I’m a Scorpio sun-rising and Aries moon, but I look like a fish. ( literally, I’ve been told I look like a pretty goldfish) I wanna know what’s the correlation ?? Is it the Pisces moon in Vedic astrology?

Review of The Search for Delicious

Some things one appreciates more with age. I tried reading The Search for Delicious in the third grade. I only read a couple chapters before decided I didn't like it and returned it. There was a mermaid on the cover, so I was disappointed when I found out the mermaid wasn’t the main character. The main character was a human 12-year-old boy. I also found the conflict absurd. Why would adults fight over something as trivial as what food tasted the best? I was naive then; the book definitely went way over my head. Twelve years later, I read the whole thing, and I couldn't believe I missed out on such a great book.

The Search for Delicious is a 1969 children's fantasy book written by Natalie Babbit, an author better known as the writer for Tuck Everlasting. It takes place in a magical, medieval kingdom. The prime minister for the king is writing a dictionary. He tells the king his definition for the word delicious, but the king disagrees. The king, the queen, her brother, and the other castle residents offer him their own definitions for delicious. They can't decide what the most delicious thing is, so the king sends his messenger, a twelve-year-old boy named Gaylen, to travel the kingdom and ask all the citizens what they think is the most delicious thing.

Riots break out in every town the boy surveys. The queen's brother, Hemlock, uses the chaos to try to take over the kingdom. Gaylen tries to get the help of many people, including dwarves and a woldweller, an ancient forest spirit, but don't offer much help. Only a mermaid named Ardis may be able to help. I don't want to spoil everything, so I'll just say a definition for delicious is agreed upon, and the kingdom is reunited.

I love this book. I think it may be one of my favorite books, and I'm so disappointed in myself for dismissing it as a kid. I thought the idea of people fighting over a word was silly, especially for a word that's meant to describe something pleasant. And it is silly but still plausible. Stranger things have happened in real life. Anyone remember the Pig War? It wasn't really a war, but war was almost started in San Juan Island because a farmer shot a British pig. Or when The Interview almost caused World War 3? Ok, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but still, something bad could have happened.

I think this book is more relevant now than in 1969 due to social media. People fight all the time over things that shouldn't matter especially on Twitter. People would definitely fight over what they think is the most delicious thing in the world is. Would it be enough to cause war? Maybe.

I definitely think more people should read and discuss this book. It's certainly a refreshing read in today's climate. It's entertaining, thought-provoking, endearing, and easy to read. Gaylen starts out as a carefree little boy that you feel sorry for being thrust into this ridiculously dangerous quest but grows into a smart, capable hero.

I only have one minor nitpick. The mythical creatures don't do much. They don't seem to belong to this world or care about being in this world. I guess that's because magic is dying, and each magical creature operates completely differently from human society anyway. I would just like to spend more time on the mythical creatures. But overall, it's an excellent book, and I highly recommend it.
