The veiled lady merman sometimes do end up stuck in plastic waste because of their sticky skin, but the large poncho-like veil covering them is not waste! The foul-smelling layer attract mates, believe it or not, and also make sure predators stay far away
Gustav was a bit of an odd case. He was a Swamp Lurker, and an unusually crafty one at that. He seemed to understand what our research boat was, and that it was here for him. It was like he was taunting us, showing his face just enough for us to know we spotted him before going to hide in the mud again. If it wasn't for the fact he was the largest documented individual of his species, I'd have probably given up after the first week. We spent four in that horrible swamp. If I die before seeing him again, it'd be too soon.
I was falling asleep the whole time painting, like, actually nodding off. Her color scheme is real cute but this isn't my best work :/ which is funny, because yesterday's turned out the best so far.
Finally finished this one! Was worried I wouldn’t get it done today, but I managed to pull it off!
While Cinco de Mayo is a relatively small holiday in Mexico, in the United States, it’s typically considered a celebration of Mexican-American culture (and an excuse to drink alcohol). For today’s mermaid, I decided to include some well-known references to Mexican culture, such as marigold flowers, Monarch butterflies, and an outfit inspired by Jalisco dress, worn by some traditional folk dancers. She’s also based on the axolotl, a species of salamander native to Mexico.
Here's another one Im super proud of! We love our African queens!! 💛💛 I used inspiration from beautiful African jewelry and wanted to show off her tail which is a light source!
I had this one in mind too when I did Milotic!! I might do some art of this design with the Milotic or perhaps some of their younger years or other water types!!
