Hey, do you have suggestions on a stealthy, shoot'n'scoot build for the Pegasus? I'm really, really new, but I like the idea of this thing that can always hit you and fades away until the next attack.
-- HORUS Pegasus @ LL6 -- [ LICENSES ] HORUS Pegasus 3, SSC Metalmark 3 [ CORE BONUSES ] Overpower Caliber, The Lesson of the Open Door [ TALENTS ] Infiltrator 3, Skirmisher 3, Crack Shot 3 [ STATS ] HULL:2 AGI:2 SYS:0 ENGI:4 STRUCTURE:4 HP:17 ARMOR:0 STRESS:4 HEATCAP:10 REPAIR:4 TECH ATK:+1 LIMITED:+2 SPD:5 EVA:10 EDEF:10 SENSE:10 SAVE:15 [ WEAPONS ] FLEX MOUNT: Smartgun FLEX MOUNT: Smartgun HEAVY MOUNT: Anti-Materiel Rifle // Overpower Caliber [ SYSTEMS ] Personalizations, Active Camouflage, Pattern-A Smoke Charges x5
So this is a very simple build.
What we're doing here is creeping around the edges of the battlefield, looking for a good opening. We use our Active Camouflage to remain Hidden even when it isn't our turn, and we look for a good firing position.
Our ideal turn start has us Hidden and in hard cover. We activate Crack Shot protocol and Active Camouflage if our heat's looking okay, line up on our intended target and shoot them with the AMR, hopefully hitting and hopefully critting. We don't bother rolling dice for our AMR - we just use By The Way, I Know Everything to set our damage to 11, or 14 if we crit. Having hit an enemy with an attack from Hidden, we proc Ambush, plus Watch This if we crit. With Lesson of the Open Door buffing our Save Target, we're well-positioned to inflict a horrid array of status effects on our target.
That was our first quick action. We spend the next quick action to Hide again, rendering us untargetable.
Next turn, Immobilized from Crack Shot goes away and we only need to keep Active Camouflage up if we're in immediate danger. We have various options:
If we want supreme mobility (or if there's someone close to us) we can exploit the extra movement from Mastermind: using Boost breaks Hidden after it resolves, so we can Boost, use the slide from Mastermind and then move normally, allowing us to move up to 15 spaces, 5 of it reactionless. If we're feeling really spicy, we could even Boost adjacent to an enemy, use the flashbomb clause of Mastermind and then run 10 away from them.
We can Skirmish with a Smartgun and proc all the same effects as last turn. If we want to apply more damage and don't need to be Hidden next turn, we can even Barrage with both.
Occasionally we'll need to Stabilize to deal with the heat build up from Active Camouflage, but that's great because it also allows us to reload our AMR.
This mech only has 17 HP, so with 0 Armor and 10 Evasion its survivability is fairly low, but this is aided by the fact that it spends most of its time Invisible, and due to the absurd range of its AMR (and the fact that its Smartguns don't even need line of sight) it often won't even be in range for enemies to hit at all. Skirmisher III also means that the first reaction attack taken against us each round will miss automatically, and if we're smart, enemies won't get an opportunity to make a second one.
The largest dangers to this build:
Enemies that have AoE attacks and thus they can get around their inability to target you by targetting an area that they think contains you, although Invisible will still protect you from this by providing a 50% miss chance. In particular, Bombards can just dispense with trying to narrow down your location and shell your entire zipcode instead.
Enemies with abilities that deal damage but aren't attacks. This completely bypasses Invisibility, and since this sort of ability tends to be AoE, they can also ignore Hidden if they have a reasonable idea of where you are. A great example is the Assault's optional Micro-Missile Barrage trait.
Enemies that are themselves also Invisible. Because we have no Reliable damage and there wasn't room on this mech for Eye of Horus, we have no reliable way of penetrating Invisible. This means our ability to engage with such enemies are completely at the mercy of the dice.
SCOUTS. They ignore Hidden and Invisible entirely, and have multiple tools that strip Hidden and Invisible from us, completely negating the main survivability tools of our build. Worse, they have excellent Evasion, decent E-Defence and can become Invisible themselves. Prioritize their destruction, or better yet - get your allies to do it.

