Why John Egbert could be a Bard of Heart (even though I know he is definitely not and never will be)

John has the potential to be a Heart player after years of like, being jaded and depressed hahaha. He doesn’t canonically actively repress his emotions like Gamzee (who failed that one time) or Dirk (who fails constantly), but instead he just… genuinely forgets about them lmao. When something comes up and he has to react maturely he does a decent job because emotions aren’t in the picture, normally because he dissociates and isn’t used to such situations, and he doesn’t even need to worry about actively *keeping them* out of the picture. It’s just how he is.

If John grew up in a household with a Dad like mine, who is still a serious sort of businessy man who shares those textbook heterosexual “be a man, do the mission, save the gal” movies with his son (this is a huge reason why John is so adamant about not being gay, he wants to be that textbook macho hetero hero), John would acknowledge his emotions a little more. This is because if Dadbert were like MY dad, he would always always always make sure to remind John to take his emotions into account and express them when the time is appropriate. I think Dadbert is a good communicator, he’s always reminding John how proud he is, but something about their relationship simply hasn’t taught John to acknowledge his emotions very much in canon. If he were to *actively* suppress them, wanting to be like the guys he sees in the movies, John would disregard his emotions on purpose instead of by accident, the way he does in canon.

Now he doesn’t do the multiple selves thing that Karkat and Dirk do, BUT in his journey as a Heart player that could easily be thrown in. John’s contempt for his softer, more pliable self who can potentially ruin everything if he lets himself *feel* at the wrong time... instead he tries to have the perfect maturity and self esteem of those movie heroes. I mean canonically he may act friendly and have big goofy overreactions, but that’s because he actively pushes that front, because he enjoys it. John doesn’t feel nearly as much as someone like Dirk or Karkat or Jade does. He literally forgets to. He’s numb. That’s why he doesn’t cry. That’s why he handled his Dad’s death better than Rose did with her Mom. That’s why he doesn’t hold grudges. That’s why he handles big-boy topics better than literally everyone in Homestuck, except maybe Karkat. Karkat is pretty damn good at that too because he has the power of empathy.

Oh, I think I remember Adventures in Drowsy Town! I must have been super young when I watched it, though, because I barely remember it.

So, a few things I remember:

The purple one had an amusement park called “Watcher World”. Pretty sure Hatchetfield has an amusement park by the same name on the edge of town, right?

I also remember (trying) to sing along with one of the songs in the show, I think it was the blue one singing it? I don’t remember the rest of the song but I know the main part of it was absolutely “La de dah dah day”.

i think in a screencap someone sent to me there was a rollercoaster viisble behind blinky... watcher world confirmed a real thing from that, i think! important

and right, la de dah day! whaddya mean trying? from what i remember it was.. scarily easy to sing along to that number, from what little i remmeber. barely even had to read the sing-along lyrics on screen. ig thats just good songwriting!

eddie walks into steve and his bedroom

eddie: so, i was thinking about something... steve? you awake?

steve lets out a small snore, answering eddie's question.

eddie carefully slides steve's glasses of of his face, gently setting them down on the nightstand.

he takes the LOTR book out of steve's hands and sets it down next to his glasses.

eddie lies down next to steve and falls asleep.

of course, when eddie opens his eyes, steve along with his glasses and book are gone.

steve leaves for work pretty early in the morning

eddie has a burning question that he can't get out of his head, so he decides to pay steve a visit at family video.

steve: hey!

eddie: hey, harrington.

steve: why does your face look like that? are you okay? what's wrong?

eddie: nothing! nothing.. i just... had a question.

steve: if it's about the coffee, i didn't have time this morning to make any-

eddie: what? no. have you um..

steve: spit it out

eddie: have you ever thought of leaving hawkins?

steve: no? where is this coming from?

eddie: i've been thinking about it for a few days. it wouldn't be permanent. just for a week or two. i mean, haven't you ever wondered what the world looks like outside of indiana?

steve: what if something happens with the upside down and the kids need me? if im a state away, how will i-

eddie: no. don't start with that. steve, the upside down hasn't been a problem in three years. the kids will be fine. the only thing holding you back is yourself!

steve: but i've never left hawkins.

eddie: that's the point!

steve: robin would have to cover my shift for however long we would be gone.

eddie: why don't buckley and wheeler come with? a road trip.

robin, looking away from nancy: what?

eddie: you two wanna get out of hawkins?

nancy: we totally should!

steve: but, a lot could go wrong, like what if one of the kids get hurt or our house burns down, we have two cats! who would watch them?

eddie: max already agreed to watch them. i gave her $50.

robin: steve, stop being so scared. it'll be fun.

nancy: we should go to orlando! i went there with my family once and it was fun. plus, they have a bar by the pool at this one hotel-which is beautiful-and it has the most incredible rooms, and it's right in the midst of everything.

eddie: steve, what do you say?
