Schaakbestuur Kaslan bij acclamatie herkozen

Het huidige bestuur van de Surinaamse Schaakbond (SSB) onder leiding van Marlon Kaslan keert terug. Dit besluit namen de leden zondag tijdens de algemene ledenvergadering met bestuursverkiezingen als hoofd agendapunt. Kaslan en medebestuursleden werden in het Denksport Centrum bij acclamatie gekozen. Volgens de statuten van de SSB duurt de zittingstermijn 2 jaren. Met het besluit van de leden krijgt het bestuur mandaat om het huidige beleid te continueren. Kaslan zegt in gesprek met Keynews dat de bestuursleden Michael Rozenblad (commissaris toernooien) en Vincent Kenswil (commissaris public relations), zich vanwege persoonlijke redenen niet herkiesbaar hebben gesteld. De vacante posten moeten zo snel als mogelijk aangevuld worden. Het streven is om binnen 2 weken nieuwelingen te verwelkomen. Het bestuur heeft echter nog geen kandidaten op het oog. Behalve Kaslan stelden zich Govind Panchoe, Jerry Pawiro, Rosangela Dos Ramos en Reyna Frijde zich opnieuw herkiesbaar. Volgens de SSB-topman zal er een herverdeling van de functies plaatsvinden. Voor de ALV bekleedde Panchoe de post als ondervoorzitter, Dos Ramos als secretaris, Frijde penningmeester en Pawiro commissaris opleidingen. “Op dit moment zijn de posten nog niet verdeeld. Het afwachten is op de nieuwe leden.” Kaslan wist dat de huidige leiding herkozen zou worden, aangezien er geen tegenkandidaten waren. Het opnieuw herkiesbaar stellen heeft te maken met het willen realiseren van een aantal doelen die nog niet van de grond zijn gekomen. Volgens Kaslan zijn bepaalde doelen deels uitgevoerd, zoals district schaak. “Wij moeten nog heel wat districten aandoen.” Het uitbreiden van het schaak instructeurs bestand was ook niet geheel verwezenlijkt. Volgens de bestuurder had dit voornamelijk te maken met een tekort aan financiën en tijd. De SSB-leiding wil in haar 2e zittingstermijn meer promotie voor schaken maken door middel van districtschaak, scholenschaak en TV-schaak. “Hiermee kunnen wij meer schakers interesseren en talenten ontdekken. En als je meer schakers hebt geïnteresseerd moet je ook meer instructeurs hebben.” Kaslan erkent dat 2 jaren niet voldoende zijn om doelstellingen te kunnen bewerkstelligen. Dit punt is tijdens de afgelopen ledenvergadering ook ter sprake gekomen, maar de alv moet beslissen of de termijn wordt verruimd of zo blijft. De SSB-preses zegt dat zo niet de alv wederom mandaat geeft. Een urgente doelstelling voor het huidige bestuur is het voor elkaar krijgen van een eigen speelruimte bij het Denksport Centrum. Kaslan gaat verder door te stellen dat de denksporten (Schaak, Dam- en bridgebond) eindelijk beheer van de locatie kunnen krijgen om hun activiteiten beter te kunnen ontplooien. Belgravia: The Next Chapter

With EPIX’s rebrand to MGM+, the  US channel also ordered a sequel series of Belgravia, subtitled: “The Next Chapter.” It remains to be seen if ITV is involved as they were with the original series, but at the very least they will like broadcast S2 in the UK, if not fully co-produce.

Premium network EPIX announced today that the network has greenlit Belgravia: The Next Chapter, a continuation of the hit historical drama named for—and set in—the affluent London district that became synonymous with the upper echelons of London society in the 19th century. Filming on the eight-part series will commence early next year in the UK, and it will premiere in the winter of 2023.