what's your favorite bug and why
bhjbcbcdskcbsdhb bugs!!!!! my bad i got very excited for a moment here.
my favorites are moths - especially the io moth and the metalmark moth - and centipedes / millipedes!!
for the latter two. i used to see a bunch of centipedes when i was a kid and i would spend sooo long just watching them, so in the end i just- latched onto them i guess. centipedes and millipedes are pretty similar ig, with the main differences being their diet and the way their legs are positioned (millipedes have two pairs of legs per segment, centipedes have one pair only)
also really interestingly- neither centipedes nor millipedes have an exact number of legs. so nope, you won't find one-hundred legs or one-thousand legs on these bad boys but also. centipedes can regrow their legs!! if you find one missing some, it's probably that they lost it from an attack and are waiting for it to come back
oh but there's more because i could also talk about the ways they protect themselves from threats!! centipedes have long legs so they can move fast, so their defense mechanism is just- to smell extremely bad. millipedes are slow so instead they just curl up in a ball. i just think they're fascinating and i love creepy-crawlies <3
there's sooo many species of moths and all of them are just- really interesting?? i guess? it's kind of hard for me to explain why they're my favorites because they just. are. the io moth has roots in greek mythology (which was one of my old interests) and the metalmark moth is really cool because it imitates a jumping spider to protect itself (and i also love spiders)
mimicry (^imitating another organism) is one of the most interesting thing in nature imo, i could also talk about it for super long
anyway i dont know if my word vomit is a good answer to the original question bc i went insanen but thank you sm for asking!!!!

Smithsonian Rock and Gem Dig Kits and Smithsonian Amber Dig Kit
I got some Smithsonian dig kits recently, the small and large rock dig kits and the simulated things preserved in amber kit, so here are my thoughts on all them:
First off, the small rock and gem dig kit:
You get six rocks in a block of sand, a little poster with all the possible rocks or gems you can get, a little baggy for your rocks, and a wooden hammer and chisel.
Tumblr media
Of all the rocks that could've been included, I got aventurine, fluorite, amethyst, black onyx, red aventurine, and agate.
The rocks in this kit were very small and concentrated in a small part of the block, so you spend a while trying to find where the rocks are, and don't really get super substantial pieces out of it. The block was very hard and the chisel was blunt, so it was difficult to actually get the block to chip(this kits main target audience is kids, so I can see kids having a really hard time with it.)
Overall, this kit wasn't really worth it, it was a lot of work for a not-very-substantial product, but I am happy with what I got out of it.
The next kit is the large rock and gem dig kit:
You get a big poster with all the rocks and gems you can get, 11 rocks in a block of sand, a little bag for your rocks, a wooden hammer and chisel, a magnifying glass, a streak plate, and safety goggles.
Tumblr media
The sand block in this kit had the Smithsonian logo stamped into it, which was pretty cool.
Tumblr media
I got sodalite, aventurine, tigers eye, rock crystal, 3 agates, fluorite, red aventurine, mahogany obsidian, and a mysterious clear rock with some red in it that I'm not quite sure what it is. It says it comes with 11, but they gave me an extra, so that was cool.
Like with the last kit, the rocks are much smaller than what is pictured on the packaging, all concentrated in one spot, the sand block is very hard, and the chisel isn't really sharp enough to break the block effectively. They also mention in the instructions that you should brush your rocks off as you dig them out, but the kit doesn't include a brush. It was neat that the kit included a streak plate, but non of the stones included are ones that leave streaks, so it's kind of useless within the kit. There was also a lot of empty space in the package.
Finally, the simulated things preserved in amber dig kit:
This kit came with a pair of safety goggles, a magnifying glass, a block of sand that contains six simulated amber preserved things, a brush, a poster showing the 8 possible amber preserved things you can get, and a wooden hammer and chisel.
Tumblr media
This kits sand block also had the Smithsonian logo stamped into it
Tumblr media
The simulated amber preserved things I got were a wood gnat, a termite, a caddisfly, a metalmark butterfly, a feather, and a set of leaves.
The simulated amber pieces are casted plastic with a sticker inside. This works better for the leaves, feather, and butterfly, for the other insects it doesn't work as well unless you look at it head on. The same things about the blocks and chisels for the other two kits also apply to this kit. The distribution of the pieces was better, as one was on a separate part of the block from the others. It was nice the kit came with a brush so you could brush off the dust of each piece as you went, tho it wasn't super effective because of the texture of the pieces. This kit also had a lot of empty space in the packaging.
Overall, the only kit of these I would recommend is the simulated amber dig kit. All of these kits were about $15-16 dollars, and you don't really get that much in them in terms of rocks and gems. It's mostly about the experience of digging for things and the surprise of which gems or rocks you're gonna get, but the rocks aren't very well distributed in the blocks and the tools provided aren't really that good. I am happy with everything I got out of these kits, but there are better dig kits, like Nat Geo and Discovery's dig kits.
If you get any of these kits, I recommend doing it outside, as it generates a lot of dust. Something else that might help, which I read in a review of one of these kits, is soaking the block in water. It makes the block softer and keeps the mess more concentrated.
Edit: Another thing the rock and gem dig kits do that is misleading is showing stones that are bigger than what are included in the kit and that aren't options available to get in the kit on the box art
Tumblr media
And here's everything together:

