Observations for Bnha volume 37’s cover

Ok there is so much going on in this cover that I don’t even know where to begin and it’s pretty difficult for me to articulate my thoughts when I get scatter brained like this, so here are some important observations I made.

The cover looks similar to the draft version of volume 29’s clover, with the feral deku front in center mourning his injured friends. Except this time, it’s just him and an injured Bakugo— both have a feral deku, and both have an injured, unconscious Bakugo

This cover reminds me of certain comic book illustrations of heros holding injured friends/loved ones/family members in their arms. I am not implying anything in particular, take that information as you will, but it definitely does display closeness between Izuku and Katsuki.

The red used in the background is pretty much the exact same shade of red as the cover of volume 10. Both of these volumes also include hand imagery, as the force of AFO (with Shiguraki under his control/manipulation) stands in their way as heroes and in the way of their development as people and friends

The color same shade of red also appears in many other volumes, such as volumes 2, 8, and 12

This is clearly a pattern, and brining things back to volume 10 again because it is the most similar in terms of design motifs, we are coming back

Red is an extreme color, and is typically used to indicate danger, violence, and general intensity. It is also the color of blood and as we know, Katsuki’s blood has been spilt in an attempt to get to Izuku (which worked before Mirio stepped in as an emergency therapist lol)

@siflshonen told me that red in a Japanese cultural context, red can mean happiness, and is used for special events such as weddings. I’m personally not thinking too hard about this, but it’s still an interesting and thought provoking fun fact I found out as I was trying to dig around for info! (Also, take this information as you )

The red string of fate also exists in Japanese culture. The string is typically depicted as being tied to fingers, and interestingly enough this cover is filled with fingers in the background that happen to be red. Now I am taking this one more seriously, as this could be a sign of how Bakugo and Midoriya’s fates are intertwined within both their lives and the legacy of AFO & OFA (they each represent one half of heroism— saving and winning— afterall) (ps. I’m not necessarily implying a romantic subtext to this, but I do think fate is a key part of MHA’s story and Bakugo and Midoriya’s close relationship)

The colors of Deku’s new costume currently seem to be inconsistent throughout all the images we’ve gotten of it thus far. WHERE IS THE REFERENCE HORIKOSHI I HAVE TO KNOW WHAT COLOR IT IS

Not having character references is an artist’s worst nightmare, trust me

Deku’s face is covered by his cape. This was shown in multiple chapters, but clearly horikoshi wants us to notice as it is front and center. The last time deku’s face was covered was duing the vigilante arc, and I’ve already talked about how much trauma and pain he was trying to hide during that time. This is probably a similar case

We cannot see his expressions with his mouth, so we have no indication on whether he is smiling like he does when he wants to save, or a frown like when he wants to destructively win

This is not a good thing— this is a warning to the audience to be on the lookout for some more moral dilemmas and emotional hurdles for deku to overcome.

Finally, it should be noted that this is the 3rd volume cover to just have Bakugo and Deku on it— no one else. The first one was volume 2, then volume 29, and now volume 37

The volumes start with a literal rift between Bakugo and Midoriya, and they clearly are on opposing sides. We then transition into Bakugo reaching his hand out to (kid) deku, and the gap between them is now being bridged by Bakugo’s outreached hand. We then end with this volume, with Deku supporting Bakugo’s body. The point I’m trying to make is that they ae slowing getting physically closer to eachother with each of these 3 volumes. This clearly shows the growth and recovery of their relationship.

In the 2nd volume I mentioned (volume 29), Bakugo is reaching his hand out to deku while in this volume (volume 37) Deku is putting his hand on Bakugo, almost like he is accepting the hand that Bakugo offered to him. Of course he can’t physically reach out to Bakugo’s hand since he’s kinda sorta dead at the moment, but the symbolism of accepting Bakugo’s hand is there.

