final oscar predictions
95th Academy Awards will happen on March 12th, so here are my unnecessarily detailed predictions for winners in the above-the-line categories, in the order of likelihood, based on the precursors, analysis, hopediction, and pure vibes:
Best Original Screenplay
1. Everything Everywhere All at Once
2. Tar
3. The Banshees of Inisherin
4. The Fabelmans
5. Triangle of Sadness
Early in the season many people thought that EEAAO would be too weird and comedic for the relatively conservative Academy voters but by now it’s clear that it was an unnecessary worry and this movie is pretty much universally loved. It’s going to win at minimum 4 awards of the 11 it’s nominated for and might do a full sweep that is rare with oscars nowadays. I’ve heard many voters also really, really liked Tar so i think it’s the second competitor.
Best Adapted Screenplay
1. All Quiet on the Western Front
2. Women Talking
3. Top Gun: Maverick
4. Glass Onion
5. Living
There is apparently a lot of support for Women Talking among the voters but i’m slightly leaning toward AQotWF based mostly just on hunch and also just because of personal bias because i didn’t like Women Talking myself lol.
Best Director
1. Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (EEAAO)
2. Martin McDonagh (The Banshees of Inisherin)
3. Todd Field (Tar)
4. Steven Spielberg (The Fabelmans)
5. Ruben Ostlund (Triangle of Sadness)
The Daniels won the top prize at the DGA awards which is historically a very strong predictor for the Best Director at Oscars. Everyone else except Ostlund still has a chance though.
Best Actor
1. Austin Butler (Elvis)
2. Brendan Fraser (The Whale)
3. Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin)
4. Bill Nighy (Living)
5. Paul Mescal (Aftersun)
My two personal favorites, Farrell and Mescal, are unlikely to win because their performances were very subtle and internal and the Academy tends to think “best acting” means “most acting”. The precursors and the Academy’s well-known biopic obsession point toward Butler likely being the winner, but Fraser is beloved and has a great comeback narrative which could help him.
Best Actress
1. Michelle Yeoh (EEAAO)
2. Cate Blanchett (Tar)
3. Andrea Riseborough (To Leslie)
4. Michelle Williams (The Fabelmans)
5. Ana de Armas (Blonde)
This is going to be between Blanchett and Yeoh, whose performances are so above the rest of the competition it’s not even funny. I would say it’s genuinely 50/50 coin toss. I’m putting Yeoh first because i personally want her to win, Blanchett gave arguably one of the best performances of her career but she already has two oscars and will probably get more in the future. Yeoh doesn’t have similar opportunities. I’m just praying there won’t be Riseborough upset...
Best Supporting Actor
1. Ke Huy Quan (EEAAO)
2. Barry Keoghan (The Banshees of Inisherin)
3. Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin)
4. Brian Tyree Henry (Causeway)
5. Judd Hirsch (The Fabelmans)
Quan is practically 100% locked. He’s been absolutely steamrolling it on unprecedented level through the whole award season. If anyone else wins i’ll eat my hat.
Best Supporting Actress
1. Jamie Lee Curtis (EEAAO)
2. Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin)
3. Angela Bassett (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever)
4. Hong Chau (The Whale)
5. Stephanie Hsu (EEAAO)
The most difficult category to predict. I could see any one of this women winning - except my and many other’s favorite, Hsu. It’s unfortunately clear she’s an afterthought for the Academy voters, if even that. Whether it’s racism or their bias against young and new actors they don’t seem to think much about her performance. I’m leaning towards JLC over Condon and Bassett. She’s a well-established and beloved actress in a beloved movie, she has the narrative, she won the SAG, she’s been campaigning like crazy, and the voters seem to REALLY love her performance. I know it will be absolute shitstorm if she wins. I actually really liked her performance in EEAAO, i think it had a lot of charm and heart, was transformative without prosthetics, and it was also genuinely supporting performance when lots of supporting nominations are nowadays actually co-leads through category fraud. It’s just that i liked Hsu’s performance even more, and the Academy completely ignoring her in favor of JLCn makes it very blatant that they favor white and well-connected actors.
Best Picture
1. Everything Everywhere All at Once
2. The Banshees of Inisherin
3. Top Gun: Maverick
4. Tar
5. All Quiet on the Western Front
6. Elvis
7. Avatar: The Way of the Water
8. The Fabelmans
9. Women Talking
10. Triangle of Sadness
EEAAO has beat all the odds and become the very likely winner after winning DGA, PGA and SAG. The only others i think have a legit chance are Banshees, Top Gun and Tar. The Fabelmans shows up high in many lists but to me it seems clear it doesn’t have much passion. Elvis and Avatar are crowdpleasers but may not appeal to more ‘highbrow’ voters. AQotWF did well at BAFTAs but american voters are not as enthusiastic. EEAAO it is.

