Reading & Rec List of the month
Since I didn't read anything Irish-themed this month, I thought I could at least make this end-of-March rec list a little green!
Supernatural Fanfics
Something like that an untitled drabble by @chapeldean (Dean & Charlie)
Untitled therapy drabble: a conversation between Sam and Dean, set after 15 x 18, by @starcrosseddeancas
As a captive: a rewrite of Appointment in Samara by silver_penny that is ethereal and makes you reflect on life and death. (Dean, Death, Tessa)
Are You Okay: a short fluff piece about a hunt gone slightly wrong written by @octoberclidan (Dean x Reader)
Helping: love this canon slice of life by @starlitesky set late in Kelly's pregnancy (Castiel & Kelly)
They were roommates: Drunk Cas cannot hold his tongue about anything including his feelings. A fun little Sastiel piece by @posingasme (Castiel x Sam)
What Goes Around Don't Come Around (or Maybe It Does): The light and the warmth that Crowley deserves by @rauko-creates that I discovered thru the First Sentence Game (Dean x Crowley)
In the Woods (Soulless!Sam edition): by @amemipiacitu. Castiel is still captive, and Dean is still mute, but this version of the story is darker than anticipated. First chapter was written for the Weekly Prompt Challenge (WPC) of the Fanfic Lounge.
Plain sight: AU about a kidnapping that has a lot of twists and turns for a shorter fic! By @luci-in-trenchcoats (Dean x Reader)
Untitled outline by @queerstudiesnatural where Dean uses his words as much as he can… This is lovely 🥰 (Dean x Castiel)
Untitled Lily Saunder pitch set after 15x18 by @sailorsally that gives me Little Mermaid’s vibes (Dean x Castiel)
Prompted: a reread because @bobwess is a master at bloody hurt/comfort short stories (Dean x Castiel)
Tumblr media
Not related to Supernatural
Microfiction about someone (Anghim) fond of climbing ☺️ by O. Westin /@microsff
Murdered by Mr Hand Man: My first My Hero Academia fanfic read! (I don't even watch the show or read the mangas..) Shigaraki Tomura coming into the real world to murder you. By dino_boy on AO3. Courtesy of the Fanfic Lounge WPC.
Nobody Likes The Duke Of The North: A fic also written for the @fanficlounge by @verobatto that I should have read a little sooner, but that I discovered thru the First Sentence Game (Original work)
I also started to read two paper books: American Gods by @neil-gaiman and Douze coups de théâtre by Michel Tremblay (around 20 of his stage plays are available in English I don't know about his novels, tho).
Have a good time, and make new friends between the pages!

Tres Belle Belles
The Stratford Festival production of Michel Tremblay’s masterpiece Les Belles-Soeurs, superbly directed by Esther Jun featuring Lucy Peacock & Seana McKenna, along with a cast of another 15 women, is amazing. I saw a production of this play in the early 80’s but my memory was only of the basic action: pasting stamps into booklets.  Wait, “pasting stamps” you think? Yes ‘pasting stamps’ was…

Not quite as many as January, but still not bad! A better mix of genres, though it's interesting that I read mainly romance in January, and not as many in February.
I have a few still going (Wool, Head Like a Hole, A Light in the Dark, Never Caught, others probably), that I will hopefully finish up in March.

Notes :
all links lead to the goodreads page of the book, mostly because i like to look at book cover art ;
list features authors/books that i love (T. Kingfisher, Silvia Moreno-Garcia, Ursula K. Le Guin, the collections from the British Library Tales of the Weird, etc.), but also a few that i don't like and some that i have not yet read ;
if upon seeing that list the first novel you check out is by Stephen King's you have not understood the assignment ;
not all of those are strictly horror stories, some are 100% science fiction (Brian W. Aldiss' Hothouse for instance).

