Thelreads, MHA 277, Replies Part 2

1) “Oh boy I have a feeling that this is not going according to AfO’s plans

he was not expecting Shigaraki to reject him like that

probably because he didn’t considered the possibility that Shigaraki would want to be better than him. He is not looking forward to living in the shadow of your glory, he wants to be the shadow to cast darkness upon the world”-We’ve said before that AFO is a markedly better mentor than the inexperienced All Might. Ironically, here, that same trait is precisely why Tomura starts turning against him – he taught him too well on how to surpass him, and now Tomura’s not backing down from his goal of becoming better than his old master, even at said master’s expense.

2) “Oh that you will Shigaraki

Time to break the chains and show that The End does not cower under the words of any Lord of Evil.”-

The reader: so…are we rooting for Tomura here?

Horikoshi: let’s be honest, we’re rooting against AFO.

3) “Yeah but I fear this one might be way harder to deal with. All Might was like a fighter made out of biceps, but Shigaraki here is not that far below it, and not to say, he has no problem actually killing you”- Tomura has no limits, no restraints and no way to hold him down. Pure unadulterated freedom to do whatever he wants, and what he really wants is to kill you all violently.

4) “OH HE SAID THE THING

THERE WE GO

NOW ROLL CREDITS”- Ok, but this is a really sad moment though. It implies that Kotaro cut off all connection to his mother for ‘abandoning’ him so much, he never even told his son his Grandmother’s name. Tomura’s not one to care about the past like others, but the fact he’s got no idea why Gran Torino is so upset with him is sad in itself.

5) “Oh don’t worry Gran torino, he intends to hurt him way more than that…

But honestly, that’s a bit harsh, this monster in front of you is not Tenko’s fault, it is AfO’s. He’s the one to blame, not the kid Shigaraki used to be.”- Calling him a ‘monster’ is perhaps the only way that Gran Torino and All Might could ever fight him, thinking of him as a ‘thing’ that has to be put down rather than a victim of their close friend/mentor that they failed to protect/save. Hesitancy will cost lives in this fight, theirs and so many others, so they’ve gotta do what they have to to end it all.

6) “OOOHHHHH

HELL YEAH, NOW THAT WAS A GOOD MOVE

BAKUGO USED HIS SECRET MOVE: STEALTH BOMBER, IT IS SUPER EFFECTIVE”-The problem with overlooking Bakugou is that he won’t take that lying down, and will make you hurt for it.

7) “OH GOD WHAT IS IT NOW

IS IT MACHIA? THE FACT HE’S ALMOST HERE?”- Thankfully he’s still a ways off, but he sure as hell is trying to get there quickly.

8) “HOLY SHIT DUDE

MT LADY IS ACTUALLY HOLDING HIM BACK ALL ON HER OWN

OH MY GOD”-

I think he’s still overpowering her with sheer force, but she’s slowing him down greatly, acting like a massive lead weight that’s hampering his inevitable progress down to a manageable speed.

9) “Alright, by this page alone I already think I know how we`ll start. So…”- 80 Kilometers apart. Point A to Point B. If the heroes can’t stop him, Machia is going to bulldoze that entire length of countryside straight between him and Tomura, no matter what stands between him, being it trees, mountains, or whatever cities and infrastructure happens to be in the path of this living disaster.

10) “And the main fight is still going as bad as expected, but they are at least managing to pound Shigaraki with a few good hits, even if overall damage is negligible at best. I think that the only reason they aren’t being crushed is that he’s still not entirely there, so to say.

But lord, if AfO actually manage to snap him out of the driver seat and take over that body- oh things are not gonna be good. Shigaraki has enthusiasm and willpower, but AfO has centuries of fighting and quirk experience, he will know how to use that body to its full potential, we cannot allow him to take over

which means, of course, that soon he’ll be pulling the strings on that doll”- Ironically, and tragically, the heroes being unaware of the details behind Tomura’s head means that they’re accidently helping AFO with his takeover, grinding down Tomura externally whilst his master fights him from within, making him steadily lose a battle on two fronts, all whilst under the belief that their attacks will help save lives in the end.

