Hey Tumblies, this is just a gentle reminder to rest up to the best of your ability when sick.
I know that finances and awful bosses and short-staffed workplaces don't always make it possible. But if you do have the opportunity to take a day off when sick, please do.
I see this particularly entering gray areas with people who work from home. Sometimes, if I'm only a little under the weather, WFH means I'm just less tired and less likely to infect everyone. That's a win, especially for disabled folks like me.
BUT right now, I'm really, genuinely sick. I was able to take the day off work except for 1 meeting I couldn't reschedule.
I just got off that meeting. It was a brief 15-minute check-in about a project. But man, when I hit "end meeting," I could feel the exhaustion creep in. It was like my brain had just gobbled up all my energy reserves to just follow along and pretend to be fine for 15 minutes.
So to conclude:
Mental energy is energy. Bodies need rest. You are not being unproductive. The product you are creating is a body that feels better.
(I could go deeper into the toxicity of productivity, but that's for another day).

Honestly, I had looked forward to go to the 30th anniversary of the queer club in town but... I guess I am just sort of not feeling it? Idk, I feel very exhausted lately like my everyday energy level is just less. It sucks not to be there and celebrate together with other queers but like we talked about in group this past thursday; sometimes a way to take care of ourselves and our mental health as queer people is knowing when to listen to your body and stay home.

That is one of the great mistakes people make: assuming that someone who does menial work does not like thinking. Physical labor is great for the mind, as it leaves all kinds of time to consider the world. Other work, like accounting or scribing, demands littler of the body--but siphons energy from the mind.

Sometimes I wish I had this mark on my body or clothes, showing a glass emptying everytime mental energy is draining and filling when I’m getting energy. Then, I wouldn’t have to explain to everybody why I don’t have the energy to do that or why I’m getting too tired and need isolate myself.

I read something in a fanfic yesterday that blew my mind in a "this could actually change my life kind of way."
I can't remember the exact quote, but it was along the lines of "he realised that if he gave exactly as much thought and energy to things as they deserved, his life was so much better."
Tumblr media
That is so so true and something I'm desperately trying to do to make myself healthier.
Someone you've never met talking shit on the Internet about someone else you've never met? Zero thought/energy.
Some rogue politician in another country that you have no mandate in doing something shitty? Tiny bit of thought/zero energy.
Instagram post not getting enough likes? Zero thought/energy.
Seriously. I realised a while ago that I have a very limited mental energy battery each day, and I have to consciously choose what I spend it on. I can't give thought and energy to everything otherwise I just end up catatonic.
TLDR: fanfic is fucking awesome and authors say some really profound things.

Calendar notification. Staff meeting.
Pays a few energy coins for concentration and focus.
Meeting: first 15 minutes.
Me: good. Note taking good.
Person A: tangent about jury duty.
Me: (pays double the energy coins to try to keep on track)
Person B: extend tangent
Person A: SECOND tangent
Person B: Triple extends tangent
Me: (furiously throwing energy coins at brain to stay focused on meeting, trying to verbally get back on track, looking at notes so mind doesn't wander. Struggle is now visible. Interpreted as Impatience by coworkers.)
Meeting get back on track.
Me: (stressed and tired)
Person B: THIRD AND FOURTH AND FIFTH UNRELATED TANGENT
Me: (Thousands of coin in debt, hanging by a thread, mind now furiously wandering in dozens of different directions for several trains of thought, anything being discussed is barely audible) @-@
Distant Beep
Me: (snaps back to reality extremely mentally exhausted and drained) THATS MY TIMER! (Speed reads through notes for confirmation and then runs out)
Tumblr media
Me: looks at notes. When did we talk about any of this?????????

The admin of the discord server for a new app I have messaged me asking me if I wanted to be a mod because I was really active, but I really don’t think I’m the best for that job or that I have the mental energy for it so I had to decline. But like, just forming the message back was so anxiety inducing and took much longer than the actual message was, and I finally just decided to send it, but now I’m still anxious about how I came across, and the fact that I declined to begin with😭😭

People will talk about 'diet culture', 'diet industry' and how we need to 'stop giving food a moral value' and 'stop demonizing food', and while it's true, that food has no 'moral value', it's also true, that some kinds of food are bad for your health in long term. Eating a burger or pizza doesn't make you a bad person (honestly, idk why someone would even think it does?), but if you eat it too often, it will make your body feel worse. And don't forget, that 'processed food industry' also exists, and doesn't care about your health and wellbeing. It's goal is (obviously) to sell you as many of it's products as possible, so this 'eat whatever you want, whenever you want' narrative actually works to it's advantage. Food doesn't have a moral value, but it has a nutritional value and consuming huge amounts of sugar, carbohydrates and artificial flavors can make you feel better emotionally for a moment, but definetely won't make you feel better, both physically and emotionally, in the future.

Can I trust this? Maybe not. If I don't do it, will it be worse to wonder if I would've lost? Making up scenarios over in my head. I take on life like the walking dead. Plaguing my thoughts with all I desire. I'll take the next drug to get me higher. Probability is my only cause. Fighting for a future that I may harshly judge. Bx

Declutter Relationships
Stop wasting your mental energy.
Daily writing promptWhere can you reduce clutter in your life?View all responses I don’t generally have any clutter as I told in my previous posts that I am a minimalist but to really answer this question, I guess I need to de-clutter my relationships. For a long time now, I have been holding on to people who used to be very close to me – my friends, but as time had made it clear, they no more…

gentle reminder that crying is actually one of the best things you can do to relieve all that tension and emotion in your brain, and not to resist the impulse because it's 'weak' or 'unnecessary' or 'a plea for attention.' if you need to cry, do it, even if you don't always know the reason. your body does.

Josh Duffney completed a personal project (a manuscript for his first non-technical book) and suddenly felt lost. He had hit a career plateau around this time. After focusing on the manuscript for 2-3 hours daily for 18 months, Josh realized he focused on one project for too long and neglected proper energy management along the way. In this interview, Josh talks about the difference between persevering and making a career pivot. If you're at a similar point and feeling lost in your career, this is an excellent discussion from which to learn.
