A look at some specific books mentioned by Peter over the years...
- How To Play the Five-String Banjo: "Pete Seeger’s book was very, very good. He’s a lively writer as well as a very good musician, a good teacher, good, very enthusiastic kind of all around person. So it was very good to learn from his book. And I recommend the book highly if anybody ever wanted to learn how to play folk-style five-string banjo, his is the book to learn from.” - Peter, Headquarters radio, 1989 (x)
- Naked Lunch: “In Melbourne last night Peter Tork said that Sydney airport Customs officers had seized from his bag the banned book ‘The Naked Lunch,’ by William Burroughs. A Customs officer had taken one look at the book and said, ‘I’ll have that. It’s banned here.’ […] ‘It is a good book,’ Tork said. 'I was just getting interested it. It’s sold out everywhere back home. I didn’t know it was banned here.’” - The Sydney Morning Herald, September 17, 1968 (x)
- Letters to a Young Poet: One question posed to Peter for the Ask Peter Tork column in 2008 was, “Do you think [becoming a writer is] worth a try, or do you suggest I 'keep my day job'?” From Peter's reply: “What writers I know of say is, if you want to be a writer, you’re probably not going to do very well. If you must write, then write! Do you see the difference? Rainer Marie Rilke wrote 'Letters to a Young Poet,' which I recommend on this point. (It’s a small book, and cheap at the bookstore, and free at your library.)”
-Why Do I Say Yes When I Need To Say No?: Escaping The Trap Of Temptation by Michelle McKinney Hammond: “Some years ago there was a movement afoot to separate assertiveness from aggressiveness, which I heartily endorse to this day. 'Why Do I Say Yes When I Mean No,' is, I believe the name of one book that tackles this subject.” - Peter, Ask Peter Tork, 2008
- Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind: “I recommend sitting in Zen meditation. The best book I know for that is Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind, by Shunryu Suzuki. It’s all about watching your own mind rather than obeying it as tho’ it were the infallible voice of the truth.” - Peter, Ask Peter Tork, 2008
- The Sayings of Buddha: “The Sayings of Buddha (a small, inexpensive book you can find in almost any book store) always rests on the night-table beside my bed. I find that ancient wisdom, meditation and contemplation puts my mind in order and brings me great serenity. These things also broaden my scope of understanding.” - Peter, 16, September 1968
- Stranger in a Strange Land: “One of my favorite books now is Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein. It’s about the orphan child of the first Martian explorers. He grows to twenty-one years of age before he’s discovered by the second expedition to Mars which rescues him. He comes back to Earth, having been raised by the Martians — really fascinating!" - Peter, Fave, March 1968
- More Than Human: “Another writer I dig is Theodore Sturgeon, one of the greatest science fiction writers alive today. He visited our set one day and we were all very thrilled. He’s a visionary and a mystic, really one of the giant talents of the day. I hope everybody reads him. He wrote a book called More Than Human and a lot of other novels and short stories.” - Peter, Fave, March 1968
Q: "You read a book a day. Of all the books you have read, which three are your favorites and why?" A: "No, I don’t read a book a day. I sometimes spend weeks on a book. Of all the books I’ve read, my favorites are 'The Book Of [Tao],' 'Stranger In A Strange Land' and oh, I don’t know, a whole mess of other books, because they turn me on—they get to me." - Monkee Spectacular, January 1968
- The Book of Tao: “Peter also reads The Book of the Tao… all about an ancient Chinese nature philosophy with some simple, beautiful and meaningful messages in it. He studies all kinds of different religions, too. Peter has now figured out his own religion, what seems closest to Truth for him. It’s the result of much studying, thinking and sorting out. Peter was also influenced by the Oriental philosophies Zen. ‘Zen Buddhism believes in the theory of sudden enlightenment or sudden awakening. This idea is Japanese. I believe that Truth can just come to you in a sudden flash and you’ll know where it’s all at, if you prepare yourself to receive it. ‘Zen also teaches that you should just go along and live your life as best you can from minute to minute, always living in the present. You’re already there and there’s nothing else. If you can make the most of each day, accomplish and learn all you can now, you’ll get so much more done in your lifetime than if you sit around waiting for tomorrow to come. Because when tomorrow gets here it’s just another today. You end up just waiting and putting things off and nothing ever gets done. So, try to make each minute count!’” - Fave, March 1968
