Propaganda under the cut.
Mermaid in a Manhole: "It's gorgeous it's sickening it's gory but still definitely body horror those sores are unnatural you are watching this beautiful being rot alive in a bathtub practically"
Altered States: When he heard his cry for help, it wasn't human.

low key tempted to check out mermaid in a manhole since it’s supposed to be on the slightly tolerable side of the guinea pig films. is it worth it?

I don’t know how to articulate it but hideshi hino’s mermaid in a manhole is so so deeply affecting as a woman and an artist and a muse. The obsession. The drama. The TANGIBLE SUFFERING. it’s so so good y’all

Guinea Pig 6: Mermaid in a Manhole, the final film I have on my list. From what I understand, it's probably the most palatable and artistic of the Guinea Pig films. You may have heard of the series if you're familiar with the Disturbing Movies Iceberg that went viral a while back, the lower half of which was basically just snuff footage and fetish porn. Anyway, this is a Japanese film from 1988 where a painter finds his muse in the form of a mermaid that's in a sewer. The mermaid is not healthy. I had to go on effedupmovies to get a hold of this, which is unsurprising.
Honestly, they could have just ended the film when the neighbors walked in on him. We didn't need the police investigation and explanation at the end.
You see, the mermaid is like a metaphor for nostalgia. The more you cling to an idealized version of the past, the more it decays and becomes covered in tumors that are full of rainbow-colored pus and clamworms. The painter was literally hanging around in that sewer because it used to be a river he played in as a child. Taking the ending into consideration, he had similar feelings regarding his wife.
