The Mazarin Stone pt 2
Should I be starting this at 20 past 11 when I have work tomorrow? No. No I shouldn't. And yet here I am. Because time is an illusion and sleep is for the weak.
(It's not, this is a terrible idea...)
Last time on the adventures of Billy:
Sherlock Holmes was looking for a shiny diamond. The guy who stole it came around and was about to bash in his head with his cane when he discovered it wasn't actually Sherlock at all! It was a waxwork. Then it ended with something that apparently wasn't supposed to be an innuendo.
Maybe I should commission some wax works of myself, just in case someone ever comes 'round to try to kill me.
Tumblr media
“It is no use your fingering your revolver, my friend,” he said in a quiet voice.
Talking of things that aren't intended to be innuendoes.
The prize-fighter, a heavily built young man with a stupid, obstinate, slab-sided face...
Billy has been going to the same school of character description as Watson, clearly.
"Now, look here, Count Sylvius. I'm a busy man and I can't waste time. I'm going into that bedroom."
Tumblr media
I don't know if it's just because I haven't slept well all week, or if this really is just full of inintentional innuendo, but everything is coming across as dirty right now.
“What is it, then?” asked Merton anxiously as his companion turned to him. “Does he know about the stone?”
I'm going to take a second to say that it's really nice how the muscle is being allowed to ask questions and they're being answered. So often, the brawny one just gets told what they need to know and nothing more, but here Mr Merton seems to be an equal partner in this endeavour. Good for these guys, honestly. Just because a man's a prize fighter and has a... 'slab-sided face' doesn't mean he shouldn't be allowed to be as involved in the criminal proceedings as anyone else.
“That's right. Maybe somebody's behind a curtain. Too many curtains in this room.”
Well, Billy's definitely listening somewhere, or he wouldn't have been able to write this.
Tumblr media
There was a vague sound which seemed to come from the window. Both men sprang round, but all was quiet. Save for the one strange figure seated in the chair, the room was certainly empty.
Was the waxwork just replaced by a real person? I kind of want that to have happened.
“I've fooled better men than he,” the Count answered. “The stone is here in my secret pocket."
Oh my god. I can't believe you just said that out loud. While in enemy territory. You have the survival instincts of a panda, istg.
Tumblr media
One or other of us must slip round with the stone to Lime Street and tell him.” “But the false bottom ain't ready.”
Yep, that's right, just blurt out literally everything right here and now. Clearly this is an excellent place to discuss the details of your secret plans.
"Come back here, out of a line with that keyhole."
Now you're trying to be surreptitious?
“Thank you!” With a single spring Holmes had leaped from the dummy's chair and had grasped the precious jewel.
He had replaced the dummy. Excellent. Love it.
“No violence, gentlemen—no violence, I beg of you! Consider the furniture!"
Possibly the least effective 'please don't murder me' I've seen.
Tumblr media
"It gave me a chance of listening to your racy conversation which would have been painfully constrained had you been aware of my presence.”
Tumblr media
“A fair cop!” said he. “But, I say, what about that bloomin' fiddle! I hear it yet.” “Tut, tut!” Holmes answered. “You are perfectly right. Let it play! These modern gramophones are a remarkable invention.”
I can't believe someone actually said 'A fair cop!'
And the wonders of modern technology. A Recording? How unexpected!
“How do you do, Lord Cantlemere? It is chilly for the time of year, but rather warm indoors. May I take your overcoat?” “No, I thank you; I will not take it off.”
Haha! He is secretly three kobolds in a trenchcoat!
“Every man finds his limitations, Mr. Holmes, but at least it cures us of the weakness of self-satisfaction.”
OH boy, well clearly this guy is due his comeuppance, because he has no idea that he's in a Sherlock Holmes story and therefore if you insult Holmes' intelligence you're for it.
Sorry, Lord Cantlemere. Do not pass go. Do not collect £200.
