“No. Way.”

Emerald stops in her tracks, glances at Cinder. The brunette is grinning like a cat who got the cream, her fiery eyes narrowed.

“What?” Emerald asks in low exasperation. She is already running late, already annoyed at herself for delaying the takeoff time that Hazel would surely give her grief for. 

Cinder takes two careful steps forward, brushing Emerald's hair from her neck, and practically preens.

“He left a fucking hickey?” Cinder snickers, dropping Emeralds hair and taking a step back, bending over with a laugh. Emerald's eyes widen, and her cheeks go scarlet as she raises a hand to where Cinder has gestured.

“I- no, I must've burned myself this morning.'' She tries weakly but she knows it's futile. Cinder laughs again, shaking her head, her dark hair moving around her shoulders like a fan.

“Now the real question is, which one?” Cinder says, leaning on one leg as she taps her chin thoughtfully. “Hazel? Or, Mercury perhaps? Oh my god, Tyrian?”

Emerald gawks in disgust at the thought of Tyrian anywhere close to her body, and grinds her jaw. “It’s not what you think.”

Cinder laughs again, a thin, humorless sound, and rolls her eyes. “Sure it isn't.” she sighs, and turns on her heels. “Tell loverboy I said he’s sloppy.”

Emerald blushes furiously as she makes it to the helipad. Boarding the aircraft, she narrows her eyes at Hazel and Mercury as they lean over the map of Remnant, and when Hazel moves to the back of the ship, Emerald stands. She takes two long strides before she’s next to Mercury, her hands balled into fists. He grins, opens his mouth to speak but is stunned silent when she gives him a hard punch in the shoulder.

“The hell?” he scoffs, rotating his arm in confusion. Emerald jabs a finger at her neck, and when Mercury's eyes follow her pointing digit, he pales every so slightly.

“Good job, loverboy,” Emerald sneers in a hushed tone, her hands on her hips. “Cinder knows.”

Pinching the bridge of his nose, Mercury groans.

given how directly salient RH was to neo’s arc in v9, i expect the same to hold true for the CFVY novels in regard to the vacuo arc, and i think making that backstory more accessible to general/casual audiences is one of the core purposes of rwby beyond—giving cliff notes in a brief animated short is a lot less of a barrier than asking viewers to read two entire novels, even if the novels in question are quite short. a succinct recap of what went down with the crown’s insurgency prior to the broadcast and arrival of refugees from atlas + character-focused shorts giving some sense of what’s been going on with the vacuo coalition in the aftermath so that v10 can hit the ground running seems the most likely. a sort of after-credits “where are they now” for v8 but with the intention of setting the stage for v10 as opposed to tying off loose ends.

i anticipate it’ll be in a similar vein to the epilogue animatic—like a more narrative-driven world of remnant-esque series where it’s in-character exposition over a sort of slide show. (what i would ideally really like is if we got the same basic story told in a different ways by different characters, rashomon style, as a way of elaborating on the story’s themes about storytelling and the nature of truth.)

i am not holding my breath for anything to do with salem or cinder or summer, but i would be over the moon to get even the tiniest crumb of what’s happening over there given that they are Clearly Not in vacuo.

given the description of “untold stories happening in remnant during v9 and even beyond” i am wondering if the series will like, end around where the storyboard epilogue does—ie with the reunion after rwbyj return—again for the purpose of easing the narrative burden at the top of v9. i could even see it going as far as settling rwbyj into the New Normal in vacuo (as in, establishing up to the equivalent of where they’re at in rwby x jl pt 2), although that depends on how important the Explanations are narratively (the more important they are, the less likely they’ll be in rwby beyond bc you want to reserve critical scenes for the show proper)

the other possibility is that “and even beyond” means in the past, in which case we might get some “missing scene”-esque shorts set during previous volumes. which i think would be pretty neat.

