Why Ariel gave up her voice
Ariel never gave up a voice for a man she has just met and hadn't talked to.
Ariel gave up her voice because she didn't value it. And she didn't value it because people around her didn't value it. They praised it when she used it for show, for singing for an audience that wanted to hear the sound but never listened to her words.
She felt unheard her entire life, misunderstood, alone, isolated. Sure, she has friends, like Flounder, Sebastian and more in the animated series, like Gabriella, her sisters, Urkin, etc. They all loved her but didn't understand her. Looked at her funny when she opened up about her love for the human world. Was even berated by some, like Sebastian and her father. She never felt heard. So, yeah, for everyone else, even the audience, is like: this girl is so stupid, she gave up her beautiful voice for legs.
Because with legs, she can stand, as she always wanted. And she never needed her voice to make Eric fall for her, or the castle's staff, with her personality, always overshadowed by her voice, she won everyone's hearts. With her blubby, spontaneous, happy, curious personality, she made the prince fall for her, made him forget that 'beautiful voice' he fell for (until Ursula put a spell on him, that is). Ariel felt heard for the first time, without a voice.
She didn't give up her voice for a man, but because she was so tired of not being heard, that she never saw the value of her voice, because nobody showed it to her beyond shallow reasons. She learnt, along with everyone else, how important her voice AND words are.
That's why I always felt related to her. I was always heard when it was convenient, if I expressed an opinion the adults around didn't like, I was shut down, belittled and patronized.
Your voice MATTER, will always MATTER. It doesn't matter how way you communicate. Look at Gabriella, in the animated series, she was mute but she still communicated and was heard by her octopus friend.
Please, NEVER let anyone make you believe your WORDS hold no value. Not even yourself.

Something I've noticed is that no matter what fandom or community we are in—black people will always always have to make a safe space for ourselves. Every single fandom I was in there were always black people being treated badly by white people and nonblacks and everytime we spoke on it we are told that we are either making it up or causing problems/discourse.
Even in the LGBTQ+ community where niggas preach about being sooo accepting we have to make *our own flags and spaces because we get talked over and forgotten so damn much. You look up queer related stuff and white people show up first (try the trans selfie tag or look up androgynous stuff on pinterest.) You look up queer shows and it's only white people with a black side character or a white person x a black person like we can't exist on our own. White queers calling black people cops for being uncomfortable with certain labels.
Even with fictional black characters they get the same treatment. Marina from Splatoon 2 and Hobie Brown from Spiderman both are victims of nonblack people hypersexualizing them and masculinizing them. Xinyan from Genshin Impact is a complete and utter stereotype of black people—being seen as aggressive and mean and a literal theft. Don't get me started on how yall whitewash the fuck outta them. It's either sexualize them, whitewash them or forget about them completely.
For some reason white people are seen as more aesthetically pleasing compared to Black people and when we look up aesthetics we literally have to type in "black person x aesthetic" or afro punk or afro goth despite us being the creators of some of these aesthetics. Same with cosplaying, white peoples cosplays are seen as more "canon" compared to black people or even people who's race is literally the character being cosplayed.
Fanfiction writers constantly cater to white people despite trying to market their stuff as "inclusive" while black people get shitted on for making character x black reader fics and don't you know weird ass white people still read them??
Yall tell us to make our own things instead of "complaining" about it and we do, then we get hit with death threats and hate. We make our black edits and get told that it's "blackwashing" and the artists get called the n word, we make black movies and our actors get death threats. We make our own original black art with our black OC'S and get told that we're being selfish and "racist" for not drawing other people. We literally cannot exist without you people hating on us and unnecessarily critiquing us.
[Note: If you nonblack or white niggas come up here and being like "well acschually op🤓☝🏾" I will actually hurt you. If you ask "why is this in the x tag" I will hurt you as well. You try n derail and make it about a different race I'm hurting you.]