"I may tell you frankly, sir, that I have never been a believer in your powers, and that I have always been of the opinion that the matter was far safer in the hands of the regular police force. Your conduct confirms all my conclusions. I have the honour, sir, to wish you good-evening.”
Tumblr media
“Put your hand in the right-hand pocket of your overcoat.” “What do you mean, sir?” “Come—come, do what I ask.” An instant later the amazed peer was standing, blinking and stammering, with the great yellow stone on his shaking palm. “What! What! How is this, Mr. Holmes?” “Too bad, Lord Cantlemere, too bad!” cried Holmes. “My old friend here will tell you that I have an impish habit of practical joking. Also that I can never resist a dramatic situation. I took the liberty—the very great liberty, I admit—of putting the stone into your pocket at the beginning of our interview.”
Oh, Holmes. Always so hilarious with the practical jokes. This isn't as bad as pretending to be dead, or that time you invited a guy to eat with you, then hid something in his meal and he almost had a heart attack, but still... really? I know he insulted you and therefore needed his comeuppance, but still.
"Your sense of humour may, as you admit, be somewhat perverted, and its exhibition remarkably untimely..."
Tumblr media
OK then.
That was an odd one. Completely different structure. Third person POV. We got to see Holmes' methods in that we got to see him stage two pranks, essentially. There was little in the way of deduction.
Not sure about that one.
Weird case.

folklore lyrics and story: the 1
I can't even tell you how excited I am to dive into this iconic escapism album born of the early COVID lockdown days of depression, cat hair, endless TV, and maybe a little too much white wine.
the 1
youtube
I think Taylor is singing to a past version of herself in the 1. This version of herself was able to be openly out and about in NYC, going on dates with women she met on the internet (Karlie's tweet in 2013, anyone?) and maybe even decided to come out one day.
I imagine this as if Taylor was walking through her beautiful NYC neighborhood and saw someone who reminded her of her younger self, and this is the conversation she would have had with that version of herself if they had bumped into each other on the street.
In the song there is "me" (first person POV, this is the narrator) and "you" (someone else) and "we" (person one and person two).
The Taylor of Spring 2020 is "me," while the old Taylor who was allowed to live life in public with Karlie as besties back in the 1989 era is "you," and "we" is actually Taylor referring to her more comprehensive "self" - the amalgamation of all her past selves who led her to who she is today.
It's also important to look at the use of verb tenses in the song so we understand what happened when in this story. There's the present tense, talking about the here & now, and there is the past when "we" were still something.
I'm doing good, I'm on some new shit Been saying "yes" instead of "no" I thought I saw you at the bus stop, I didn't though
(Please, dear reader, I need you to know that I fully wrote these first two lyric sections THREE TIMES before they finally saved. F u tumblr drafts!! moving on...)
Taylor is catching up with this other person who she ran into maybe unexpectedly. The chat presumably starts out with pleasantries, to which Taylor responds "I'm doing good I'm on some new shit, I've been saying yes instead of no." Taylor gives the surface level, instant response of "doing good" and then expands to give the other person more information. Taylor is on some "new shit" and she's been saying yes instead of no. This new shit is probably her acknowledgement of yet another reinvention and a New Taylor. If this person knows Taylor well, they'll understand that she is regularly deciding who the newest version of her will be, always on her new shit!
Taylor describes a big change between the old and new her, which is that she is now saying yes instead of no. I think that means Taylor isn't automatically responding to everything unexpected or questioning with "no," she's not on defense anymore and isn't jumping straight to denial, deflect, defuse. Now, she's saying "yes" and allowing herself to be more open, vulnerable, and honest in her truth. She's probably trying new things that were once uncomfortable or scary for the old Taylor.
Taylor tells the person she's speaking to that she thought she saw them out one day (maybe at The Bus Stop in the West Village) and was a little let down to realize it wasn't actually them. This means that the current interaction is likely a positive, pleasant encounter.
