Well, well, well... Guess who finally got to work with the incredible @friendofcarlotta on a bang collaboration?

I have honestly been pining to get my hands on Dean/Cas merman fic for ages. So when I saw this story up for claims in the @deancasswitchbang​ this year I knew I had to pounce on it—and then I squeaked with joy when I saw who the author was. Working with Tina was an absolute delight and she was so good about putting up with my obsessive tendencies trying to get these images just right. I hope y’all read and enjoy the story as much as I do—be sure to comment and leave lots of love and kudos!

If you want a little more detail on the individual pieces and watercolor techniques I used, read on below the cut.

The scene with the horse on the beach, under the moonlight, was the first piece I was immediately inspired to work on for the story. I just knew how I wanted it to look in my head and I came pretty close to pulling it off. The painting is a (very) large 18″x24″, so here’s a close-up on Cas. I had so much fun painting his tail, I have to show it off a little better. 

I also really enjoyed painting the water - it was basically two layers of quick washes, one wet on wet, the second just to darken the shadows as I didn’t want to lose the spontaneity. I used a lot of masking fluid to preserve the white for the waves and foam, and some salt-resist in the sky to suggest distant stars.

This next piece was meant to show Cas’s face illuminated by firelight as he’s...well, you’ll need to read the story to find out the context. The reddish-brown color used on the background and on the highlights of his face is actually a color-shifting paint from Dreamland Watercolor. I wish I could capture the effect it creates better in a single photo or scan, but it basically changes color based on the angle from which you look at it (and on rough-surfaced paper it has a very shimmery effect). Here’s an angled-shot to show how much it varies depending on how you look at it:

The bedroom scene was a LOT of fun to work on, if quite a challenge. Cas’s unique, ah, merman anatomy was inspired by dolphins (oh the things I never imagined I’d be looking up for art references) with of course plenty of creative liberties taken. 

When Mr. Hawkland first saw me working on that one, he was a bit Live Slug Reaction about it. But as it started to come together ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) he became rather gleeful in offering artistic suggestions to make sure Cas’s junk “really popped”. (Thank Jack for enthusiastic and understanding partners.) I had a terrible time getting a photograph of that piece I was happy with—all the blues and greens and flesh colors were a challenge to capture. But I finally lucked on to a good lighting day so you can see all the shimmery blues and greens (and Dean’s booty freckles, too!)

Finally the shell bracelet was done on ultra-smooth hot press paper so I could get all that detail in and not have it get lost in the texture. I usually prefer cold press/rough paper but have been experimenting a bit more with other textures of late. You’ll see more examples of that in one of my other projects, coming soon...

Merman!Castiel

A warrior of the sea people who is not particularly sympathetic to the invasion of the “bipeds” into the ocean. Mermaids are cruel to people caught in the sea. However, Castiel differs from his relatives in that he himself is not afraid to crawl onto land - to lie on the beach, for example. Castiel looks like a winged fish. The dorsal fins allow it to hover above the water for a short time with the necessary acceleration.

He has to crawl like a snake, leaning on his hands. Very strong hands, yes.

But still, the element of the sea people is the underwater world. There Castiel can shine in all his glory.

So I did a thing!

In honour of mer-may and my growing obsession with supernatural I have draw mer-cas. Im still struggling with his hair and getting it to look like castiels but I think I'm getting there.

His fish 'part' is based of a black veil angel fish mostly because they are my favourite and also because they remind me of him. I also just mostly like how the fishes fins look.