Possible Cast Members for “Knives Out 3”?
Tumblr media
Rian Johnson has done it again with Glass Onion, an excellent follow-up to the raucously enjoyable Knives Out. The consistency in the writing and the way both films award repeat viewings make them great comfort watches, and Daniel Craig seems to be having a wonderful time playing the over-the-top Southern drawling, eagle eyed dandy Benoit Blanc.
The success of the series so far has been not just the clever writing, but the casting, as each film utilises an ensemble of tremendous character actors who enjoy being outlandish and ridiculous. Unsurprisingly, Twitter quickly began asking who fans would love to see in the cast, and it prompted me to consider my own ideas. It won’t shock many to hear I quickly thought of many, but below are some of my ideas. The good thing is that Benoit Blanc has the potential to be the Columbo of feature films, appearing every few years in an ongoing franchise, so even if these don’t all appear in the third movie, there could always be the next one...
Tumblr media
Brendan Fraser is currently in the midst of a career renaissance due to his performance in The Whale, where he has become a front runner for Best Actor prizes in his heartbreaking portrayal. But this kind hearted, beloved man first came to prominence with his self-deprecating manner in fan favourite cult classics such as George of the Jungle and one I particularly love, The Mummy. He’s shown his ability to balance comedy with pathos, so he’d be perfectly suited in this world.
Tumblr media
Jon Hamm is man who looks like he is chiselled out of perfection, and yet surprised many with his comedic timing in 30 Rock and the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Hamm could work perfectly as the murder victim in a Benoit Blanc movie, his magnetism allowing him to be depicted positively before flashbacks reveal a darker edge, akin to his more dramatic roles.
Tumblr media
Stephanie Hsu was the surprise break out from Everything Everywhere All At Once, demonstrating surprising pathos in her support role and impressively holding her own against Michelle Yeoh. A trope in the previous two movies of the series has been Blanc’s double act with a young female, firstly the Cuban-Spanish Ana De Armas, and then the non-binary African-American Janelle Monae, so it wouldn’t be surprising if they continue that method. Hsu could have a brilliant double act with Craig, so I think she’d be fantastic.
Tumblr media
Hugh Jackman is handsome, can sing, is funny, an amazing dramatic actor, and reputedly one of the nicest human beings in Hollywood. Renowned for his classic portrayals of Wolverine, one of the few action heroes to challenge James Bond, I could see him portraying one of Benoit’s best friends, inviting both Blanc and Hugh Grant’s Phillip to a Broadway event (any excuse to see Jackman, Grant and Craig singing Broadway together).
Tumblr media
Daniel Kaluuya is mostly known for his partnership with Jordan Peele, specifically in the excellent horror films Get Out and Nope, as well as his appearances in Steve McQueen’s Widows and his award winning performance in Judas and the Black Messiah. However, an often underrated element is his dry, deadpan line reading, epitomised by his performance in Nope especially. I could see Kaluuya in a similar role to LaKeith Stanfield from Knives Out as an exasperated detective working alongside Benoit Blanc.
Tumblr media
Lupita Nyong’o may be better known for her dramatic roles in 12 Years A Slave, Jordan Peele’s Us, and even her role as Nakia in the Black Panther series, but it’s actually her role in the horror comedy Little Monsters that makes me think she would suit the series. Portraying a kindergarten teacher trying to protect her class from a zombie outbreak, her mix of sincere positivity and deadpan humour could make her a Toni Collette / Kathryn Hahn esque figure.
Tumblr media
Sandra Oh finally got the lead role she deserved in her series Killing Eve, her role as Eve Polastri allowing her to demonstrate her tremendous range in comedy and drama. She mainly now features in voiceover roles, such as Turning Red or Invincible, but it would be great to see her bring her frazzled energy to a Benoit Blanc mystery.
Tumblr media
Pedro Pascal is currently the lead in two of the biggest possible television shows, firstly playing the eponymous character in Disney’s The Mandalorian, and recently taking on the lead role of Joel in HBO’s The Last Of Us. Although these two roles means Pedro is likely going to be fully booked for the majority of his time, a role in a Benoit Blanc ensemble seems perfectly suited for him.
Tumblr media
Florence Pugh is probably the least likely, considering she’s now a critical and commercial darling with upcoming roles in Dune: Part Two and ongoing performance as Yelena Belova in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, her comedic timing demonstrated in Fighting With My Family and as Yelena is an underrated element of her repertoire that deserves more attention. She would seemingly suit a similar role to Ana De Armas and Janelle Monae, but I’d love to see that expectation get turned on its head and reveal her to be more similar to Kate Hudson in Glass Onion, the reversal of “hidden depths”.
Those are just some that come to mind, but I’d love to hear others thoughts on who they would have join the Benoit Blanc Cinematic Universe?

