✺ Pisces Mars are experts at ghosting. You guys take action in such an elusive way because you hate confrontation, or just unnecessary drama. If y’all are annoyed or feeling a way about something you don’t say anything right away and you only react when things boil over into the point where you can’t control it anymore and you explode. Then you immediately bad for getting so angry. Just work on communicating how you feel, when you feel it, sometimes other people won’t know how you feel until you express it.

✺ Mars in the 1st house synastry isn’t always as sexy and hot as people think it is. The mars person’s attraction could be so strong for the house that they come off too strong which can completely turn off the house person. (If there isn’t any other compatible synastry)

✺ The sign in your second house is usually the sign, or ones with those placements, that you feel the most possessive over.

✺ Also, the second house can explain your appetite and how you like to eat. For example, Sag risings having Capricorn in the 2nd house prefer home cooked meals over fast food. They are very strict as to what they put in their body and they won't eat just anybody's food.

There are no pages of exposition, but instead a sense of time and place is weaved into the characters and their attitudes. The alternative history is done to perfection. He matures and becomes a better man, but he will never be fully good. The one thread through all this is Brooklyn. It does not become bogged down in once place too long. Mercury is not a book that is afraid to move on with the story. I like this as the reader gets a chance to visit so much of Greene’s imagination from New York life to a genuine feeling training camp, moon work and a mysterious location deep underground. There are gaps in Brooklyn’s life that pushes the action faster and gives the book a feel of several vignettes, rather than one continuous whole. The book is written in parts and spans several decades. He is not a hero, but the adventure in Mercury gives him little choice. Brooklyn will look for the easy path in life, be that in crime or getting a job in the military with the lowest element of risk. These are both present in the book, but there is also an edge. The setting of America during the Cold War makes you think of ray guns and B Movies. There is a boy’s own feel to the story in places. The same goes for alternative history, but Greene writes a wonderful slice of pulp sci fi and you never feel drowned out by the differences this alternative world has to our own. Writing pulp fiction seems simple, but to do it well is not. Mercury is a joy of a book to read as it does so many things effortlessly. Brooklyn’s decision will change his life forever and may just pave the way to saving the planet. In this mid-20th century America, the world is at war with the enigmatic creatures of Mercury. His choice is to go to prison or take a ride to the moon. It all goes very wrong when someone dies, and Brooklyn’s prints are all over the crime scene. One well paid job seems simple, find some tapes, and deliver them. Not that ordinary as he would rather deal in the shadier sides of the city than get a job. People like Brooklyn, a man who faces decades in jail or ten years in space.īrooklyn is an ordinary bloke from New York. Anyone willing to spend ten years in space and have their bones turn brittle. In R W W Greene’s Mercury Rising Earth is at war and we need soldiers. Even with more and more people going into space, it is still the relative few. Maybe, just maybe, you are a celeb or competition winner who won the chance to take a flight, the only downside being you must sit next to the said geek done good. Maybe you are a geek done good and decided to spend your billions on the vanity project of commercial space travel.

The Mercury, in marked contrast, was founded by Ivy League journalism graduates looking not to reject or even replace the mainstream media, but to fearlessly augment it with a “more adventuresome kind of writing, real in-depth, investigative reporting,” according to co-founder Epps, now the legal affairs editor at The Washington Monthly.Įpps explains that their publishing models were the Boston Phoenix and the Cambridge-based, The Real Paper, two wildly successful alternative weeklies. The two differed in that the Chronicle, with its volunteer army of offbeat amateur writers and artists, espoused the underground ethos through rejection of the establishment. The Mercury initially suffered an image problem as Richmonders perceived it as just another ‘underground’ paper when it arrived less than a year after the folding of the more radical Richmond Chronicle, which was published from 1969 to 1971. Richmond in the early 1970s – like the rest of America – still faces a struggle for social and economic justice … The split between the races needs to be healed and Richmond’s large black population must be given the opportunities in education, business and society that have been denied to them for so long.” In an early issue, a letter from the editors noted: “After our collegiate years, we were left with a shared belief that Richmond was a good place to live and the common hope that we might keep it that way, perhaps make it a little better. “We had a great town to work in, with larger-than-life personalities and a facade of gentility and political etiquette covering an underworld of cut-throat, back-room politics and race hatred.” “We had strong goals, a clear target, and a wonderful antagonist in the complacent Richmond dailies,” recalled Glenn Frankel, who worked as a writer from 1973-1975, and would later win a Pulitzer for international reporting with The Washington Post. So in September of that year, Garrett Epps, Frank Rich, Rob Buford IV, Lynn Darling, Charles Hite, Harry Stein, photographer Joyce Heard, production manager Peter Galassi, and staff artist Bill Nelson partnered with publisher Edmund Rennolds III to launch the weekly tabloid, The Richmond Mercury, as a counterpoint to the two assertive daily papers. In 1972, the radically conservative Richmond Times-Dispatch, the Richmond News Leader, and the virulent segregationist reputation they had championed on their editorial pages dominated Central Virginia’s print media landscape.Īware of this dominance, a group of Harvard and University of Virginia-educated Richmond natives became convinced the city could benefit from another voice.
