Thinking about non-human whumpees being kept in the wrong enclosure.
Whumper who decides to stick the avian in the mer tank, and the werewolf who’s afraid of heights get shoved into the avian’s cage, hanging above Whumper’s staircase.
The avian desperately struggling to keep their head above the water as their wings slowly drag them under, unbearably heavy and water-logged. Mer Whumpee slowly swims around them, curious, but too afraid to help under Whumper’s watchful gaze, trying to ignore the horrible spluttering sounds and cries for help Avian Whumpee is making.
Meanwhile, Werewolf Whumpee is curled up in the fetal position in the center of the cage, trying their best not to move and send the whole thing swinging, thinking anxiously about the full moon later that night. They lay there, wondering if the untamed chaos of their wolf form will send the whole thing crashing down onto the cold marble floor below. Will they wake up tomorrow in a puddle of their own blood, the wreckage of the cage around them and the wrath of Whumper waiting to greet them?

Behold!!!! The piece that got delayed by my surprise visit to death prevention jail end of last year!
This is my submission to @thewhumpyprintingpress's ABCs of Whump zine!!! It's available for purchase, go check it out :)
I was so excited to participate, and it was such a pleasure :) This piece took a while, and it is right on the edge of my current capabilities as an artist, but it was incredibly fun and rewarding to work on, I'm very proud of how it turned out <3
Featured is my mer shifter boi Pete from my fav project Shifting Phases :) I love him very much and could not resist another oppourtunity to have a work featuring him published.
(I had to scrunch it significantly to get Tumblr to take it ^-^')

Hi! I hope it’s okay to ask this (and if it’s not please just ignore me, I’m still learning the ropes of this community!) I saw your merwhump post from a few days ago and I was wondering if you might have any ideas for scenarios where the whumpee and the whumper are both mers? Merwhump is one of my favorite tropes, but so many of them seem to involve a human whumper, and I’ve been looking for some inspiration where humans aren’t involved. Again, please forgive me if this isn’t the place to ask something like this!
Hi Anon! This is exactly the right place to ask something like that, and I'm so glad you did!
You're right that there isn't much whump where both are mers, so I hope this helps. (And I got a little carried away, sorry 😆😁)
Mer whump with two mers:
Saltwater would be uncomfortable and even painful for a mer accustomed to freshwater, and vice versa. Whumper could kidnap whumpee and drag them into whichever water they weren't used to. Imagine a freshwater mer experiencing the sting of salt water in their wounds for the first time, or trying to breath in water that makes their gills sting.
What if, like with humans, whumpee was allergic to certain things found in their environment, such as types of seaweed? For example, whumper could forcibly contain them in a patch of seaweed that made their skin itch, or expose them to secretions of fish that irritated their gills.
Different mers would be used to different depths of water, so whumper could pull whumpee down to a depth they weren't used to and keep them there, or pull them up to a shallow part of the water. Imagine a shallow water mer suffering under the pressure of deeper water, or a deep water mer feeling dizzy in shallow water.
In the same vein, different temperatures. A mer used to warmer water might get the mer version of frostbite, for example, if the mer whumper kept them in colder water; or a cold water mer might overheat in warmer water.
Also, a mer used to shallower, warmer water would be used to light, and a mer used to deep, cold water would be used to darkness. Imagine the mer being pulled down into the dark and being unable to see, or feeling deep water creatures brushing against them, the touch of teeth they'd never felt before; or a dark mer being blinded by the light of shallow water.
And what if whumper and whumpee were two different types of mer? What if the mer whumpee was a harmless type of mer, while whumper's type was known to be wild, dangerous, unpredictable? Or, switch them around and make it more interesting: whumper's variety is usually tamer and lives in colonies, while whumpee's is the "lone shark" type.