The Biggest Moments, Wins, and Comebacks of the 2023 Oscars Ceremony
by Peyton C.

The Academy Awards ceremony is a pivotal moment in both cinema and popular culture. Not only does it showcase the hard work and dedication that goes into filmmaking, but it honors those who are considered the best at what they do. From awards ranging from Best Animated Feature Film to Best Picture, the Oscars honor all who achieve greatness in their work. This year’s ceremony was no different, with many talented people nominated for their devotion to the arts. The 2023 Oscars ceremony featured many iconic moments, historic wins, and massive comebacks.
To start the ceremony, the Academy of Motion Pictures played a montage full of nominated films like “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” & “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” to name a few. After that, the host, comedian Jimmy Kimmel, entered the stage via parachute to parody the nominated movie “Top Gun: Maverick.” During Kimmel’s introduction monologue, he poked fun at some of the ceremony’s attendees. He joked about the vast number of Irish nominees by saying, “It was some year for diversity and inclusion. We have nominees from every corner of Dublin.” But he also referenced the incident between Will Smith and Chris Rock that occurred on-stage at last year’s show. He said, “We have strict policies in place. If anyone in this theater commits an act of violence at any point in the show, you will be awarded the Oscar for Best Actor and permitted to give a 19-minute-long speech.”
But besides Kimmel’s hilarious jokes, there were other iconic moments throughout the show, such as the incredible performances from singers nominated for the Best Original Song category. For her performance of “Hold My Hand” from “Top Gun: Maverick,” Lady Gaga changed out of her stunning black Versace dress into regular clothes and took off all of her makeup to create a vulnerable performance. Gaga spoke of what the song means to her, “It’s deeply personal for me, and I think that we all need each other. We need a lot of love to walk through this life. And we all need a hero sometimes.” Other performers included Rihanna for “Lift Me Up” (“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”), David Byrne and Stephanie Hsu for “This Is A Life” (“Everything Everywhere All At Once”), Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava for “Naatu Naatu” (“RRR”), and Sofia Carson and Diane Warren for “Applause” (“Tell It Like a Woman”).
This year’s awards ceremony was also full of historic wins for some nominees. Michelle Yeoh became the first Asian woman to win the Best Actress category for her role in the hit movie, “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” During her acceptance speech, Yeoh said, “For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibilities.” The film “RRR” also received a historic win for the first song in an Indian movie to earn the Best Original Song award for “Naatu Naatu” by M.M. Keeravani and Chandrabose. Marvel’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” also earned a historic win for its costume department. Ruth E. Carter, the costume designer for the film, became the first Black woman to ever win two Oscars. Carter previously won for her amazing work in the first “Black Panther” movie back in 2018. Carter thanked the Academy in her speech by saying, “Thank you to the Academy for recognizing the superhero that is a Black woman.”
But many have called the 2023 Oscars a year for comebacks, especially for two beloved actors. Brendan Fraser and Ke Huy Quan have resurfaced in Hollywood after staying away from the mainstream media for years. Fraser recently starred in “The Whale,” which earned him a nomination for Best Actor. During the ceremony, Fraser won the award for his respective category and received a standing ovation from the audience. Meanwhile, Quan starred alongside Michelle Yeoh in the critically acclaimed movie, “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” Quan’s performance earned him the nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Quan also won the award in his respective category, giving an emotional acceptance speech on stage. Quan said, “My journey started on a boat. I spent a year in a refugee camp, and somehow, I ended up here on Hollywood’s biggest stage.” Later in the night, Quan was able to reconnect with his former “Indiana Jones” co-star Harrison Ford, in an emotional reunion as he presented the award for Best Picture to Quan’s movie. After both of their wins, many look forward to the continued appearance of Fraser and Quan in other big projects.
As one of the longest traditions in Hollywood, the Oscars are a time when the movie industry and its contributors can come together and celebrate cinema. Whether you win or not, the Oscars acknowledge those who are some of the most creative and talented people. They are also a time when we as an audience can laugh, cry, and rejoice for our favorite actors and creative visionaries. The Oscars are also a time diversity in cinema can be celebrated. Films like “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” “RRR,” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” are just some of the diverse and extraordinary films from 2022. After the 95th Oscars ceremony, many look forward to seeing what films will gain recognition and become a part of this prestigious institution next year.

everything everywhere all at once is about intergenerational trauma. about depression and passive suicidality and the gravitational appeal of nothingness. about aging, getting older in your twenties and getting older in your fifties. about the specific hurt mothers can cause their daughters and daughters their mothers. about the harsh reality of the immigrant experience and the american dream. but it’s mostly about kindness and family and it’s about choosing to sit at home talking about taxes with someone who loves you, and it’s about telling your daughter that you’d choose her over the entire universe, and it’s about how even in the universes where life didn’t form, love can still exist. and it’s really all of that at once.
