I created 9 pieces for AARP, illustrating "Chase: A Michael Bennett Story" by James Patterson and Michael Ledwidge.

This was one of the first commissions I got after graduation and the largest one among them. I had a blast creating this series as I've always been a big fan of the Thriller/Mystery genre, and painting these pieces felt like I was directing a detective show of my own!

On government shutdowns and border security concerns. And history...

Just a little more than five years ago - and just a few short months prior to Jon Stewart taking Congress to task on behalf of the 9-11 first responders - Colorado Senator Michael Bennett took to the floor of his chamber to call out Senator Ted Cruz - and rightfully so! - for Ted's and his party's "crocodile tears" over the plight of the first responders...

This was in the second half of the Trump presidency with a lot of other controversy happening at the same time. Michael details a lot of it in his speech in the video that follows. To recap in advance...

Congress was in the midst of the 2018-2019 shutdown - the longest in its history - which Trump would proudly and repeatedly claim as of his own doing. It also followed the failure, in Republican hands, of a large, drawn out border security package from the previous summer. All of which, again, Senator Bennett points out. And then some!

"Turkey Lurkey Time," Cast of Promises, Promises

Yes! Waited all year to post this one. The legendary Donna McKechnie, the amazing Julane Stites and Baayork Lee, and the company of the show leave nothing in the locker room. You could power a small city with the energy generated on this stage (although, apparently, you couldn't get the deadass audience out of its seats when it ended).

I'm not prone to hyperbole, which I should've said more hyperbolically, but this, choreo'd by Michael Bennett, is one of the best dance numbers in any stage musical I've seen.

September 29, 1987: A memorial for Michael Bennett is held at the Shubert Theatre.

The YouTube video description says this was held on July 27, which was the originally scheduled date. It was moved to September 29 at 3pm, also the evening of the first preview of Into the Woods.

A Chorus Line (1985). Hopefuls try out before a demanding director for a part in a new musical.

I actually didn't know that much about A Chorus Line beyond it's fame on Broadway before watching this, but the movie felt tonally jarring even before finding out that Richard Attenborough swapped an apparently deeply cynical tone for a frothy optimism instead. The way this positions the stories of these characters - which range from awkward to deeply tragic - and the choreographer's request that they sell those stories for a chance, feels just totally at odds with itself. It's a bummer in and of itself, but funnily enough it does make me want to catch it on stage. 5/10.