- Upanishads: "[Peter] starts clowning around [on set], but after a bit he settles down and starts reading a book. He sees you looking and explains, ‘This is a book of some of the excerpts of the Upanishads. Actually, these are excerpts from ancient Hindu writings. I guess you could say that in a sense they are like the Bible, only they were written many centuries before the old testament.’ Peter stops speaking for a moment. ‘Am I boring you?’ he asks gently. After you assure him that he is not boring anyone, he continues, ‘Well, the Upanishads are simply but beautifully written. I mean, they are quite easy to understand. You can buy the Mentor pocket edition for about 50 cents —′ Just about that time, Peter becomes aware of 16’s camera focusing on him. He promptly becomes a clown again, laughing and joking and holding his book myopically up to his eyes. You realize that you have just had a glimpse of the real Peter Tork — the sensitive, sincere young man who hides behind the veneer of a silly-funny Monkee. And it makes you feel very warm that for a brief moment you have glimpsed Peter Tork’s secret self." - 16, February 1968
- Autobiography of a Yogi: As Henry Diltz recalled (in Laurel Canyon: A Place In Time), “I remember giving one to Peter on The Monkees set. I did a group shot of them sitting on a couch and he was reading the Yogananda book. I always felt so good about that.”

How do the stories of your Stranger Things OCs vary from canon?
Thank you for this lovely ask @lilac-lemonade ! I'm sure we are all reeling from Stranger Things 4 and looking forward to theorizing what we will expect from the final season! You'll have to let me know what you thought of ST4 when you get the chance!
Stephanie Harrington & Michelle Hargrove in The Babysitter's Club
Tumblr media
I've introduced the basic premise of my OCs in another post and I will attempt to expand from here! Forgive me if it sounds repetitive!
Stephanie Harrington, the younger sister of Steve Harrington, is the first OC to make an appearance in the series The Babysitter's Club. She finds herself heavily involved in the events of Season 1 when she is pulled into the Upside Down alongside Barb Holland during the little get-together at her house. So, not only does Barb go missing but so does Steve's sister, so of course, he's going to be freaking out, knowing that if their parents find out that their precious baby girl is missing, he's going to get a whole lot worse than his car taken from him. So, he's on edge, he's trying to keep Nancy protected because as far as he knows, there's some sicko stealing little kids (Will Byers) and possibly having kidnapped his sister and Barb. So, in the first instalment, instead of Steve being the blase King Steve, he's going to take more of a stance similar to Jason Carver in Season 4, leading the basketball team on search parties in the woods where he more often than not runs into Nancy and Johnathan.
Spoiler alert for the first instalment: will expand upon the Upside Down and Steph, Will and Barb's time in the alternate dimension, Barbara Holland LIVES and Steve will be basically the original Jason Carver (rest assured he still gets his redemption arc).
Michelle Hargrove, the twin sister of Billy Hargrove, is the second OC introduced in the series The Babysitter's Club. After her family makes the hasty move from California to buttfuck Indianna, Shell, Billy and Max make their debut in the small town of Hawkins and quickly establish themselves as quite the tempermental rebels, all in their own little way. Billy and Shell certainly make an impression on the Harrington siblings, who have recently fallen from Hawkin's High social heirarchy after their vague involvement with Will Byer's return from the dead. The Hargrove twins seem to make it their mission to antagonize their counterparts in a desperate attempt to find out what happened to make the royals lose their crowns. While Billy is careful not to draw the suspicions of their father, Shelly doesn't have the same inclination and finds herself dragged into making Molotov cocktails with Stephanie during lunch breaks and following her into the woods with Barbara Holland of all people.
