Title: I Have A Secret Too
Summary: Y/N loves to be around her friend Merlin, he’s such a lovely boy. However, when she discovers his secret, she feels like confessing hers.
A wide smile grew on my face as I saw him
walking into the kitchen. Always in a good mood, he was showing a bright and
“Lovely morning, isn’t it, Y/N?” Merlin
“It is indeed, Merlin”
“Is Arthur’s breakfast ready?” He asked me as
he looked over his shoulder to Audrey, the main cook.
“Yes, I made it myself” I used my apron to
clean my hands and handed him the plate filled with food.
“Thank you, my lady” Merlin cheerfuly said, grabbing the plate
and flashing me another smile as he started to walk away.
I saw him quietly picking up a few dumplings in
his way out, and I chuckled.
“What was he doing here?” Audrey asked me,
her hands on her hips in annoyance.
“He just came to get the prince’s breakfast”
I shrugged, but she stared at me in suspicion.
“If I find out you let him get more of my
I shook my head, letting her know I would
never do that, and so she left.
I turned around with a mischievous smile.
Of course I let Merlin grab a few. After all,
it was seeing him every day what made it all easier.
With every meal the prince had, Merlin came
to the kitchen and asked me for the food after I made it. And I gladly held it to him.
He had been working for prince Arthur for a long
time. But I arrived in Camelot just a year ago, and he was the nicest of all
Merlin and I had developed a strong
friendship and often met each other away from the castle to get our minds off
the work. It could be very tiring at times.
“Get back to work, Y/N!” Audrey ordered me. “We
have much to do!”
I huffed and wiped the sweat from my forehead
with the back of my hand, ready to get back to it and face the rest of the
Once supper was ready, I was free to leave
the castle. Immediately, I knew where to go before I walked home.
The forest. Such a peaceful place, and it
made me forget about everything. The stress of working in that big castle, for
the prince Arthur no less. It was nice to enjoy the beauty of the nature and
focus only in that.
I took a deep breath and closed my eyes as I
lied in the grass, feeling all worries disappear.
My thoughts wandered to Arthur’s clumsy servant Merlin. I stirred in excitement as I realized I would see him again the
next day. I admired him, his loyalty, kind heart and hard work. And I felt
something for him, not that I would ever tell him.
I pictured his lovely face and closed my eyes
for a moment. Everytime I thought about his smile it made me want to smile too.
And everytime I looked into his eyes, I had the feeling like there was more to
him than just what I saw. But I’ve always been a dreamer, so it was probably
just my imagination.
I sighed as I opened my eyelids again, and I
saw a cloud of smoke in the dark, floating through the sky. Inside the haze, orange and reddish sparkles shone and created different shapes.
Curious, I stood up and sought the source of
The smoke grew thicker as I approached, and I
found a figure sitting in a rock that emerged from the floor. But there were not any fires to be seen.
I leaned out in the tree that served as a hiding place and carefully studied the figure and observed
what he –it looked like a male, but I couldn’t see his face in the darkness of the nigt –was
In the shadows that surrounded his face, I saw his eyes suddenly shining with a bright golden
tone and something appeared in his outstretched hand as I heard him whispering
something. A little flame.
Astonished, I squealed at that sight.
The man looked up from his creation, from his
magic, and his eyes fell upon me.
“Merlin?” I mumbled as I recognized him once his features were visible in the little light that the flame threw upon him.
“Y/N…” Indeed it was Merlin.
When he realized what was happening, his
glance changed from his own hand to me. He knew I had seen his magic.
I knew he must have been feeling uneasy, but
no words came to my mind to make him feel at ease.
“Y/N, it’s not…” Merlin gawked, the concern
visible in his eyes.
I tried to make him feel better by showing
him a soft smile.
“You have magic” It didn’t really surprise me
that he did, I always knew he was trully special somehow.
“I… No, I just… it’s…” He stuttered,
“No, don’t worry, it’s alright!” I went to join him in the
rock. “I won’t tell anyone, I promise”
“Really?” He finally smiled, his blue eyes
shining with a twinkle of excitement.
He wrapped me in a rapid and warm embrace to
show me his gratitude.
“Thank you, thank you so much”
He sighed heavily, as if someone had taken a
great burden off him.
“It must have been really hard to keep that
secret” I placed a comforting hand on his arm as he looked at me and nodded.