connecting to water spirit
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
1. strengthen your intuition. stop looking for outside proof and trust yourself. listen to the callings of your heart. if it feels wrong, don’t do it. if it feels right, trust that. also, work with the cycles of the moon.
2. healing and transformation. do your shadow work. face your dark sides and accept all your flaws with unconditional love. cleanse your space, body and mind. talk with someone you trust or a therapist about your difficulties. journal your feelings out.
3. cleanse yourself with water. drink more water. take a salt baths. eat fruits. listen to the rain. take trips to visit lakes, rivers, waterfalls or the ocean.
4. embrace your emotions. don’t ignore your feelings or hold yourself back from crying. always give your emotions the attention and care they deserve.
5. be compassionate. listen more. learn to receive rightfully. allow others to be themselves without judging and allow yourself to be without self judgements.
6. rest. forget your responsibilities and take a break. indulge in doing nothing and just being. we’re called human beings after all.
7. be nurturing. be mothering to yourself and also spread that caring nature to others. talk about something you are passionate about. cook or bake and make a nourishing fulfilling meal. give gifts. find something to care for and pour your heart into (plants, animals, kids, skills)
8. go with the flow. don’t rush to make decisions. wait and let things unfold for themselves.
9. be artistic. start romanticizing your life. make everything around you aesthetically pleasing. listen to vibrant music. write yourself love letters. create endlessly. start daydreaming about every possibility.
10. indulge. reward yourself. eat your favorite foods. go shopping. watch your favorite tv show or movie. read a romantic books. etc.

i really want to do a full lore analysis of just add magic soonish because damn i just remembered how deep it goes like that show had backstory all the way to the 1800s
unfortunately i don't really have the time to watch a whole show and take notes but it is really cool how much worldbuilding they put into the show from the spices and the book to the actual full timeline that revealed itself through the time travel spells they used
as i've said before i also want to do the same for mako mermaids, because i feel like it was quite shadowed by h20 since that show holds so much nostalgia for people and they were basically aired for two different childhood eras i think, but it has SO much story and worldbuilding that i don't see talked about very often
there is a whole backstory of mermaid politics that is just brushed over which i really want to go back and analyse it fully because it is really interesting and deserves attention! mako mermaids added so much to the overall lore of this universe and i love it dearly i just have to find time to rewatch it
i talk about both of these shows at the same time because i feel like there are a lot of similarities in which their backstories are very detailed and they have a similar plot structure (which is probably intentional given the glaringly obvious similarities between just add magic and just add water) but yeah i just feel like they deserve a more thought out deep dive into everything they have because it is so much fun to learn about

Watched the little mermaid remake with the kids I babysit for. Don't have many opinions on the film as a whole but damn you were right those leads have CHEMISTRY
They doooooooooo! The chemistry is so real. It is 100 pct. the reason it is my favourite of the disney live action remakes (not that the competition is steep given how generally underwhelming the live action remakes are, but y'know).
If you redo a landmark animated film, you gotta give me some of that heat, some of that tension that is one of the few things that animated film struggle to convey quite as well as flesh and blood actors do.
And boy do they deliver. They're that kind of illustrious kind of cinema couple that actually look like they're having fun with each other. The section of the film where they bond and go on their little date is my jam.
The pregnant pauses. The staring. The way they completely short circuit when they touch in any proper way. The way Jonah Hauer King just absolutely towers over teeny tiny Halle Bailey. I'm obsessed. They look so good together.
Tumblr media
Thiiiis! This shit here. Stick a fork in me, I'm done.
Only thing that makes me sad is that they're in a PG film, because they're acting peak horny teen pining. That electric, I barely know how to manage how to be in your presence, but I cannot bear to be away from you either.
I want to see what it would look like if they'd been allowed to turn up the dial.