Spoiler alert for the second installment: Billy Hargrove will find out about the Upside Down, sideplot with Steph, Shelly and Barb doing some sleuthing, Barb's aftermath after escaping the Upside Down, Steve Harrington's redemption arc!
In the third installment, the Babysitter's Club diverges heavily from canon between the fall of 1984 and the summer of 1985. It is in the third installment that we see where the series gets its name ( a nod to my all-time favorite film the Breakfast Club) when a weekend detention forces Nancy Wheeler, Steve Harrington, Billy Hargrove, Johnathan Byers, Robin Buckley, Eddie Munson, Barbara Holland, Chrissy Cunningham, Heather Holloway, Patrick McKinney, Stephanie Harrington and Michelle Hargrove all in one room for eight hours where crack shenangins, angst, Upside Down secrets, and romance occurs.
Spoiler alert for the third installment: Robin Buckley, Eddie Munson, Chrissy Cunningham, Heather Holloway and Patrick McKinney kind of find out about the Upside Down before canon, they all some how become part of the Party, fic ships get together, Hawkins lab sideplot is explored more.
The fourth installment takes place in the summer of 1985 and follows the events of Season 3. A lot of the canon events still happen but because more characters know about what's going on, there's a lot more people involved. There is even some expansion in the Upside Down lore such as the mirror people or the Flayed are not actually the people they look like. Rather they are shadow copies will tethers to the real people who are trapped in the Upside Down while their Flayed! versions are out in the real world. The real people are aware of everything their Flayed! versions are doing, but they are trapped. If their Flayed! version dies in the real world, the real people awaken in the Upside Down.

He just told me the compass program is racist....they compiled people here because the mother was really battered......like his mom.....was murdered by his dad for having a boyfriend......
I told him its California so the most extreme reaction from most normative conduct......most people get aggravated if their partner doesn't have friends and tries to cling to them...most people feel kind of harassed if their partner won't go to homo genetics
I told him I looked at schools in California to get a jobby job have an emancipation promise....and if it's graphic design the most militant feminist point right away this is the furthest from the patriarchal order....death wish or how to meet weirdos right away
He told me San Diego is the most expensive city.......I said yea you can't get a job here....without being told to entertain weirdos hey that guy wants to give you his welfare check with yours it will ask you about coffee to do weird sex stuff to him and you will have to fly away...
I think about emigrating because I really cant defend myself about how mean and irresponsible the upper class privilege gets to me......and it's having to go somewhere foreign though if it's Czech advise it's if you go there you only speak if your here you only speak English....
So metropolization is a lot more difficult.....then it can appear beliefs a nation best carries out a company agenda does create borders
Anyway I wanted to know what the feminist annals were about what happened to public school women....so if it's California they just tell you what management is ...
It is all kind of genetic racism.......and a lot of people get murdered by cops if they know that stuff about birth and farming.....if you ever try to work with a cities public school women they kill you its like believing negro works only can learn to read....
So that makes it even harder to give farm fresh food to schools because they are cops property and
Then they get blamed for murders that tried to help them
Anyway I will have to leave San Diego or I would get a severe malignant cancer if I tried to do what I see other women do here....
I am from a really boring town that people protect you from ever touching nogales es things here people just live a good life so it's a lot more violent because they don't incarcerate the way my small boring nothing town will
If i acted the way people do around here I would go to jail for at least a year a woman in McKinney Texas told me the crazy open drug life she lived as common law and never thought a day it was okay to have to go to jail so I think it's that most of these men have no severe repercussion for anything they do....
Like that Roman Catholic guy told me for dealing marijuana that he just had to get tickets if I ever sat around giving people a smoke I would get like a full lamb battery like pulling me around by the neck chained up and microwaved in a cell so I don't know what these people do to think they aren't going to get it ...