Also quick shoutout to @mettywiththenotes for being the first post I saw to mention the similarities between the covers for volumes 10 and 37, right after I was shouting about it to people on discord lol it made me really happy

Oooh so you finished MHA? Nice! I personally believe that, despite some complaints here and there, the story has been consistently good since the beginning of the war arc. But I was wondering, what would you say are some of the weaker parts in the story so far?

SPOILERS FOLLOW THE MHA MANGA. SPOILERS FOLLOW THE MHA MANGA. SPOILERS FOLLOW THE MHA MANGA.

You specify the story, but I do want to say that I think the biggest flaw of the manga is that the art isn't always readily discernible in action sequences. So I'm definitely looking forward to the anime adaptions of all this stuff.

But yeah, I was honestly shocked the first time I saw Online People saying that MHA is bad now. I feel like the War Arc and beyond has been paying off everything that's been set up in great ways. I have no idea what people were expecting or wanting that they're not getting.

However, I think I'd have to say the weakest part is the 'Star and Stripe' arc. The character herself was too out-of-nowhere, especially considering her power level. (Her quirk seems limitlessly OP to me, but maybe I misunderstood something that keeps her from applying just a little cleverness to solve every problem in the world forever.) And the arc accomplishes its objectives in a very awkward manner- it explains why the rest of the world isn't getting involved in a world-class threat so that the story can continue to focus on the Japanese heroes we've been getting to know (the third movie just shrugged its shoulders at this concern XD), and it depowers All For One so that he can plausibly be beaten despite everything going according to his plan up to that point. I feel like it would have been easier just to not make All For One that powerful, but instead we get this OP character coming out of nowhere to nerf the situation back into the proper scale for the story being told. Had Star & Stripe been more smoothly integrated, or if nerfing All For One and keeping the other nations out of things wasn't such a quick fix for a story problem that had just shown up, then I think it would have gone down better. Heck, if any of the actual cast of the story was really involved, it feel smoother. But as it is, it sticks out in a very awkward way.

Otherwise, I just have some generic criticisms, which are possibly exacerbated by my reading the updates as they come out since the Spring. The story feels like it's struggling to juggle its massive cast at this point, unable to balance a focus on Deku with giving the other characters time to shine. Either Deku is taking up all the page-count, or he's off-screen for several months. Also, it has the typical shonen problem where characters who should are mostly human are getting thrown around and beaten up on a level that they should only survive if they have super-strength, never mind the amount of blood-loss that people shrug off.

Also, a tentative criticism I'm making is that it feels a bit awkward how Shiguraki gets taken over by All For One. After his big character arc and victory of the Metahuman Liberation Front, he gets his personality wiped out and his body taken over. It feels like a bit of a waste, unless I'm supposed to think that his defeat of ReDestro was required to get him to the point where he'd submit to The Doctor's plan, but I didn't get that impression. However, this is something that might be made to feel better by later revelations, which the latest updates are only starting to move towards, so I'm open to changing my mind here. But for now, it feels kinda Hijacked By Ganon after putting so much effort into building up Shigaraki.

Oh no I wasn't meaning Kylar, he's a little bitch baby - and I never really got behind Shiguraki either? I mean in canon I like him but the fandom gives him the incel loser personality that I think fits like, season 1 Shiggy I start liking him when he's a bit more mature and methodical. Really my true love from MHA is Toshinori. I would fucking die for that toll bean he is the second love of my life

Oh and Fatgum is also pretty high up on the list of characters I simp for. He is shaped like a friend and I love him

I always found Shigaraki's personality super hot in fanon, but depends where you're looking. Gotta find where he's a competent incel, a real asshole, and not a dweeb. Yeah he's a greasy gamer, but the fics that get he's dangerous and smart as fuck while being a horny lil fuck? Beautiful.

I could never get into Toshi! I was always just like... Yeah, he's there. Kind of a dick, I guess.