I hope you enjoyed reading this :)

What bitties(preferable the Butter and Bee ones if you dont want to do them all!) would be best for ppl that live in apartments?
I think I will be doing the Butter and Bee bitties, we just have so many different types,
Though the best bitty types for apartments would be Lamias! For the most part they are not super active, though any bitty can adjust, though some adjust better when mini sized, like the Satyrs!
Butter =
Best: Pipevine, Chiri
-
Good: Metalmark, Daggerwing
-
Bad: Tiger Mimic, Comma,
-
Bee =
Best: Bumble, Corum,
-
Good: Apis,

the amount of people confused about whether it’s a butterfly or a moth on one of my metalmark butterfly posts is a little funny but I can understand where the confusing is coming from.
the thing a lot of people use to tell if it’s a moth or butterfly is the “how it sits with its wings” thing and that’s not the best identifier. there’s butterflies (and some skippers) that sit with their wings flat sometimes. I like to watch swallowtails when they’re doing this because it shows off their patterns and wing tails.
the best way to tell if it’s a moth or butterfly is to look at the antennae tips. butterflies will always have a bulb at the end, even if it’s subtle. it can hard to distinguish for some species, but if the antennae tip is rounded, it’s probably a bulb. moth antennae come in a variety of forms but will always end with a tapered end.
metalmarks have bulbs on their antennae, so they’re butterflies. there’s a lot of other reasons they’re classified as butterflies, but that’s a good quick way to tell.

Hello!!!! Hello!!!!!! Today is a good day, I won presidency in my schools gsa!!! (which I was not expecting tbh this is crazy) Its so cool :)
Now on to the butterflies (I am definitely using my book for this cause there is no way i could memorize everything in here /gen) the first butterfly to be exterminated by human activity was the xerces blue in North America :(, one swallowtail is in a sub family of its own: the archaic swallowtail/ short-horned baronia, when first discovering birdwings (a subfamily of swallowtail) the discoverer called them "the largest, the most perfect, and the most beautiful of butterflies", a family of butterflies called skippers are notoriously hard for people to tell apart from eachother, the cabbage butterfly was accidentally introduced to north america in the 1860's and Australia and New Zealand in 1929 and has since become one of the most common butterflies in the world, anyways that isnt anywhere near as much as I could go through but I'm tired so gonna stop there
Now on to a list of butterflies I find particularly pretty!! Rajah Brooke's birdwing, the common rose (which has become my favorite butterfly), the black/common jezebel, the chocolate tiger, the superb leafwing, the forest giant owl, the purple emperor, sunset daggerwing, the long tailed metalmark/sword tailed doctor, and an honourable mention to the white plume moth which is not a butterfly but looks SO cool -Moth anon
Moth anon!!!! Rejoice!!! They're here!!! Hi :]
First of all yo, that's so cool and exciting! Proud of you <33333
Now butterfly time pog👀 (1) Aw that's so sad o7 blue xerces my heart misses you (2) Yo that's cool though, special little guys in their own little section, I love that (3) Just googled them and wow that's a big butterfly holy, wowowowow I love them and they look so pretty and aa!! That's so nice as well aw (4) That's a tad funny and also quite cool and impressive, proud of the skippers, like the use of notorious almost feels like they're trying to trick us yanno and honestly good on them (5) Yoooo I didn't know that, well I didn't know any of this but that's so cool because like I know those guys, I've seen those pretty little fellas, that's cool
Tumblr media
Ok bonus pretty butterfly round, am hyped let's go because aaawww my god they all look so pretty and cooool!!! Everybody look at them ↓↓↓ Like I'm gonna sound repetitive if I go over ever one but you have wonderful taste in pretty butterflies and moths thank you for sharing. But like aaa the amount of this that just look pure magical, look at that first one!! or the pretty pinky-purple ones (that 4th one really said bi rights) and the second one is so cool like the front and the back of the wings look so different and I love them for it!! The chocolate one I can fully see where the name comes from, feels cozy, feels nice. And the detail and the patterns and the colours of the owl one in the middle like I had to pause for a second that's just so cool and pretty what the!! And the while plume???? Dude that's so so so cool, like it feels mystical, maybe a bit ghostly like idk, I just want to befriend it, I want to befriend all of them.

