first time i watched gravity falls i was like “wow so much detail! the mysteries are great and it’s like one big puzzle and so much time attention and detail went into this!” and then listening to the podcast they’re like “we wrote this episode in 3 days with 2 hours of sleep across those days it was fueled by coffee and nightmares and we stumbled into the office and pitched the whole thing and then collapsed as soon as we left the room”

So, I’m normally not one to come on here and gush about the movie I just watched, but The Mitchells vs. the Machines was just a super fun movie, and it had some pretty good rep. The plot is your basic family survives the apocalypse (robots, in this case), but it is done well. I’m terrible at synopsis’ so I’m going to leave it at that, for fear of spoiling. The animation is fantastic, though. The characters are all unique and expressive, and it’s quirky as hell and kind of memie. Super cute overall.
The son, Aaron, (voiced by Micheal Rianda) is autistic, but not, like, superhero autistic, which is kind of what you expect in this this genre. He’s just a kid who perseverates on dinosaurs, chews on his shirt, and has a few other quirky moments throughout the show. He’s never shown as anything but a normal kid, but at the same time, like, his whole family knows he’s not “normal”. It’s a nice change of pace in autism rep.
The daughter, Katie, (voiced by Abbi Jacobson) is queer. At the beginning of the movie, she’s shown to have a girl crush, then the apocalypse happens. In the epilogue, she’s talking to her mom and it’s indicated that this relationship may be getting more serious. It’s not a romance movie, though. I’m not sure how to feel about this. It almost feels tokenistic. They could have cut the whole relationship out without effecting the plot. On the other hand, it’s really cute, and her parents are super supportive of her, so good for them? She also wears a rainbow pin the entire movie.
Overall, good show. I would recommend it to anyone looking for some dumb fun. 🙂

Forefront Post 4: Mitchell versus the Machines
Sony continued its new trend of stylized animated films with its latest feature, Mitchell versus the Machines (2021) which was released on Netflix. It’s an excellent movie in every sense and you would struggle to find a negative review anywhere.
Visually, the movie is a masterpiece as it just so good to look at with its doodle style character design and hand painted watercolor like textures.

Visual effect supervisor, Micheal Lasker explained that the animation style was based on two notions/themes. Firstly, the theme of flaws in humanity informed the decision of using an animation style that simulated a hand-drawn illustration, with organic shapes and watercolor textures (Oddo, 2021). An example of the breathtaking textures and colors can be seen in the fabric of the clothes. Instead of creating realistic 3D rumples on the clothes, they instead added a texture of hand-painted scribbles over the fabric giving the watercolor effects. The same techniques were applied in the background particularly the trees and grasses which made them look like water color paintings.

Secondly, Katie who is the main protagonist, is a film maker and it felt like sometimes they were telling the movie from her film maker perspective. It seemed liked they let Katie draw over the movie to express her emotions. The 2D doodle drawing over the 3D can be seen represents Katie’s chaotic mind.

As explained by Matt Goldberg for Collider, ‘ It’s like she’s the third director of the movie, and that allows us to connect further with her life, emotions, and situation’ (Goldberg, 2021. P. 5).
According to Lasker (Oddo, 2021) who also worked on the visual effects in Spiderman: into the spider-verse, one of the key differences was that unlike Spiderman where they used comic books as inspiration, they had to make a new style from afresh which aligned with the theme afresh. This new style involved a new tool which was used tool for the textures, outlines and visual effect. This new tools were an adaption of the ones Lasker created for Spiderman: into the spider-verse.
So while Spiderman: into the spider-verse looked like an animated comic books, Mitchell versus the machines (2021) looks like animated doodles.
The main take way for me from the animation style and art direction was how Mitchell vs the Machines pushed the boundaries of animation using innovative techniques to make the animation style to reflect the theme and mood of the movie. I found this particularly innovative and is something I’ll look to employ as I make movies.

The most exciting job offer was when I got an e-mail in my inbox from Dr. Dre. Like seriously, in my inbox under the "from" category it said Dr. Dre. He was looking to develop some TV shows. I was imagining a beautiful scenario where me, Dr. Dre, and Snoop Dogg somehow become best friends and hang out all day, go to strip clubs, smoke weed, and drive in escalades. But I turned the D-R-E down for Gravity Falls.