At this point, I am literally just trying to see this season to an end
Hi hello, yes I’m late, time to review Revolution! Let’s go because at this point I’m getting tired of this show.
So basically the entire episode is Adrien’s trying to tell Marinette that he’s leaving Paris and trying to stop it, but Marinette doesn’t really listen, and is focused on stopping Chloe, who’s now mayor/dictator??? Yeah trust me the logic of this show is gone, somehow people are ok with the super demonized caricature Chloe being mayor like everyone didn’t hate her already (my guess is that this is supposed to be alluding to the current state of world and politics and lack of trust people hold in the government)? Love the lack of consistency and logic.
Tumblr media
Now. I don’t want to criticize Marinette too much, because technically, yes, she was busy trying to handle the Chloe situation (which in itself makes absolutely no sense and by all accounts shouldn’t be possible) but I will note that despite Adrien clearly telling her something was wrong multiple times, she never seems to care or understand? Like he told her multiple times that there’s something wrong, but she never seems to care or do anything about it until it actually affects her (which is unfortunately in character)
But apparently people are criticizing Adrien?! Saying how he’s awful for lying to marinette about having to leave and left it for the last minute? And frankly, the show kinda does it too (in the next episode, many of Adrien’s classmates discuss how awful it is Adrien didn’t say anything and how could he keep this from them like that)
LIKE??? BITCH??? Two points:
1. Adrien’s dad is Gabriel fucking Agreste?!
Like wow what a shocker the child of a man that has proven to abuse and isolate his son on multiple occasions has a fear of asking others for help in his situation because he worries nothing can truly beat this actual billionaire who’s also his legal guardian? And also is implied to have legit magic control powers over him, sentimonster style?
Tumblr media
2. This really isn’t that of a big fucking deal
Like I do not get why this show keeps saying how “Adrien lied to marinette!!! He didn’t tell her he’s moving away!!!! How could he!!!” And how literally everyone and their mom is seeing this as an awful situation for marinette, when in actuality, all she knows is that Adrien will now be living a couple of hours away from her (due to the bullet train between Paris and London) and that he won’t literally be with her every second of the day.
Like I get it for a 14 year old yes this might be a huge fucking deal, but Alya even says so herself! Adrien is in London, they’ll just get a couple of tickets for the train and figure it out from their! And even in the worst case scenario where Adrien stays in London, there’s the option of a long distance relationship (that’s just as valid a relationship as any and would be a refreshing take on how not every relationship is super conventional and in person)
I just really don’t understand why the show shows Adrien genuinely going through some horrible shit from his father (like full on white room torture in the episode after) and then all the show focuses on is how this affects marinette and how sad she must be rather then the genuine psychological damage this must be doing for the kid! Like no one in this show remembers the amount of control Gabriel has on Adrien or something.
Anyways rant aside, before the entire going to London thing happens (btw congrats adrienette shippers for the kiss) there’s a whole thing where Chloe makes a deal to be akumatized by Monarch so she can send people to detention (it’s painted as a torture chamber but it’s literally people walking around with a video of Chloe saying they’re ridiculous, so basically P.E. Class), and then there’s a big fight where Ladybug and Chat Noir almost detransform because they used up their lucky charm and cataclysm and are trapped (btw the lucky charm had no fucking point to the story, why was it underwear? Frankly it was kinda creepy if the writers to have panties as the lucky charm for nothing but a weird joke, and not even connecting to the messages of unity and everyone taking action but ok)
But like… they just don’t?! Like I swear to god this show makes no sense anymore, Ladybug and Chat Noir just say they’ll never give up and fully transform and recharge again, and now they have no time limit and full powers?!
Tumblr media
Like, the entire principal (just like Gabriel said) of the miraculous time limit, is that Kwamis need to recharge after one use, and that adults can lend some of their energy and power to Kwamis and therefore have them last longer to the point they don’t need to detransform, hence “only adults don’t need to detransform”
But now it’s apparently a purely emotional thing and not physical? Ladybug and Chat Noir somehow grew up by saying they’ll never detransform again (I do not at all see how this is a moment of growth to them) and now they just don’t detransform, despite the fact they are physically still kids?
Like by the shows logic of emotional maturity, Gabriel shouldn’t be able to hold a transformation at all then, because he’s the farthest thing from emotionally mature.
And also, it kinda makes all the stakes in fights now null and void? The biggest stake and challenge in each fight from day one of miraculous was “there’s this bad guy, you guys have one chance to use your special powers to beat them, think smart and solve this puzzle” but now it’s just gone??? It would have worked if the akumas overtime became more intense and hard to beat but clearly that’s not the case as even akumas powered up with actual miraculouses can be beat by a normal ladybug and chat noir.
The best thing the show could have done here is rather then make the becoming adult thing emotional maturity, have Ladybug and Chat Noir notice their transformation seems ti be slowly lasting longer as they age (have it be a metaphor for puberty and growing up or something) and then actually make the fights and villains more difficult and compelling so by the time Ladybug and Chat Noir no longer transform back, the priority isn’t for them to keep their secret identity (which sucks and anyways doesn’t matter) but to stay alive!
But anyways I digress, when has this show ever pulled a logical move?
Which speaking of…
I have no fucking clue what they’re doing with Chloe anymore.
They spent. Entire SEASONS! PLURAL! SEASONS! After the introduction of Audrey Bourgeois, telling us how “no Chloe is irredeemable her actions are never justifiable she’s just evil and bad and she has no other reason for doing anything and she’s so bad she’s cooperating with monarch and Lila look how evil she is hate her so marinette looks better in comparison”
To now… suddenly pulling this scene?!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like. WHY??? Why would you purposely demonize Chloe despite the very real opportunity she had to get better and be complex, only to now pull a “whoops wait look guys deep compelling character!”
And while I heard people say this is the show maybe finally making Chloe get her redemption arc after hitting rock bottom, I can’t agree? The show is known for its repetitive nature, and if the show is to redeem Chloe and suddenly make her a good person or give her a compelling reason for acting the way she did, marinette looks bad in comparison, for not having as compelling reasons to do just as bad things:
Example? Marinette and Chloe in season 3’s Animaestro, trying to sabotage Lagami and publicly humiliate her in front of Adrien so she won’t “win him over”.
If Chloe has an explanation for this behavior (she’s taught to be cruel and mean from a young age by an abusive and neglectful mother, and because of her equally neglectful father, she learned the only way she’s heard and anyone cares for her is if she lashes out, and someone will just throw money on the problem) what reason does marinette have? She was raised by perfectly loving and doting (maybe too doting) parents, who from day one have taught her to be kind to others, and to do good.
Both characters did an awful thing, just one character has a genuinely compelling explanation for said behavior, while the other is pure jealousy and wanting the guy for herself by all costs.
So no, I don’t think the show will redeem Chloe for that reason: because it would force marinette to admit her wrongdoings and therefore force the plot to develop!
So this just makes no sense? It feels like a case of the show wanting to have its cake and eat it too, wanting the show to remain the same, Chloe to remain awful for no reason, and for marinette to stay the hero by comparison, but also have the bragging rights to say “we write complex character you guys!”
It makes no sense is my point.
Anyways besides these huge inconsistencies, leaps in logic, and bad writing, I don’t really have anything else about this episode to say? This show has officially come to the point for me where I genuinely think nothing will ever change or be able to fix how wrong everything is (from characterization of everyone except for marinette, the plot, the rules of miraculouses, the LOVE SQUARE)