My faves were always Aizawa, Shigaraki, Twice, Mirko, Natsuo and Fatgum ngl. Oh and Denki, I love that lil guy so much, i wanna put him in a hamster ball

Please forgive me for the act but ive been rerrading MHA cause i fell off it after around tge second and third season but theres something about it that makes me so interested in certain aspects of it. Like any of the shiguraki moments after the big all might fight at the 1 third point of the manga and just pretty much everything involving the leauge of villians. Except maybe toga cause horikoshi is a creep. I did find the moments where he explored the development of her quirk interesting and her dynamic with the rest of the leauge made her feel more real. Also that climax at the 2 thirds mark after all the villian stuff was really good too, hawks was a late addition to the main cast of professional heros but i think horikoshi stuck the landing by giving him that spy arc and wrapping that up in such a nicely tragic way. And i appreciate that horikoshi took the step to actually pop the hero bubble and show hero society fall apart after all the deeply ugly things he was peppering in there that were showing that the hero culture in mha was eroding itself and increasingly built on fragile supports as it because a buissness for fame and glory. Though i got quickly bored of how it pivoted back to deku afterwards. It was cool that he was actually taking steps to show society changing with the world around them. Also he pulled a fast one recently wjere he killed bakugo for a whole week which was neat.

Every time I watch MHA I see something I didn’t catch before. I’m in season three and Shiguraki had Bakugo at his villain bar hideout and it blows me away that the way Shigaraki tries to convince him to join up is by saying “society is broken because hero careers make it so the weak and less heroic are pushed aside and underappreciated”

As if that wasn’t exactly what Bakugo did to Midoriya from the moment he knew he was quirkless. Bakugo was the aggressor in a situation exactly like the one Shiguraki describes, where someone perceived as weak was undervalued

And YES we know that part of the issue was that Bakugo actually did see exactly how strong Deku was and let his inferiority complex drive but it still doesn’t change how Bakugo has been up to that point exactly the type of hero that followers of Stain resented the most but because of his aggression and lack of a traditionally heroic personality none of the villains realize it

The writing in this show is so insanely good

Chapter 12

Premis:

When The League of Villains discovers that AllMight has a daughter, they are quick to snatch you up and hold you hostage. Shigaraki had a careful and thought out plan, but that was before you got there. Now you’re in the mood for some not-so-healthy rebellion.

Sorry this has taken so long. I've been very busy with work and moving, and personal projects.

Chapter 11 Chapter 13

"Y/N." He hissed. "Y/N!" Again. "Y/N!!!" Louder. His voice, hoarse and rough. At first it was an order, but as he called your name, it was getting more and more desperate. You shuttered, struggling to find the source of the sound exactly. Your whole body buzzed with a strange vibration that shook you awake. Slowly your eyes opened as the calling faded away. You expected to see him, but he was gone.

The bright light of the hospital room hit you first. Your vision so blurry you could hardly make out shapes, it was all a mess of colors at first. You tossed your head from side to side. It was heavy, your body was so heavy. Where were you? What's going on? Where's Shigaraki? You just heard him. Where's Toga? She promised-

"She's awake!" Xavier shouted. You groaned. You heard him stand and shuffle around the room frantically. Running out of the room to call for your mother. No. No. This can't be right. No!

"Y/N! Y/N baby!" Your mother rushed in, falling to the side of the bed to hold your hand and give it a tight squeeze. You pulled your hand away the best you could. God, you felt so heavy. You could hardly see her face. Blinking helped your vision, but barley. You huffed with a whine as you brought your hands up to rub your eyes. Only for your left hand to be stopped by a handcuff attached to your bed frame. The loud 'cuclunk!' sound startled you at first. Then the dread seeped in.

"Mom? Mom what's this?" You whimpered. "What's going on?"

"Shhhh calm down baby, you're alright. You're safe!" She tried to reassure. But your head was too heavy, too tired to register and function properly. So you tugged again and again, trying your hardest to break through the cuffs and the metal bar surrounding your bed. When that didn't work, you tried to activate your quirk.

