squeezing hand for comfort and encouragement from the hand prompts for syldue (any mermaid arrangement you like!
It's Dedue's turn to be a mermaid! This one is kinda canon-adjacent, you could say?
(Taking MerMay Rarepair prompts until the end of May!)
--
Some part of Sylvain wondered if he should take his clothes off. He had been standing waist deep in the ocean-- still wearing his jacket, shirt, pants, and sandals-- for some time now. The part of him not wondering about his attire was contemplating the orb in his hand.
The orb was made of translucent green glass, with a turquoise gem suspended in the middle. It weighed almost nothing. Sylvain held it up to the morning sun, watching the way the light cast greenish freckles on the still water around him.
"You disapprove," Sylvain stated.
Not far ahead of him, about where the shore dropped off into deeper water, was Dedue. The merman's long, thick tail was teal, with a jagged stripe of orange and yellow scales around his torso where it met brown skin. His white hair was pulled back with a hairtie Sylvain had gifted him back when they first met.
Dedue frowned at Sylvain's words. "I only worry."
"You're good at that."
"You said yourself that this spell from Annette is temporary," Dedue went on, swimming close enough that he had to lay across the sand. "I know you wish to escape the burdens of your crest, but I worry you will forever mourn a life you cannot get back to."
Sylvain lowered the glass orb. "I can just ask Annette to make more. Or a stronger one. Or even a permanent one, if I gave her enough time!" He said it like it was a joke, but he could tell Dedue saw right through him.
"Remember that life in the ocean has its own struggles."
"I know."
"You will be trading crest problems for other ones."
"Yeah, but..." Sylvain moved forward, the water now up to his thighs. He reached out and took Dedue's hand. "The ocean's got you. That's enough for me."
Dedue's steel grey eyes rounded before he let out a warm chuckle. He squeezed Sylvain's hand. "I am not trying to talk you out of this, you understand. There is much I wish to show you under the ocean."
Sylvain grinned. "Can't wait." He knelt in the water, soaking his clothes with a sense of finality. Taking a deep breath of air-- his last for the next 24 hours-- Sylvain clutched the orb in his hand.
It cracked, fractured, and broke. The gem that had be suspended inside grazed Sylvain's palm.
Pain instantly spiked through Sylvain's chest and he gasped, a sharp thing that only hurt him more. His legs cramped horribly. Shutting his eyes tight, Sylvain grit his teeth, back bowing as he tried to hold in another cry. Dedue was speaking to him but none of the words could make it past the pain.
Squeezing Sylvain's hand again, Dedue pulled Sylvain under the waves.
Cool saltwater instantly soothed Sylvain's body. Dedue pulled Sylvain deeper, until the sand disappeared from under them, and Sylvain unfurled.
A sunset orange tail trailed after him. Slack jawed, Sylvain ran his hand across the delicate scales, marveling at the subtle stripes of turquoise just visible when the tail turned the right way. When he turned his tail the right way. Sylvain flipped his tail giddily. It was so easy to control, as if his torso had always ended in a mermaid's tail.
"It worked!" He exclaimed, probably unnecessarily. "Dedue, I can--"
Dedue kissed him. With one hand against Sylvain's lower back, Dedue wrapped his tail around Sylvain's, lacing their fingers together. Usually their kisses caused one of them to be in some awkward position to accommodate the other; Sylvain kneeling in seashells or Dedue craning his neck up. Sea and land weren't meant to fold together neatly.
This was the closest they had ever been to one another. And it was heaven.
Sylvain rest his free hand on Dedue's shoulder, sinking into the kiss. He wasn't sure if the tail tangling part was a typical mermaid thing or Dedue showing relief that the spell worked-- and he didn't care. Sylvain had water in his lungs, a strong hand in his grip, and Dedue over his mouth. Nothing else mattered in that moment.
It was Dedue who pulled away first. He touched his forehead to Sylvain's, uncurling their tails but still holding Sylvain close. "How do you feel?" He asked.
"Better than ever," Sylvain replied, lips still tingling.
"Good." Dedue drew back with a smile. "Then let us be off. The Duscur Sea awaits."

