pleeeeease just let me rant
so obviously a lot of the hype for hamilton the musical has calmed down. it’s been almost ten years. the original cast has long since moved on, and you won’t find as many posts about it on tumblr, and a LOT less active fan fiction. i understand that it’s been a while. but-
hamilton the musical is a piece of artwork. it took Lin-Manuel Miranda seven years to write. its emotions are relatable, and powerful. ive yet to meet someone who hasn’t cried on watching it’s quiet uptown for the first time. the level of intense talent you need to even begin to attempt to write something like that is just beyond incredible.
“Just get over Hamilton it’s dead”
so the fandom’s less active. so what? it will continue to be beautiful. continue to be hilarious. continue to punch you in the gut. let hamilton the musical live. don’t be ashamed to stay in a fandom that’s been around for a while.
the original cast, and any cast after, has so much talent. Renée Elise Goldsberry rapping and singing in Satisfied has my heart. her delivery of It’s Quiet Uptown makes anyone sob. Daveed Diggs in Guns and Ships? anyone? fastest song on broadway EVER? and don’t even get me STARTED on Pippa Soo, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Okieriete Onoadowan, Leslie Odom Jr, Chris Jackson, Anthony Ramos. And as for Lin-Manuel Miranda, what can i say?
listen to hamilton. love hamilton. sing and rap hamilton. be a nerd about hamilton. let people judge you. it’s their loss. anyone who wants to go a life without understanding these emotions, this power, that Lin-Manuel Miranda squeezed into 2 and a half hours, well, that’s their problem.
be a hamilfan. and don’t let anyone give you shit for it.

sorry to bother but I saw ya talk about kirin lore and Mine etc? Specifically about kirin and the full moon? Do you have any stuff I could look at about kirin myth that I could look at? (its cool if its a Japanese source I'll force myself to learn to read it) Or just any thoughts on kirin and Mine in general I've been going ham on stupid kirin-Mine AU lately and its relevant fhdkfd
I'm glad you asked! Unfortunately I'm not positive I saved any of my sources... anywhere, but the good news is I do remember most of my findings in detail and have been itching to post about them. So! I'm taking this opportunity to analyze Mine's tattoo top-to-bottom.
And I'm also approaching this as a sort of redemption arc, because a lot of interpretations of Mine's tattoo out there are based on what I wrote on the wiki. It's not that they're incorrect per se, but there is so much more to it than what the wiki currently goes into, and I'd like to share that with you all today.
I'll start off with some official statements, and because it comes up later, establish the original version of the tattoo Horitomo designed is actually this version with green fur (pictured below):
Like the word kirin-ji, this is a design that evokes the image of a genius. To be honest, the majority of depictions give kirins the face of a dragon, but with a composition like this where it's soaring upwards, you risk ending up with a tattoo that looks too much like Kiryu's. So I looked into some older material, and while it's not too common, I went with a type of kirin that more closely resembles a deer.
— Horitomo
It wants to rise above, but chooses to put itself second and use its talent and intellect to support the "king"—the kirin suits Mine, doesn't it? So, with that general concept in mind, we went through several designs done in pencil, went back and forth on various aspects, until we settled on the direction we wanted to take. And after that, the detailed version of the design was produced.
— Masayoshi Yokoyama
With Yokoyama's comment, it's clear what the core meaning of his tattoo was meant to be from the beginning. Because a Like a Dragon tattoo represents more than just a summation of who the character is as the audience knows them or their role in the narrative, but who they were before joining the yakuza, why they joined the yakuza, what the motivation was behind their choice of subject, how elements of the tattoo reflect on characters who share the same elements (and vice versa), and how the meaning the tattoo evolves over time in relation to the character's fate.
So my main... misgiving, let's say... with popular interpretations of Mine's tattoo is that they focus solely on Daigo without examining how it relates to anything else. Again, partly my fault, I'll cop to that, but this is an issue with a lot of analysis of Mine as a character... and it's a little frustrating, isn't it? It is for me. But enough complaining, it's showtime:
Some notes design-wise: the decision to portray Mine's kirin as deer-like rather than dragon-like specifically to distance him from Kiryu says a lot about their characters to me. Because Mine is, in a lot of ways, "the complete opposite, or antithesis, of Kiryu." (Yokoyama) But the kirin is ultimately in the "dragon" family of mythological creatures; as such, Mine, no matter how much he tries to set himself apart from Kiryu, will always parallel Kiryu.