Writing this down before I forget
Mer whump where the captain of a ship captures a mer (like a spiky pointy deep sea kinda mer) and puts it in a tank/net
Except captain is not only harming the mer but also their crew members
During their journey the captain rarely has anyone feed the mer and it becomes hungry and eventually the crew members get so angry at their captain that they FEED THEM TO THE MER

Meeting Kai
Credit and big thanks to @deckofaces for inspiring how Kai and Y/N met! (Note- y/f/c= your favorite color)
Kai Masterlist
Y/N swam between schools of fish, looking for anything out of the ordinary. Any magical object, maybe something to wish on; she wasn’t sure what to look for, but she was desperate enough to look anyway. Since being cursed, she would turn into a mermaid anytime she touched water. That included a shimmering, y/f/c tail, webbed ears, and little scales peppered sparsely across her body. Her mer form was beautiful, but it was a hassle at best, even if it did include the ability to breathe underwater.
Y/N was so focused on treasure hunting that she didn’t notice the shadow forming over her until it was too late. Y/N looked up just as a net descended beneath the surface. Her and the schools of fish began to swim in evasive patterns. Their efforts were in vain, however; the fish were caught immediately, and Y/N with them. Y/N struggled to get out of the net, but her tail and arms had gotten tangled in it during her efforts to escape. Y/n could do nothing but struggle and wait for the net to get hauled up out of the water.
Within moments, she was hauled on deck of a pirate ship. The fish around her flopped helplessly in the net. Y/N got smacked in the face several times by their fins.
“Good work men,” a voice echoed, “we’ll be able to fetch a fair price for these at port.”
Fishermen. Hopefully they were the benevolent type.
Y/N yelped as the net was dragged across the ground.
“Wait,” the voice said, “what is that?”
The net stopped moving, and Y/N was uncomfortably aware that she was being watched. A young man stood over her, a grin on his face.
“Hello there,” he said, “what have we here?”
              “Um, hello,” Y/N said sheepishly.
Y/N tried to wave, but the net tangled around her arms made that difficult.
“Hehe,” Y/N laughed nervously, “I was just passing by when your net caught me. I don’t suppose you could…?”
Y/N looked down at the tangled mess for emphasis. The fisherman blinked, then laughed.
“Of course, little fish,” he said, “hold still.”
The fisherman dragged Y/N to the center of the deck, then pulled out a knife. He cut through the ropes, being careful not to hurt Y/N.
“Thank you,” Y/N said, “thank you very much.”
“It’s no trouble at all,” the fisherman said, “my name is Kai, what might you be called?”
“I’m Y/N,” Y/N answered, “now if you could just throw me back, I’ll be out of your hair.”
Kai smiled. He wordlessly slid an arm under Y/N’s tail and another behind her back, lifting her up in a bridal carry. Y/N tried to ignore how Kai’s men gawked at her as he carried her, not to the ship’s railing, but to the captain’s cabin.
“Wait, where are we going!?” Y/N asked, “you have to throw me back!”
“But we’ve only just met, little fish,” Kai said, “it would be rude to leave without getting to know each other first. Not that I’ll be letting you leave, but the point still stands.”
              “What!?”
“As captain of Calypso’s Wrath, I am responsible for managing all of the treasure we collect. And you are certainly the finest addition to the collection.”
Calypso’s Wrath? That did not sound like a fisherman’s ship.
              “Y-you,” Y/N gulped, “you’re not a fisherman, are you?”
Kai looked down at Y/N and laughed out loud.
“What a naïve little thing you are,” Kai said, “I am Kai Nelson, the captain of the most feared pirate ship this side of the globe.”
As Kai spoke, he set Y/N down in a large, glass tank filled with water.
“I was going to use this to house rare species of fish,” Kai explained, “but you’re more valuable than anything else I could catch.”
“Please,” Y/N said, sitting up so that her upper half poked out of the tank, “let me go. I haven’t done anything to you, I’m nothing of value-”
A backhanded slap tore across Y/N’s face faster than she could perceive it.
“Nothing of value?” Kai said darkly, “I’ll be the judge of that. I don’t want to hear you talk about yourself with any lesser treatment than you deserve. Understand?”
Y/N nodded with wide eyes, rubbing the side of her face.
“Alas, little treasure, I must leave you for now,” Kai said, “the men get rowdy without instruction you know.”
Kai left the room, closing the cabin door behind him. The reality of Y/N’s situation sunk in and tears welled in her eyes. Y/N would cry for a good long while before the beginnings of an escape plan would form in her mind.

