Ever wonder why Hol Horse is one of the only JoJo characters with the specific SFX 「メギャン」 (me-gyan)?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Me too, me too.
(I'm not an expert in Japanese expressional words, let alone its manga SFX, so take this with a spoonful of salt)
I assume "me-gyan" is a mix of "meki" and "kyan". "Meki" is the sound of something "ripping out", like a tree growing out of the ground at rapid speed. "Kyan" can be two things - a squeal or a wolf's cry.
At this point...it's safe to say that a high pitch, cracking howl is what Emperor literally sounds like when it "rips itself out" of Hol's hand. The manga and anime didn't show this, obviously. Just Emperor phasing in and out from Hol's hand with a synth sound...
But the OVA literally did show the ripping out part (which is kinda scary, tbh...to have a gun rip out of one's arm like some Kazuo Umezu story).
Tumblr media
Which makes OVA Hol Horse even cooler, btw.
For a minor character to have a very memorable SFX assigned to him, shows how much Araki actually cared for Hol Horse. He just never had the capacity to expand him during SDC's run. But, from Hol, we were given Gyro (a better Hol Horse, according to the man himself) so that's good.

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one in this fandom not obsessed with Peddie. Like I still low key ship them, but the only ship from HOA that's stuck in my head since the show ended is Fabina. But everyone's loosing their minds over Peddie. I'm not complaining per say, but I don't know. I don't really know what the point of this post was. Maybe I am complaining, just a little. Not sure what exactly I'm complaining about. Maybe that I can't participate really in the conversations, because I don't really care? Which would be a me problem, and no one else's fault. Like I'm not upset that there isn't for Fabina conversation. But I want more non-peddie conversation? Or more non-shipping conversation in general?

So with Link being able to wear the Yiga armor, it actually tells us something about what the Yiga clan members look like under their suits. Notice Link's ponytail?
Tumblr media
Link's blond hair is peeking up under the top, which suggests that on the other Yiga clan members, that tuft of black hair on top of their heads is not actually a part of their masks but rather their actual hair.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is interesting to me because, since we know Dorian (a former Yiga clan member who defected back to the Shiekah) has white hair, it suggests they all dye their hair black to differentiate themselves from their Shiekah counterparts. Small but very neat little piece of world building!!!

i fully expect to see the revenge actually catch fire, because it’s a recurring joke that it’s a deeply impractical fire hazard. but i also fully expect it to survive, because ed threw most of that fire hazard shit overboard, and because stede replaced at least some of the ship’s gunpowder with fucking marmalade, and because if the cherry mast is anything to go by, the revenge is actually made out of very strong, dense wood, which generally takes longer to burn

Still contemplating writing something about Tt, Rachel, Alec, and Blake and what they say for Wildbow’s works view on homelessness. Not sure what the answer is, other than, “it’s okay if you’re homeless because your family sucks but never do drugs or you’re a subhuman degenerate.”

