*banging fists on table* more mentally ill characters in stories that aren't just about them being mentally ill! More mentally ill characters in sci-fi, in fantasy, in romance and fun and high stakes situations and everything in between, as the heroes, as complex individuals, multifaceted and treated with respect, not having their needs and differences ignored or skirted around but, again, not having them be their only trait or plot point/entire premise! Please, I'm begging, on my hands and knees, there's a place for these topics and characters in realistic, reflective and literary fiction, yeah, but there's also a place in those magical, mystical, action packed, mysterious and alien worlds, give them to ME

Rewatching Arcane and I forgot how good the disability and mental health representation is in this show. It doesn’t romanticize or demonize them. The show doesn’t dehumanize or infantilize it’s characters. Arcane shows characters with disabilities and mental health conditions who aren’t weaker for it. It doesn’t take away from their goals or actions. It a show where people have advanced technology and access to magic, but it doesn’t use those things to magically make real medical issues go away. They also clearly put a lot of time and effort into making the portrayal of the symptoms and conditions feel as accurate as possible.
Is it without flaws? Not at all. It of course is still worthy of criticism in some aspects, and there are likely places they may have been able to do better in. However, it is still one of the best representations I’ve seen on screen to date.
As a disabled person and as someone with several of the mental health issues and conditions we see coded in these characters, I feel represented and seen. It made me feel like I can exist without being demonized or dehumanized. Like I could just be understood.

Do I ship it? No. Do I love their dynamic? Yes! Do I still love their dynamic when sex and/or obsession is added to the dynamic? Yes! Do I think it’s healthy and loving and good? No! Please don’t do it, you will suffer

I noticed there are not many remarks about Chu Ci of the Lantern and Po Yun written by Huai Shang, so I wanted to leave this for him.
While re-reading Po Yun I was reminded of Chu Ci's story (Lantern: Behold the Bayonet) and how I thought the ending was happy.
I weirdly feel guilty.
Rethinking it, it's rather sad and frightening that Chu Ci ended up with Han Yue. No matter how the author spins a bow with a happy wrapper, the ending was rather chilling.
I get that this abuser to lover and this disturbingly performed (I'm a better man now) is a common setting, and the author was probably trying to cater in that direction, but I don't think any of the novels of the same trope frightened me like Behold the Bayonet did.
Some say Han Yue detained, mentally and physically abused and raped Chu Ci because he truly loved him. Just his default love setting is violent
And that Chu Ci did not kill Han Yue because he at some point had come to have feelings for him.
No, I think Han Yue lived only because of Chu Ci's moral compass. He believed Han Yue didn't deserve death. And by the time Chu Ci chopped up the elder Han son as retribution to what happened to his family, there had already been a significant deterioration to his sanity.
He was suicidal, a mess of guilt, regret, conflicting with the satisfaction of literally dicing the older asshole and the dissatisfaction of not being able to do more triggering the guilt of having used his father's sacred teachings for something like this.
What's even painful is how we see that Chu Ci is alone, and how several times throughout the story we see characters imply or even directly say 'Just give in. You're actually lucky... Or you don't know how lucky you are.'
The author's attempt at making Han Yue decent by the end and showing Chu Ci live well is frightening, because by the end of it all I am questioning is if he is indeed happy or if the continuous dismissal of his plight, the overwhelming degree of disregard shown by the people around him when Han Yue abuses him has finally buckled him mentally.
I don't think anyone in the story has truly told him this genuinely caring for his wellbeing. So I am leaving this...
Chu Ci, you deserve better. You of all people truly deserve the best.
Everyone in this world deserves way better than someone like Han Yue.

^This is Icarus "Ick" [He/They], who's a rags to riches character by killing his monopolizing grandma (His late father's mom) who did nothing to help his mom to raise him and his brother 😃👍 (His mom died when he was 12 from overwork since she worked 4 jobs.)
Tumblr media
^This is Jules "Julie" [He/Him], who has raging BPD and was abused by his father since he was 9. Which led him to become a serial killer who's known as The One Eyed Weaper because of his mask (not shown). He's also half blind and covered in scars, showing his father's abuse. 🫠
Anyways, a bit of my characters from my "A Collection of the Clincally Insane" series. I'll do Happy and Vysion next

Romance
The main system has In Memory Of Us to work on, but it’s hard to communicate between main and subsystem about what projects we’re working on. For us, the subsystem, we are working on a currently nameless romance story about mental health and learning to love healthily beyond illnesses. Here is the opening portion:
“I can’t love you!”
Those words sunk their teeth into my fragile flesh and tore an ugly hole in my chest.
“I can’t love anyone like you.”
Her words were made of mud, slathered across my image.
“Like me?” I scoffed. “Like me?”
She spared me no details. To love me was to love a stone wall, a scarecrow, a worm. To love me was to tear your own chest open and bleed for someone who doesn’t care. To love me was to hate yourself.
I, she said, am unlovable.