A beginner&#039;s guide to butterfly watching
New Post has been published on https://nexcraft.co/a-beginners-guide-to-butterfly-watching/
A beginner's guide to butterfly watching
Old World swallowtails like this one hang out on the West Coast or in Alaska. (Deposit Photos/)
Cliff Hagen spotted it from about 15 yards away: a powder blue spring azure butterfly, bouncing out of sight behind a tree.
“That’s our first one of the day,” Hagen said to a half-dozen volunteers gathered around him for the annual Staten Island butterfly count he led at the end of June.
By the end of the outing, the group tallied 346 individual butterflies representing 24 species across several sites. Hail and thunder ended their 8-hour effort.
Among their finds: stained-glass American ladies perched on lavender, broad-winged skippers and buckeyes swirling in a whirl of rust and orange, and a dusty-looking common sootywing resting on a dandelion. The group counted least skippers, one of North America’s smallest butterflies (no bigger than a pinky nail), on the outskirts of the wetlands at Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden. And lots of cabbage whites, fluttering all over the place.
During the weeks around the Fourth of July, groups like this one survey natural areas across the country and world to take stock of butterfly populations. For many beginner butterfliers, the counts are an easy way into the outdoor pastime.
Butterflying may not be as popular as birding—the 5,000-strong North American Butterfly Association is miniscule compared to the country’s 45 million birders. But that’s because butterfly-chasing remains “massively underrated,” according to Rosemary Mosco, a science writer and butterflier who recently took to Twitter to share what she loves about her hobby.
“A lot of people think that butterflies are frilly and boring,” she says. “But they are just so cool and bizarre and fascinating. It never gets boring.”
Some are carnivorous, others are adorable, and a few have long snouts. You can find them everywhere from bogs to mountainsides. About 20,000 butterfly species populate the globe; about 600 reside in the Lower 48. Most people in the United States live near about 100 butterfly species—more in the Rio Grande Valley and less in New England, NABA says.
So if you’re looking to break into butterflying, we’ve got the basics right here.
What you’ll need
A field guide like <a href=”https://press.princeton.edu/titles/10985.html”>A Swift Guide to Butterflies of North America</a> or the <a href=”http://www.kaufmanfieldguides.com/butterflies.html”>Kaufman Field Guide to Butterflies of North America</a>
Binoculars (optional)
Camera or smartphone for photos (optional)
Luckily, that’s not much.
A field guide is your most important tool. When you set your sights on a flutter-by, the book will help you first sort your subject into one of the six butterfly families in North America: swallowtails, whites and yellows, gossamerwings, metalmarks, brushfoots, and skippers. They also contain useful information about each species’ biology: their size, habitat, food and migration season.
You might consider investing in a pair of binoculars so you can really zoom in on the detail and color of a butterfly, some of which can be dime-sized or smaller. Unlike birders, who point their binoculars up, butterfliers point theirs down. Most binoculars will go blurry if you get closer than 10 feet from your subject, so Jeffrey Glassberg, NABA president and author of the Swift field guide, recommends finding a pair that will give you a sharp view within several feet of a butterfly.
And while you may be envisioning an idyllic image of chasing butterflies with a net, Glassberg warns against the “unnatural and vulgar experience” of netting one for a closer look or to keep as a collectible. “There’s no need to carry a net,” he says.
Where you should go
Unsurprisingly, almost anywhere.
Your best bet for finding butterflies is the open space of any nearby natural area around midday. Butterflies (like amphibians and most reptiles) are ectotherms, which means their internal temperature is regulated by their environment. The sun-soaking creatures will literally hide from cold, dampness, or a tousling wind. Some, like the question mark butterfly, are known for emerging later in the day.
As a butterflier, you’ll quickly learn that certain butterflies prefer certain habitats—wetlands, meadows, shrubs, or woodlands, for example—or can only be found near their host plants. As you may remember from your school days, monarchs mill around milkweed plants. Some swallowtails stick to herbs like parsley or tarragon, while coppers count blueberries and buckwheat among their preferred habitats. Other species feed on decaying plant matter or feces.
How to get started
See all those butterflies out there? No? That’s because you haven’t started looking yet! (Deposit Photos/)
Step one: sleep in.
Unlike birders, some of whom drag themselves out of bed before dawn for their hobby, butterfly-watchers need to wait until the day is warm enough for their subjects to emerge.
And unlike birds, butterflies are relatively easy to get close to.
“Birds don’t want to be approached,” says naturalist Jim McCormac, who maintains a blog on the many creatures inhabiting his home state of Ohio. “Approach is way easier with butterflies.”
When you see one you’d like to examine, it’s time to get sneaky. Mosco recommends creeping up on them while staying low to the ground, without breaking the horizon line. Once you’re close enough, snap a picture. That way, you can compare your photo to a field guide at your leisure, she says.
Don’t try to do too much, too fast. Practice identifying families first before you worry about pinning down any species.
Hagen suggests focusing on their movement—how high or low they fly from the ground, and whether they bob, dance, or perch.
“It’s not just what they look like, it’s how they’re acting” Hagen says.
And if that still feels daunting, there are about two dozen NABA chapters and other local butterfly clubs that host meetings and field trips with people who will be happy to guide you through your first butterfly expeditions. “More eyes, more butterflies,” is Hagen’s motto.
“Learning from other people is the easiest way,” Glassberg says. “It’s very easy to get involved.”
Why you should do it
“They’re beautiful—that’s the main draw,” McCormac says. “They’re works of art.”
And if the splendor of our teensy winged friends isn’t enough to draw you in, consider that spending time outdoors is a proven health benefit for better sleep and improved mental health. Just two hours outside each week is enough for a noticeable health impact. “Butterflying is good for human beings,” Glassberg says.
The hobby also demands a mental awareness that can be both meditative and surprising. On a butterflying outing, it’s hard not to notice all the other creatures—indigo buntings and woodpeckers, beetles, moths, damselflies, and dragonflies—flitting around the technicolor blooms and greens of summer.
Ultimately, Glassberg hopes, participation in butterflying encourages people to want to conserve butterflies and their habitats.
“If something’s not part of your life, you’re not going to care if it’s gone,” he says.

