What happens when you give a mer a ball?
Theyll stubbornly try to sink it and refuse defeat, of course
Until they pop it
Moon might be grumpy if he pops it on accident

Wangxian Mermay 2023
Day X: The Hunt.
War was a human invention.
Their blood, and fights, and bodies filled the rivers and shores. Providing food for every creature that came across them. The natural world did not hold their beliefs, they did not care for things such as 'soul' or 'respect'. The Cycle was what dominated. Everything was a part of nature.
Humans just believed themselves exempt.
They cursed when they found their half eaten brethren, tossed ash and perfumed soap into the water, spiked nets with barbs, and when they spotted them in the rivers, took endless pleasure in hunting them.
This time they made a mistake.
They took his son.
Wei Ying hunted them for ten days, inland through the waterways, human built dams, destroyed the traps they set to catch or slow him.
The foolish ones became his prey early on. Keeping his son chained like their four-legged hunting animals, and venturing to the water to wash or relive themselves. They fell first and tasted the worst. He tossed their bodies back on land, daring more to come to avenge their fallen, to come to him in the deep.
Unfortunately, they were smart enough to know better.
As he followed their scent and the smell of his son, he dwindled their numbers down to a scant few. He lured them to the lowlands, then waited, knowing the high tide would cut them off from the shore.
They would have been at his mercy. Had the others not come.
They smelled of winter, of freshwater and crystalline rivers, of an earth ash that stuck in the back of his throat and made him yearn for more.
He watched them drop from the sky, swords gleaming, reflecting firelight and the dark waters as they fed the land the blood of their enemies.
"The reports said there would be more." One of them said, smooth and even toned. His voice did not grate against Wei Ying's ears like so many did.
"Mn." The other hummed.
He stood against the firelight, his white edged in the orange glow. His dark hair hung straight and thick against pale skin that smelled of that scent. Wei Ying wanted more, he wanted that flesh against him, he wanted to breathe it in. He wanted to hear that melodious voice speak to him.
Wei Ying swam closer, intent upon finding his son, and seeing more of this human if he could.
"Wangji!" The other shouted.
His son screamed, he darted around grabbing hands, heading for the dark river.
Wei Ying leapt from the water, coiling around his son, holding his trembling body. He snapped at the hand reaching for his son just catching the edge of his sleeve.
His hearts beat a drum in his ears. The clothes were smooth, like an eel, between his teeth.
His eyes. Oh. His eyes. Bright like every day of sun breaking over the waves. Like the glow of fish in the rivers. Like the human made fire behind him.
Wei Ying released the sleeve, pulling back, holding his son close.
The humans stood upon the wet soil, staring at him with blades bathed in blood, the reek of it permeating the air, mixing with the thick ion of the incoming storm.
"He…is yours?" The one said, his voice resounding through Wei Ying's ears, his longer fingered hand gesturing towards his son.
"He is mine." Wei Ying stroked his sons hair, smoothing it away from the bruise on his temple. His son hiccuped a sob, pressing himself closer.
"Shh baobei, shh, I am here." He kissed the bruise, humming as he rubbed circles around the skin. The bruise began to glow gentle from below, spreading across his skin until it was gone, only healthy, unblemished skin remained.
"That was.." the one said, he handed a dark cloth to the other, putting his blade away. He looked from the bruise to Wei Ying. Folding his arms, he bowed at the waist. "I am Lan Xichen of Gusu Lan, have you heard of us?"
Wei Ying tipped his head.
There were stories sung years ago, one of their own who had been captured and forced to stay. She found her escape, but not after she bore two children. Wei Ying had never met her, Qing-jie had, when she came from tending to her, she always smelled of…
Wei Ying bent closer, breathing in the man's scent. Earthy, spicy, it stuck in the back of his throat.
"I haven't." He said "There have been no formal introductions made since before you." He nodded to Lan Xichen, "Until now, that is. I am called Wei Ying."
"Wei-gongzi, have you been hunting the Wen's? We noticed their decimated numbers."
Wei Ying held his son, kissing the top of his head, "They took what was mine. I had every right." He coiled tighter around his son, bearing his teeth. He dared these men to challenge him, their ends would be as swift as the dead he left behind him.