I just.. I had a thought.

can you just imagine bakugo being an itamae? an itamae is what we most know as a hibachi chef. can you imagine an au where before bakugo became a chef who owned his own restaurant that is his pride and joy, he was an itamae?

seeing him roll in with his cart of ingredients and greeting everyone at the table. the tall red hat standing on top of his head that smoothed down his blonde tufts against his forehead and the nape of his neck.

bakugo asking with a straight face if there’s anyone who’s celebrating anything. and then he starts his routine.

he’s banging the cooking utensils to a rhythm he knew by heart. all the while he’s preparing the grill with oil. he does the usual displays that an itamae does. the onion tower that sets on fire, the beating rice heart, the egg hat trick.

while he doesn’t smile or laugh like the other itamae’s he has this small smirk to his face whenever he plays around with his utensils. flipping and spinning and throwing things in the air as if it were nothing.

and who knows, maybe you might have not have noticed but maybe he, bakugo, was staring at you the whole time.

thinking about being the only person who can make bakugo laugh. sure he does cackles, shrieks, and does boisterous laughs but you make him do the ones that leave him in tears. the belly laughs that have him snorting at least once and having the air stolen out of his lungs. the laughs that make his heart jump. the laughs that leaves a faint pink tinge on his cheeks. the laughs that sounds more like a chuckle, a small one, a hum. you make him laugh like an idiot in love. because he is, for you.

dad suna dad suna dad suna. i have a feeling that when you and suna become parents, you would be the one holding the phone this time. so suna better be prepared for the times where your child, still a baby, has taken a dump in their diapers and oh god it would stink, and suna has to be the one to clean him up. he better be prepared when he sees you take out your phone to record him while trying to snuff out your laughter because of the face he pulled when checking your baby’s diaper. guess now he knows how his friends felt back in middle school whenever he recorded them.

bakugo: chapstick

this man is a sucker for chaptick. he never understood a girls appeal to wanting to have shiny lip gloss or matte lipstick of all shades as he was focused on being a hero. but the thing that really stuck to him with you was chapstick. you used the standard carmex, cherry flavored, and also one that was mint, he didn’t remember what brand that one was. but he loved the way it left your lips soft, their natural color could send him into a daze, although he didn’t want to admit it. he especially loved the burn it left whenever you kissed. it stung at his own lips, and it made him smell like you. just another way of him being close to you.

deku: scarves

scarves, scarves, scarves. this man is in love with scarfs, just look at the one he wears for winter. he has scarves of all colors and designs. he loves seeing them on you though. he couldn’t explain it, but seeing you nuzzle your face in it while sitting down on the train on the way to school, it made him fill with a sense of pride. what was his made you feel safe. that was all he needed. he especially also loved matching scarves.

todoroki: turtlenecks

turtlenecks. oh god have you seen this man and his collection? his casual outfit when at home was comfortable yet fashionable slacks and a goddamn turtleneck. he loved seeing them on you too. you stole [when really he just gave it to you because the cold season was coming around] his favorite one, which happened to be a dark shade of blue that he loved. and he loved it even more when you wore it, it made him wrap his arms around you from behind and place his head on your shoulder. seeing you duck your head into the collar of these makes him want to dedicate a whole entire album of photos just to keep a permanent memory of seeing you like this. he also thinks they come in handy whenever he leaves a hickey or two on you.

“bakugo come on, we’re gonna be late!”

it was morning on a thursday, the sky seemed calm. there was no evident sign of the sun in the sky, only pale grey clouds covering it like a blanket. it was winter after all. you stood by the gate entrance of the home of the bakugo’s, waiting for probably one of the loudest kids in the neighborhood to show up already.

“bakugo, i swear to god, i’m leaving without you if you don’t hurry up!”

“ok, jesus y/n wait the fuck up!”

“i’ve been waiting for five minutes already, we gotta go!”

“then wait five more!”

he always knew how to retaliate your comments you gave him. both of you never really gave each other a chance to have a consistent winner in these games of screaming back and forth. you sighed for what seemed the umpteenth time. there was a little breeze coming in, so you hugged the jacket that covered your uniform closer to you.

“bakugo!” you yelled a third time, a little irritated that he was taking so long, he never took long.

“y/n!” he yelled back, in the same tone as you did, asshole.

bakugo finally rushed out of his home's door, pausing only to hop slightly to adjust his shoes. he ran towards you with his light brown scarf in his hand. he huffed while wrapping it around his neck.

“damn you can’t even wait a few minutes, impatient ass.”

“well you were taking too long while i was starting to feel my ass freeze over.“

he snorted and retorted with something along the lines of, “what ass?”

you rolled your eyes at him and walked along the sidewalk. it was thursday, a school day, and ever since you started going to school with bakugo, you were never late. so it seemed odd to you that all of a sudden to see him taking longer than he normally would have.

“soooo, why were you taking so long? forgot your underwear or something?”

“the fuck, hell no! i was just looking for something.”

“something? oh come on you’re not even going to give me a little hint to what made you so panicky this fine morning? you even made the clouds worried.”

bakugo gave you the stink eye. but at the same time he moved his left hand out of his pocket where he always seemed to stuff it in. he pulled out a glittery object, the size of a card. well maybe because it was a card, an all might card.

“i was looking for this you idiot.”

“...you know show and tell stopped like in elementary school, right?”