i would love it if we got a spot or two focused on civilians rather than the main cast—for many reasons, vacuo is the ideal point in the narrative to start breaking down the hard boundaries between huntsmen and civilians and the CFVY novels focus quite a lot on non-huntsmen experiences, so i’m pretty optimistic that this will happen generally but i’d be stoked to directly get a glimpse through the eyes of an ordinary vacuan citizen or mantelian refugee with no connection to the plot whatsoever, and the relative low-stakes of an ancillary “untold (short) stories” series is the perfect place for that. fingers crossed.

in addition to the CFVY novels recap, i’m placing my bets on a short centered on qrow, oscar+ozma, ren, nora, emerald, winter and/or the schnees, robyn and the other happy huntresses, pietro+maria and whoever else is involved with converting amity into a battleship, arrival of aid from vale and mistral, glynda, (possibly) mercury+tyrian, and raven. plus tai if he’s left his cabin. that’s assuming like WOR-length shorts; if they’re longer then these can and probably will be combined more efficiently. but broadly speaking those are the important narrative gaps to fill in.

Which members of the RWBY cast would each member of the Slaughterhouse 9 try to recruit for their "Try-Outs" the way they did in Brockton Bay?

Hatchet-Face: Honestly, this one's a complete write-off. He died and was turned into Hatchet-Job offscreen so he never got a chance to choose a replacement because he was the one being replaced. Null and Void....But if I had to say anyone, probably Tyrian for matching serial killer vibes and Power/Aura nullification.

Mannequin: By far the easiest one to figure out; he'd pick Ironwood for the same reason he picked Armsmaster in canon.

Crawler: The important thing to remember about Crawler's selections is that he's not really looking for someone to join; he's looking for someone who's gonna be able to put up enough of a fight against him to help him evolve himself further. With that in mind there's only one natural answer and Crawler is actually crazy enough to try it: He'd pick Salem, just to see if he can outlast her.

Bonesaw: Riley's an artist first and foremost....I can imagine her pouting when Crawler picks Salem first because she wanted to pick the lady who makes her own monsters. After that I think her second choice, considering that the Nine do enjoy putting heroes through their try-outs.....Would be Pietro; because she can make zombies, but he amputated part of his soul and made a whole new soul out of it.

Burnscar: Burnscar forewent her chance to nominate someone in order to talk to Labyrinth who she was in the asylum with.....That does give me something to work with. If Burnscar's gonna pick someone, either to nominate or to effectively veto other from nominating it's gonna be someone she feels a connection to or an affinity with and there is a certain fire-breathing orphan with a lot of issues in Remnant isn't there.....I think Burnscar would pick Cinder, if only to stop another member from doing it.

Shatterbird: I feel like Shatterbird would originally be interested in Cinder, glass weapons and a single-minded drive and she's capable; which is what Shatterbird seems to look for, she picked Hookwolf because he's a fighter. Failing that and given that Tyrian being picked by Hatchet-Man is basically a placeholder, I think Shatterbird would kill Tyrian and use that to bring Mercury in.

Siberian: Manton likes outcasts and people who remind him of his daughter....I toyed with the idea of Penny, just because "She came back from the dead" might give Siberian some hope but instead I settled on Nora....Because I kinda see Ren and Nora & Emerald and Mercury as being two sides of the same coin in some ways and having one half of each pair be targeted by the Nine opens up some fun ideas.

Cherish: Okay so Cherish wanted Alec specifically because it was Alec....But, I think she'd go for Whitley. The Schnee family is a mess, there's parallels to be drawn between their family Semblance and the fact that all of Heartbreaker's kids' powers have a theme; so Cherish would go for the Schnee who reminds her the most of Alec, who just so happens to be the one least equipped to defend himself and was also his Daddies' favourite.

Jack Slash: Ruby.....Okay, this sounds like a cop-out because protag Vs villain leader match-up but hear me out. Jack gave up his nomination to make his deal with Golem but before that he went to Oni-Lee first, didn't like what he saw and then went after Purity....He wants powerful people and after moulding Bonesaw into what he wanted her to be I think he'd see Ruby, someone who would be incredibly useful to him on Remnant as a new pet project.

