone, but I’m gonna say something. For as long as I can remember, I’ve always had bad menstrual cycles. HORRIBLE! So, in 2021, I had surgery to diagnose endometriosis. Now, I wanna talk about the two weeks leading up to my period. I usually get so extremely emotional. Like, PMS on steroids. I wanna talk about PMDD. Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder. While I’m not formally diagnosed with it, it resonates with me. I don’t want to trigger anyone with what goes in my mind, but I will say this. I’m a different person within that two week period and then BOOM! My period comes and it’s all sunshine and rainbows. So, in 2024, I’m gonna fight for a diagnosis. ‘Cause i definitely have it. There’s no doubt about it. Okay, thank you for reading lmfao ♥️

i really want a thread where johanna can celebrate (in her own johanna way) getting her period back. it’s an important part of her recovery and her internalized misogyny really impacts her relationship with it (plus the victorian view being very victorian) but she can be excited that she’s getting better :(
