A year after TK & Carlos's wedding, TK's world fell apart when his father was killed during a fire call. TK relapsed, spiraling down into darker depths with his addiction than he'd ever been before. After trying and failing to convince TK he needed help, Carlos went to extreme measures to get TK into rehab.

This story begins on TK's first day in detox, and is initially told through letters that he writes to Carlos on his journey to get back home.

TK paced in the front lobby, his packed bag sitting on the floor. He'd woken up way too early that morning, eager to get packed and be on his way. The problem was, he didn't have much to pack, so he'd had to sit in his room and be anxious before breakfast and his last session with Lindsey. She'd helped him feel a little calmer, but he still had a lot of pent-up nervous energy as he waited for Carlos.

His flight had already landed, but with the Los Angeles traffic, there was no telling when he would get there. TK fiddled with the ring on his left ring finger and tried to envision his life once he left rehab. They were going to New York because TK needed that intermission before jumping back into life on Austin, but he also worried that the lack of any structure would be bad for him. After the first day, he would have to decide on a schedule, something to keep him grounded throughout the day outside of the controlled environment of rehab.

He and Carlos had done a lot of work over Carlos’s visit, but TK was still worried that resentment would bubble up in Carlos once they got home and back to their old routines. He wondered if he’d made the right choice in having Carlos come with him to New York. Maybe it would have been better for TK to have that adjustment time by himself and then go back to Austin to join Carlos in their normal environment. Or maybe they both needed this reprieve together.

Men are holding conferences to discuss how to have a child without a legal mother. Women opposed to surrogacy need to start organizing.

A national surrogacy organization will host a conference and expo—aimed at gay couples and individuals wishing to learn about surrogacy and gay parents that have already used surrogacy strategies—at Center on Halsted, 3656 N. Halsted St., from June 2-3.

New York City-based Men Having Babies (MHB) is organizing the event.

Yanir Dekel, MHB's Los Angeles-based Marketing & Social Media Coordinator, explained that MHB originated at New York City's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center, where a group of gay men wishing to become biological parents began meeting in the mid-2000's.

"Up until then, it was expected that you would adopt—doing [in-vitro fertilization] was something that lesbians would do," said Dekel.

The group began bringing in speakers who instructed participants on ethical surrogacy strategies. Around the world, surrogacy is tied into national and local rights issues—LGBTQ+ individuals might be prohibited from attempting surrogacy, for example, while women who become surrogates might have few legal rights.

MHB "wanted to be human-rights advocates and make our own families," Dekel said, adding that the group developed "out of the needs of the community. We're a community organization. We're not a surrogacy agency. We're a non-profit organization."

The urge to have biological children is a human trait from which gay men are often not exempt, he explained.

"They want to see their their genes moving forward," Dekel added. "For me and my husband, we wanted two kids, and with the same egg donor. One of them is my biological [child] and the other is my husband's. To me, I saw it as a biological connection between my husband and myself."

Some couples and individuals are motivated to choose surrogacy by the lack of control they would have were they to pursue adoption as their main route for having children.

"You have to wait for other people to want you—it's not a proactive thing that you can make happen," said Dekel. "People are waiting two or three years, and eventually become tired of waiting. They say, 'I want to have control over the process. I'm going to do it myself.'"

MHB generally has conferences in seven or eight locations nationwide, as well as in cities such as Brussels, Berlin, Taipei and Tel Aviv.

"We're going where people have need [for information," Dekel said. "In America, we're trying to expand our work. … We're trying to serve the community across the board."

An important part of MHB's advocacy is not only instructing the community about surrogacy, but keeping gay parents in social networks with one another.

"As a gay dad myself, I want my kids to see families that look like ours, and I want to hang out with gay men whom I can talk about gay stuff with—talking about Mariah Carey, for example," Dekel explained. "I cannot talk about that with straight guys."

Not to be that person, but genuinely, would you ever get back to finishing "Mind & heart, body & soul"? (I'm not saying it in a demanding way, just more in a curious way)

From your account and your posts, I've gathered that you've kind of moved on from making Malec contents for the time being, but that one fiction means so much to me, that I couldn't stop from asking you about it. I will regularly go to your AO3 just to check if you've updated :) and from the amounts of hits and kudos, I'm sure there are more people such as me, who are at least curious about the same.

If the answer is no, I'm just gonna sit down and day dream my own ending to it 🥹💀

hey! where I kind of got to with MHBS is: I went into it with minimal/no plan other than "get them to kiss eventually" and the plot totally spiraled out of my control 😂 in all honestly I probably should have wrapped it up after they got together properly. I unwound something that would take probably a lot of chapters to wind back together -- however, I hate that I've left it unfinished, so I do have a wrap-up chapter that I've slowly been picking through, that should hopefully leave them in a good place. It's a little bit open-ended, since there's no way I'm wrapping up this whole Malec vs the Clave plot in one chapter XD oops. I just want to leave Malec's relationship in a satisfying spot, and hopefully that little chapter would do so.

TK and Carlos are about to get messy in the next chapter of Somebody to Love.

Carlos put his hand on the back of the man’s neck and kissed him harder, even though the only pleasure he derived from it was the bittersweet taste of revenge.

“Carlos? What the hell?”

Carlos pulled back and turned his head. TK was standing behind him looking angrier than he’d ever seen him. He tugged on Carlos’s arm, trying to lead him away, but Carlos pulled back, escaping from TK’s grip. “Leave me alone, TK,” he said, his voice thick with hurt and anger.

The man he’d been dancing with stepped between him and TK and pushed him. TK reeled back, landing on his ass. Carlos turned and pushed the other man back. “Don’t touch him!” he growled.

The dancing man put his hands up in a show of surrender. “Whatever dude, I don’t want to get involved in whatever this is.” He backed away and disappeared into the crowd.

Carlos turned to TK, still furious. “What the hell, TK?”