Anyway all this business talk these people keep calling me a racist and I am not I have decided a racist....if you must know communal process is more important....
At first I was like be a picker sell your charms and wishes for better fortuity at the road side but now I have decided I am not a racist I'm not going to
Reading comprehension I suspect women that battered do kind of only understand rank obeisance otherwise I don't think they do read too well....they probably do get disorganized symptoms and are encouraged to get aggressive about them before people help them with their learning disability
That and it's difficult to help California women they get very extreme political views like MLK jr. Knows to prosecute about some type of white klan leader
Like Michelle sleeps with all of camp and tells you marriage is the worst thing for women ever.....it's more likely here for community to not comprehend and avoid helping or feel defensive and I think if those men were rude to me till I started getting eating disorder psychology I think they did hit her or I don't know
I would get terrified around californias of eating.....and now it's that I'm just an adult and I don't care...I know enough about life to know that people don't get away with that....
I notice about compass that their obsessed with multiple personality studies....because this place triggers people kind of non stop till I just kind of forgave that white haired lady because I don't think she is a terrorist anymore I think she gets multiple personality disorder
I think she does have a protective personality and she does get really triggered till she Sybil's at people
If there are a lot less males she doesn't get so scary anymore....
A lot of the men move really quickly or expect a lot of fast paced interaction and intense discipline and only the strong can be forgiving
The medical women at compass are neo Nazis....Ilse Koch inspired so I want the men around people have to learn cause and effect or I would have to have dumb bitch beat me up or worse
They tried to get into medeval text manuals about nuns and heresy and practice some pretty mean stuff on people so they have to learn that they are what attracts those men not homeless.....
Its the accupuncturist that got into putting like six needles into her ear so it's the staff that attracts those types of men people like me are boring
Judy tried to blame me for them and it's Judy that acts like a quarter back in space and attracts litigation and harm to herself I weigh my life down so I don't get too quick and dumb of hyper activity
Thats why i trail not dance or I would start getting phrenetic.....
I think about if I did something provocative enough to get hit....and I think I have learned from past battery and have been pretty careful.......so those men tell people their criminal problems cannot do more then dog training if people approach them that way they lash out and the staff keeps doing it to them......
Anyway...........i apparently have started to complete my hours at compass because I have reached the point.....where I get to sympathy car and driver......for doing that loud scary obnoxious stuff.....
Because I get to leave without being angry hopi prophecy
I told him mt soledad would put him in a virtual cage and asked him who the famous white man is they follow...the srimad bhagavatam writes about an other a destroyer that isnt krsna consciousness
They appear to be claiming a hells angel did it I wasn't so sure a white person would do that
Its a little to ambitious for a white person to do and appeared emigrational but they told me to not be surprised....

Shift and Say Yes to Your Next: Day 3 • Devotional
Prayer:
Dear heavenly Father, I confess that I have been paralyzed. I have relied on other sources and listened to other voices that only confused me further. I have placed my confidence in everything but You. I ask for Your forgiveness. Give me Your wisdom and increase my discernment. Help me not to make the mistakes I’ve made in the past. I am ready for my next. Lead me there, in the name of Christ Jesus. Amen.

God knows that a complete woman is a force with which to be reckoned. This is why He pitted the woman, not the man, against the devil. He said that He would place enmity between the woman and the snake, between her offspring and the snake’s offspring (Genesis 3:15). He knew that a determined woman was capable of doing great damage to the kingdom of darkness, especially if she sensed that any of her beloved were being threatened. Women are powerful. And praying women are the most dangerous weapons on the planet in Satan’s eyes. When a God-fearing, Jesus-knowing woman prays, everybody needs to grab their seat belts, because there’s gonna be a whole lotta shakin’ goin’ on until her request is fulfilled. #PowerfulWoman — Michelle McKinney Hammond