Is it me or is Porsche not comfortable with PDA!! Maybe a little reserved when it comes to showing affection towards Kinn in front of other people because this is his first real relationship. Just wanted to know your thoughts on the matter 🙏
I don’t think it’s the PDA so much as the rapid shift from one role to another. Porsche was already adjusting to being openly queer in public, getting comfortable holding Kinn’s hand and just generally being with a man for the first time. And that’s a big thing mentally, even for someone like Porsche who went through his bi awakening with relatively little panic or fear and hasn’t really shown much internalized homophobia beyond, like, the inevitable bare bones heteronormativity that plagues even the gayest of us from birth.
So he’s just barely starting to settle into dating Kinn in private when a) Tawan comes along and throws a wrench in their relationship and then b) Chay lays out an ultimatum that forces him to either leave Kinn completely or make their relationship public and hope it doesn’t blow up in their faces. Obviously he chooses the latter and obviously it goes pretty well all things considered, but that doesn’t mean he was prepared for what came after.
Being Kinn’s bodyguard by day and secret lover by night is already a a huge mental maze for Porsche, who comes from a totally different class and background, is still new to the mafia world, is still new to being queer and (somewhat) out of the closet, etc etc.
I honestly doubt he ever seriously considered the possibility of a long-term relationship with Kinn. Not because he doesn’t want it or because he doesn’t love him (he does very much), but because Porsche has never had the luxury of thinking more than a few days or months ahead. He’s spent his life scrambling just to keep up, to provide for Chay and avoid trouble and basically just survive day-to-day. When you look back on how he talked about his bar on the beach dream in ep 6, it’s paralleling Kinn. Kinn’s dream of being a singer is beyond far-fetched; it’s completely impossible. His position, his family, the mafia complex itself, won’t allow for that kind of individualistic ambition. So when Porsche shares his own dream, for him it carries that same weight. It’s a fantasy, one he has no actual hope of ever making reality. He sees it as equally impossible as Kinn’s dream.
Porsche is so used to just, like, existing and trying to figure out what happens tomorrow that thinking of “the future” probably hasn’t occurred to him past a certain point. Based on his reaction to Tawan, part of me wonders if he viewed himself as something temporary in Kinn’s life, someone he’d inevitably replace with a man who could be his equal and his partner. Someone like Tawan for example, who (aside from his obviously wack personality) was clever, cunning, worldly, charming, and most importantly fit perfectly into Kinn’s life.
Porsche doesn’t think he fits, even if he knows Kinn loves him. So to suddenly switch from this secret, temporary relationship to something much more public and permanent must be a huge adjustment. He’s gone from being at the very bottom of the mafia food chain to standing right next to the top. Now his identity isn’t “bodyguard” and “lover” - it’s solely “Kinn’s boyfriend.” He doesn’t even have a job now (which I imagine would be nerve-wracking because what happens if they break up?). He’s become a fixture in Kinn’s life overnight in front of their families, friends, and extended circles, and that’s a lot to deal with mentally no matter how much he loves Kinn and wants to be with him.
So no, personally I don’t think it’s the PDA itself that Porsche is uncomfortable with per se. I think it’s more about what the PDA represents - commitment to Kinn, to the mafia, and to a future with both. It never occurred to him to plan for any of that, and now he’s pretty much signed his name on the dotted line. That’s a lot to come to terms with imo.

I think something fucked about Ninjago is how like...Lloyd had a good relationship with his dad. Garmadon was a good dad when he could be, even when he was evil. And while I can see how there can be some resentment for Garm not really being around, he still tried to be a dad when he was around. Then SoG happened and that all went out the window. Now Lloyd's resentful because now his dad is trying to kill him, but even then that kinda wasn't Garmadon's fault since he was sorta zombie-ish and didn't remember much but too bad because Lloyd is understandably traumatized now. Wish we got more discussion of this. The conflict that Lloyd KNOWS Garmadon can be/was a good dad but now he's just too fucked up from what Harumi did and the horror of who Garmadon is now because of her. Because now I feel like a lot of the focus is on "I don't want to be like my dad," which is completely understandable, but there's also this whole other layer of remembering the good times and knowing that's gone now and that's gotta be absolutely fucked???

the fact that Garou demanded to be killed after his dream had been crushed still haunts me man. the value he sees himself having is basically zero, and in fact he believes that outside of being able to establish world peace for everyone else via his peculiar ambitions, he is not particularly attached nor reverent of his life, let alone does he seem aware that he is allowed to want happiness for himself outside of wanting to fix others

One of the things I love about That 70s’ Show is that the genuine laughter sounds so in character. For example, Jackie giggling her way through explains to Donna how she thought the redhead was bitch (or goon, can’t remember now). And when Donna yells “what?!”, Jackie laughs at her oversight and asks, horrified, “wait, have I not told you about this?”
Another really good example is Red bursting out in laughter when he’s explaining to Eric how to tell Donna about killing her cat. He cracks up, then completely deadpans, “but say it without the laughter.”
What I’m trying to say is, the writers let the actors have fun. They let a little bit of Kurtwood, Debra Jo, Topher, Laura, Mila, Danny, Ashton, and Wilmer come into the fictional characters they portrayed. And I just gotta say that is how you make a tv show. Until season eight

Shower thoughts:
Murata / ONE regularly state that a hero’s primary job is to 1) be kind and 2) keep children safe
Hero Association: hires children. 🤔 also seems to have a toxic culture + a lot of workplace bullying
But mostly, I feel bad for Child Emperor (also Metal Bat and Genos, but mostly CE because he’s so young)