Whumpcember Day 7: Fainting
CWs: merman whumpee; recent impalement and medical treatment; medical whump; fainting
A followup to this drabble.
Zale saw what happened in the next half hour, but he couldn't bring himself to comprehend it.
This is all a nightmare, and I don't pay them any mind, he kept thinking to himself. But he didn't dare try to pinch himself awake.
Just in case that didn't wake him up.
From the dinghy to the lift* to a spray-thrashed surface of metal and railing and people. humans. They were everywhere, and more flooded in to poke and prod at Zale as the two men who'd speared him took him inside. Zale had no intention of trying to get out of their grasp -- he was in too much terror to speak, let alone move -- but they had tied tape around his wrists and, finding him too slippery for that to work, lashed rope around them instead. One man carried him by the tail. The other merely walked beside him, keeping the other workers at a safe distance, as Zale's head and torso were dragged across the rig.
He started to accept that maybe this wasn't a nightmare when the second man leaned down to help the other toss him onto a table.
"Stay back, everyone, he looks like he could bite!" the first shouted. "Halloway, get in here! I need you to take a look at this freak!"
A burly man stepped into view. Zale blinked up at him, helpless. He had never breathed for so long on the surface, and he felt lightheaded.
Halloway shined a light at his eyes. Zale flinched back -- the light was harsh, and his eyes were adapted to dim light -- and human hands gripped his jaw to still him. Then the man shined his flashlight at Zale's webbed, tied hands. Then at his gills. He examined all up and down the mer's body, prodding him and flipping him over to get a better look, before he finally straightened and turned to the watching humans.
"Well goddamn," he said. "And here I thought they were just a myth." He chuckled. "Brimmer, you're telling me you caught a goddamn mermaid and it's not even a lady? Look at that thing!"
"I think it's pretty androgynous," Brimmer -- the first man -- said defensively as the others laughed. Zale twitched as he looked around for the scuba diver, but he couldn't find a trace of him.
"We gotta record this," someone from the crowd of people said, and suddenly a dozen black rectangles were being held out over Zale. The merman flinched back and, not knowing what they were about to do to him, panicked. "Please, I promise I won't bite!" he yelped.
But, to his horror, all that came out was a garbled, guttural hiss.
The humans drew back. "Ewwwww. That thing sounds like death choking on a horse cock," someone said with disgusted glee. Zale tried to speak again, but he couldn't form the words. To his horror, he realized that it had been ages since he had spoken above water. Did he even know how to? The speaking process was so much easier down in the depths; speaking in open air required a whole different set of muscles. He tried to think back to a time when he'd done it, but now that he thought back, he realized that all of his conversations with the research team humans had happened underwater.
Halloway rolled his eyes. "Of course it sounds weird, James. It's a fucking monster. Look at those eyes and tell me that thing is remotely human."
"Do mermaids cry?" Someone asked.
"Nah, I think he's just wet."
"Isn't he a merman and not a maid? Because I'm pretty sure mermaids would be a helluva lot prettier," said a third.
"Are we going to throw him back in yet?" a new voice asked.
Heads turned, but Zale wasn't in a position to see. All he could do was listen.
"What?" the voice continued. "We're here for oil, not weird looking fish."
Brimmer let out a disbelieving laugh. "You divers aren't the brightest sometime, Douglas. You think we're gonna let something like this go?"
Douglas sounded distinctly dissatisfied. "Not my fault for asking. I figured you would, since there's a giant spear stuck in his side. He's bleeding out, you idiot. Aren't you a doctor?"
Halloway faltered and looked at Zale's wound. The broken-off end of the spear remained firmly lodged in his side.
"I suppose," he grumbled. "Can't get as much fame off a sea freak if people find out we killed it."
At the word killed, Zale let out a scared little whimper. Brimmer's eyebrows rose.
"I think it can understand you, Hall."
Halloway shrugged. "You really think?"
Yeah," said Brimmer, nodding. "Not like a human, 'course. But like how pets know sort of what you mean by the tone of your voice."
"Makes sense," said Halloway. "But this thing's more primitive than a dog or a cat."