Lan Xichen held up his hands, "We mean no offense. I was just…the rivers are laid with traps and snare nets to prevent Jiaoren coming this far inland."
Wei Ying scoffed, "We have lived before your forefathers, when you weren't even a thought yet. There is nothing you can do to keep us from where we desire to be."
Lan Xichen shared a look with the other, Lan…Wangji perhaps was his name. Wei Ying only knew him by smell, earth and sea, sunset and spice.
They shared a look for a long time before Lan…Wangji looked back at him, bowing as Lan Xichen had before.
"I am Lan Zhan, courtesy: Wangji. My xiongzhang would like to ask for your help in our efforts against the Wen."
The Wen's were not a singular threat. They knew of the Jiaoren. Qing-jie and A-Ning had worked in his castle before he wanted to conquer the world. They knew his threat would not end at the shore. Conversations amongst elders and Shifters had been tense and long these last few months. Wei Ying was ambivalent towards any decisions made, he knew he would likely be held back until the last minute.
Until they had taken his son.
"We have noticed Wen Rohan's movements. We know he threatens all of us. Not just those that choose the land. However, I must return home, to tell my jiejie that my son is safe." He looked at Lan Zhan, meeting those golden eyes. His hearts racing, the only other time he felt this excited was when his son was born.
"Come with me. I can tell you how the elders decide to help."
"Wangji." Lan Xichen put a hand on his brothers arm, tightening his hold.
It pleased Wei Ying to see Lan Zhan struggle to pulled his eyes away, he bowed to Lan Xichen,
"I will not be gone long." He put a hand over the one on his arm. "I promise to return to you shortly."
"Wangji." There was a wealth of meaning in that single word. 'stay with me' 'be safe' 'don't get hurt's and finally 'come back quickly'
Wei Ying heard it all because he had said it all before. He nuzzled the top of his son's head, pressing kisses into his hair, smoothing the rotten stench of humans away with his own. Truthfully he hardly smelled better, and he would rather his own smell of human-choked riverways on his son, than the reek of them.
"Are you well A-Yuan?"
Tucked in his tail, wrapped up like a octopus does its pretty, A-Yuan blinked his pretty eyes open, smiling at him, "Yes diedie, I'm okay."
"Wei…Ying."
Wei Ying looked up, blinking water from his eyes. It had begun to rain without him noticing.
Being around this man was dangerous, between him and A-Yuan, he forgot all surroundings, made no notice of anything except them.
"You will come with me, yes?"
He nodded, a single polite action.
Wei Ying smiled, "Good, I'm sure your mother would like to see you as well." He turned, pointing to the end of the island, "Meet me over there, we will travel together."
His arm was grabbed, he was not pulled, only held.
Lan Zhan and Lan Xichen had wide eyes, staring at him. Faces pale and mouths hanging open.
He looked between them, turning back around to face them, he laid a hand over the one on his arm.
"You didn't know, did you?"
"We…were told she had…passed " Lan Xichen said. A tiny frown, "Are you sure it's her?"
"You smell like her." Wei Ying bent close to Lan Zhan, breathing him in. He could hear the rushing of blood through his veins, how his heart pounded with Wei Ying so close.
He let his lips drift across his cheek as he pulled away.
"Will you still come?"
"Wangji…the war." Lan Xichen sounded torn between his personal desire, and duty.
Wei Ying did not envy him.
"I am going to ask the Jiaoren for help." He took Lan Xichen's hand, "I will write often. You will know if I am safe."
"I will protect him as I do my son." Wei Ying stroked A-Yuan's hair.
Lan Xichen closed his eyes, taking in a breath. The water was lapping at their ankles now, he couldn't not be aware of it.
"Be safe." He looked between them "keep each other safe. Write to me. I will pray that the Jiaoren are willing to help."
He pulled his sword from his hip. It hummed a song Wei Ying could not name, but resonated down his chest, settling into him like the songs of whales, or dolphins, or the way that sharks hum when they're close.
Lan Xichen stepped onto it, flying above the carnage, and away from his brother.