Call me a hater or say that I'm killing the fun of it or something, but one of my most subjective most petty complaints when it comes to RWBY is that I honestly hate like 90% of the ship names. XD There are only a few that I can think of that I like, and most of the shipping names I like are things like 'Ironqrow,' 'Arkos,' 'Ozwitch,' 'Renora,' the regular everyday shipping names you could actually look up and get the content for without having to scroll through pictures of ladybugs. The other ones that I don't like but at least seem kind of quirky or cutesy are things like 'Nuts and Dolts' and 'Crime Dads' (I may hate Junior, but 'Crime Dads' is very similar in vibes to 'Science Bros' or 'Ineffable Husbands' or other regularly accepted fandom nicknames.

I don't like the bees very much either, but I actually don't mind the shipping name of 'Bumbleby' because it has a quirky spelling to make it something that can be looked up and also makes sense to make that the ship name because people originally started shipping the main four with each other back before they had names and just went by the color associated with them. I'd like Monochrome, WhiteRose, Ladybug, and Freezerburn a bit more too if they had quirky quirk spellings that made them able to be actually found, but here we are.

However, the other shipping names? Martial Arcs? Caffeine Killers? Evil Moustache? Burnt Metal?

Also, then you get things like mix ups where some people have been calling the ship between Whitley and Penny "cold hard cash" and others have been calling it "broken machines" I think for some reason? I don't remember for sure and I literally like the ship, but I would much rather just call them... Pentley, or PenWhit or something. Also also don't even get me started on how many ship names are associated with color but with the amount of people in Ruby who have the same color.... Like 'Crimson' is used for part of the ship title, but 'Crimson' is used for Ruby, Cinder, Pyrrha, Scarlet, Adam and who knows who else, so if someone tells me "I ship Crimson Wings" I'm not gonna think "ah yes, the ship between Cardin and Cinder," I'm gonna think "Is that like... Adam and Qrow? Is that Ruby and that one bat Faunus? Is that Scarlet and Weiss? Is that Raven and Vernal somehow?" It's so unnecessarily complicated.

Also the naming conventions of going by like... Traits that it feels weird to pick? It just gives me a not great feeling. Why does Neo being mute feature in her shipping names? Why is Blake's number one thing just 'Cat?' Why are so many of Qrow's shipping names like 'lol Qrow is a drunkard?' Why is the name for Mercury and Weiss's ship 'Daddy Issues" as if the only thing about their characters that's important is the fact that they were both abused by their fathers?

Anyway, this is a mostly harmless fandom quirk, and I just don't really like it. So... rant over lol. Please nobody think you have to change what you call your ships for my sake, but I might just stop trying to learn any real shipping names and just go with putting names together. The ship between Neon Katt and Ruby might be called like, Rainbow Eyes or Crimson Cat or CapeSkates or something, but I'm just gonna say 'Neon x Ruby.'

Salem:

Tyrian had found you and brought you to his majesty, salem. You were a little thing, all alone s she decided to take you in as you reminded her of her daughters when they were as small as you are now.

If salem was busy to keep you with her then you were babysat by hazel, and on some occasions watts, but mostly hazel and if both were busy then emerald would babysit you to the dismay of mercury.

She teaches that grim are the good guys while her ex husband is the bad guy, plus she created a little playmate for you to keep you busy yourself and distract you on when she need to do her duties as queen of grim.

Though one time you did meet ozpin by accident from mercury as he lost you when he somehow was put in charge of babysitting you as the others that are usually the one to take care of you was busy and Tyrian was a definite no from salem so you went to mercury albeit hesitant on Salem’s part as he’s sort of a brat.

(Sorry if you like mercury.)

Anyway, ozpin was surprised to see a baby bat Faunus on a bench with no parent or guardian anywhere, after hew brought you with him until he contacted the police you disappeared via with the help of one of salems many grims, good thing she had watts put a tracker on you beforehand or else mercury b in even more trouble than he already was in fact he would’ve been dead if you haven’t taken a shine to him for some reason.

You unlocked your semblance which was (s/n) (semblance/name) and some created chaos that was unintentional to happen, most of the unfortunate events fall on mercury funny enough which she and the others get a laugh about and now they all hold it over his head as he is forced to hold you or he gets punished for not holding you like you had requested from him by salem.