This is exactly what I was talking about with regard to how tattoos come to change in meaning over time; it's not insanely prophetic, it's something that makes complete sense in-universe, makes sense for Mine to get at the time he got it, but it also ends up representing his relationship with Kiryu so well.
The fact the kirin is in the "dragon" family of mythological creatures, in combination with the original green coloring, is also notable. Because the dragon depicted in Daigo's tattoo is the same shade of green.
There are multiple "species" of kirin, denoted by the color of their fur, which corresponds to one of the five phases (五行, gogyō), originating from the concept of wuxing in Chinese philosophy.
The word "kirin," strictly speaking, refers to kirin with yellow fur and corresponds to Earth, which is associated with stability, hard work, ambition, and stubbornness. Kirin with green fur are known as shoko (聳孤, shōko) and correspond to Wood, which is associated with luxuriant growth, vitality, strength, and co-operation.
Speaking of the five phases, that also ties into the concept of the Four Gods, a motif explored with the protagonists of Yakuza 4: Kiryu is the Azure Dragon, Akiyama is the Vermillion Bird, Saejima is the Black Turtle, and Tanimura is the White Tiger, representing Wood, Fire, Water, and Metal respectively. The "Fifth God," representing Earth, is widely considered to be a kirin. This doesn't really relate to anything though, just food for thought for the Protagonist Mine enjoyers (me <3)
A great deal of the meaning behind Mine's tattoo is etymological in nature.
The word "qilin" itself represents a duality: "qi" refers to a female kirin, "lin" refers to a male kirin, and "qilin" refers to the species as whole. The kirin is said to embody yin and yang. And I think this aspect works perfectly with who Mine is as a character often torn between two extremes.
He, like the kirin, has the capacity for both benevolence and ferocity, and like the kirin, only becomes violent in retaliation to violence or out of a sense of protectiveness. Also, in a very literal sense, Mine has both Yin cards and Yang cards in Ryu Ga Gotoku Online, which very few characters do due to their contradictory nature.
As Horitomo mentions, the design has basis in the word "kirin-ji" (麒麟児, child prodigy, lit. "kirin child"). A lot of people already know this (anyone who's read this post certainly does, at any rate), but fewer are familiar with the origin of the term. In Ancient China, there was a belief that the appearance of a kirin heralds the birth (and death) of a gifted son with a promising future, beliefs held around Confucius being a famous example.
Of course, this relates to Daigo in terms of the association with leaders, but it also relates to Mine himself, who views his younger self as a sort of diamond-in-the-rough, a "gem shining brilliantly by the wayside." This reinforces that the tattoo is not just a meta representation of him, but directly relates to how he views himself.
Additionally, the kanji that comprise "shoko" read as "soar" (聳, shō; as in, to rise above something) and "orphan" (孤, ko) respectively.
On that note, kirin are capable of flight, which can obviously be connected to his ambition ("rising above" his origins), his theme, and his method of suicide. They hover off of the ground so as to not trample blades of grass, and are often depicted as walking on clouds (which are, of course, depicted in Mine's tattoo). Some kirin even have wings!
Circling back to the note about violence to talk about the kirin's ability in battle: kirin are ferocious combatants and known to have a very strong hind kick; Mine mainly uses his legs to fight. I believe his "red heat state," where he's at his most aggressive, also represents the fire surrounding his kirin. Kirin may use flames to attack.
Kirin are also thought to be the only creatures who can defeat a dragon, and I would argue Mine is the only final boss who even manages to come close to defeating Kiryu. I actually would even argue he did win, since he had more stamina left.
Just reiterating for the sake of being thorough, but as mentioned in the ask, kirin are thought to be at their most volatile and at their most powerful during a full moon. You only see it in one shot, but the finale of Yakuza 3 does in fact take place under a full moon. Mine is, of course, shown to be both of those things in the finale.
There's also some sort of association between kirin and thunder/lightning, at least in popular media. Mine and his tattoo are depicted surrounded by lightning in one of his cards, and the "Hakuho Clan Pin" item that came out at the same time has an ability called Roaring Thunder. I'm not sure why this is the case. Perhaps it's to do with the kirin's association with the sky, since thunder and lightning are celestial phenomena.
With that, I believe I've covered everything I wanted to touch on. Thank you for reading and for the opportunity, and I hope I've "redeemed myself" adequately!