"Nobody should have to give up their voices to be heard."
I know this is not my typical themed-post, but hear me out, Ariel was so important to me growing up and still is to this day. I was so disappointed for each thing that came out for the new movie, I wasn't sure if I wanted to watch it just to get angry.... but.....
Just saw the little mermaid and, against all odds, I liked it. The trailers didn't sell the movie for me and I admit I only watched out of curiosity bc I needed to get my mind off of some things.
Halle made me fall in love with Ariel's character all over again. The movie has flaws that really bothered me, but I am surprised a live action has made me feelt he same connection to a character that made me feel so understood and seen when I was little. Halle's Ariel reminded me of the Ariel from the animated series, which showed a lot more of character to Ariel and made her my absolute favorite Disney Princess.
Overall, I am glad this version finally made some people see Ariel for who she always was: a fierce, loyal, open-minded, intelligent and capable woman with big dreams, caged in a world that for others and her peers might be enough and so magical (even for Eric!) but for her, it restrained her because she always felt like she didn't belong. The fact that they had to spell out the whole 'Nobody has to give up her voice to feel heard', I hope it resonated with future generations whenever they watch this new version or the animated one.
I think the movie came out when I needed it the most, and I am so glad it shut me up with her good, or even better, portrayal of Ariel. I swear, she and Eric are the main reason why I wanna rewatch it once it comes out in good quality.
*SPOILERS!!!!*
The scene when she swims up and finally, for the very first time, goes out to the surface.... Chills. And the facial expression Ariel made right before, it resonated with me so much. She's like: I am sick of 'you can't', 'you shouldn't', 'that's not for you', 'get over this stupid, senseless phase', and she swims so fast yet so unsure, but still does it.
It also picked my attention that when Ursula is trying to convice her to make a deal with her, Ariel doesn't mention her father or sisters, unlike the animated version. In this, she knows she shouldn't do this. She knows it is fishy (heh) but still does it bc Ursula uses how she was belittled her whole life to help her made a rushed/angered decision with fatal consequences.
I was so saddened by this version of Triton, though, it feltk like he was so plain and not layered enough. Just portrayed as this 'angry, very controlling parental figure that doesn't listen to his daughter', for moments, I doubted he loved Ariel at all... Maybe because she reminds him of his late wife so much and it's painful? Even Ariel seems quite surprised that her own dad gave his life for her. Sure they still are on good terms in the end, but I felt the animated version was a bit deeper and complicated than this. Still, I kinda like it? For personal reasons I won't get into, Triton and Ariel's relationship (animated) always reminded me of my own father and me. And this version.... kind of does, too, sadly. It just made me empathise with Ariel a whole lot more, how she was forced on some mentality she deemed very generalized and unfair.
I'm sorry for the rant, Ariel and her story is so special to me, and this movie... I felt like it came out in the right moment for me.