I hit the ground running each night I hit the Sunday matinée You know the greatest films of all time were never made
Taylor hits the ground running each night. I think this line refers to Alice Merton's song Hit the Ground Running, which is ABOUT MERTON STARTING HER OWN RECORD LABEL.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today is August 15, 2023 and when Taylor Swift launches a fucking record label I want you all to know that I called it. Just for the record.
Also there is definitely more to dig into about Alice Melton, who has a ton of similarities and connections to Taylor Swift, but that's for another day. So Taylor updates this person about whatever it is she's working on professionally right now (karma is fucking real bitches).
Taylor also hits the Sunday Matinee. I think this refers to the candid photo collection published by Brooke Smith (aka Dr. Hahn on Grey's Anatomy) which illustrates the collective misfit nature of the punk rock community in the East Village in the 1980s. Specifically, this community thrived in THE BOWERY NEIGHBORHOOD. Brooke described the punk community as a bunch of disenfranchised kids who never really fit in and then found a welcoming family in punk.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So Taylor is also telling this person about how she's building her community and documenting it in photos right now. (Maybe flagging for the Long Pond Sessions? More Polaroid imagery?) I imagine her community members are Jack Antonoff, Aaron Dessner, Zoe Kravitz, Marcus Mumford, Bon Iver, and others in her music creating community throughout folkmore.
Next Taylor shares a knowing reflection with the other person, acknowledging a shared experience here. She says "you know, the greatest films of all time are never made," kind of in a "you know how it goes" kinda way. *shrugs*
I'm not sure exactly what she is referring to with the greatest films of all time line. Lina Naktine posits that the truly great films aren't made because of fear of profit loss. Great films take risks, and great film industry executives don't want to risk their bottom line to try something experimental or bold. So, even though incredible scripts are written and submitted for funding and development, they're never made. Following this thought process, Taylor is lamenting the fact that art and expression are limited by the oversight of big studios.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This line after the last two references of authentic, self-governing community in music and music rights, profits, and ownership in music labels hits really hard. Taylor is up to something big but she's playing it really casual as she catches up with this person.
I guess you never know, never know And if you wanted me, you really should've showed And if you never bleed, you're never gonna grow And it's alright now
Okay, so this is where we finally hear from the other person. They respond to Taylor, saying, "I guess you never know, and if you wanted me you really should've showed." The other person seems to disagree with Taylor's thoughts about the greatest films of all time never being made, they posit that they might eventually be made, you never know! This person goes on to acknowledge the elephant in the room: their history with Taylor.
Here's where my theory of who "you" is referring to is important. I think "you" is the version of Taylor from 1989 Girl Squad era of Taylor's life, if she had been able to keep that identity instead of reinventing herself for Reputation. So Taylor is talking to the carefree, single life that she lived in the early days of her NYC Lifestyle.
"And if you wanted me, you really should've showed." 1989 Taylor is acknowledging that present day Taylor wishes she hadn't lost 1989 Taylor's life, and 1989 Taylor tells her that if she really had wanted this life for herself, she should've showed her true (gay) colors back when she had the chance.
"And if you never bleed you're never gonna grow." 1989 Taylor criticizes Taylor here, pointing out her pattern of protecting herself from bleeding by cutting and running and reinventing herself anytime someone gets too close and feels potentially threatening.
"And it's alright now." I think this is as if 1989 Taylor has been living out & proud for the last 10 years and she's telling present day Taylor that everything she was afraid of happening turned out alright now.
But we were something, don't you think so? Roaring 20s, tossing pennies in the pool And if my wishes came true It would've been you In my defense, I have none For never leaving well enough alone But it would've been fun If you would've been the one (Ooh)
The POV changes again, Taylor of present day is speaking now! She's reflecting on the 1989 era of her life wistfully. Taylor reflects on those years of her life, her roaring 20s, the wishes she made tossing pennies in the pool. And she tells us that if the wishes she made in her best best friends era with Karlie had come true, she would've been 1989 era Taylor forever.