ㅤㅤㅤㅤ𝐌𝐔𝐘𝐀𝐍𝐆 & 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐑𝐎𝐀𝐃 𝐇𝐄 𝐖𝐀𝐋𝐊𝐒.
𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐒𝐓 𝐆𝐋𝐀𝐍𝐂𝐄.
Was it a blessing or a curse? To gaze upon the celestial being when he was but a mere young boy, trying to save a handful of already wilted flowers. Splashing water upon crumpled petals could never bring it back, the end of a life meant for a new one. But still, the young and soft-hearted Muyang persisted― some part of him was willing to believe that it would come back.
A splash and another, and another.
The way his heart quivered within his chest when he found it proved to be useless, it hurt him all the same...even if they were just flowers. Yet, in his mind, Muyang remembered the way his Mother looked at these blossoms when she watered them. The effort and love gone into taking care of them could never be overlooked.
Tears welled up within his ruby hues, he did not know why he was sad over a small thing like this, but he was. Muyang hugged the dead flowers close and shut his eyes. The only thought that revolved in his mind was his wish to be able to save it, to save the things that were meant to be loved and meant to live.
A bright glow from the sky soon permeated his closed lids and the small child's eyes fluttered open to look. The swift flurry of white petals brushed against his cheeks and he soon found himself staring into the gaze of Yaoshi, the Abundance.
Their many red eyes that inhabited their body followed the Plague Author's glance as one of their many arms came to tap Muyang's nose and chin lightly. The entity smiled at him, a gentle expression that befitted its benevolent nature, before collecting his escaping tears to form a small, glittering bubble.
With a single lithe digit, it guided the droplet towards those wilting flowers that he held tight in his grasps. The child followed their every action, mouth open in awe and confusion. Soon after, Yaoshi's long nail poked at the bubble, popping it and the clear sap soon fell onto the dull petals.
A chime in the distance, the both of them existed on a green field of ashen flowers. The ones in his hands soon bounced back into life, as though time had been reverted, as though it never died.
And as swiftly as Yaoshi appeared, the glow and their silhouette faded just as quick.
The Path of Abundance was bestowed upon him thereafter. The potential of his kindness had been acknowledged, and he would continue on his path as the way he was― an individual that had too much love to give in this world.
𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐂𝐀𝐍𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐃𝐄𝐍𝐘 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐒 𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐇 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐖𝐄𝐑𝐄 𝐒𝐄𝐓 𝐔𝐏𝐎𝐍.
That naive boy had grown into a young man, but still his heart beat in the same tone as before.
But in time, he was proven wrong again and again. The kindness and love that he once held so high in regard, glowing and warm, would eventually tumble down into a pile of dark mud. The blessing from that Aeon had become a curse as he watched the ones closest to him disappear underneath the powers of Yaoshi.
Long-lived or short-lived, all life was fragile in the end. And Muyang, with his power from the Abundance, found himself powerless again and again.
The golden leaves that still embedded itself into Guangyang's spear till today.
The fear and love he had for an armored monstrosity, a ghost of his Father.
The empty gaze of his dead Mother as the mara-struck swallowed both of his parents whole.
The way he stood by, frozen.
Useless― so utterly useless.
His resolve wavered after, that kindness he had did not seem appealing anymore. The field of flowers he walked upon started to become paler and the petals did not glow as bright anymore. Every part of him that once seemed beautiful had become weak and ugly.
Muyang changed ever since then. His red hues no longer glowed like they used to and the usual laughter did not escape his lips anymore. The heart in his chest that had been so warm eventually grew cold.
Or so he thought. Little did he know that his determination would be tested once more. If that nail into his chest was not enough, then life would put many more down again.
Commander Guiying's body was environed with the same kind of gold.
Muyang knew what he had to do this time, but still, history repeated itself once more.
In the end, Lingyun was the one who carried his duty out, while the other remained a coward to the very end.
How funny. To think that he had change, to think that he had steeled his heart enough for what was to come. The helplessness seeped in again and Muyang found himself trapped within the abyss that stared back at him. He was nothing but a body full of failures and empty resolve. A crucification of his own guilt and errors.
Would destroying all of himself be the only measure? If so, he would gladly do so.
Muyang trampled on the flowers in his own field, until none of them survived the wrath of his grief.
𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐘𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐓𝐀𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐒 𝐒𝐖𝐄𝐄𝐓 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐒𝐄 𝐃𝐄𝐒𝐏𝐀𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐄 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐖𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐑.
More time passed. The grass and flowers remained dull.