L’Escala to Elne
Today was part 1 of ticking off a couple of bucket list items and helping a friend at the same time. For years we’ve talked about putting on a backpack and cycling somewhere for the night and back again the next day.
Jose has ridden into France a couple of times with the fast group and has wanted to do the ride with me. While we were on Odyssey Sam was talking to Jose about an alternate route into France for the Hannibal Tour. It was pretty much the same ride. So voila here we are riding Sam’s proposed new route into France.
The first nearly 30km was a ride we know well and we stopped at a favourite bakery for morning tea. From there for me it was all new. We wound up through vineyards and then passed cork trees and then the road really started going up and down and we were crossing the lower Pyrenees.
It’s amazing how an innocuous backpack that feels like it weighs nothing suddenly doesn’t feel so innocuous once you start climbing. To be fair we had pinches of 10% and above and I was really noticing the 4-5kgs on my back. Jose of course was completely unfazed 🤦‍♀️
At the top we were in France, though unfortunately there was no sign saying so just the French drivers (🙄) and the signs now all being in French. It was a steep descent down and I was very thankful we weren’t going over that way.
Past the steep part of the descent it was then a really lovely roll through vineyards and then we veered off course and rode the 1km to the coast for lunch at Banyuls-sur-mer.
From lunch we started to climb again. By now it was quite hot and there wasn’t much relief on the climb. I did suffer a bit on this climb and had to stop a few times, but I wasn’t suffering enough not to appreciate how beautiful it was, with views out to the ocean.
From the top there were a few sharpish hairpins and then it was a nice descent. The last 17km was a bit interesting. It’s always difficult once you come off the backroads and are making your way into a town. Unfortunately there were a lot of pretty awful road surfaces and by now I was getting tired (and maybe a tad grumpy). I was so happy when we finally arrived at our hotel in Elne.
First order was a drink before heading to our room for a shower and to wash out our kit. Lovely as it was on the bed we did muster ourselves and go for a walk around the old town. It’s a nice little place but not a whole lot to see and the walk ended with a drink near the cathedral.
The part of France we are in is also Catalan, they were even selling Catalan souvenirs where we bought our drinks.
Dinner tonight at the hotel’s restaurant out on the terrace. It was a lovely evening, weather wise. We had the menu of the day, which I’m pretty glad about as others weren’t wholly impressed with their meals.
Now I’m finishing this blog and then I think it will lights out 😴

Rättegången inleddes i december 1992.

Gone - L’Escala to Grandrieu, France
Wednesday morning we slept in, which wasn’t good as we had heaps to do. In the morning we did a few errands in town and then it was all about packing and cleaning. Jose picked Tessi up in the afternoon and parked her in the caravan park here. They think we’re mad that we live in L’Escala and yet are regularly at the campground.
Late afternoon we did a couple of runs with gear to Tessi. Needless to say we really only managed the very start and the last 13km of Le Tour.
It’s still hot and humid here so at 8pm we collapsed hot and exhausted into the sea before some tapas at one of the local bars for dinner.
I set an alarm for Thursday as we really couldn’t afford to sleep in again 🙄 The morning was spent taking the last things (including bikes) out of the apartment and over to Tessi and doing the final clean. Unfortunately neither of us were feeling flash, something had definitely disagreed with us.
We then left the caravan park, did a run to storage and we were on the road around 1pm. I really enjoyed the drive today. We decided to use the toll ways but it was still very picturesque. We pretty much headed straight up from L’Escala, so went from sea around Narbonne (which is an area it seems Charles Trenet comes from (the man who sang the original La Mer)), passed loads of vineyards and on into the Auvergne, before veering right into the Languedoc-Rousillon region (lots of lovely cows).
Jose had found a very rural caravan park which is really idyllic though a little chilly for us tonight given we’ve gone from the coast to about 1150m. Thankfully whatever was ailing us in the morning has passed.
We had nibbles and dinner outside but then retreated inside to watch the highlights of today’s Tour stage. Today appears to be an aberration and normal temperatures will resume tomorrow.