Taylor goes on to say, "in my defense, I have none" which means "in my defense, I am defenseless, I am vulnerable, I have no shield." And she is defenseless against "leaving well enough alone," implying that she messed with a perfectly good situation when it was well enough, and her interference is what caused the 1989 era to end.
She goes on to underscore her belief that it would've been fun to stay 1989 Taylor, dating the love of her life in plain sight under the sweet disguise of friendship.
I have this dream you're doing cool shit Having adventures on your own You meet some woman on the internet and take her home We never painted by the numbers, baby But we were making it count You know the greatest loves of all time are over now I guess you never know, never know And it's another day waking up alone
Taylor of today is now talking about and to 1989 Taylor. Present day Taylor has a dream that the 1989 Tay is doing cool shit, having adventures on her own, maybe she'd even be on the online dating apps and meet some stranger woman and take her home! Taylor dreams of having the ability to be in a normal, low-key, low-stakes relationship at this stage in her life, compared to the complications and heartache that go with a seven year long love affair while stuck in the closet.
Taylor keeps talking about how she behaved back in the day. This is now the "we" of the song- Taylor of the present is calling herself "we" when she thinks back to what the 1989 era was like, because both she and this grown up 1989 Taylor were both there. She says that they never painted by the numbers, but they were making it count - I think this means that they broke the rules back then and did things differently than people expected them to, but she reflects that the unusual way she did things back in ~2014 worked for her then.
"You know the greatest loves of all time are over now." Taylor of today tells 1989 Taylor that the greatest love story of all time (Karlie & Taylor) is over now, which implies that this conversation happens during a Kaylor breakup. Taylor adds a little hope into the discussion, bringing 1989 Taylor's words back around - I guess you never know if the greatest love is over now, it could be alive still, or it may come back around.
"And it's another day waking up alone." Taylor updates 1989 Tay on the current state of her life - she's waking up alone, no lover beside her in her bed.
I, I, I persist and resist the temptation to ask you If one thing had been different Would everything be different today?
Taylor of today is thinking to herself now, trying to keep herself strong and not ask the question she desperately wants to know the answer to: if ONE thing had been different, would everything be different today? If she had made one different decision in her life, would everything else have changed for the better or worse? I think she's thinking about The 1975 Kissgate ~event~ of December 4, 2014, or something else related to stepping out publicly with Karlie back when things were much simpler.
We were something, don't you think so? Rosé flowing with your chosen family And it would've been sweet If it could've been me In my defense, I have none For digging up the grave another time But it would've been fun If you would've been the one (Ooh)
Taylor ends up the conversation with her past self, again reflecting on the fun they had and lamenting the loss she feels when she thinks about this potential other life she could've lived. There was rosé flowing with her chosen family (gay!), and it would've been sweet if that version of herself could've stayed around as a long-term identity and persona.
She again states that she's defenseless against digging up the grave another time, which must be why she's alone now. But she can accept that things are different, daydream about what could've been, and eventually walk away from the one.
If you made it this far, THANK YOU!! I'd love to hear your feedback, your unhinged Taylor/Kaylor theories, and please send me any tie-ins you find that support or conflict with my analysis. Let's use those AP English Lit skills and be the DEAREST of readers.
XOXO, The Loudest Woman this town has ever seen

Semi-coherent self indulgent ramble about Edinburgh below, mostly because I forget things if I don’t record them somewhere - feel free to ignore…
- Within 10 minutes of getting off the train we spotted David O’Doherty, the first show we were seeing that night, I too loudly whispered ‘look, David O’Doherty, green bike helmet, oh my god’ and was instantly ashamed at having so little cool about that stuff although he either didn’t hear me or just convincingly acted that way - his show was fantastic, one of my favourites, I will always be excited to hear his ‘beefs’ song - shortly after the show while I was at the bar my friend saw him walk past with Josie Long, I was pretty relieved as I’m sure I would have started crying as I told her how much I loved her book
- Show 2: Frank Skinner, I wasn’t sure about this when we booked it, the audience demographic changed massively and it was a huge shift from lovely DO’D, he definitely flirted with some more ‘old school’ stuff about brexit but then moved away from the obvious jokes, enjoyable but not so much my thing, Russell Howard and David Baddiel were in the audience taking the comedian count up to 4
- Show 3: Simon Amstell was the last show of day 1 - very much a work in progress but enjoyed it, different again from the first 2 shows, we were talking to some people the next day who said they had seen him a few years ago and would never go again as he was so self involved, couldn’t argue with that so I suppose it comes down to if you like him in the first place?