THANK GOD, MY METALMARK KEEPS FUCKING SNARLING AT ME AND IDK WHY DUDE IT DOESNT HAVE AN NHP EHATS GOING ON
Sorry about that chief! Had an........ unfortunate run-in with the higher-ups, but I was good so they put your favorite NHP back in the seat!
About your Metalmark, have you been providing it with proper enrichment? Even if your mech isn't equipped with an NHP or AI, it's still important to take care of them properly! After so long, Metalmarks in particular tend to become... aggressive. Even towards their pilots!
and for safe measure I'd recommend cycling its systems.

is it safe to attach an air tag to my metalmark? would this hurt her feelings? i keep losing her.
Hello, and thank you for asking!
Yes it is entirely safe to do so, infact we manufacture ones of our own that still remain undetectable on the battlefield as this seems to be a reoccurring problem! If you're using a non standard SSC tracking tag for your metalmark, we recommend taking it off before going on sorties as enemy forces could detect you this way.
It also may be good to try and provide your metalmark with more enrichment time or attention, as they'll be less likely to hide away and want to stick by your side.
Hope this helps! As always, you only need one! - The Intern

tbh I expected the gynandromorph posts to be ones that people would be like “there’s no way that’s real” even though they’re just intersex bugs but I’ll be honest the metalmark post on a daily basis gets more tags questioning the validity than any of the morphs.
maybe it’s because it’s one of my shortest posts so it reads less serious but I didn’t have anything that interesting to share about c. chrysame that doesn’t apply to a lot of metalmarks, aside from maybe explaining how metalmarks evolved to be shiny like that. there’s already a good many ento blogs dedicated to metalmarks that would give similar info, though and in more detail. that’s just how it is for a lot of lesser known species, especially a subspecies like the one in that post.
