Thoughts : Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar (2021)
Tumblr media
Here I am, just trying to do my due diligence in terms of covering the 2021 releases, and the inevitable occurred... I remember the promotional campaign for Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar, and while being a fan of both Kristen Wiig and absurdist comedies, I did not feel the magnetic attraction to this film that one would have assumed would be present.  As people’s year end lists started to roll out, I begin to notice that more than a few outlets had this listed as one of the better films of the year, so I put aside my doubts and assumptions and figured I’d give it a view... and, after all that... I’m still not sure what to think...
youtube
Let’s get the obvious out of the way first : this film is not only overly silly, but it is built upon a Jenga-like stack of the most random character elements that force the viewer to do possibly more suspension of disbelief than a comedy of this level requires.  Granted, I know we’re not dealing with Citizen Kane here, and with this being a property connected to the Saturday Night Live and Adam McKay camps, to take it seriously would be a fool’s errand, but there are easily two different absurdist comedies of drastically varying levels attempting to operate simultaneously for Barb and Star.  At the heart of things is a touching film about two friends (the titular Barb and Star) who are extremely codependent to one another, but in the process of them trying to collectively step outside of their shared comfort zone, the two find their own sense of personal liberation via individual discovery-laden journeys.  With this premise being the heart, that would make the soul of the film a wholly ridiculous espionage romp, complete with two supervillains, a feet on the ground lackey who doubles as a romantic interest, and a potential threat that could wipe a city off the map, which in this case is presented as deadly biologically-altered mosquitos.
All that being said, as disjointed and bonkers as this film is, there are definitely aspects that work at times.  Like some sort of non-existent SNL skit given license to expand on a simple premise (think It’s Pat, The Ladies Man, Coneheads, the Wayne’s World films or even MacGruber), the character work of Kristen Wiig (Star) and Annie Mumolo (Barb) becomes the foundation for a twisting and turning narrative full of possibilities and low on limits, and thankfully, the pair are able to take their grating Midwestern accents and mine them for all of the gold available.  Populating the world full of varying degrees of idiots is also a positive, as the intersectionality of communication that occurs between the different parties creates enough kinetic comedy to keep viewers on the hook.  While the comedy starts off innocent enough, by the second act we see some bold jabs at edgy humor, up to and including the extremely frank sexual talk throughout the film, the hidden curse words cobbled together by clever cutting, and quite frankly, the deep embracing of blue humor that comes on like a tidal wave as the film progresses.  In terms of technical merits, you can definitely see that there was money put behind this film, and while there are moments of high production value on all levels, the spirit of kitsch is embraced at any and all points possible.
Kristen Wiig gets her Tilda Swinton on, which is definitely one of the gold stars of the film (no pun intended)... as Star, Wiig falls right into the harmonic rhythm with Annie Mumolo that emulates a legion of classic comedy duos, while her performance as Sharon Fisherman is unique enough that even I didn’t recognize her for a large portion of the film due to the heavy makeup applied.  Annie Mumolo is not an actress I am very familiar with, so at the risk of disrespecting her accolades, she definitely holds her own in her shared moments with Wiig, and when alone, she manages to shine in her comedic time and infectious excitement.  Jamie Dornan provides a touch of Adam Scott energy in shades, but mostly commits himself to a hilariously pathetic and comedically rich devotion to Wiig’s Sharon Fisherman character, mining it for all that it is worth during that particular aspect’s arc.  Reyn Doi embraces being the cherry on top of the absurdist sundae, giving off a Nevel Papperman level child evil genius performance while still managing to exude levels of innocence that only a child can, particularly within the character’s physicality.  Damon Wayans Jr. makes the most of his moments, playing in and around the jokes with great zeal, but in all honesty, his character comes off as a bit of a satellite, or as the one ingredient too much in an already busy recipe.  Other standout supporting appearances include Kwame Patterson, Wendi McClendon-Covey, Vanessa Bayer, the always understated but hilarious Phyllis Smith, musical-comedy genius Richard Cheese, a super random Andy Garcia moment, a Reba McEntire cameo and a killer vocal performance from Josh Robert Thompson.
