Playing a Meren of Clan Nel Toth Commander deck with her in play and at least 4 counters. Can I Mutate Gemrazer out of the graveyard onto a creature I have in play? I’m guessing no, but I am curious if running Mutate cards in this type of deck would actually work.
Tumblr media
No, this doesn't work.
Meren's ability returns the creature card to the battlefield rather than casting it, and mutate only works via casting for the mutate cost. (Even she did have you cast it for free, you wouldn't be able to mutate with it because mutate is an alternate cost and you'd already be casting it without paying its mana cost, which is also an alternate cost and you can't pay two different alternate costs for the same spell.)
What you can do is just return the card to your hand and then cast it for its mutate cost. You just still have to pay mana, which is worse than free but better than being forced to put it into play as its own body, I guess?

Meren of Clan Nel Toth is a favourite MTG character of mine, entirely down to the marvellous, bleak story she was introduced with - All the Cairns of Jund by Michael Yichao.
First picture (the original incarnation of Meren) is by Mark Winters.
The third is by Lis Furlanetti.

Meren or Gitrog
I'm at a crossroads here: Currently I have a Gitrog Monster deck that runs pretty efficiently, but I sorta miss the reanimator style of play that Meren provides. I'm looking over the cards that I would want in Meren, and I'm realizing that the curve is incredibly skewed to the two, three, and five mana slots. I wanted to include Birthing Pod, but as it stands the creature curve wouldn't work very well with it. The other issue I have with Meren is that she has a ceiling for the effectiveness for experience counters, unlike commanders like Mizzix or Ezuri. With them, you could get a bunch of experience and put more mana into x spells or more +1/+1 on your creatures respectively. With Meren, the highest mana costed creature is how many experience counters you'll ever need in a game, and any extra counters aren't necessary. What do you guys think of Meren? Do any of you still have her built as a commander? Here's my current Golgari list for you to take a look at: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/git-frogged-3/