- Day 2, show 1 was Daniel Kitson - just wonderful, he makes its look so easy, hard to talk about without going into the premise but so far removed from the work in progress show earlier in the year and I can’t wait to see it again once it’s ‘complete’
- Show 2: Tarot, another work in progress - I absolutely love them and was cackling like an idiot for the whole thing and can’t wait to see finished show, was accidentally too enthusiastic and got pulled into some very mild audience participation regarding Mr Blobby (and my brain just can’t do audience participation) pretty sure my response was shite but it didn’t even dent how much I loved it
- Show 3: Stuart Goldsmith - bang on the front row (at the side at least) good lord he has VERY twinkly eyes… also I think the first proper ‘themed’ show we saw, good but very strong competition based on earlier shows of the day
- Show 4: Last minute scarper to the next street over to see Stuart Laws, the first show where I hadn’t seen them before either live or on TV, great visual gag fairly early on. Really enjoyed it, more low quality audience participation from myself… decision taken not to sit on the front row again if I could help it
- Show 5: Nish Kumar was brilliant and I could have listened to him screaming about the government all night, also the loudest audience of the weekend and everyone in the room loved him. Ed Gamble was in the crowd and got some stick which was fun, it was billed as a work in progress but I wouldn’t have been surprised if it was unplanned and he just ranted for the whole hour
- Last show was an ‘All Stars’ show at the Udderbelly, booked mainly because we couldn’t get to see Chloe Petts’ main show - she was fantastic obviously - also loved Lara Ricote
- Day 3, show 1: Ed Gamble, brings out the mum vibes in me despite only being 5 years younger, I find myself thinking he’s a lovely young man, and so handsome too etc He was very funny despite the smell in the venue and the actual children in the crowd, have tickets for the tour next year and am hoping to see him walk onstage wearing his camping trousers
- Show 2: The same stinking venue (Hive 1) for Alison Spittle who took the step of spraying air freshener around the room, great segment where she made assumptions about people’s lives based on their favourite soups, the show was a last minute booking but fantastic
-Show 3: Paul Merton’s Impro Pals, we booked this based on our shared childhood love of watching him on Have I Got News For You, the friendly posh lady we sat next to told us she didn’t like it when comedy was political so we decided not mention how much we enjoyed Nish…it was fun but very ‘lite’ and we were ready to get shouted at by an angry Scottish man
- Show 4: Frankie Boyle, lots of shouting and calling people cunts, lots of his psychotic giggle, couple of what appeared to be walk outs but who knows really, he only heckled the blokes leaving the room which was interesting, took the Prince Andrew is a nonce joke count up by about 100 and loads of fun stuff about the royals which I enjoyed
- Show 5: Buffy Revamped - the only non-stand up show we saw but it was great fun, crowd was full of very enthusiastic people and some VERY drunk people but he handled them expertly
- Show 6: Ivo Graham - pretty chaotic and I’m not sure if it was because it started late or if that’s just the show/the man, regardless it was really fun and had a great audience participation angle that would have worked really really well if the show was extended over a couple of hours, still a great last show of the weekend
This was my first trip to Edinburgh and it was amazing, the bad stuff I had prepared for wasn’t as bad as expected (the crowds, the queuing etc) although it was obviously expensive and I doubt I could afford it every year, also it totally fried my brain so I’m spending the next week indoors and not talking to any other humans as much as possible
Disappointed not to have spotted a wild Watto and also guilty we couldn’t fit his show in, but I am going to see Search next month and have his book on pre-order so I hope that balances things out in the long-run (see also John Robins but with Howl later in the year and without the book) and I didn’t give up hope of a no more jockeys show until ludicrously late into the weekend
I think our comedian spotting skills were fairly poor - we also saw Paul Chowdry and Paul Williams (separately) out and about and then Amy Annette walking down the street with Nish and Ed after Nish’s show, but that’s it
Thus ends my ramble - pics of the stages etc on my equally ‘not of much interest to anyone but me’ shows I’ve been to blog @mylifeintickets

Good morning! I hope you slept well and feel rested? Currently sitting in my study, attired only in my blue towelling robe, enjoying my first cuppa of the day.