Wei Ying looked back to find Lan Zhan's eyes already in him.
He smiled, "Shall we go?"
Started out as a sort of dark!Wei Wuxian hunting down Wen's who kidnapped his son. In true mirmb fashion it manifested itself into something else completely.
Was it a good something?

I got the official MerMay Prompt list from Instagram

That being said, who's gonna participate this year? I know I am. The first time I got into MerMay I didn't have a prompt list and spent the month practicing how to draw mermaid tails. 🧜🏽‍♀️

MerMay Writing Prompts
Find other prompts I’ve done here!
These are probably terrible…lol.  Mostly for my own benefit and I was kinda bored...maybe they’ll inspire you?
Feel free to alter gender/pronouns as you see fit.
Disclaimer: Please do not repost. Reblogs are welcome.
A girl is thrown overboard from a ship after stowing away, only to be rescued by a strange creature beneath the water.
Siren’s are the violent counterpart to mermaids' gentler nature, Person A thinks they are speaking to a mermaid only to realize too late they’re being enticed by a siren.
A shipwrecked sailor makes a deal with a mer creature trapped in a pool of water--only to realize too late not to make bargains with creatures they don’t know.
You steal a pearl from the beach, turns out it belongs to a mermaid who will do anything to get it back.
A siren’s rite of passage is to kill a human.  Person A is about to complete their own rite only to realize they know the human they’re assigned to kill.
A fisherman captures a mermaid in his nets and can either release it, or take it back to land and be crowned a hero.
A mermaid is captured by humans, their friend (mer or human) will do anything to get them back where they belong.
You grew up on stories of mermaids and sirens and creatures beneath the water--now that you find yourself on the beach you go searching for a little hint of those stories.  Only to get stranded in a cave with the rising tide.  Turns out…you’re not alone.
A mermaid finds their true love in the person that can hear their real voice.
There are legends about a creature out in the depths of the sea, one that holds power over the weather of an island.  Person A chooses to sacrifice themself for the safety of their home.
Person A goes swimming early in the morning and gets stranded on a buoy/floating dock in the middle of the lake.  Their rescuer?  A mermaid.
Turns out you have the ability to shift into a mermaid, the catch? Any bit of water that touches your skin sparks the transformation.
Walking along the beach you find a creature washed up on the shore.  Grateful for help, they offer you a favor in return.
For a simple kiss a mermaid will grant you one wish.
You thought you were a strong swimmer, but after you get caught in a riptide you find yourself struggling to the surface when you hear something in the waves: come to me.
A witch curses you to never stray from the water until you find your true love.
The sea is never supposed to be silent.  While sailing one day, everything goes still and then you see the eyes looking up through the water at you.
Mermaids are slight kleptomaniacs.  After losing your favorite piece of jewelry/item, you go diving in the ocean to steal it back.
You press a conch shell to your ear and hear a voice calling out to you.
You collect trash from the beach hoping to help clean up--a sea creature decides to thank you.  By kidnapping you.
You’re the mermaid keeper of an underwater library, when an item goes missing you vow to bring it back safely.
Mermaids are known to be good astronomers, a sailor is tasked with steering a ship at night with no idea what he’s doing.  He relies on the help of the mermaid but has to give up his voice for a day for every night he gets help.
Death on the ocean is common, as it turns out mermaids are simply the souls of those who have passed.  A sailor, lost at sea, soon becomes haunted by a mermaid looking to say good-bye to a former lover.
“Do not go out onto the water at night.” // “Why?” // “That’s when they come to the surface.”
“The last time I saw you, you were drowning.”
Using a mermaid as an alarm clock is quite useful actually--they’re very in tune with times of day and they are quite skilled at screaming.
“I don’t want to be a lady.  I want to lure men and women to their deaths.”
After leaving the water to explore the world, a mermaid discovers the miracles of ice cream.
There’s a monster in the river that sinks passing ships that sail by unless they offer a sacrifice: a perfect pearl found only in a specific part of the sea.
Turns out the princess to the kingdom by the sea isn’t actually human.  The merfolk have chosen to take back what is theirs.
