One thing I find interesting is the change in border color from the original and the VIZ version of the colored pages.
Although mine isn't as good quality since its a photo instead of a scan

Honestly, the more I read Mao, the more the "carbon-copy Inuyasha" accusations make no sense. You know what IS a good Rumiko Takahashi earlier work comparison?
MERMAID SAGA/FOREST
Themes of immortality being a curse? immortals either doing good or wrecking havoc? a stoic immortal protagonist who's lived on the Earth too long?? a plucky female protagonist who holds her own in a fight and SHARES THE SAME CURSE AS AFOREMENTIONED IMMORTAL???? Mystery surrounding WHY said curses exist to begin with???? Hello?????
Not everything goes back to Inuyasha, or even Ranma. Takahashi has been doing this shit longer than most of us online have been alive, so of course, she'll have recurring themes, tropes, styles, etc. No shit. So does practically EVERY SINGLE MANGKA IN EXISTENCE.

@rumicworldweek Day 3 → favorite main character: Yuta [Mermaid Saga]
I have an annoying hipster disease called “main character allergy”, in which I tend to gravitate towards the side cast of a given series rather than the male or female leads. In Rumic World's case, this remains true —save for an exception. Maybe it's because his story isn't over yet, maybe it's because as the protagonist of an anthology he doesn't have much competition, but I certainly want to see more of Yuta the immortal man who longs for death on his own terms.
Fanfic contributions for Rumic World Week over here

Ningyo Shirīzu
A fanart of Rumiko Takahashi's earliest manga Mermaid Saga. Am I the only one who immediately thought of Kikyo once I saw Mana?

Has been ages since I made fan art of these two.
Mermaid saga is probably my second favorite manga of Rumiko Takahashi.

I just watched the latest version of the Mermaid Saga anime by the amazing Rumiko Takahashi and... I’m not entirely pleased.
Tumblr media
The animation, scenery and character designs are absolutely stunning, but... I felt it was watered down and Mermaid Saga is supposed to be renowned for body horror and spilling blood to emphasize the dark side of immortality which is that you can still feel so much pain and coming back to life is very unpleasant. It is not a series for kids and the manga as well as the original 90s OVAs accepted that which is why the blood was red, the wounds were messy, it displayed nudity for artistic reasons and it did shy away from showing people get hurt or die.
Yes, I am all for the art of leaving things to the imagination, but I am also for art being at its best. When it comes to the art of horror, it needs a certain level of dark content. And I need to say this as both an artist and parent; horror is a genre for adults only and it always will be, so when you water it down or make it seem kid friendly by turning the blood black or have the wounds glow in such a fake way... you annoy and in fact, disrespect the audience. I know I felt that way. It almost feel like vandalism or ridiculous North American dubbing which dumbs down an anime to make it kid friendly.
I am an adult. The audience of Mermaid Saga are adults or at least older teens. We can handle red blood, artistic nudes and on screen bloodshed and deaths. Don’t treat the adult audience like their emotions are made of porcelain. Don’t fix what is not broken. I admit it was a good anime adaptation, but not a great one because the watering down of the dark scenes ruined the mood that was built up and I did not appreciate important scenes being changed or removed. And I really hate that one of the best chapters was not adapted into an episode because it was deemed as “too violent” which is a shame.
And it isn’t just Mermaid Saga that suffered due to censorship that in fact vandalized great scenes and the tone of the story. Lots of animes are being watered down to appear less violent when in fact, the theme of the anime is violence. Horror is violent. Fighting is violent. Action is violent. Superhero is violent.
If you cannot accept this, then you need to relearn what these genres are supposed to be like. Also, if you’re so afraid of small kids watching this stuff, keep an eye on your kids and monitor what they watch like I do. Don’t ask people to ruin great art when it was never for kids to begin with.
You know what I’m saying? And if you don’t, here is what the anime reboot looks like;

And this is what the 90s OVA went for;

It's a short anime/mange but you should look into Mermaid forest ( 13 eps) . It's oretty heart breaking but I loved it.
Kigomes design ( inyusha) is based off of the main female character
You know, I think I actually read that years ago and I do remember it being sad. I'll see if I can find it to reread because I would love to read it again. Thanks for reminding me of it!
Also, would you believe I've tried getting into Inuyasha several times and have never been able to finish it? I don't know why it keeps losing me

✨new episode!✨
On this week’s Side Piece, Todd chose a formative movie from his childhood that was absolutely not age appropriate for a middle schooler. Mermaid’s Scar is a classic horror story by Rumiko Takahashi featuring plenty of blood, fascinating lore, and an awesome creature design… the perfect combination for a 12 year old weirdo just getting into anime.
Join us for Becca’s first viewing and Todd’s nostalgia trip, as we discover whether this OAV still holds up almost 30 years later (it does).💅
