I’ve seen a little back and forth about Samus’s apparent tendency to wear heavy eye makeup even when in the field and have some thoughts.
For one; idk man, maybe she just likes the way it looks? We could get into Deep Character Analysis about her probably-complicated relationship with how human culture conceptualizes gender and presentation but I think it probably just boils down to “she likes the way it looks.” And I think that’s great!
As an added bonus, she can wear makeup under the helmet, it’s not like it’s going to get messed up by the environment, or by her touching her face. I’d honestly probably wear makeup more often too if I didn’t have to worry about fixing it.
For two, and this is something that dawned on me earlier today; considering all anyone sees of her is just that tiny strip of her face, heavy eye makeup is basically halfway to war-paint.
Seriously, think about it. Imagine you’re some GF Marine mook hanging around on duty and Samus Aran, legendary bounty hunter (of mostly ambiguous gender and species), shows up at your base. Most people only ever see them from afar, and from a distance that visor looks like it’s opaque green.
But then they pass you by in the hall and look your way, and the light hits just the right angle through that visor and you see
Tumblr media
Intense pale eyes outlined in stark black.
That’d probably make you jump, wouldn’t it? (One would hate to be on the receiving end of an even more focused or angry version of that look, wouldn’t they?)
I can vouch that this could be startling too. Recently I was hanging out at home before a recital done up in makeup and costume, and managed to spook my partner of 10 years by simply by making eye contact. I don’t wear makeup basically ever, so he was caught off-guard by the contrast and how intense it made me look, to the point it actually made him jump.
So yeah. Our girl probably just likes the way she looks with some extra definition, but maybe there’s a hint of a cheeky scare-tactic in there too.

Metroid Series Suit Aesthetic Compass
Trawling through my archive and found this post along with a comment from @nachozmusic so I had to go do it. Please enjoy an aesthetic compass of Samus's suits from "Guy-Creature", and "Chunky-Smooth"
Tumblr media
Feel free to make your own version of this, I've hosted the .clip file here on GoogleDrive.
Some observations/comments under the cut
-Zero Suit included for sake of completeness, and judged on aesthetic only. I believe Samus herself is very creaturey, but it's more of a personality thing so it doesn't count. Given the resemblance of the Zero Suit to Chozo body markings, I could be persuaded it is more creaturey.
-As it turns out most designs fall into the "Chunky Guy" quadrant, to nobody's surprise.
-Re: the Fusion suits; I think the colour palette influences the creatureyness, so I have sorted them accordingly.
-Re: the Dread suits; as above, the colour palette influences the creatureyness, but also the changes in the shoulders influence the chunkiness.
-Re: the Prime suits; as above with the colour palettes, I think the the Gravity suit is slightly more "Guy" than the Varia, and the Phazon suit more "Creature", but both not by much. I tried not to overlap them too much so the chart was more readable.
-I consider the "retro"/2D versions of the Power and Gravity suits distinct variations, mainly because of difference in art style makes them more distinct than any 2D Varia.
-The Light Suit reads both very Creature and very Guy depending on what parts you're looking at (very sleek and minimal, but resembles a Luminoth), so it sits in the middle.
-The Dark Suit got pushed around a lot as I worked on that quadrant; each time I added a design I had to readjust where it was relative to the others. I think where it sits now is about right.
-SR Varia is the Chunkiest Guy, hands down. Metroid suit is an exceptionally Chunky Creature.

Species Spotlight: Chelosian
A breakdown and reference for my Chelosian original species.
Tumblr media
Chelosians are a reptilian bipedal sapient species that loosely resemble ceratopsian dinosaurs or turtles. They have short-beaked faces with versatile teeth in the rear of the mouth. Male age-morphs develop short tusks, combat claws on thumbs and hallux (big toe), spines on upper limbs and nape, and loose wattles on the neck; these traits are holdovers from ancestor species where males competed in intraspecific combat during breeding seasons. Female age-morphs are larger overall and develop ornamental frills and noticeable fat deposits in their torso and tail. Their legs are plantigrade, their hands and feet have 5 digits with claws and minor webbing. Their hallux is slightly opposable. Their tails reach to the knees or further but do not touch ground. They are used for communication and calorie storage but are not prehensile. Scales on the back are thickly keratinized and form a flexible shell-like surface in adults. For male-morphs, this shell is studded with spines. Scale colours range from reds through to brown into greens. Distinct patterning is rare but mottled colouring is common, scale colours will sometimes shift as an individual transitions between sex morphs.
Chelosians are sequential hermaphrodites. Chelosians are “male-morph” upon reaching sexual maturity and remain so for ~50 cycles before transitioning to “female-morph” stage and undergoing development of different secondary sexual characteristics, shedding tusks and growing cartilaginous frills. They remain fecund for another 40-60 cycles before entering a geriatric maturity stage. They have no cultural basis for sex-assigned or gender identities, instead a Chelosian’s social identity is closer to an age-related prescribed role. They prefer neutral or neo-pronouns when speaking in Galactic Standard, and have age- and relation-determined pronouns/honourifics in their native Cheloan.
Chelosians are omnivorous and semi-warm-blooded, allowing them to survive most in climates in the known habitable range, though they tend to favour temperate or warmer habitats. Chelosians have an unusual ability to ‘throttle’ their metabolism, easily adapting to a lower calorie intake or colder climate without suffering starvation or torpor. Due to this quirk, they are also able to sequester and excrete most common pollutants and heavy metals, allowing them to work in environments hazardous to many other species. As a result, many Chelosians can be found in hazardous materials or maintenance work positions and are also often among the “founder” populations of new space station habitats.

The fact Mother Brain knew necromancy and how to bind the souls to statues so you have to kill the bosses to reach her isn’t appreciated enough
She managed to pick up some secrets of the Chozo, but it appears she also did not share freely to preserve her leverage as an ally to the Pirates