“The song doesn’t affect me.”

Can I have 1 and 3 with lambert?
As a note for this one: Reader is an shark-based follower but has a tail instead of legs.
1) "I thought all merfolk were half-fish" 3) "Stop thrashing! I'm trying to get your tail free!"
.........
"Alright, Neptune's Bounty is in effect..so I shouldn't have any trouble catching some decent fish this time."
Whistling a small tune, Lamb marched towards the pier that stretched out towards the vast sea. Pilgrim's Passage was rather quiet around this time of day, so they didn't have to worry about being disturbed by any of the pilgrims or the lighthouse keeper--not that they would bother the only god left in the Old Faith.
Upon reaching the pier's edge, they sat down and cast the line from their fishing pole. They could already see the various silhouettes of sealife under the water's surface.
Hopefully, they won't be catching any boots or seaweed this time around. They wanted to get a good haul, like a dozen giant tunas or lobsters.
Only the best for their cult.
But then again, their followers have been rather picky about their meals as of late, specifically requesting ones with fish, meat, and veggies...but primarily fish. They didn't expect the demand to be so high, so they were barely able to scrape together what little seafood they had stored at the time..
While simultaneously dealing with followers who were apparently allergic to said seafood.
It's too bad Lamb couldn't read their minds and learn that information beforehand, it would've spared them a lot of agony..
Regardless, they finally decided to conduct the Neptune's Bounty ritual, hoping their prayers were answered and the gods of the sea would bestow them with a sufficient supply of fish.
'Maybe I can teach them how to catch their own fish-'
Feeling a sudden tug on their line, Lamb snapped out of their thoughts and saw the shadow moving under the surface, realizing they snagged something big.
A lot bigger than any squid or octopus they've previously obtained.
With a grin of excitement, they hastily began reeling their catch in...but whatever was on the other end fought back. It's clear it was aggressive and hellbent on pulling them in the water.
Yet Lamb was hellbent on catching it, so they stood up and kept their feet planted on the ground.
That's okay; they could play this game of tug-of-war all night if they must.
The cult will survive for a few more hours.
After several long minutes, they finally gained the upper hand, reeling in their catch and yanking with all their might-
And out of the water flew a creature who resembled a person with a shark tail, but their entire body slammed into Lamb's before they could get a good look at them, knocking the little sheep off their feet.
They landed on their back with a pained grunt as the stranger quickly scrambled off of them, attempting to flee back into the water.
But to no avail as their tail became ensnared in the fishing pole line, the hook stabbed into it.
"What is this?!!! OW!!"
Hearing the yells, Lamb sat up in a slight daze, dusting off their fleece as they finally were able to see what they pulled out from the water:
You, a shark who looked similar to the few fish followers they had back in the cult...but you had no legs. Instead, there was indeed a shark's tail making up your lower half.
They could only stare in disbelief.
They've read about these sort of mythical creatures in books: merfolk, to be more precise. But...you didn't look anything like the pictures they've seen.
"I thought..all merfolk were half-fish.." They muttered to themselves, eyebrows furrowed.
However, they weren't aware that you could hear them, as you stopped struggling for a brief moment to glare at them, realizing they were the one who dragged you out of the water.
"Yeah, well you're wrong." You scoffed, having ripped the hook out of you.
Yet untangling yourself from the line was another challenge. You tried biting into it and thrashing about, but nothing was working.
Lamb scrambled to their feet, going over to help cut you free. However, the moment you saw a dagger manifest in their hand, you snarled and smacked their hand away, not wanting that blade anywhere near you.
"Stop thrashing! I'm trying to get your tail free!" They shouted, trying to get you to hold still. "You're...making this..difficult for the both of us!!"
"This wouldn't even be happening if you looked before casting your line, stupid sheep!!"
All of the sudden, they stopped and stared down at you for a few long moments, before they felt anger beginning to rise in them. They clutched the dagger tighter in their hands.
"What did you just call me?"
"A stupid sheep." You repeated. "Is that not what you are?"
