Our team had a fantastic time as they explored the Toy Fair 2024, got sneak peeks at some exciting new releases, met up with some famous faces (looking at you Ninja Turtles!) and of course caught up with our brilliant clients exhibiting at the show.

The Toy Fair is the UK’s largest dedicated toy, game and hobby event and this year’s 70th anniversary was, by all accounts, a roaring success!

Page 1. ---- Appear in Court After Capture in Store Last Night. ---- ONE MADE ESCAPE CAPTURED LATER --- Trio Were Found Carrying Varied List of Weapons. ---- Special to The Journal. CORNWALL, Ont., Feb. 14. Seven years in Portsmouth Penitentiary, with 20 lashes, was the sentence imposed upon three local youths, the eldest of whom is 19, in Police Court today when they were charged with armed robbery. In addition, two concurrent terms of three years in the penitentiary were imposed for shop-breaking.

Two of the boys, Herman Laprade. 19, and Leo Dion, 16, were arrested last night when police found them in the tobacco store of J. T. Lawn.

John Dion, 17, who was on watch at the time, escaped, but was apprehended this morning.

The serious charge against the trio arose out of the holding up of Michael Mulhern, a local grocer, last week. The trio were carrying revolver, sheath knives and brass knuckles when arrested.

They admitted perpetrating a series of four, burglaries in Cornwall in the past two weeks.

Sentenced at 11 o'clock this morning, the boys were on their way to the penitentiary at 12.

[AL: Laprade was in fact 20, single, from Lancaster, Ontario, and was covered in tattoos, including various flags, eagles, anchors, doves, mother, horse shoes, dagger & banners, cowgirls, forget me nots, hearts and anchors, and other sailor’s signs - he worked on lake ships and had no criminal record, but his uncle was at KP as well. He was convict #1600 at Kingston Penitentiary, was in cell 2 B, Prison of Isolation,  and worked in coal and wood gang. He supported the 1932 strike and riot, demanding cigarette papers, hair cut properly and a mirror and comb, better dental work, concerts and recreation, two letters a month. He felt “a man should get more money when he leaves and a better suit of clothes.” A troublemaker throughout 1933, he calmed down and was eventually sent to Collin’s Bay in mid-1935, before being paroled in late 1936.

Leo Dionne was actually 16, single, was from Cornwall, was a farm hand, and had served a term in the St. John’s Industrial School and Guelph Reformatory. He was convict #1601 at KP and worked first in the blacksmith shop and No. 1 stone shed. He supported the 1932 riot, demanded cigarette papers, tobacco every five days, recreation indoors and outdoors, and two letters or more a month. He was involved in trafficking several times, but eventually ‘smarted up’ and earned remission to secure his release by May 1935. He would be back on another charge in 1936.

His brother John, 17, single, also from Cornwall, and covered in tattoos as well, include a nude woman, flag, sailor boys and sailor girls, anchors, and a maple leaf. He had some juvenile convictions but no serious prison terms. At Kingston Penitentiary he was convict #1602 and worked in the Tailor Shop. He also supported the October 1932 riot, and made demands for cigarette papers, tobacco, “milk on the porridge, more fried meats,” “our own dishes” (for sanitary reasons), more exercise, no hair cutting, “Dis-Establishment of shackles” used in punishments and “...more amusements.” He was transferred to Collin’s Bay in August 1933 and paroled March 1934.]

Lebanon 32 Ireland 14 RLWC 2022 : Ireland fell to a crushing defeat at the hands of Lebanon as their Rugby League World Cup dreams were shattered in the Leigh Sport Village.

Reece Robinson was the first to get over for a try for Lebanon and Mitchell Moses added the extras.

It worsened for Ireland just two minutes later as Jacob Kiraz benefitted after Ireland fell foul to ill discipline and conceded another penalty within their own 30 metre line.

Brandon Morkos added Lebanon’s third try just before half-time but Ireland did at least respond before the break as Louis Senior skipped over for the Wolfhounds’ first try. The extras were missed and that made it 20-4.

Lebanon head coach Michael Cheika, speaking to BBC Two:

“It was a bit scrappy at times. You clearly saw two teams who were nervous playing in a very important game.

“We stuck to the fundamentals well, I wasn’t too happy we lost our heads a little bit. I thought Ireland would try and rough us up a little bit, we lost a bit of our way there and that’s when we made some mistakes.

“But all in all, really pleased. Now we’ve got to finish the job off to qualify against Jamaica. How we prepare over the next seven days will decide if we get through or not.”

Head-to-head

Lebanon have never lost to Ireland in their three previous meetings, drawing twice and winning once.

Their last encounter was in 2009, when Lebanon recorded a 40-16 win in Bridgend and this will be the first time they’ve faced each other at the Rugby League World Cup.

Ireland record

Ireland first qualified for the Rugby League World Cup in 2000 as co-hosts, registering their best performance to date of fifth place.

They have featured in every tournament since, coming ninth in 2017 after failing to advance from their group, despite two wins over Wales and Italy.

They are in fine form winning their last three men’s internationals by an aggregate score of 115-14.

Lebanon record

The 2017 Rugby League World Cup was just the second time the Cedars have qualified for the tournament.

Mitchell Moses put in a Player of the Match performance in their opening game to claim their first ever win, a 29-18 victory over France.
