A few days ago, I got a tattoo of the last line in The Legend of Korra. After several years of considering how I wanted to honor the place this show has in my heart, I decided that it was going to happen this year. It’s in the font from the end credits of TLOK, and I’m quite pleased with it, especially the placement and sizing.

This is also a good time to reflect on how much Korrasami and The Legend of Korra mean to me now that I’ve got this thing on my body forever. Korra is one of my favorite characters of all time. From the moment she appeared on screen in episode one as a hotheaded, physically imposing female protagonist, I felt like I was seeing someone like me in media for the first time. We not only get to see her be an absolute powerhouse, even for an avatar, but we also see what makes her human. Korra’s journey throughout the show’s four seasons embodies the human experience, and the lessons she learns, her struggles and triumphs, are parts of life that connect us all on some fundamental level.

I love TLOK for being everything ATLA is not. The Legend of Korra is messier, rougher around the edges, and shows us that the way forward isn’t always clear. However, we see Korra grow tremendously from her mistakes, and when she finally finds herself, she’s ready to face the world as a fully fledged avatar. While this is the ending for the show, it is also a new beginning.

Now for Korrasami. I remember finding out about Korrasami online when the third season was airing. I was instantly taken by the idea of Korra and Asami together. Despite their rocky start, they were fast friends and had great mutual admiration and respect for each other. I saw that they made a natural team, balancing each other out whether they were building a makeshift sandsailer or training as sparring partners, and I became invested in how close they grew during the third season. Later, the intense moments they share throughout the season culminate in a tender one as Asami tends to Korra before Jinora’s ceremony, and we get our first insight into just how deeply they care for each other.

During the time between seasons 3 and 4, I held my breath. I wasn't in a hurry for the final season to air and end this moment where we could all just dream that Korrasami was going to be endgame. While it felt like their relationship had been building towards something, like many fans, I didn't dare believe I would also be able to relate to my favorite character about who I loved. Besides, season 3 finale Korra had her own things to deal with first. It was later revealed that she only wrote letters to Asami during her time away, and their reunion (finally!) was a whirlwind of emotions (for both them and me). Caring about a relationship between characters was brand new to me, but boy, did I care about these two now. Season 4 made it clear that there was something more going on between them, and by the time we made it to the finale, I couldn’t help but have high hopes. Even though I knew a relationship like theirs had seldom made it into mainstream media, and even fewer had resulted in happy endings, it just felt like the conditions for a Korrasami ending were perfect. As I watched the entire final scene, my heart just about beat out of my chest. As I watched Korra and Asami walk towards the future hand in hand, I hoped the scene would never end.

I remember staying seated on the uncomfortable folding chair in my room in disbelief for a few minutes. My misty eyes were the only sign that the overwhelming sense of joy and relief hadn’t set in yet.

Seeing Korrasami become canon on 12/19/14 felt like I had won the lottery. Fans around the world felt it too. The internet exploded with teary reaction videos and celebratory fanart. We laughed and cried and felt connected to each other in a way that I will never forget.

@bryankonietzko and @michaeldantedimartino, thank you for making Korrasami a reality. It represents a chance at happiness that we all deserve and waited so long to see. It’s something that means so much to so many people, and I am proud to have a reminder of what this show means to me on me forever.

you guys want to tell me why katara and aang’s kid with the most screen time and development is pale as hell and has super white features... idk i think it’s just the colorism and racism, but there is an extra layer of anti-native sentiment with making tenzin, a mixed indigenous man, look white and then taking away all of his connections to water tribe culture because he isn’t indigenous enough (doesn’t have the “right skin tone” or bending type) for it. idk, it really is just one thing after the other with tenzin, not even touching on how inaccurate the portrayal of mixed people is 🤷🏽‍♀️

hey so remember how you guys made Lake Laogai? Well, in season 3 of TLOK you guys had an episode where the Earth Queen imprisoned air benders in an underground prison cell where they were used for her army - it sounds eerily similar to how the real life Lake Laogai has used Tibetans along with other Asian minority groups for forced labor and that they are going through genocide atm.

So you knew about their sufferings, put it in your show, and profited off of it.

And you didn’t even consider to think about how fucked up this is?

Kyoshi and Rangi: Yin & Yang

Two of the most explored and visibly represented Taoist concepts in the avatar universe is the yin-yang.

Describe the two opposing and complementary fundamental forces found in all things. Yin is the feminine principle, earth, darkness, passivity and absorption. Yang is the masculine principle, heaven, light, activity and penetration.

One of the points in which this concept is represented is in the Avatar's couple, that person who accompanies him/her on his/her way and will give amplitude to his/her way of seeing and understanding the world, as Avatar Yangchen said, the avatar incarnates as a human to live the human experience and thus be able to respect, understand and protect that humanity, and one of those experiences is both family, filial and romantic Love.

Avatar Kyoshi of bisexual nature who loves both men and women, she falls in love and chooses Rangi, both choose each other and represent the yin-yang, very different from each other they learn to live together, love each other, desire each other, support each other, be together in good times or bad , near or far, on the verge of death or in their moments of peace, thus forming a transcendental relationship; Yee sets them up for each other by giving a realistic and insightful example of how human relationships work.

Kyoshi represents yin tending to take a more neutral approach, its native element is earth, life situations have given it a darker perspective on the workings of the world, and then we have Rangi (she represent the yang) who is fierce, passionate and reactive, representing her native element the fire, but in her fierceness she keeps a soul full of light, the person who with her actions reminds Kyoshi that there is still goodness to rescue and protect in such a murky and corrupt world.

Although they are so different, they also share common points such as respect for order, justice, and a deep loyalty to their allies and loved ones; and although sometimes they do not agree with each other, they learn to find a middle ground between both opinions.

Beyond romance, their unity forms a loyal and untraditional family that transcends even in the distance and time. Definitely one of the most complete and developed couples in the avatarverse

Wait so in regards to a recent anonymous ask you answered (about your thoughts on avatar studios) you said that Bryke hadn’t responded to racism and colorism in the shows yet.

What’s the colorism and racism in the show? Ik there’s a lot in the fandom but is there actually any straight up in the shows? Just wondering, cause like, it would suck if my favorite shows were racist lol

well i won’t deny that there’s a ton of racism in the fandom, there’s also an insane amount of racism and colorism in the show itself. pretty much any show with poc characters created by white people is gonna have unchecked racism in it. avatar and and legend of korra were created by two white guys with absolutely no input from people from the cultures they drew inspiration from. i’m going to link some of the good atla/lok crit posts i’ve seen from people who are more qualified to talk about it than i am, and anybody can feel free to add on.

I’m still kind of mad that Bryke never confirmed wether or not Ty Lee was a descendant of airbenders or not. It makes SO much sense!

She has gray eyes, while usually people from the fire nation have amber or brown eyes. Guess which only other character has gray eyes too? Aang.

Ty Lee is an acrobat, and while yes, she did learn a lot at the circus, she was already very light on her feet and agile as a child. Y’know who’s also light on their feet and agile? That’s right: Aang.

In the atla comics it was confirmed that some airbenders escaped the mass genocide and hid out elsewhere, and Sozin (later Zhao tried the same with Aang) laid traps with special airnomad artifacts to lure the surviving airbenders. Those traps probably didn’t get all of them. What if some airbenders decided to hide out in the firenation, and fell in love and had kids there? What if, because the airbenders aren’t connected to their spirituality anymore after everything, those kids turned out to be non benders?

I just feel like this is some food for thought before the live action airs. I hope @bryankonietzko and @michaeldantedimartino consider this little detail to explore in the live action.