"You don't know that," came Douglas' voice.
The other men in Zale's field of vision rolled their eyes. "Alright, all of you get the fuck out of here," Brimmer commanded. "Me and Halls here are gonna get this thing patched up. Soon as we know it'll make it, then you loose-lipped idiots can go around telling the world." He waited as the men tramped out of the room, talking amongst themselves, and then he left Zale's vision to shut the door.
"Alright, Halls, how're we doing this?"
Hall squinted at Zale with an expression devoid of any compassion or recognition that Zale was staring back at him. "Hmm. Guess the fish bleeds like us, so we'll have to be ready with compression bandages and --"
"Don't talk medical to me, just tell me what I should do," Brimmer said impatiently.
As the men bickered and bantered over him, Zale quietly reached his bound hands to his back. As well as he could, he pinched himself.
Nothing changed.
Zale began to weep openly now, but the men didn't notice...or maybe they just didn't care. He whimpered again, trembling on the table.
"You can gag it, Brimmer. Don't want the men getting curious and barging in here if it screams."
"On it," Brimmer said with a sadistic grin. He disappeared from view for a moment before coming back with a wad of cloth and a roll of tape. "Looks like the thing is dry enough for this to work on now."
He grabbd Zale's jaw and shoved the cloth in, ignoring the mer's protests, and wound tape to seal it. The adhesive prickled at Zale's skin and made him start to writhe, which Brimmer quickly put a stop to with a sharp slap.
The resulting muffled whine of pain from the captured mer made him nod in satisfaction. "Yep, that's a good gag. And now that thing can't bite us, either."
"Ready to hold it down?" Halloway asked, moving to the side of the spear part.
Zale had a moment more of hazy, drifting pain before the doctor yanked at the spear.
The mer had never felt so much pain in his entire life. His fingers and claws clutched at the table's sides as he writhed and bucked, hips arching in protest while Brimmer held his shoulders down, and he screamed until his throat went hoarse and his tongue went dry against the gag, jaw aching. Halloway tugged again.
White-hot pain seared across Zale's brain and left him gasping for air. His gills fluttered uselessly in a vain attempt to help.
I can feel pain like you can! I can hear you! I'm just like you!! He wanted to shout, but even if he hadn't been gagged -- even if he could speak easily -- all that he could do was scream in agony as the humans performed emergency surgery on their restrained, ignored, helpless catch.
Another tug -- a stinging type of agony joining the sharp one -- and Zale's eyes rolled into the back of his skull and his body went limp.
He lay on the table surrounded by medical equipment and harsh light and his own blood. But Zale knew none of it. He was too far gone, knocked out by pain and fear, to even try bringing himself back to consciousness.
....
*I don't think this is how oil rigs work but *whips out creative license* I think this will do the trick
Note: everyone knows that you shouldn't remove an impaled object from the body unless you're a medical expert and know how to control the bleeding/prevent infection/etc immediately after. Don't ask me how to do all that, I'm not a doctor. I asked google and all of the first-page websites just said to keep the object in and call emergency services.
That's not very helpful to our whumpees, now, is it? I am too lazy to search for more answers, but I found a very nice article from The Art of Manliness that touched on the subject despite directing me to emergency services. TL;DR: be prepared for a lot of blood and a lot of issues with airways depending on what area of the body has been impaled. Makes sense.

What if there was some sort of handcuff/restraint that can be clamped around the end of Merman! Jericho's tail next to the fin, that prevents him from switching his tail into legs (since he has to separate his tail into two to form legs and the cuff prevents just that). His captors somehow lose the key and don't bother looking for it because "hey, it makes him easier to handle!"

I really want a captured mer whumpee story with an android caretaker. Maybe it's the scientist's helper android that was designed to do the experiments and take care of mer whumpee. Maybe the android bonds with them instead and tries to help them escape but can't follow mer whumpee back into the ocean or they'll shortcircuit.
