La caridad es una de las virtudes teologales, junto con la Fe y la Esperanza. Desde el siglo XVI en adelante, la Caridad se representa comúnmente como una madre que amamanta a sus hijos. Aquí, uno de los niños nos mira y nos llama la atención sobre el ejemplo de su madre. Su pecho todavía está expuesto por alimentar a sus bebés, aunque se han alejado de él.

El paño de terciopelo rojo detrás de la mujer se asemeja al paño de honor que a menudo se cuelga detrás de la Virgen y el Niño en los retablos italianos del siglo XVI para sugerir la apariencia de un trono. La asociación visual de la Caridad con la Virgen y el Niño es frecuente en el arte italiano de la época y habría sido intencional.

La composición se deriva del cuadro más grande del tema de Francesco Salviati en los Uffizi, Florencia, pintado alrededor de 1540, que a su vez se basa en el Doni Tondo de Miguel Ángel, también en los Uffizi. El tocado de estilo antiguo, la elegante pose retorcida y los colores brillantes "disparados" fuertemente resaltados con blanco son típicos del arte manierista florentino.