The series will pick up in 1865, 25 years after the events depicted in the 2020 limited series, which was written by Julian Fellowes (Downton Abbey) and based on his novel of the same name. Developed and written by Helen Edmundson (Dalgliesh, Mary Magdalene), it will tell the love story of Frederick Trenchard, who has grown up as the third Lord Glanville, and his new love interest, Clara Dunn, who is a newcomer to London society. The series reunites Julian Fellowes with  Carnival’s award-winning creative team—led by Gareth Neame— both Fellowes and Neames will serve as executive producers with Carnival’s Nigel Marchant and Joanna Strevens. Helen Edmundson serves as showrunner and executive producer. John Alexander (Small Island), who directed the original series, is lead director and executive producer. Colin Wratten (Killing Eve) who produced the original series will return as producer.

“With its cinematic scope, emotionally engaging story, and brilliant production design that brings the time period to life, Belgravia: The Next Chapter is an immersive story that will keep viewers riveted,” said Michael Wright, president of EPIX. “We can’t wait to see what Julian, Helen Edmundson and Carnival have in store for our audience.”

MicroStrategy negeert geruchten over verkoop van Bitcoin en geeft $6M uit aan 301 BTC

MicroStrategy heeft voor ongeveer 6 miljoen dollar nog eens 301 Bitcoins gekocht en negeert daarmee de zware storm die de cryptomarkt al bijna een jaar overspoelt. Volgens een dinsdag ingediend bij de Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) werden de Bitcoins gekocht tussen 2 augustus en 19 september 2022, tegen een gemiddelde prijs van $19.851 per eenheid, wat het totale bezit van het bedrijf op 130.000 Bitcoins brengt. De aankoop, die werd gedaan met overtollige cash van het bedrijf, plaatst MicroStrategy's totale BTC-waarde nu op ongeveer $3,98 miljard tegen een gemiddelde prijs van $30.639 per bitcoin. Science’s edict that ‘only evidence counts’ grossly violates the same principle. As we’ve seen, physicists consider the aesthetic evaluation of theories to be highly informative, and there are few or no practical obstacles to using beauty as a measure of a theory’s plausibility: to any thinker who takes the time to understand a theory’s workings, an appraisal of its beauty comes more or less unbidden. They have the envelope, as it were, in their hands. Yet science seizes it and throws it away: it forbids any reference to the content of the envelope when a scientist formulates and publishes arguments for their theories. What is logically objectionable, let me emphasise, is not that scientific deliberation prefers empirical evidence to aesthetic thinking. There is no need to choose one or the other; you can have both. You can privilege the evidence, the ‘hard facts’ as much as you like, especially as they accumulate and approach incontrovertibility. The principle of total evidence has no problem with that. All it says is that you must also, if you think aesthetics provides some useful intelligence, take beauty into account. But science says you must ignore it completely, regardless of how important you take it to be. Or more exactly, you must ignore it in your professional contributions, your publications. That’s what’s irrational.

The importance of aesthetic thinking in physics is, I am sure, well known to many readers. Many will also have a sense that beauty is not enough; to support a theory, scientists demand empirical evidence such as that produced by the deep scattering experiments. As Greene puts it: ‘Aesthetic judgments do not arbitrate scientific discourse, however. Ultimately, theories are judged by how they fare when faced with … hard experimental facts.’ What perhaps fewer readers grasp is that aesthetic appeals are not so much confined to a subsidiary role in scientific argument as they are banned outright. That is the force of the ‘only’ in ‘only empirical evidence counts’. The form of this ban is rather subtle. As Greene observes, scientists are in no way discouraged from following the trail of beauty in their private thinking, nor from discussing this strategy in popular talks and books. Where beauty may not venture is in the arena of professional scientific debate: scientific journal articles and conference papers. There, you might find the occasional remark about the elegance of an explanation, but no one builds a case for or against a theory even partly on aesthetic considerations. Though the proponents of the new ‘post-empirical physics’ would like to change this rule, they have yet to gain much ground. The principle stands: every argument must be constructed entirely on the grounds of empirical evidence. There is something very peculiar about this. On the one hand, beauty is held up as a guiding light. If we take Weinberg at his word, then it is simply impossible for a theory that lacks beauty to be correct. Ugliness is a decisive refutation. On the other hand, this same quality that physicists consider to be so revelatory is wholly excluded from science’s official dialogue. Science seems to be saying: yes, attending to beauty is exceptionally helpful and, also, we should pay no attention to beauty.