“of course i know!“ bakugo yelled back at you, he shoved it back in his pocket along with his hand. there was a moment of silence between you two, before he sighed and mumbled.

“i’ve always had it on me, you remember when i got those chips with deku and my old friends back then?”

“the all might chips? yeah i remember those.”

“remember the card i showed you that i got from them?”

you shook your head slightly, to signal a ‘no’ until your mind went back to the card in his pocket. you let out a loud ‘oh!’.

“wait, but why do you still have it?” you wanted to know. those chips were just any old merchandise that helped all might’s name and company earn more money. any other kid could have had it.

bakugo took another long line of silence before opening his mouth again. the tips of his ears were tinged a now slight pink, and it didn’t look like it was from the cold.

“...i... always wanted to have all might autograph it. wouldn’t mean shit to me if he just signed a random paper, though.”

you remained quiet for a few seconds. so it was that important to him? wait so how long has that card been with him? has he really always carried it alongside him? a small smile grew on your face, remembering when he came over to your house with his friend group shouting how he got all might’s card. he was so happy he was practically bouncing off the walls.

“one day, i’m gonna make all might sign this!”

so this question is kinda out of the blue but i simple couldn't stop wondering about it. what exactly was shigaraki telling bakugou when they met at jakku? the english translation is rather dismissive but i vaguely remember that one fan translator said that there was some at leasts nuance with the way tomura adressed him compared to the rest. it would be really cool to read your take on it (only if you are up to it, of course). thank you for your input. really enjoy reading your meta posts.

The content of the message is fairly dismissive in Japanese as well, but there is a little bit of linguistic nuance we could discuss and run with, so why not? Let’s do it.

The easy part to translate is “mou kimi ni kyoumi nainda,” literally meaning “[Because I’m] not interested in you anymore.” The “[I’m]” is implied, and the “-nda” at the end just means that the phrase is an explanation (hence why I added “[But/Because]” to the beginning of my translation of the sentence). Basically, the reason Tomura is “sorry” is because he’s no longer interested in Katsuki, so that’s what he’s spelling out.

The interesting bits are the following word choices: gomen, kimi, and wa.

Gomen - “Sorry,” but in a casual, familiar way

Kimi - “You,” but with a connotation of familiarity or condescension

Wa - A sentence-ending particle that, when used by men in casual speech, softens/adds politeness to a message that might otherwise sound like it should be taken as offensive because of the content

So what’s funny about these word choices is how much of a disconnect there could be between what Tomura means by them versus how Katsuki might take them.

Tomura usually refers to the heroes with slightly ruder language, such as using the omae form of “you.” However, he has called Katsuki “kimi” ever since kidnapping him back in the Kamino Ward arc.

Both kimi and omae imply some level of intimacy/familiarity between the speaker and subject, but if that familiarity does not actually exist between the two people, the meaning for both becomes rude. The subject could take offense to the use of either term, even if the speaker just mistakenly believes the familiarity is there when it actually is not. The ways in which they sound rude will differ though: omae will sound rude and disrespectful like a vulgarity, but kimi will sound condescending. Kimi implies some sort of hierarchical relationship where the subject is the junior (like kouhai) and the speaker is the senior (like senpai). At its most extreme, it will sound like the speaker finds the subject quaint and nonthreatening (like a child).

Put all the pieces together, and we’ve got Tomura speaking to Katsuki in a manner that has two potential tones:

Tomura might still believe he and Katsuki could come to an understanding like how he mentioned in Kamino when he tried to convince Katsuki to join his side (with Tomura as the leader aka the senior in the hierarchy), and so he is making an effort to show that he means no offense to Katsuki with his words, or;

Tomura might just be laying on the condescension hard by implying Katsuki is so weak and insignificant that Tomura doesn’t even consider him a threat, that Katsuki’s not even on the level of the other heroes present

And we all know no matter which tone Tomura is actually going for, Katsuki is gonna take it as #2 every. damn. time.

Thelreads, MHA 277, Replies Part 1

1) “Oh right, BNHA. Last time midoriya and his sidekick king of explosionmurder jumped in the fray because they are shonen characters and thus have no sense of self-preservation nor love for their lives. So, let’s jump in, on Chapter 277: Who…?

The Doctor?”- Well, there’s only one doctor nearby, but he’s an asshole, so fuck him. That said, the kids will certainly be needing a doctor after this…

2) “Oh yeah, must be nice meeting each other after so long, right? So good for best friends to meet again… (: “- As intense as this clash is, AFO’s mental coaching and interference means that this still isn’t them truly facing each other as enemies – they’re fighting because both belong to opposite sides of an ongoing war, but the personal animosity that should exist between arch-foes like it did with All Might and AFO just isn’t really there, and can’t be as long as Tomura is targeting Izuku under AFO’s orders…though at least he seems to be trying to break free of his puppet strings of his own free will…

3) “Like said a few moments ago: No sense of self-preservation. Let’s see how many bones are obliterated tonight.”-Spoiler: more than Izuku will be able to afford.