Barb and Star probably isn’t going to win any awards this year, and to be completely honest, I am surprised that it’s popping up on Best of the Year lists.  It’s not that it’s a bad movie... believe me, I’ve seen worse... but it’s also not the kind of movie that going to light a spark of interest in the general movie-going public.  As a Kristen Wiig devotee (in the best possible understanding of the definition), it took me a few separated sittings to finish this film, but when it was all said and done, I did find moments of enjoyment throughout.  Perhaps this will be another Anchorman or American Psycho situation, where my immediate reaction may differ from possible future embracing and enjoyment of the film.  If you’re looking for something completely silly to distract you from rough an hour and half of your day, then give it a watch for sure.  If you take your movie watching seriously or only have time for Kino cinema, I’d skip this one.

We just can't get enough of #JaneLynch being part of the #ImperialCollection of #AutographsForTheAges. "What is their relationship?" Some people will pry into anything these days. "Are they experimenting," some wonder aloud. Well, my DVD copy of #BestInShoe is also signed by #FredWillard & #MichaelHitchcock. #ChristopherGuest, like John Waters, features many of the same actors in several of his #Comedies. The #NeuroticDogOwners do seem a trifle #WayBeyond. The #EnsembleWork is particularly #DiamondSharpBrilliant here. I put my admission on Facebook about my initial viewing experience. Sooo Indiana. Here's another treat: it rated #PG13, #ParentsStronglyCautioned. What does that mean? That the #Dogs have more class & Intelligence than Donald Trump? He should be in this film, except that he's not smart enough to be funny. Seen @ the #FirstAnnualCanineFilmFestival, October #2006 @ the #CastroTheatre. (at Castro Theatre)

High, How are you? With errands to run, a young actress accidently eats some special brownies, and hilarity ensues, of course. #RoscoeLeeBrowne’s voiceover/narration at the beginning👌🏼and the opening credits animation - ohhmyyyy.... It was like a female counterpart to Dude, Where’s My Car? um, also OJ and tostitos? barf in my mouth a little bit🤢 Masterson as Steve the roomate was creepy (especially the skullfucking) - he also needed to lay off the exclamation points and underlining, like whoa. #AdamBrody’s pot dealer 😆 the dreads, the clothes, the tattoos... The “Jane’s Plan” montage was funny and her backing the car out of the parking space, on the bus and at her audition, the photos and explanations of who she’s calling on the phone, Jane and Brevin’s history montage were all hilarious, as were both young #AnnaFaris’ and #JohnKrasinski’s facial expressions, the reason why Brevin kept his wallet in his glove box and when he asks her how much she needs 😆, her “revised plan” montage, and the expectation vs reality of her speech at the (meat packing?) plant. I would buy this one if I found it somewhere. #DannyMasterson #BenFalcone #BrianPosehn #JimRash #JaneLynch #MichaelShamusWiles #MarionRoss #MichaelHitchcock #JohnCho #DannyTrejo #RichardRichle #CarrotTop #DaveAllen #ChadMountain #comedy #ssmovieof2017 writers: #DylanHaggerty (written by) director: #GregAraki movie of 2017 number 30) #SmileyFace

Thoughts : Serenity (2005)
Tumblr media
A blog could probably be written about shows that were taken off of the air before their time.  Most anyone who is a fan of TV has a show that they wish survived the corporate chopping block for a complete series run.  In all my years, however, there is only one franchise that I’ve ever seen end prematurely, only to be given a feature film.  The series was Joss Whedon’s sci-fi gem Firefly, and the film that gave the franchise its proper (yet bittersweet) send-off was Serenity.