Welcome to the working week although, for those of you working in the NHS, welcome to just another day.
Friday night was amazing! Some of you will know why. My team didn’t play particularly well but we managed to get a good result and, for a few fleeting moments, we were top of the league again. Our next game is actually against the league leaders. That’s when the season begins. That’s when we’ll know what we’re dealing with. Some big teams lost over the weekend, so I’m not complaining.
Many thanks to everyone that listened to ‘The A-Z Of Mi-Soul Music’ live or listened to the recording on Mixcloud. It was a really good show full of all sorts of gems and you know I love variety! I’m away for Saturday, September 16th, so The Letter R begins on September 23rd. Many thanks to Marcia Haynes G-Champion for being the executive producer on Part One. Before that, this coming Saturday, we have one week of The Letter Q, which is a cracking show full of mind-blowing randomness.
Straight after the show, we were round the M25 and down the M23. Saturday night supper was Lady Wesker, The Trouble and I, plus two very old family friends: Ahmet The Turk and Baby Ben from Santa Monica. In a room full of such worldly storytellers, I just shut my gob and listened!
On Sunday morning, we didn’t have big fry-up as we were going for lunch, so we ate toasted bagels, cream cheese and smoked salmon which, as you know, is a fairly perfect way to start the day.
As it was such a beautiful day, there was no way I was passing up the chance to walk down to the sea! T-shirt got proper sticky! There were a lot of people in the sea (not me!) The promenade was full of runners, walkers and skaters. I recorded a quick piece for TikTok then walked back up The Avenue.
Mum loves Sunday lunch at a classy restaurant called The Ginger Fox in Hassocks, so we went and celebrated Baby Ben’s birthday there. It looked so good, they wanted me to take photos of their food! I told them, “That is SO last decade!”
After all that grub, I was wiped out and took a lovely Sunday afternoon nap while The Trouble watched Catherine Cookson (perfect trashy Sunday fare!)
We had to drop Baby Ben to his hotel in Baker Street, so we went to the end of the M23 and through London. What a bloody long and winding road! Yes, we did the whole Wallington, Coulsdon, Merton, Mitcham, Tooting, Battersea route! So many traffic lights, temporary traffic lights, confusing road markings and so many bloody cars! Get off the bloody road, ain’t cha got homes to go to! Almost lost the will to live! Yes, I drove past where you live but – I’m sorry – I couldn’t stop!
Today, I’ll be marking as many assignments as I can because, tomorrow, I will be out all day! Gordon Mac and @Paul ‘Trouble’ Anderson are being honoured on the Camden Music Walk Of Fame, then there’s an exclusive shindig afterwards, where former Kiss FM DJs (including me) will be spinning some original pirate stylee tunes! You will have to forgive me if I go into selfie overdrive!
Hope your week goes well? I shall be saying my atheist prayers for you. Have a marvellous and momentous Monday. I love you all.

Tag People You Want To Know Better!