"My quirk- mom- mom what's happening? Where's my quirk?"

"Shhh baby you're safe now. The doctors just gave a little dose to calm your nerves and sooth your quirk like your meds do."

"No. No I don't want my meds. No I'm cured, I don't need them."

"Oh sweetie, they really hurt you bad didn't they?" Your mother looked down on you with pitty in her eyes. Her thumb traced over your forehead as she began to pet your head. You looked up in disbelief. Tears filled your eyes as you shook your head.

"No...No it wasn't like that you don't understand-"

"Oh." A deep voice spoke from the doorway. You looked up, your father stood there awkwardly dressed in a suit and tie. Clearly he had just come back from work. You froze. Your mother turned back to look at him, standing and walking over to address him. "You're awake. Good."

"I think its best if we have a moment alone right now." Your mother told him.

"What? No. What's going on? Why am in fucking handcuffs? Is there a doctor I can-"

"Shhhhh baby relax-"

"Don't 'shhsh' me! Tell me what the fuck is going on! Where am I!?"

"You're in the hospital, Y/N." Xavier cooed softly as he passed your dad to enter the room.

"No! Fuck you! Get the fuck out of here!" You shouted at him. He tried to approach the side of your bed, a sympathetic expression plastered over his face. You kicked your legs in defiance. Trying to shake off the heavy sick feeling. It made your head spin. Xavier stopped and shared a confused glance with your mother.

"Xavier, I think its best you leave us alone for a little while." Your father said as he placed a firm hand on the young man's shoulder. Less of a request, and more of a warning. He begrudgingly complied, turning to steal one last glance of your face before his expression turned sour.

"Toshinori, I can handle this."

"Can you?" You blurted. His voice was upsettingly firm. This was the first time you'd ever seen your father angry. Truly, angry. The room fell silent. You starred at him. His eyes slowly turning from the floor to your mother's bewildered face. "Can you handle this?" Softer now, but still upset.

"Excuse me?"

"Because as far as I'm concerned, you haven't been." Now he seemed weak. Sad even. Like he's a child finally standing up for himself. He was vulnerable, close to tears. "I'm sorry. I just-" He quickly wiped away his tears.

"Am I interrupting something?" A fourth voice spoke. You tossed your head against your pillow and gave a loud groan of disapproval. So many fucking people! Maybe this guy could give you answers.

"Not at all!" You shouted as you pulled at your restraints a few more times. Detective Tsukauchi took a few cautious steps into the room. Xavier watching behind him.

"Y/L/N, it's a pleasure to finally meet you." You looked between him and your parents.

"Who the fuck is this?"

"I am detective Tsukauchi, I am the lead detective on your case. I am happy to see you are, um, relatively well. Considering the circumstances."

"Are you going to tell me why I'm chained to my hospital bed or what?" You huffed.

"My apologies, but until we can make sense of everything that has happened, you are being placed in police custody."

"What!?" Your mother beat you to it. Her jaw hung loose and her brow scrunched up into her forehead.

"I did everything I could, but the more we process the series of events, it seems a kidnapping turned into a terrorist attack. Y/L/N, if I could speak with you, get the story from your perspective-"

"No." You blurted. "No. I don't want to talk about it."

"Y/L/N please-"

"Fuck off!" You screamed, using your free hand to throw a paper cup of water at the poor man. He bowed his head and apologized before ducking out of the room.

"Y/N-" your father whispered in disbelief.

"What!?" He froze. He starred at you. Still and unmoving, fear, confusion, upset written all over his sunken face. You felt no guilt, no apprehension, no anxiety about your behavior or your feelings. You were done with it all. You were done being the good child. The quiet child that did what she was told. You were done with it. Done with them.

"Uh, your wrist-" He croaked finally, his finger coming up to point at you. You looked down. Bruised and bloodied skin suddenly appeared to you beneath the handcuff. You had tugged so hard it broke your skin, and now that you were realizing it, it began to hurt. You stilled for a moment and watched the blood slowly drip onto the blanket.

