MERMAY 2024 MAIN CAST- look at my stupid, idiot little children, I love them so much. If I can keep up, this year is gonna be fun; I have angsty plots >:3
Relative size reference and anatomical ramblings below cut.
Here’s a vague size comparison thing for all of them. And a human for perspective

I really, desperately want to make an illustrated guide to my merfolk lore, because it’s extensive and I’m really proud of it. But that sounds slightly overwhelming, so idk, but here are some random scraps that pertain to these four. My fish mers aren’t allowed to have hair; they have a variety of different fins on their head to mimic it instead. Oviparous fish (e.g. remora) lay their eggs and their mer counterparts do likewise, and therefore don’t have nipples and/or breasts. Eggs of ovoviviparous fish (e.g. manta ray) hatch shortly before giving birth and do not consume anything resembling milk, so their mer counterparts do not have nipples and/or breasts. Viviparous fish (e.g. lemon shark) essentially nurse when in the womb, so their mer counterparts nurse after having given birth and have nipples and/or breasts. Mammals (e.g. monk seal) are self explanatory.
Also most animals hatch or are born with navels, because even in eggs, there’s a cord from the embryo to the yolk sack. Oviparous and ovoviviparous creatures just tend to be better at healing the scar. However, I’ve decided that mers are not as good at healing the scar, and thus, have bellybuttons.
Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

(I recommend clicking on "keep reading" below, to see the full glittery goodness of this painting unfold. ;3) It's May - and for many artists this means it's the time to draw lots and lots of merfolk for Mermay. And although I'm not actively participating this year I think it’s a great opportunity to show you a merman I painted recently. My idea behind this was to leave it ambiguous whether this handsome fellow has malicious intentions, or if its just a harmless invitation to follow him. How about you, would you grasp his hand and risk being lured into the depths of the ocean? ^_^

Morgana, she lives in a underwater cave in a deep lake. She’s isolated from other merfolk due to her home, though it must be connected to the ocean somehow. Her cave is a popular, but dangerous diving spot for humans. However, she resides so deep that the only human interaction she gets is from the dead. Those that could not find their way out of the confusing caverns, or accidentally went too deep and ran out of air.

I drew this as a belated Mother’s Day gift, but it’s also for MerMay month because mermaid.
Here is Atargatis, or at least my depiction of her in a really old story of mine. According to the internet, she is the following:
Atargatis is said to be the mermaid who was the original inspiration for all mermaid stories. She was an Assyrian Goddess. She was said to be the goddess of the moon, fertility and water and was worshipped 3000-4000 years ago in ancient Assyria and later all over the Mediterranean.
I gave her a different body type compared to most characters I’ve designed in the past. Hers is curvier and thicker, which is appropriate to her mother goddess status.
This was finished in two days, starting from 5 PM to 8 AM. I was pretty exhausted by the time I was done. I’m glad I managed to make it in time for MerMay and caught up to Mother’s Day even though it was belated. I had fun designing her tail. Someday I’ll make a full body rendition of her with her tail in complete display.

This is a drawing I did for a potential MerMay workshop ad, so the girl isn’t really a character in know much about. She doesn’t have a name or backstory or anything, but she’s based off a pygmy seahorse. In doing research to make this, I learned that male seahorses actually have heightened levels of prolactin (the hormone used to regulate lactation in female mammals) while they’re pregnant, which is honestly even weirder and more fascinating than the males being the brooding vessel in and of itself. Animals are cool and very interesting.
Anyway, that development resulted in the conclusion that female seahorse mers do not have breasts, but I’m still debating whether males would instead? By all preset rules for my merfolk thus far, they should, so probably? But yeah. Weird little guys.
