Spider Baby or, The Maddest Story Ever Told (1967): A Sublime Slice of Gran Guignol.

Virginia Merrye playfully imagining herself as a human spider.

The three surviving children of Titus W. Merrye live in a dilapidated mansion where servant Bruno takes care of the increasingly psychotic descendants.  All three suffer from what the narrator calls “Merrye Syndrome,” a neurological illness that manifests itself from the age of ten, causing the brain to slowly decay and make its victims enter into a violent and infantile state. The Merrye siblings have two distant cousins who unconvienently become interested in laying claim to the family mansion and any money remaining in the Merrye Estate. But not long after they pay a visit, they start to have serious regrets about their decision to see the demented family. 

Spider Baby, a masterpiece of the weird, is one of the strangest horror movies screened in the 60´s. Filmed in black and white, it stands out mostly for how the film goes back and forth in tone, from humorous and naive to eery and depraved. Part Addams Family part Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the naunces are not subtle. There are other manifest contrasts as well: Virginia and Elizabeth Merrye´s beauty is only equivalent to the depravity of their nature; Ralph is grotesque and feral yet innocent. Although the movie does not pretend to touch deeper philosophical musings, we can not help but notice that the film touches the idea that a regression to our very own nature or to be “merrye” would be mean a descent into violence, however, each and every character in the film carries their violence in their own unique way: the distant cousins, although “civilized” in appearance still want to coax the Merrye siblings out of their lawful inheritance, a quite brutal act itself. 

Simultaneously dark and humorous, the film is one of the best in its genre. A no-budget, kooky nightmare for a humid summer night.

(The film began to develop a signifant cult following after the 80´s and is now regarded as a minor classic of ‘60s horror. The film has also appeared under the misleading titles Cannibal Orgy and The Liver Eaters, as well as Spider Baby, or the Maddest Story Ever Told.)

* based on the idea that the Merrye Syndrome causes physical changes to the body, particularly the digestive system * the kids are preteens here * this isn’t really gory, just kinda icky ; skip if vomit is a trigger / squick

At first, Virginia thinks it’s all her fault for daring Ralph to eat the centipede. No sooner do the backmost legs wriggle between her brother’s lips than he’s doubled over. His moans of pain are wet & garbled with vomit. Virginia calls out his name -- several times, each a little more frightened than the last. He can’t answer, but he does look up, and Virginia can see the lapine terror in his eyes, the dark irises unmoored in seas of white. She needs to run & get help ; she doesn’t want to leave him here alone ; there’s too much sick ; it’s red ; it’s pooling between her toes ; it’s getting redder. Virginia notices the centipede twitching in the curdled slurry, only to lose sight of it beneath a fresh torrent.                                                                              ♡ Later, when the doctor’s come & gone, Virginia learns that she & the centipede had nothing to do with it. She’s confused, still, but she understands that Ralph is having more growing pains. She hears him say that it hurts a lot worse than his legs ever did, that it feels like a fire’s burning through his stomach -- but mostly she hears him wailing. People don’t make sounds like that, Virginia knows, but sometimes animals do, when they’re being ripped apart by other animals. That’s the first day.

♡ merryes affected by the syndrome often have unusual dietary needs & restrictions. ANIMAL PROTEINS & FATS make up the base of a healthy diet, and nutrient dense ORGAN MEATS are especially important. ( & especially - ESPECIALLY important for a young, growing cannibal ! ) raw meat may be just as appealing & nutritious to a merrye as cooked meat, and the more acidic contents of the afflicted gut renders them less susceptible to food - borne illnesses. complex carbohydrates provide less nourishment & satisfaction, but, at the very least, act as harmless garnishes. many merryes have NO NEED for vegetables, as their digestive systems are less equipped to break down plant cellulose ; eaten in excess, fibrous greens cause dyspepsia. by contrast, merryes have no issue processing the massive volume of cholesterol that their diets entail. * SIDENOTE : while all of this applies to virginia & her brother to some degree, virtually NONE of it is true for elizabeth