top 9 books
oh god this is me exposing myself as an "almost exclusively fic reader" i am so sorry dsfkjbdfsdfs. i tried to make a list!!! also some of these aren't even in english i'm sorry again? i used to read a lot more as a kid/teen but once i stumbled onto fanfics it was over for me. anywayyyy, thank you @gayarthur and @eddiebabygirldiaz for tagging me! this is in no particular order, just some that have stayed with me over the years for various reasons:
vampire academy series by richelle mead
heartstopper series by alice oseman (can i include graphic novels??)
pays sans chapeau by dany laferrière
persepolis by marjane satrapi (can i include comics???)
red, white and royal blue by casey mcquiston (literally the only book i've read, with heartstopper, in the past couple years lol yikes)
silverwing series by kenneth oppel (it's just sooo nostalgic for me)
the sisterhood of the traveling pants by ann brashares (also very nostalgic)
cassiopée: l'été polonais by michèle marineau
les belles soeurs by michel tremblay (do plays even count lmao??)
listen. i know i need to read more books. and i swear i have actually read a lot as a kid/teen, it's just that a lot of them weren't that memorable i guess? sdfkjdsfbn. and also a lot of what i've read is actually french canadian stuff, soooo. i do read fics everyday tho, if that helps.... 🤡 gotta take some notes and make a to read list tbh
hmm for tags what about @paperstorm @tawaifeddiediaz @oliverstaark @disasterdiaz @aziraaphales @evelyns @henwilsons @laurabenanti @bellamyblakru @lightasthesun @rewritetheending @nymika-arts (no pressure, as always)

Favourite stuff from the past year:
I was tagged by @norashelley and @womansfilm for best films and books of the year but i was already putting together some lists and I can't contain it to just 9! Here are my favourite things of the year, in chronological order:
Films:
The Great Gabbo (1929)
Madam Satan (1930)
Min and Bill (1930)
Hell's Angels (1930)
Street Scene (1931)
Million Dollar Legs (1932)
Hoopla (1933)
Alice in Wonderland (1933)
I'm No Angel (1933)
Death Takes a Holiday (1934)
Hips, Hips, Hooray! (1934)
The Old Fashioned Way (1934)
First a Girl (1935)
Ruggles of Red Gap (1935)
Poppy (1936)
It's Love I'm After (1937)
Give Me a Sailor (1938)
Never Say Die (1939)
Hellzapoppin' (1941)
Stage Fright (1950)
Richard III (1955)
The Curse of Frankenstein (1957)
Carry On Cleo (1964)
A Warning to the Curious (1972)
Favourite actors: Sylvia Sidney, W.C. Fields, Bert Wheeler, Marie Dressler, Joan Blondell, Dirk Bogarde, Greta Garbo, Fredric March, Jessie Matthews, Harpo Marx, Martha Raye, John Barrymore, Vivien Leigh & Laurence Olivier
Books:
Dream Story (Arthur Schnitlzer, 1926)
Ex-Wife (Ursula Parrott, 1929)
Deep Water (Patricia Highsmith, 1957)
Groucho and Me (Groucho Marx, 1959)
Listening Walls (Margaret Millar, 1959)
Harpo Speaks! (Harpo Marx, 1961)
The Collector (John Fowles, 1963)
The Sunne in Splendour (Sharon Kay Penman, 1982)
Eleven (Patricia Highsmith, 1994)
I Who Have Never Known Men (Jacqueline Harpman, 1995)
Empress (Shan Sa, 2003)
Junji Ito’s Cat Diary (2009) (a re-read but truly one of the greatest books about cats)
Dark Matter: A Ghost Story (Michelle Paver, 2010)
A Head Full of Ghosts (Paul Tremblay, 2015)
I’ve read 73 books this year. Many many books I did not finish and abandoned (i always get between 50-200 pages in to give it a real chance but I don’t believe in reading things I don’t enjoy), so ive actually consumed quite a bit more than 73 books. I did read a lot of dumb, trashy horror and thriller novels. Sometimes I don’t have the energy to read something intelligent and just need something easy. But that really bumps up my read count.
Favourite Albums:
Every year all I listen to are the same albums on repeat and I have a really hard time getting into new music. But this year I was especially into:
Joanna Newsom - Divers (previously I did not enjoy this album of hers but I have come around to it)
Shirley Collins - Adieu to Old England
Shirley Collins - Sweet England