4) “Actually the worst case is you fucking dying, but I’ll let it slide because if Aizawa goes everyone else will soon follow suit, so, same thing.”- Aizawa has been relegated to that anime position of the holy maiden whose presence is the only thing holding back the end of the world through constant prayer or something.

5)“Don’t you know he has two kids and a husband to go back to? He can’t die here, he’s so close to retiring, this is his last job before he’s done with it, etc etc tempt fate as much as you like, because I’m already not so sure Aizawa will live to see the fall of The End”- Aizawa’s super-determined to see the kids all live, which means he’ll put himself in danger as best he can to protect them. Tomura is super-determined to kill everything, which he can’t do as long as Aizawa’s around, and doesn’t give a flying fuck about whatever kind of damage is able to be inflicted upon him so long as he succeed in that goal. It’s not a good combination.

6) “Alright Bakugo, I agree wholeheartedly, but question: Why are you involved then?”- Bakugou is Izuku’s support and current common sense holder, and his massive powerful explosions are also good for blinding Tomura, or briefly pushing him backwards from a mid-distance without getting close to him, which is still risky even with decay shut off.

7) “ Okay, even with his regeneration off he still isn’t worse for ear after that, and I doubt Bakugo held back on his shots

christ, this will definitely be a nightmare to fight against…”-The regeneration was already a cheat skill, but they went ahead and tried to make him damn near invulnerable on top of that. Thankfully, he can be damaged gradually, but a serious blow will be really hard to inflict unless Izuku goes 100% on him.

8) “Oh wow, what a burn that was when you stop to think about it

but unfortunately I can’t stop to think about it because Midoriya trying to rope Shigaraki just to be yoink’d like it was nothing was hilarious for some reason

oh my god kid”- Tomura’s long moved part the point where he was trying to unsuccessfully convince bakugou to be a villain. Now he’ll just do it himself. And that casual power difference is a great way to display that as much as Izuku is trying to combat him efficiently with his current “max” output, Tomura’s disregard of his own wellbeing has allowed him to reach greater levels of strength much quicker, to the point of casually dragging Izuku along almost without meaning to. Izuku can match him, but not with a safe level of %...

9) “So close to what Shigaraki? To the next yeet? Because certainly it isn’t to kill them, that much is still considerably away from coming to fruition.”- So close to destroying everything, or perhaps close to getting a hang on his new power’s capabilities and how best to fight with his new enhanced Strength. Or perhaps, it wasn’t actually Tomura saying it at that point, but AFO…

10) “Oh yeah Midoriya, unfortunately you haven’t witnessed the bullshit that he pulled so far, but trust them, it was the exact kind of absurdness that your dad would do on his prime.”- AFO wanted the Symbol of Fear to Be All Might’s Opposite and equal in every measure possible, and he spared no expense at achieving that goal.

11) “Yeah Aizawa but unfortunately there’s a shit-ton of super killing bio weapons running amok, I think that not blinking is gonna be a considerably tall order.”- That’s a problem for when they catch up to them. For now, they’ve gotta deal with the major super-killing bio weapon targeting them all directly.

12) “ …

Ooooookay… I’m starting to think that things are about to turn a little weird…

So, since we have a vestige of AfO inside of Shigaraki, the same way that we have them in OfA, can we assume that he can exert enough influence to take over Shigaraki?

Because I reaaaaally think that we’re gonna go down that path soon

We might not even need to get AfO out of tartarus, in a way, he’s already out”-As his mind starts to crack from the mental struggle within, so too does his body begin to break as a reflection of the strain it’s putting on him. We saw beforehand in facing shinso that the vestiges could exert physical control over Izuku’’s body when he himself couldn’t, but because they’re kind, upstanding heroic individuals, they refused to do so more than was necessary that one time. AFO is none of those things.

In a fitting bastardisation of the Manga’s themes of “Inherited Will” being passed from one generation to the next, teacher to student, when he took on the role of a mentor himself to have Tomura serve his plans, he literally had him inherit his will, and now that will of AFO’s ambitions is running around in a body free of the crippling injuries All Might left on his original….

13) “I have a feeling he is not aiming at just being a whisper and a sigh on the back of your mind

I have a feeling we won’t be seeing you anymore soon enough Shigaraki”- That will depend upon if the will of the next generation is storng enough to overcome the old one. Symbol of Fear vs Symbol of Evil, only one may sit upon the throne. We’ve seen how stubbornly determined Tomura can be before in facing the MLA, and that same willpower is now being tested on a battle on two fronts, mental and physical.