Tagged by @corpocyborg--Thank you! 💙
Favorite Color: It kinda varies depending on context. Like most of my clothes are black or dark earth or jewel tones. My home office has a lot of mint green accents. Obviously I have a fondness for blue. 💙
Currently Reading: Just started Neuromancer by William Gibson
Last Song: Oh, man, I have no idea. Would have been something from my workout yesterday. Lash Out by Alice Merton, maybe?
Last Movie: John Wick 2
Last Series: Current show? Watching S4 of Succession. Also alternating between rewatching Better Call Saul and Roswell while being a bum playing Stardew Valley in bed
Sweet, Savory, or Spicy: Savory all the way. Love those salty, umami, rich flavors.
Craving: The weekend, lmao. Work has been exceptionally dreary and unfulfilling this week.
Tea or Coffee: Depends--I like a cup of kava tea before bed or ginger tea if my tummy is upsetty, but for a delicious pick-me-up? Coffee all the way. And I do drink more coffee than tea.
Currently Working On: In terms of creative stuff, I'm taking it easy. I try not to fight my natural ebb and flow of creativity, and right now just letting my brain recharge and process some stuff feels like what I need at the moment.
I do have some shots to edit, and I've wanted to do story sets for Goro and Valerie to cover events (both revisions of canon and totally new stuff) from the landfill to Down on the Street, so I think that's probably where I'll pick up again when I'm ready. Also been having the urge to do some traditional art--Some of that might be coming up soon, too.
Tagging @corphoe, @shadesofchaoticenergy, @valsilverhand, @theviridianbunny, and @wraithcaller 💙

The Merton Plaque: a plaque showing Nicholas Breakspear, Henry III and Saint Thomas Becket in front of Merton Priory; an English Augustinian priory founded in 1114 by Gilbert Norman, Sheriff of Surrey under King Henry I (1100–1135). It was situated within the manor of Merton in the county of Surrey, in what is today the Colliers Wood area in the London Borough of Merton.
The priory buildings were situated within the Diocese of Winchester (now in the Diocese of Southwark), at the point where the River Wandle was crossed by Stane Street (the Roman road to Chichester), about 10 kilometres outside the City of London. It held cultivated land and pastures there and at other places in Surrey, and held manors and other lands elsewhere in England, including Teign (Canons' Teign) in Devon.
By 1117 the foundation had been colonised by Canons Regular from the Augustinian priory at Huntingdon, and re-sited in Merton, close to the Wandle, where it became an important centre of learning and diplomacy, Thomas Becket briefly studied there around 1130, and later was given to wearing the habit of a Merton canon; as was a successor of his, Hubert Walter.
It's thought that Walter de Merton also studied there in the 1230s. He established a house for Merton scholars in Old Malden, and this was eventually moved to Oxford, becoming Merton College.
Edmond Rich wrote some of his Oxford lectures in the peace of the Priory. In 1205, King John sent a canon of Merton as an ambassador to Normandy, and Prince Lois of France did penance there after a series of peace conferences culminating in the Treaty of Lambeth in 1217.
In 1236 King Henry III held a Parliament at the Priory at which the Statute of Merton was passed, allowing, amongst other matters, lords of the manor to enclose common land, provided that sufficient pasture remained for their tenants. This was the first recorded statute of the first recorded English parliament.
On November 1, 1437, shortly before his 16th birthday, Henry VI had a crowning ceremony at Merton Priory; although the exact nature of this is unclear.
The Priory was demolished in 1538, following King Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries. having been valued in the Valor Ecclesiasticus of 1535 at a relatively high sum of £960 16 shillings 6 pence. John Bowles (alias John Ramsey: a Canon of Windsor from 1557 to 1558) surrendered the monastery on April 16, 1538. Much of the masonry was reused at the king's Nonsuch Palace.
The site of the Priory is now occupied by the Merton branch of Sainsbury's: a supermarket chain. Remains of the Chapter House are now a museum under Merantun Way, between Sainsbury's and Merton Abbey Mills.