He was but a shadow of his former self. Muyang tried not to feel, not to harbour any emotions. The walls around him only grew thicker and the darkness in his gaze became much more profound.
Everything remained as it were, until he saw the red that almost took away Lingyun's silver eyes. The Mara that he nearly succumbed to, that nearly took him away from this world and Muyang.
He could not fathom what he would have to do in that situation. A sword through Lingyun's heart? If it were not for Fuli, then Muyang would have been helpless once more. The fact that it almost became reality was scary and he...was scared.
Of course, Lingyun had recovered from that quite quickly but what if it happened again? What then?
Would he be able to step up to the plate?
The rising doubt within his mind encircled him, like a blot of dark ink upon white paper. Something inside of him cracked into a million pieces and shattered simultaneously. Everything that was built up inside of him had been let go after that incident.
What could he do to change this? What could he do to deny this path that he no longer wanted?
Everything he had done to protect them was useless. The willingness to sacrifice himself did not even suffice. It happened to Lingyun regardless and life would take him away anytime again.
What was the point of it all? Love and kindness, if it did not help anyone.
What was the point of anything? What was the point of his existence?
If he could not protect anyone that he held close―
Useless... Muyang, you do not deserve to be here. In the end, you will lose everyone.
The despair engulfed him like a venus flytrap engulfed its pray. A single snap and he found himself melting into the universe.
The burning sensation in his body welled up within his chest. That familiar aureate hue surrounded his vision, it was soft like leaves on a tree but sprouted mercilessly from every part of his body. Flesh ripped apart, but a hardened shell was born anew.
He was turning. That much he knew. But somehow, he was too tired to fight it...
Still, Muyang's hand reached out for the darkness that consumed him after. Something in him did not give up even when anguish set his body aflame. A stubbornness that he always failed to shake off.
Hope. There was still hope, was there not?
In spite of this sadness, somewhere deep down... Muyang still wished to help Lingyun even if he was weak.
He could not afford to die or turn. Not now. Not ever.
❝ Don’t cry. Don’t cry. We’ll fix it. It’s alright. I’m here, am I not? ❞
❝ Mumu. Mama and Baba will always love you... no matter what. ❞
❝ Muyang. You are always so gentle... but that's a good thing, is it not? ❞
Lingyun, his parents and Guiying. The multitude of voices rung true to his ears, like a choir who sang its song.
A wave swept him up roughly. His chest heaved for the first time in awhile. Red hues opened themselves and looked towards the sky.
𝐇𝐎𝐏𝐄 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐀 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐍𝐆𝐄 𝐁𝐔𝐓 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐄 𝐈𝐒 𝐍𝐎𝐍𝐄 𝐀𝐓 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐂𝐎𝐑𝐄.
Muyang looked towards the sky, in hopes of another kind of blessing. An Aeon that was different. Had he not shown enough change? Had he not hardened his core and thrown away enough of that gentleness?
But the one he gazed upon was still Yaoshi.
The same god.
The same him.
❝ Why are you here? ❞
He began, bitter words were spoken through gritted teeth. The rage that fueled his crimson gaze only grew brighter, his anger was incomprehensible and indescribable. How dare they appear before him once more. The very being who took away all that he loved and yet, the very being that gave him hope at some point.
The Aeon did not speak but instead they laughed, a soft chuckle erupted from their lips as though everything was fine.
❝ Get away from me! You are not someone I will EVER follow. This path is not yours to take. Not anymore. ❞
But Yaoshi chose him before and Yaoshi will choose him again.
❝ I do not need your pity or your kindness. I would rather die than drink your poisonous nectar. ❞
The Plagues Author drew closer to him, as though they did not heed a single word from the man. A single golden leaf sprouted from their hand and Yaoshi blew at it gently. It dried up and wilted in an instant before crumbling into dust that disappeared along with the winds.
Yaoshi's smile grew wider before fading into nothingness. And Muyang found himself standing on a green field again. It was filled to the brim with white flowers.
A lesson from the Aeon, themselves. Something that he could never understand but what was apparent to him, was that...Muyang remained as he were. Unchanged. No matter how much he denied it and no matter which path he took, he ended up in the same place.
A cycle that kept going round and round.
Destruction and then... salvation.
Muyang found himself waking up in his bed, dried leaves surrounding him and familiar silver eyes that gazed at him with worry.
You were always destined to tread down Yaoshi's path.
Do not deny who you are, Lin Muyang.