"Fuck." You cursed as you went to tend to it.

"I'll get the doctor." Your mother rushed out of the room.

"Goddammit." You muttered as you pressed a piece of blanket firmly to stop the bleeding. Your eyes felt dry and hazy. Your chest heaved as your adrenaline rushed through you, making you feel uneasy and anxious. Restless. You could feel your bones vibrating underneath your skin and muscle. It made you nauseous. When the room stilled, you slowly looked back up at your father. His expression unchanged. "I meant what I said y'know. I still hate you." That seemed to startle him. "I hate you for never being around. I hate you for pretending I didn't exist. I hate you for leaving me alone with her. I hate you for ignoring all those years of abuse. You can't tell me you didn't know what was happening all this time. And even if you didn't, I don't know what's worse. Knowing Your ex was abusing your daughter and letting it happen, or being so distant and not apart of her life that you had no idea she was being abused in the first place. I'm not afraid to say it anymore, I'm not afraid to call you out. I don't care anymore. I won't go back to the way things were. I won't. I'd rather die." Hot tears fell down your red hot cheeks as you spoke. Soon he began to cry as well. It was silent for a moment. You could hear the clock on the wall loudly ticking away until you hear him loudly sniff.

"I know. You're right." He began to cry, sob even. "You're absolutely right. I thought what I was doing was going to protect you. I thought by staying out of your life that you'd be able to live free of all my messes. But that's not what you needed. You needed a father, and I wasn't there when I should have been. I know I have no right to ask you for forgiveness, but please, know that I am sorry. And from this point on I will do my very best to be the father you need. The father you deserved."

No. Shut up. SHUT UP. THATS NOT WHAT YOU WANT TO HEAR. You don't want to hear the sniveling fit from an old man you hardly know. Fuck him! And fuck his apology! It made your blood boil. You began to grind your teeth as he continued. It hurt. It hurt worse than anything you'd ever experiences. His apologies, his humble begging, his empathy, all of it. When he was finished you just starred at him. He waited for a response but none came. That was until the boiling of your blood spilling over and flowed from your mouth without any hesitation.

"Get out." You muttered.

"Y/N?" He gasped.

"Get. Out." He didn't respond, he looked stunned. "GET OUT. GET OUT! GET OUT GET OUT GET OUT GETOUTGETOUTGETOUTGETOUTGETOUT!" You screamed until your throat went hoarse. Doctors and nurses rushed in as you fit began. Followed by your mother as they slammed you against the hospital bed. You thrashed the best you could, doing whatever to took to get them off of you. But there were too many and you began to flow in and out of consciousness as the needled pressed a steady flow of drugs into your system once again. Soon your vision went black, and your body laid limp on the hospital bed.

The rest of the week felt like it was straight out of your nightmares. Strapped down to a bed to prevent you from hurting anyone or yourself. High half the time from all the pain killers and drugs they'd given you. Your quirk rendered useless now. Your mother and "boyfriend" dotting over you and repeatedly ignoring your cries for help. You'd started demanding that the nurses or security take them away and sometimes they would go, but other times they would just ignore you. The detective came back every day and every day you refused to answer his questions. You laid there night after night, your poor brain rattling around in your head as you dreamed of how things could have been different. If only you'd gone with them, if only you'd said something different, done something different you wouldn't be here right now.

Late one night you were awoken by a loud tapping at your hospital room window. From your bed you could see the window, a small, long window at the top of the wall. During the day you could see people's feet as they walked around outside. And now, you saw a pair of familiar shoes gentleness kicking at the glass to get your attention. Your heart jumped in your chest. You turned back to the door to make sure no one heard. It was late, so late there was hardly any staff there. So you sat up the best you could in bed and watched as Toga's goofy little grin slowly came into view. She came back for you.