Knowing Uther’s hate towards the magic, and
the fact that he was the king and that Merlin worked as the prince’s personal
manservant… It sure was a heavy weight on his shoulders.
“Does anyone else know?”
“Only Gaius, and very little more” Merlin
seemed sad, and I hated to see him like that. Magic should be a gift, not a
“Are you going to tell Arthur about it?”
“I can’t!” He exclaimed, horrified just of
the idea. “He’s the prince, and magic is forbidden in Camelot”
“I know…” I muttered, rubbing his arm in a friendly way as a proof of support. “But he’s very fond of you, he would protect you”
Merlin stared at me, not believing my words.
Did he not see how much Arthur cared for him?
“No, he wouldn’t…” I was sure it saddened him
to have to keep that secret from his lord. To have to pretend he was a fool so
he wouldn’t know his manservant was what the king would call dangerous.
But Arthur was not like Uther. Although I
understood why Merlin didn’t want to take the risk.
“Everybody hides something. Everyone has
secrets” I sighed, looking away, and my voice grew lower and lower until it
became a whisper. “In fact, I have a secret too”
“What was that?”
“It doesn’t matter…” I stood up and sadly
I left him sitting there, looking at him one last
time. He kept using his magic, feeling safe in that lonely forest at
night. A small smile found its way to my lips as I observed him, but I believed
it was better if things stayed like always. At least for now.
When dawn came, I resumed my duties in the kitchen
like any other day. Audrey scolded me because she discovered I lied to her and was giving
Merlin food behind her back. But seeing that happy twinkle in his eyes was worth the
As a result, Audrey told me to get Arthur’s
breakfast to his chambers myself. I rolled my eyes at her, but did as I was
I gathered everything and put it in a tray to
take it to the prince.
As I exited the kitchen, I saw dozens of servants
pacing up and down trying to do their duties as well. It was an important day on
Camelot, a big meal was being prepared. A prince coming from other kingdom was
to meet Uther and Arthur.
As I took the food to the prince’s chambers,
I crashed into another servant, the tray flying from my hands. I lost balance
and was unable to stay on my feet.
But suddenly someone’s arm supported me and
grabbed the food before it fell to the floor.
“Are you alright?” That was Merlin’s sweet
“How did you…?” I knew he wasn’t fast enough
to stop both me and the tray from falling.
As a response he just glanced at me, speaking with his
eyes. And I understood when I remembered what I discovered last night.
But I kept staring at his piercing blue eyes,
so I cleared my throat and straightened my apron in embarrassment.
“You know my secret…” He whispered, ignoring
the servants that pushed through us in the crowded hallway. “Can I know yours?”
For a moment, I was in awe. If Merlin hadn’t held my arm, one of the many servants would have knocked me to the floor.
“Beg your pardon?” I finally asked him.
“I heard you… You have a secret too…”
I placed the tray in a nearby table and thought about
the situation. Should I tell him?
His expression changed to one of such sweetness and kindness. And I could sense in it he
would accept it. I wasn’t feeling afraid of rejection. I felt calm, so I showed
him my secret.
I slowly got ahold of his hand, the touch of
his soft and warm fingers interwined with mine sending a tingling feeling in
the mouth of my stomach.
Merlin visibly blushed, and that made me
No words were needed, we were absorbed
by the moment we shared. We didn’t really notice the servants rushing around us
The both of us slowly leaned in as in command,
and I closed my eyes as I felt my lips sweetly colliding with his in an extremely
“Merlin…” We heard a faint voice calling him from the distance,
making us pull apart.
I stared at Merlin, waiting for his response.
“You should hear him when he’s really angry”
Merlin didn’t really seem worried about it, so I thought I shouldn’t be
The corner of my lips curved up as I tightened
the grip in his hand and as he placed his other hand in my cheek.
We had just touched lips again when the same
noise interrupted us again.
“Merlin!!” Arthur’s unmistakable voice echoed
through the corridors of the castle. Very angrily.
“Like… now” The young man grinned and glared at me for a
moment. I smiled too, finding the situation very comical.
Merlin caressed my cheek with his long fingers
before he picked up the tray and ran towards Arthur. I didn’t have to ask to know I’d meet him later.
As I stood there, I was surprised to
realize that I wasn’t worried. I knew his secret, I knew his true self. And I accepted it. So
did he. Now he knew my secret. And not only had he accepted it. Merlin reciprocated.