So I just bought the latest JoJo magazine. Haven't read it thoroughly yet but there's a lot of stuff on Part 3-6 which is kinda cool. But I'm kinda reminded from the book that Polnareff was born in 1964. Should he be alive in 2024, he'd be 60 years old.
But it makes me wonder how old Hol Horse actually is.
He never had an official birth year, like the main characters in SDC, so we can only assume by his background, which, unfortunately, we don't have that either.
(whatever past this point is just what I got from a few hours of reading, so apologies dear curators of history and translators of CDDH if they are not accurate...)
While I haven't finished the Crazy Heartbreakers novel yet, I'm just gonna use that as the basis for Hol Horse's background, canon or not. So we go with the fan translation that Hol Horse originated from an "Eastern European country that had ceased to exist in 1999". Meaning, he was most likely born in Czechslovakia, Yugoslavia or East Germany of the Eastern Bloc, between 1950-1970.
What's interesting about these three no-longer-existed nations is that they were famous for Osterns i.e. Eastern European Western cowboy films. Osterns that were exact replicas of Spaghetti Westerns most likely started with Yugoslavia's Winnetou (1963), and Czechslovakia's Lemonade Joe (1964). Additionally, two famous non-Soviet cowboy films that were allowed screening in the Eastern Bloc were Magnificient Seven (1960) and Gold (1969). I'm omitting East Germany cowboy films at this point since most of them tell the Western stories from the Red Indian's perspective.
So it's safe to say that Hol Horse, who stole time to watch a cowboy film in the cinema that inspired his cowboy persona, must have been a child between 1960 and 1969. Assuming that movies at that time had no age ratings, and that age 4 is the average minimum for one to be allowed to enter a cinema, Hol Horse could have been born anytime between 1956 and 1965.
Taking the samples of the famous Osterns and Westerns listed that tell a tale of a skilled gunslinger in a typical spaghetti cowboy setting who became an unexpected hero and saved the fair maiden by the end of the film, only one truly stood out: Lemonade Joe.
Lemonade Joe is a satirical cowboy film that tells the story of a lone cowboy and skilled gunslinger named Lemonade Joe, who loves a non-alcoholic soda called Kolaloka (sounds almost like Locacaca, doesn't it?). Using his gunfighting skills, he convinced a town to embrace the soda and stop consuming alcohol, while also courting the daughter of a missionary.
What I found most interesting is that another name for this film is "The Horse Opera."
Now, I don't know if Araki or Kadono (the writer of CDDH) ever found inspiration from this film. This is purely on the assumption that our beloved Hol is just a goofy yet capable cowboy that suits the satire genre so well.
So! Assuming that this was probably one of the many films that inspired our Hol to be the cowboy he was meant to be (and also inspired his Stand), since Lemonade Joe was screened in 1964, we can then assume that Hol most likely was born in 1960. Which makes him the same age as Avdol. And also makes him at the ripe age of 39 during the CDDH's run.
He's definitely old. But still the best cowboy in JoJo ♥

If I could make one change to season 6 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer - just one - I would have Giles leaving be directly related to this new threat from The First. Someone in the Council, someone in some coven Giles once interacted with, someone in Giles’ world, recognizes the signs of a growing powerful evil. Reads the portents about wiping out the Slayer line, and contacts the only person with an existing relationship to an active Slayer.
Giles, having just gotten Buffy back, would have moved hell and high water to keep her safe and alive. He would have to leave to track down the information; he would have to leave to speak to the Council directly and get access to their texts. He would have to leave to gather potential slayers from their watchers, who hadn’t seen the signs and wouldn’t believe him if he told them. Giles, so desperate to keep his Slayer safe, he ends up with a veritable passel of scared children, with different backgrounds and needs, so he can’t come back frequently. His funds are tied into getting the next bit of information, cloaking the potentials he does track down, and moving from place to place.
It would nicely tie in with season 7, and would give Giles a legitimate reason for leaving Buffy on her own. Because one of the flaws with Buffy the Vampire Slayer is how many times men make decisions for Buffy and how the show doesn’t allow her real space and range to rage against it. Amending Giles’ reasoning to one that still allows Anthony Stewart Head to leave the show (everything Giles has been doing can be flashbacks, or letters back home, or any combination of things) also gives space for someone - an adult someone - to still be in Buffy’s corner and still looking out for her well being, even if he can’t physically be in Sunnydale. Because otherwise, he’s just left a bunch of traumatized teens to 20 year olds to fend for themselves with no community or guidance. Because otherwise, Giles leaves a traumatized and broke 20 year old who is the guardian of a traumatized 15 year old, because she won’t grow if he’s there. As if Buffy can grow without someone cutting back the bullshit in her life long enough for her to catch her breath. As if any of them can in season 6. Giles leaving with the promise of his intention to return, Giles leaving because there is a threat to Buffy and the world on the horizon so great he can’t stay - that’s good storytelling in line with Giles from the WB years.