"May I remind you that I am the promised liberator of the Old Faith." They snarled, eyes glowing red. "I am the god who cleansed this place of those heretic bishops! I saved all of your souls from their blasphemy...and you DARE THREATEN ME?!!" Their words came out as a demonic hiss, sharp teeth growing in their mouth. "Speak to me that way again, I will gut-"
"I'm sorry, you're the liberator?"
"......what?" They blinked away their menacing features, noticing the confused expression on your face. "Of course I am! You haven't heard of me?"
"The axolotls spoke highly of you, though all they said was that you brought crystals to their lighthouse."
"And..that's it? You weren't in the cult within Anchordeep or in allegiance to Kallamar?"
"..oh, so because I'm a shark, I automatically belong to that depressing and damp realm?" You sneered, giving them a pointed glare. "I passed through there once and could taste the pollution in my gills..I was sick for days. You think I'd join his cult then?"
Lamb was quiet for a few moments, their face blushing as red as their fleece when they realized their mistake.
Once again, they let all that power go to their head, wrongfully assuming that everything that lived and breathed in the Old Faith knew them and their deeds. Plus they jumped to the conclusion that you hailed from Anchordeep since most of their fish followers did.
Apparently you lived on the outskirts, not associated with any of the Old Faith's cults.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to assume, and I didn't mean for my hook to snag you." They apologized profusely, sighing. "Now will you please let me help you? Because it looks like your tail's only getting more tangled."
".....fine, but only because you apologized." Rolling your eyes, you patiently waited for Lamb to cut you loose, not struggling like you did before. And once they did, you smiled and dove back into the water, resurfacing moments later to gaze up at the sheep.
"Thanks, Lamb."
Nodding, their dagger morphed back into the Red Crown as it floated back onto their head. All the while, you watched in fascination. "Interesting, I've never seen a godly crown up-close before. I guess I gotta believe you truly are the liberator."
'Oh, so now you do?' They thought, deciding not to speak such a snarky reply unless they wanted you picking another fight.
Instead, they pouted as they realized their fishing pole was now useless..
Until they remembered their crown could assist them, so they turned it into one, eager to get back to work.
"Sorry about your old fishing pole."
"It's fine. As long as I get some seafood back to my cult, they should be satisfied for the next few days." They attached bait to their hook before casting the line, ensuring it didn't go anywhere near you.
"Can't that crown make fish appear in the streams surrounding your territory?" You tilted your head. "I read that they can do just about anything."
"Yeah, well..it can't do that. I conduct rituals so that they're more plentiful here, in this very spot. Just ask him. He says this is the best place to do it." Lamb pointed to the fisherman, who smiled and waved at you both.
You waved back. "I know him. We trade a lot. Why not just..get some fish from him instead?"
"...times are tough right now. I was mugged by Midas, got ripped off by some "fortune gods", and did a ritual of wealth distribution all in the same day. My followers have been stingy with their altar donations, too, but then they complain that I'm being "greedy" when I can't afford to buy them nicer decorations! So no, I can't just waste money buying fish all the time."
Honestly, they didn't know why they were ranting about their money problems to a random merperson like yourself. Yet you held a sharp-toothed grin on your face.
"So you've slayed the tyrannical bishops and freed hundreds from their ruling.....but you don't know how to manage money?"
"Th-That's what my tax enforcer's for!" They blurted out, growing flustered. "The only thing I do is sell what I don't need and hope it's enough!"
It didn't help when you started chuckling at their plights, shaking your head in amusement. "Oh, you're a funny one, Lamb.." You snickered. "Nobody's made me laugh like that in a long time, so thank you."
"You're welcome." They smiled a little bit, only to realize that the sun was setting and soon it'll be dark. "Um..sorry, but I really need to focus on catching some fish before nightfall."
"Of course, I'll leave you be. I'm sure we'll cross paths again. But...there's just one thing I'd like to know."
Lamb looked down at you as the reeled in a tiny minnow, tilting their head in curiosity.
Did you wanna know where the cult was?
Or perhaps..join it?
They could certainly make accommodations-
"How do your fish followers feel about eating their own kind?"
Oh.
"I taught them to embrace cannibalism." They stated dryly.
"....wow, you really do have an answer for everything."