She would find a way to keep you to her, either by killing you both after she gets rid of the immortality curse or make you immortal as well, it doesn’t matter, as long as you stay with her then she was fine with anything, not even ozpin can fight against her on this.

Glynda:

Glynda had found you in a box like shelter and after having no luck on finding the parents or guardian of you she decided to adopt you.

She made a small spot in her classroom so she can watch you while she works on teaching the kids on grim and other things. The kids all loved you, they make sure Cardin stays away from you and if he doesn’t then they’ll get Glynda and she give him one hell of a punishment for even thinking of messing with her child.

You’ve met her colleagues, oobleck, port, and the principal ozpin. Ozpin is the godfather, oobleck is the crazy uncle and port is the grandfather that can make you fall asleep by just saying one word.

They all take turns babysitting you though it’s mostly ozpin as oobleck will go overboard and port will go on with his stories and forget about you entirely, sometime even ironwood and qrow would babysit you when they visit, not for long though as ironwood is a very busy man and qrow doesn’t want his bad luck to rub off on you.

Qrow is your favorite along with ozpi even if qrow don’t show up as much as you liked him to. One time you made both of them kissed by ‘accident’ when in reality you did it on purpose even with your baby mind not fully maturing yet.

Sometimes when all teachers are busy along with qrow and ironwood, team rwby and team jnpr would babysit you and get extra credit by Glynda but they mostly did it so they could get to see you and spend time with you.

She wil make sure to keep you safe from the grim and all the other things that come with it.

Neo:

Neo was given to you by one of the thugs of roman after she spotted you in the corner of her eye.

Roman became the grandfather after that, he openly complains how he’s too young to be a grandpa but secretly likes it especially cause it means he gets to help raise sweet little you with your new mother, neo.

Neo doesn’t care that if you’re biological parents are around, alive, or dead, better dead than alive cause if they were then they would i she’d they were dead before she and Roman got their hands on them.

She shares her ice cream with you once you’re old enough to eat it.

You are spoiled by Roman and neo as they want you to have a good life with the support of them, all you have to do in return is stay with them so they can keep you safe from all the terrible people and grim.

She will make sure that you stay with her and don’t wander off when you two go out in public, sometimes Roman either joins or take you with him when he’s by himself though he can’t stay for long with how the fuzz is on his tail

Neo makes sure he doesn’t smoke around you as she doesn’t want you getting sick, neither does Roman so he makes sure to remind himself to not smoke in your presence as he knows that abides shouldn’t be around to get second hand smoking plus with how your enhanced smell is with you being a Faunus might make second hand smoking even more harmful to yo.

Jaune:

He had found you when he and the rest of team jnpr, aka Nora, prryha, and ren was out to spend time together and was advise by Pyrrha and ren to show ozpin and asked if they should bring you to the authorities or if they need todo something else.

Ozpin shocking enough had said that he can adopt you and take care of you if they aren’t able to find your parents, which endeded up being what happened as they never found any signs of your parents which made them think of the worst.

Jaune takes up being the father to you while ren is sort of the mom as he kinda take care of the group with Pyrrha, speaking of Pyrrha she is the godmother and aunt, Nora is also a aunt as well.

(I ship jaune x ren, i hope you can respect my opinion and not post hate comments as you can either ignore it or leave, thank you.)

For babysitters it’s usually team rwby as jaune doesn’t have anybody else at beacon to take care of you though Glynda and ozpin do babysit you when team jnpr and team rwby can’t take care of you because of missions that are handed to them as there is no on else that team jnpr trusts or are friends with that stay at beacon and they don’t want to give you to professor oobleck or port.

You had called ren ‘mama!’ Which shocked all but Nora who laughed her but off at ren getting called mom by a baby and started making jokes along with telling team rwby what had happaened.

Jaune shows and introduce you to her sister and wife along with their child who immediately took a shine to you through the scroll (phone).

He’ll make sure that he and his friends will make this a safe place to live without the fear of any bad guys or grim just stay near him and you’ll be safe, okay?
