The most helpless I feel as a mental health counselor is when my clients are at risk of losing their housing. It’s so fucked up. Housing is a human right.

Have we talked about Esther Perel's marvelous red chair? That as a psychotherapist she has this red chair which is, incidentally, a jewel of furniture design, makes sense to me. She makes perfect sense speaking about the theater and her office of a psychotherapist. If I ever have a private practice with its own office (as opposed to doing my coaching or therapy sessions online), I would make sure I have one of those rare chairs (maybe not the same particular model Perel has, which, by the way, is called a womb chair). I also jokingly said to my girlfriends on multiple occasions that I would put a portrait of Freud onto the wall. To the idea of putting Freud on the wall those of my girlfriends who happen to have Ph.D.s in psychology strongly opposed. For sure, Freud can and should be criticized for a lot, and nobody who read Freud in our anthropology or philosophy seminars liked him also, but Freud was also the one who called attention to the inner life of the soul and paid scientific attention to dreams rather than dismissing and relegating the area of dream analysis to fortune tellers, and, finally, Freud was a beautiful and compelling writer even when what he wrote was not what we would accept. I think we don't need to agree with what writers say to enjoy the form in which they put their thoughts. In short, I am still tempted by the idea of a Freud's portrait and some fancy chair in my imaginary physical office. Judge me, but I would totally put a recamier sofa in my office as well! I said what I said 😆

Parents: The world’s a hard place, so we’re going to prepare you for it… by giving you trauma
Me: Damn, if the world’s a hard place… then I could use a sanctuary and some support 🥲

Mental Health Counselor in New York City.
Tumblr media
Summer is a first-generation American of Caribbean descent who believes that humans are multifaceted beings, and understanding each facet of one’s identity, as well as how these facets intersect are integral to understanding one’s overall being. A client’s racial identity is just as important as their gender identity, ethnic identity, spiritual identity, economic identity, and professional identity. Summer is passionate about creating a safe, affirming, and authentic space for all clients to express themselves, to feel heard, to feel seen, and to feel empowered. Summer's approach is eclectic, utilizing elements from humanistic, psychodynamic, and cognitive behavioral theories. For her, clients are an active participant in their treatment, in which she works collaboratively to help them along in their therapeutic journey and in their process of emotional healing.
Summer received her MA in Mental Health Counseling from CUNY Baruch College and her BS in Applied Psychology with a minor in Teacher’s Education from New York University. She completed her graduate internship at Love and Kindness Wellness Services, where she trained in Indigenous Tools for Living, an approach focused on considering the whole person, including their intergenerational ways of knowing and being, when assisting clients on their journey of personal development and creating a strong connection to their sense of purpose and meaning. When utilizing Indigenous Tools for Living, Summer is committed to healing complex trauma while bringing the core values of various communities and their traditions to the room. Summer’s background includes working with children in the New York City public school setting in addition to older adults who have experienced challenges associated with aging in Upper Manhattan.

More stuff that’s happened at my school!
•A kid had a screaming match with the gym coach in front of the entire lunchroom. The gym coach is an ass and probably deserved it.
•There was a gas leak. We had to evacuate.
•Still no Chem teacher lol.
•Apparently we don’t have a school counselor. I learned that when I had a panic attack and had to go home early.
•My Greek teacher is the most boring person alive. I’ve decided I’m just gonna skip Greek and go sit in the Latin teachers room because she’d A) Let me and B) She’s fun. I love her, she’s my second mother.
•Also they’re actually enforcing the dress code so we can’t wear high top sneakers, hoodies, shoes that aren’t brown, black, white, or navy, skirt lengths are being checked as well as shorts, no cargo pants, no baggy pants, the hair rules are dumb. Maybe they should work on having student resources and abiding by 504s and IEPs before they do stuff like dress code enforcement.

Being a therapist in therapy is so strange because I have the skills and knowledge to help others process trauma, learn to regulate emotions, etc. but I can’t help myself with those skills, I have to outsource that job to someone else who has those same skills.

MEN, Speak life over the woman in your life.
Don’t call them out of their name, woman are not B****es, h**s, sl**s, sk**ks or any other vulgar term you know of.
Respect them as you would want to be respected.
Understand that bodies change, we’re growing up and it’s inevitable.
Learn to love their heart, because the only thing outward appearance can do is please the eye.
Understand that woman are natural nurturers and they may overthink. Ease their mind and reassure them that all is well, instead of gaslighting them.
Be honest. No one wants to be stuck with a liar.
Take care of matters with her day to day. Let the stresses of tomorrow handle itself.
Love her with all of you, or leave. Don’t waste her time.

As you might remember, I am doing my Master's in Mental Health Counseling. The first semester flew by really quickly. This new semester, I will be taking three courses from the beginning and then the fourth since March. The courses that I am about to be taking are Advanced Ethics, Diagnosis and Treatment Planning, and Substance Abuse Counseling. Delightful! I am very much looking forward to them.
I began studying mental health counseling in hopes to bring some relief. I was pushed into this field by the war. I am looking forward to being able to alleviate some of the struggles of individuals, or, at least, this is an idea. It became clear to me that the world needs mental health counseling in far greater portions than it is able to attain. I am hoping to respond to this need. Not sure what else I can do. We will see if I am able to walk this path. Maybe not, but at least I am trying, keenly aware of the smallness of my efforts at the face of the disaster that is war.
