our main problem in effecting change, in ourselves or others, too often begins with greatly underestimating the resistance involved, as well as misjudging it's nature."

I think philosophy and math really do go well together not JUST because of their histories being so interconnected but also because like math at the higher levels is a lot of I Made Up These Numbers That Do This Weird Thing and philosophy is a lot of like What Is Real And What Can We Know?

fellow fictives my babes my darlings i am BEGGING YOU to stop tagging your very personal stuff with ships relating to your fictive-shape and then start talking about whether or not you ''condone'' these ships entirely purely based on your personal comfort as if youre talking about law. do what you want with your own irl body and relationships. you are not part of shipping. you are a real person. i am BEGGING YOU PERSONALLY to not partake in the crossing of these lines
#my t#and holy fuck stop worrying about 'the morality' of dating ppl wrt pearl-clutching antishipping ideologies#you are not. fictional. you are a person. this is just basic conservative brand homophobia.#you are functionally a conservative in my eyes if you use an antishipping/fanpol lens to delegate whether or not irl relationships are#allowed to exist or not. and then you say yall are progressive. STOP IT!!!!#if you want to or are already going out with another fictive of an appropriate age then DO SO FREELY REGARDLESS OF SHAPE/NAME#i mean holy fuck yall#our bro calls our partner systems dave his husband and vice versa because theyve been together for *11 fucking years*#yes. they are beta dirk and dave shaped. no they are not related#no they are not and have never done anything wrong by dating#they are both adults. they are a gay couple whove been together longer than some of yall have been active in fandom. they are nearly 30.#and if ANYONE has the gall to say they shouldnt be together i'll kill you!!!! i dont care!!!! i'll kill you with my mind beam!!!!#its fucking weird that yall do this to yourselves and other fictives#its just straight up homophobia to tell a queer fictive its amoral to like/date/be in love with another queer fictive#i dunno guys!!!! the way we talk abt fictives#and esp the way other fictives talk about fictives as a whole and then treat other fictives through that#makes me REALLY UNCOMFORTABLE#i am not!!!!!!! your fantasy!!!!!!!! my relationships arent fandom-political!!!!!! i am a real fucking person!!!!!#i hate hate hate the thought of posting alter art again and having a stranger come around and say 'hey i think ur from my timeline'#purely based on our metaphysical looks#its happened before and it was so fucking unnerving it made us feel dirty and used#''this is such a nonissue john why are u talking abt it'' because we've been used and groomed and abused through this culture before!!!!!#and i want to stop seeing it!!!!!#and i want other ppl to stop seeing it as a purely good thing rather than chasing & entertaining delusion & perpetuating misery!!!!

angels are metaphysical beings but i do like to imagine how an angelic corpse would behave if they left one behind when killed. i like to think that it'd get hotter rather than cooling as the mechanisms and functions that keep it stable decay, eventually resulting in meltdown and the spontaneous combustion of the corpse, like a hay fire or nuclear disaster.

The clones really are a fascinating contrast to stormtroopers. And I don’t mean Finn and the First Order because they follow in the wake of The Clone Wars; I mean Imperial stormtroopers who dominated the Star Wars imagination first and the longest.
For decades, stormtroopers basically functioned like clones: they looked and sounded the same, even though we knew there were different people underneath the helmets they never took off; different faces, same personality.
Then actual clones basically inverted the model: genetically identical men used every opportunity to differentiate themselves, from their armor to their body modifications to their behavior; same face, different personalities.
The one place where the Venn diagram intersected was loyalty, but even then, they still inverted each other’s models. Clones designed to be unwaveringly loyal and obedient consistently questioned orders and their place in the galaxy. Meanwhile, stormtroopers from disparate planets and cultures unfailingly followed the orders of an impersonal Empire.
For all of Star Wars’s faults, for all the ways in which they dumb down or gloss over traditional scifi modes and themes, I can’t think of a more thorough exploration of cloning, the attendant questions of identity and free will, and the sociopolitical and metaphysical implications of a race of genetically identical men, of sameness in difference and difference in sameness, than the clone troopers.