I haven't seen Ruby Gillman Teenage kraken but from what I've heard they really should've made grandma an evil racist because really? You're not only going to show her "twist" in the trailers but you're also going to commit to it and not subvert expectations. It would've been so smart to make the racism taught by old people and caused by the war because racism is sometimes caused by war also old people are usually real racist.
The answer was staring you down in the face because conflict between family and friends would've been really interesting because it kinda would've made the movie have a good racism allegory which is really hard to find (Elemental is cute but not good with the race allegory) also about some learned hatred that is passed on because the movie would’ve been real nice if it was about two unlikely friends with the mermaid being scared to show the Ruby any vulnerability because she's a pretty mermaid with her bioluminescence being what she actually looks like and Ruby being absolutely isolated from any underwater life getting accommodated to by the mermaid.
But instead we got "EW mermaids R Evil because they're pretty and popular BUtt not Ruby Because She's not like Those biMbos She's absolutely spEcial and Did We meNtIoN That tHeY ShoULD toTes figHT to tHe deAtH" it's real black and white morality that could've really expanded on what it had with some dashes of complexity that could've really added more intrigue, mystery and suspense by adding some unreliable information, search for the truth and hiding a friendship with someone your loved ones disapprove of. Of course the reveal would be kickass.

I'm honestly afraid for Little Mermaid.
No
I think Halle is going to kill it. She looks beautiful and sounds beautiful as usual.
It looks amazing and I think Melissa may slay as Ursula.( the verdict is still out on that)
Eric looks like something from a Regency period piece. ( Come on Pride and Prejudice/Bridgeton vibes).
It looks colorful.
I'm afraid because I feel like they are going to add " wokeness" to it to combat the criticism that Ariel always got.
You know the one
"She only wanted to be human because of a man."
Which people convinclly forgot that she wanted to be a human WAY BEFORE she even saw, met, and rescue Eric.
She was collecting things for the upper world before she met Eric.
She had a whole freaking song taking about being apart of the uppper world before she met Eric and people forgot that.
Look up the Lyrics of A Part of Your World.
They did with Beauty and the Beast, Lion King ,Mulan and Aladdin( which none of these need it at all being at the heart of the Renaissance) so I just hope they don't try to add anything to Little Mermaid.
Leave it alone unless it adds to her adventurous sprit not trying to combact the criticism.

The fact I can't write this thing out😭
The twilight au I want.
Edward is a merman and is currently staying around forks and La push waters with his family, where bella shlpots him and gets intrigued by the flashes of a tail she think she sees.
There are rumors going around of fish people, old legends and weird cautioning to not swim in the waters during a full moon, or the evening/night, when they hunt.
Are they vegetarian? Do they sing luring songs to humans to draw them to the water? Are they staying away but other merfolk see it as hunting grounds?
Is the wolfpack still a wolfpack or a group of fisherman with Mad skills? Destined to catch fishfolk and murder them?
Will bella still think Jake's cool if he doesn't turn into a wolf?
Can the Cullen's turn and join land or are they staying in true form?
I don't know!😠

THIS representation of a girl really noticing a boy:

And THIS representation of infatuation:
Tumblr media
Is very different from THIS representation of infatuation:
Tumblr media
And no. I will not shut up about how people should pay attention to the difference in what filmmakers are choosing to be realistic about from movie to movie, and what they’re choosing to present an idealized version of. Because otherwise, these two movies would be so similar in theme.
The Little Mermaid portrays: - A realistic reaction of a teenager when her parent is overprotective. She’s flawed and she’s focused more on her father’s inability to understand than her own actions.  - An idealized crush on a boy, where attraction looks sweet, girlish, a little self-mocking, and is based on more than just his looks.
Turning Red portrays:
- An idealized reaction of a teenager when her parent is overprotective. She’s not focused on her own embarrassment or how crazy her mom acted, she’s the middle school martyr who scolds herself for her mom’s over-the-top response and shows very little conscious awareness of her mom’s faults.
- A realistic crush on a boy, where attraction just looks like lust, and lust is funny, and objectifying boys ain’t pretty, but hey, it sure gets a laugh.
At the end of these movies, one teenager gets to be understood by her parent without being completely blameless for all the destruction getting her way caused—and the parent fulfills his job to protect her AND provide for her happiness. And at the end of the other movie, the other teenager gets to understand her PARENT, is justified for the destruction she caused because really she should’ve been allowed to have her way all along—and the parent is only rewarded when she lays off and quits protecting her child.
Unbelievable.