In the 26th century, humanity has been forced to spread out across the galaxy in order to survive.  The inner ring of planets are ruled by the Alliance, a powerful ruling entity that fought against and defeated the Independents, who now mostly hustle to survive on the outer planets and the edges of the black.  Simon Tam (Sean Maher), a young doctor, has exhausted his family fortune to rescue his sister River (Summer Glau) from Alliance control, where they have down psychic experiments on her in hopes of creating an assassin.  The siblings find refuge on Serenity, a ship captained by Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion), an Independent through and through with a penchant for living dangerously to survive.  The Tams attempt to find their place among Mal’s crew : first mate Zoe Washburne (Gina Torres), pilot ‘Wash’ Washburne (Alan Tudyk), heavy artillery aficionado Jayne Cobb (Adam Baldwin), and young mechanic Kaylee Frye (Jewel Staite).  Little does the crew know they are being hunted by the extremely dangerous Alliance assassin simply known as the Operative (Chiwetel Ejiofor) who has intentions on bring River back to Alliance control.  As the crew of Serenity struggles to find balance among themselves, they must fight off the threat of the Operative, while soon realizing that River and her yet unleashed abilities will lead them to Miranda, the edge of the universe, and realities they cannot prepare to face.
Updating the cowboy narrative to fit into the context of space, while not an original Joss Whedon idea, is one that he executes with masterstrokes.  His balance of mixing techno-jargon, colloquial speech patterns and Chinese makes for dialogue that is equal parts futuristic and rustic, helping to enhance the experience of the world that the characters roam.  Honor is a key element to most of the narratives, though morals are not always necessarily part in parcel with said honor.  Ultimately, the aesthetic of flying by the seat of your pants, doing whatever it takes to survive, and living off of the skill set (and reputation) the lifestyle provides you fits the world of Serenity quite nicely.
The film does a good job of wrapping up most of the major narrative threads introduced in the Firefly series while managing to not fall victim to indulgence.  Fan favorite characters like Saffron or Early Grace do not make appearances, but the expected touchstones are all hit : River Tam and what causes her odd behavior, the unrequited love/tension between Mal and Inara, the thick attraction between Simon and Kaylee, and (possibly most importantly) the ever present threat of the Reavers given just focus and attention.  Characters we have grown to love over the short run of the series meet grim fates, while others grow and flourish into fuller versions of themselves.
Bigger and better would be the key synonyms used to describe the film.  The special effects and cinematography style introduced in the series is given the Hollywood sheen it so rightfully deserved, down to subtle details like the ability to traverse Serenity via steadycam, giving us a true feel for the size and geography of the ship we’ve grown to know and love.  New characters are introduced that provide greater scope, specifically the aforementioned antagonist the Operative, as well as a wonderful appearance by David Krumholtz as Mr. Universe, the key to connective communication throughout the vastness of space.  The action is even ramped up to the highest degree, be it River’s sudden ability to dispatch a room full of threats, or the dynamic final battle in space that must be seen to be believed.
The crew of the Serenity bring their collective A-game back to the table for this last round of glory.  Nathan Fillion is as sharp as ever, bringing his misbehaving nature that melds with his code of honor to the forefront for the proceedings.  Gina Torres continues to be the foundation of the ship, while Alan Tudyk keeps the levity going while bringing forth acts of courage much needed to round out the love we all have for Wash.  Jewell Staite amplifies the charm to ridiculous levels while showing an edge not previously allowed for her network portrayal.  Adam Baldwin slightly tones his role down, but to great effect, bringing a balance to the overall crew, and a sense of imminent blow-up possible from his character.  Sean Maher reels back his nature of standing in opposition just so slightly, allowing Summer Glau’s character portrayal to finally take the front seat it truly deserves.  Chiwetel Ejiofor is wholly compelling in his antagonist role, while David Krumholtz finds dynamic ways to serve up exposition.  A short appearance by Ron Glass helps ground the overall tone of the desperate times and measures taken.
While bittersweet, it is nice to know that the powers that be allowed Serenity to occur, giving many fans a taste of closure that most fans of cancelled programming never get to see.  Of all the space dramas that exist, this is one that will always hold a special place for me.