The way that US Liberals talks about voting is such a classic example of how American Civil Religion has absolutely rotted their minds. Like voting isn't a tool to achieve political ends; it's a ritual that you are morally obligated to partake in to maintain the spiritual health of the nation. You don't use voting as a strategy in order to directly affect the material conditions of the world, giving power to representatives who will pursue specific policies and holding them accountable if they fail. No, goodness and justice will metaphysically spring from the wellspring of democracy as long as everyone does their part to keep it full. As long as everyone does their part to honour the Founding Fathers and the core values of the nation then everything will be in order, the system will function as it should and all world's problems will naturally solve themselves. If this isn't happening then it means not enough people voted hard enough.
Denying your vote isn't a a tactic you can use to affect politics; it's a violation of your sacred duty. Denying your vote in response to political failure makes as much sense as denying your prayers and sacrifice after a bad harvest. Clearly the problem here was your lack of devotion and you aren't gonna solve it by reducing your devotion even further. You're just letting the forces of evil win; you might as well be directly in league with them.
Like I'm not even a believer in Liberal Democracy and yet the way that Yanks talk about it simply boggles my mind; utterly detached from anything resembling the material conditions of the world we live in. Like I can think of no other way to describe it but a religious belief in the ontological superiority of their institutions and that they need only faithful participation to properly function. A ridiculous way to approach politics and yet one that holds enough mainstream acceptance that you are forced take it seriously. Very unfortunate for any who hold hope of meaningful change through electorialism, but convenient to those who wish to maintain the status quo

So one of the things that Good Omens, the book in particular, points out again and again, is that Heaven and Hell are functionally the same. “Anyway, why are we talking about this good and evil?” book Crowley says. “They’re just names for sides. We know that.”
The two sides may seem ideologically opposed, but they do suspiciously similar things, and neither of them care about humanity. They’re both willing to destroy all life on Earth to prove whose gang is best. (There’s a bit of a Cold War analogy here that’s very obvious in the book.) That all was made very clear in season one.
But what the Job minisode shows is that Heaven and Hell are really one system, playing a game of good cop/bad cop with humans, angels and demons alike.
We learn that God and Satan not only talk to each other, but are on familiar enough terms to make a bet. (Which involves making some humans suffer to prove a point, very on brand for Good Omens’ God.) These are not some mid-level metaphysical bureaucrats sharing information through back channels that don’t exist but totally do. This is collusion at the highest level! They write up a contract and everything! And then Heaven simply stands back and lets Hell do its dirty work.
(Flash forward 4500 years to Aziraphale telling Crowley he should be the one to kill the Antichrist so Heaven doesn’t have “blood on its hands.”)
Heaven and Hell also work as a unified system to keep their respective angels and demons in line. Heaven needs Hell in order to ensure compliance in its own ranks. The Fall must have had a huge demonstration effect: this is what will happen to anyone else who steps out of line. Heaven mostly uses fear to control its own population, with the threat of falling always there to ensure obedience. And Hell is full of angry demons, isn’t it? Anger is pretty much the only emotion it’s socially acceptable for a demon to have, and Heaven is very useful for keeping that anger focused on an external target.
The Job storyline is the first time in the series we’ve seen Heaven and Hell working together so directly, but I don’t think it’ll be the last. They’re in the same building, after all. One of them just has a better view.

since your tags were wondering about this: ice-pick lodge put the haruspex route out first because they felt the original haruspex route was more incomplete than the original bachelor route, and if they were going to finish any, it should be that one. daniil's route from classic was deemed more complete and less in need of a rewrite, but the marble nest dlc shows ipl were working on bachelor route at first
Ah thank you! I’m not going to lie I found the Classic Bachelor route (what the hell is a focus? Scarlet Utopia? Why on earth is the Bachelor allying with the Kains who have frankly screwed more and more directly with him than the other families? Why is he-the-rationalist relying on Maria, whose powers are distinctly less manifest and obvious than e.g. Clara’s? Executor riddles?) a lot less coherent than the Classic Haruspex route (reclaim identity, brew potion, defeat the manifestation of his insecurities, ???, profit) so I would not have guessed!

