i don't think the decision to make benders an oppressed class was necessarily bad, but the way they did it made 0 sense bc nothing backed it up. like lok seemed like it wanted to make it like benders fill most the roles of society and are perceived inherently better but like.. we never really got any examples of that besides throwaway scenes and then those are kinda brushed away with a whole other scene where that concept just doesn't exist. it could've been super interesting but lok just. fucked it up. and it wouldn't have been too hard to express this inequality either but they just didn't put much thought into it as they should have. i think a lot of the concepts that main villains stand for in lok are not very fleshed out and that's one of loks failures. i mean ik it was only meant to be one season but inequality doesn't just.. vanish overnight, and every season each problem before that kind of went poof

it's not that benders weren't shown to have enough power to warrant a "nonbenders as the oppressed" narrative, it's that nonbenders were explicitly shown to be exploiting benders. because benders are exploited by the nonbender ruling class, benders are also associated with crime (due to the intrinsic link btwn poverty & criminalization) and thus easily scapegoated by nonbenders who are dissatisfied with their society and eat up amon's propaganda that it is benders who are the ones exploiting them. but for some reason, they also had the conflict go both ways, wherein nonbenders are also shown to be oppressed by the earthbending police force, and when a nonbender is elected president it is implied to a marker of progress, despite the fact that plenty of world leaders and wealthy/influential political players in avatar are nonbenders.

so like, is this a commentary on criminalized, exploited, and scapegoated underclasses who are deemed dangerous and vilified by those in power to distract from the real issues (like black ppl, jews) or was amon actually right... despite the show's explicit evidence to the contrary? they were trying to have their cake and eat it too, because they somehow couldn't decide whether benders or nonbenders should be the oppressors in this plotline. when of course, if they had simply followed the precedent that atla established, they would have realized that it was never a conflict between benders and nonbenders, but rather between colonizers and the colonized.

But never forget that the system is rigged, so find a way to acknowledge that but ALSO, always be grateful!

You have to never get old. Never be rude. Never show off. Never be selfish. Never fall down. Never fail. Never show fear. Never get OUT OF LINE. It's too hard! It's too contradictory, and nobody gives you a medal or says 'thank you!' And it turns out, in fact, that not only are you doing everything wrong, but also, everything is your fault.

just found out my cousin (who lives in England) is in the art department of a bunch of shows??? And she worked oN DOCTOR WHO? AND HAD LUNCH WITH DAVID TENNANT???? and she just told me so casually because she's interested in the art, not the show? I mean, excuse me? She worked on SHERLOCK???? FOR A WHOLE SEASON?? She worked on Peaky Blinders and Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones??? And probably other things because she has a shitty memory and according to her everything is a blur?? AND AT ONE POINT SHE WAS LIKE: "oh and have you ever heard of Neil Gaiman?" And I was trying not to scream, because yes, of course I've heard of Neil, he's only my favorite author, I've only read like all of his books multiple times, and if you say you worked on Good Omens or the Sandman I'm going to lose it completely. So I said "yeah I've read a couple of his books," -you know, like a liar- "what about him?" and she goes "well I worked on one of his shows and he's brilliant i just can't remember which one" and i go "w-what do you mean he's brilliant? You're.. you're talking about his writing... his writing is brilliant, right?" And she cheerfully says "oh no I don't read books, I ment he was really nice and brilliant when I talked to him" and i go "WHAT DID YOU TALK ABOUT WHAT DID YOU TALK ABOUT" and she thinks for a moment and goes "oh! Friendly reminder that Percy jackson - our beloved silly adorable seaweed brain - is absolutely terrifying. When he’s angry, when he’s scared, when he’s on edge - he’s not warm and fuzzy.

No other character gets that reaction from people. Jason (the sweetie) is perceived as calm and in control, nico (our favorite self-outcasted outcast) is perceived as solemn and creepy, reyna (girlboss queen slay) is perceived as confident and assertive, and annabeth (our girl) is perceived as fierce, clever, and formidable. They are all intimidating to an extent.

But not like Percy. No. Becasue even when he’s at ease, he’s described as wild and disobedient. And when he’s not at ease, even if just little bit, he’s perceived as powerful, dangerous, and scary. Someone who NOBODY wants to mess with. Nobody even questions his power. One look from him has literal gangs running the other way. One look from him has Leo so scared that he’s literally shaking, and feeling the same innate fright and alarm that he does when jason summons an ear-piercing, earth-shaking, deadly bolt of lighting.

like… HELLO??? can we all just sit on that for a moment?? good lord

One angry look from percy has people thinking one thing: Run.

Percy is, canonically, the character that people find the most frightening and intimidating.

And unless he’s in a good mood - which you better hope he is - the reality is that most of us would be completely terrified of him if we met him.