I dont like the habit of bringing dead characters back. Or the expectation that a dead character will come back.
Don't get me wrong, I love tech and I hated when he died, but the intensity of those feelings are what made the moment so good! If I watch that and immediately think that they'll bring him back, that robs his death of its weight. All of a sudden it's a speed bump instead of road spikes. You stop feeling the grief because you know it will be temporary, they couldn't possibly kill off my fave character! But that's the point, Tech was an incredible character, loved by all, his death should be heartbreaking. And it should be treated like what it is, like a death. Tech died, and that isn't a mistake. That isn't an error on the part of the writers, something to be taken away next season. That was purposeful, intentional, meaningful, excellent.
Tech died so that others could live. He understood if he kept trying to get back on board the tram, the Batch would fall with him or be gunned down. He understood the necessary sacrifice. And tech didn't know if the Batch would make it off planet, all he knew was that executing plan 99 would extend their lives for another couple of minutes.
Fives was killed by Senate guards after capturing Rex and Anakin. He knew the danger of releasing his position, that he would be captured at least and, well, killed. But he did so anyway, knowing that the information he had, what he found out, if he could tell someone who would trust him about what he knew, then maybe, just maybe, the 501st would be warned, would be able to remove the chips, would be able to save themselves and the Jedi around them. And when he died, he died. He was deceased, no doubt about it. And TCW let him die, because they knew his sacrifice would live on for him, that his hard work would pay off.
And tech's death did pay off, the Batch were captured but they are not dead.
Let him die, it's better for him.
Let the Jedi die too. We don't need every Jedi to have survived Order 66, it robs the event of its finality, the grief we felt seeing the clones, our friends, our allies, turn on the Jedi in a moment, fire upon the generals they had been supporting a breath earlier.
If nobody dies, then nobody's sacrifice will have sacrificed anything.

Thinking about how episodes like Sky Witch/Varmints/Broke His Crown and even Red Starved show us this really solid, familiar, well-rehearsed team dynamic that pb & marcy have when they work together and how that always involves a level of teasing and bickering but also so much care and affection and just a deep fundamental understanding of each other’s needs beneath that.
And how both the flashback and the present in Obsidian are examples of how when the mission hits too close to home or challenges them in especially sensitive areas (I maintain that flashback and present events in Obsidian hit them BOTH right in the childhood trauma) they can take it too far and push each other in ways that really hurt without knowing the depth of what they’re doing. Like, y’know, the kind of thing that happens sometimes in all healthy relationships.
The difference is that in the present day of Obsidian they both have a little more insight into themselves and are able to separate their own pain and insecurities from the other’s a little more after some time to process alone, and their second trip to the Glass Kingdom helps them both grow even further in that area.
I think (and hope I’m right in saying so because what do I know) that they have such a realistic relationship and their communication is so evident in their actions, even though we don’t often see those conversations actually happen on screen.
They aren’t perfect! and I don’t think being in a healthy, (mostly) happy, loving relationship takes anything away from their characters OR from their cool weird edgy mad scientist overlord X chaotic demon vampire vibe.

hi this is the same anon who sent an ask about charlie bone a little bit ago. i just felt the need to mention like. in the first book scene where dr tolly's voice from the robot dog is giving exposition, tolly mentions manfred was there when he gave emma to the bloors. but he says manfred was like eight years old. like an eight year old child was fully doing evil hypnotism. like wow he is so fucked up.
He is SO fucked up anon! in fact a lot of stuff in COTRK is extremely fucked up and you don't even realise the extent of it as a kid hahaha
And Manfred? Gosh i want to open his brain and look inside. Here is a guy who is written as the most stereotypical of unsympathetic (almost cartoonish) bullies/villains, which instantly makes me want to woobify him. He has strong poor little meow meow energy fr.
And the thing about the endowed especially, is that it's heavily implied that their morality is dictated more by nature than nurture. Some of them are clearly "born evil", and it's largely genetic. Regardless of this, I could have an absolute field day trying to make all sorts of excuses for Manfred's awful behaviour and personality based on some deep trauma (invented by me) that caused him to be the way he is, and that maybe with some good influence he could turn out okay.
Regarding his gift, hypnotism is something largely regarded as suspicious or even evil, bit i think he could put it to good use as treatment for anxiety or other disorders.