It was probably for the best for Oda to side-step how exactly Cindry is able to resist Hogback's orders despite not having her original soul. You could argue that somehow haki is involved or that in its absence a zombie's shadow personality could subsume some of the functions of a soul bit it doesn't really matter. I can imagine a future after Robin's written a memoir of her adventures this whole situation causing quite a stir among philosophers specializing in metaphysics. Robin herself steals Hogback's own language of miracles, showing just how incredible this resistance is
Tumblr media
But even this language is significant as Skypiea explores what a miracle means in the One Piece world, and it involves people working for themselves to try to make something happen, which in turn leads to divine intervention. Somewhere deep inside there's a part of Cindry fighting as hard as she can against Hogback's orders. And while vague, it fits the overall themes of the series.

You know in hindsight is is pretty obvious that the Nine Houses are that way not because of some metaphysical or magical reason, but because their whole society was worldbuilt by overpromoted millennials who had little to no idea how to rebuild humanity, so they just slapped something together and the Houses have spent 10,000 years trying to make his sorting quiz bullshit into an actual functioning society.
Like...the Sixth House is so inbred that you have four people on the planet you can pick for breeding and their military wing’s job is “go get laid by foreigners to give some diversity to the drying puddle that’s our gene pool”. The Fourth House is being slowly absorbed into the Fifth House because they can’t stop heroically killing themselves. The Ninth House murdered literally all of their children and destroyed their House’s future to make one super-necromancer because.....they wanted a super-necromancer. They have a house for sparking fashion trends and another for beautifully dying of cancer. There is no way this society should function and the only reason it’s lasted this long is that they’ve been patching up all the cracks with zombie magic.
Harrow tells John that her parents destroyed their House and John barely even blinks an eye before handing her a bunch of people he’s kept frozen. Has he done this before? How many times has a House been on the verge of collapsing in on itself and John had to go duct tape it back together?

Legends of the humanoids
Reptilian humanoids (5)
Wuxing – the connections between the Five Dragon Kings (Ref) and the Five Elements philosophy
To better understand the origins of the Five Dragon Kings and the ancient Chinese legend, it is worth mentioning the wuxing of natural philosophy, which states that all things are composed of five elements: fire, water, wood, metal and earth.
The underlying idea is that the five elements 'influence each other, and that through their birth and death, heaven and earth change and circulate'.
The five elements are described as followed:
Wood/Spring: a period of growth, which generates abundant vitality, movement and wind.
Fire/Summer: a period of swelling, flowering, expanding with heat.
Earth is associated with ripening of grains in the yellow fields of late summer.
Metal/Autumn: a period of harvesting, collecting and dryness.
Water/Winter: a period of retreat, stillness, contracting and coolness.
The wuxing system, in use since the Han dynasty (2nd century BCE), appears in many seemingly disparate fields of early Chinese thought, including music, feng shui, alchemy, astrology, martial arts, military strategy, I Ching divination, and traditional medicine, serving as a metaphysics based on cosmic analogy.
The wuxing originally referred to the five major planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Mars and Venus), which were thought of as the five forces that create life on earth. Wu Xing litterally means moving star and describes the five types of Qi (all the vital substances) cycles through various stages of transformation. As yin and yang continuously adjust to one another and transform into one another in a never-ending dance of harmony, they tend to do so in a predictable pattern.
The lists of correlations for the five elements are diverse, but there are two cycles explaining the major interaction. The yin-yang interaction, which by increasing or decreasing the qualities and functions associated with a particular phase, it may either nourish a phase that is in deficiency or drain a phase that is in excess or restrain a phase that is exerting too much influence (see below):
The Creation Cycle (Yang)
Wood feeds Fire
Fire creates Earth (ash)
Earth bears Metal
Metal collects Water
Water nourishes Wood
The Destruction Cycle (Yin)
Wood parts Earth
Earth dams (or absorbs) Water
Water extinguishes Fire
Fire melts Metal
Metal chops Wood
The Huainanzi (2nd BCE) describes the five colored dragons (azure/green, red, white, black, yellow) and their associations (Chapter 4: Terrestrial Forms), as well as the placement of sacred beasts in the five directions (the Four Symbols beasts, dragon, tiger, bird, tortoise in the four cardinal directions and the yellow dragon.
