When people say that Hobie would be black4black there's some people who get upset.

They think Hobie only dating black women or people is wrong. And racist. They think it should be called out and shunned.

It's funny how those people never had a problem before.

It's funny how those people don't seem to care that Peter Parker has only ever dated white women.

It's funny how those people don't care that Peter Parker has existed for SIXTY YEARS and he still has no canon ORIGINAL BLACK love interests.

They don't care that the only POC he's been attracted to are Silk - which was driven by biological pheromones and not actual love. And Michelle Jones - a black variant of his originally white love interest.

And EVEN THEN they casted her as a mixed race black woman. Zendaya said it herself - she recognizes she's "Hollywood's definition of an 'acceptable' black woman."

Hobie Brown dating black girls in fandom is wrong. It would be shunned. We should be ashamed, they say.

Peter Parker dating white girls in canon is okay. It's fine. Don't think about it, they say.

To them Peter Parker being attracted solely to white women is natural. They don't even think about it.

They don't give a fuck about diversity or representation. They care about seeing their favorite characters fuck white women regardless of who it is, how it happens, or how much of the character they have to erase.

If a character only dates white women - like Tony Stark in the MCU - they're fine with it.

Notice how Tony almost never takes home a black woman? And how all his one night stands are slim white women with blonde hair? Bet you didn't. Cause it's 'natural' to them.

Peter Parker has been basically romantically White4White since 1962. Y'all do not care.

Some rando on Tumblr thinks Hobie is Black4Black - and suddenly you're fixing your fingers to type a message - on anon of course.

I wonder why y'all never write to Marvel, demanding they show Peter with ALL RACES.

The same way y'all write posts demanding Hobie being shown with ALL RACES.

The next time someone tells me 'Hobie wouldn't discriminate, he loves all races!!'

I'll say 'So does Peter. Peter wouldn't discriminate. Yet all his love interests are white. Why is that? Do you care?'

The answer is very clearly no.

When Peter gets a canon ORIGINAL black love interest, maybe even we can talk.

Until then, don't tell me shit about diversity.

5. First headcanon that pops into mind:

Besides sketchbooks, he also owns an expensive drawing tablet that Bruce got him for one of his birthdays. He makes good use of it, but he still prefers traditional more though since that's what he grew up with, so it's not something he stopped doing after getting an art tablet. He just loves the good feeling of getting out all his pencils, brushes, paints, and having fun expressing himself with them right there on his canvas or in his books. Another reason he perfers it more is because he can actually travel with a sketchbook too and just draw wherever he wants and especially because he also hates it whenever a digital drawing he's working on just suddenly deletes itself because of some error while he was in the middle of drawing it, which upsets him VERY much all the time. Most times when that happens, he just really needs a moment for himself to calm down, plus, process and mourn his erased piece that never got to be saved and truly finished.

Okay, so remember that one Wayne family adventures chapter where Damian is struggling so much to socialize in school and it's all just so awkward for him? Well, that's me too, because I relate too hard to that lol (there's also the fact that we both love art and draw all the time too)

I usually just see him as straight, but I'm not against any other kind of sexuality for him at all though

Hmmm, him and MJ are sweet (the Rami version of it is definitely a mess though), but I also really like Peter x Michelle from the mcu and Peter x Gwen from the Amazing Spider-Man movies too hehehe

Peter and Ned. I just love how silly and fun they are with eachother lol

Black cat. She's a villain who loves living the thief life, plus, I just don't believe she's right for Peter since she's more in love with his Spider-man identity and always sees things like a game, which just doesn't work for a real relationship

Hello From the Other Side

This is my “behind the scenes” series where I indulge myself horribly by annotating my fics. Link to the fic itself above. Thoughts below the cut.

Yet another reactionary Endgame fic. You'd think as much as that movie bothered me that I would've chucked it all for a true canon-is-dead fix-it, but no. I don't remember which nugget in this fic sparked its existence. My guess is it was just hearing the character voices in my head. Say what you will about MCU's Tony and Peter, but their voices are distinct and very easy to write.

“This is not the voicemail you are looking for. Nah, I’m just kiddin’, this is Peter’s phone. I’m off saving the galaxy with a princess and a scruffy-looking nerfherder, but leave a message after the beep and I’ll get back soon as I can.” [BEEP] ——— [SILENCE] ——— [SILENCE] ——— [SILENCE] ——— “Hey, uh, Peter, it’s me… God, this is stupid. This is so stupid. I can’t—“ ——— “Look. I don’t want to do this, but Pepper’s threatening to keep me in the hospital until I talk to someone. And I can’t. I just can’t. Not about this. Not to anyone. Not to you, either, if this were real, but this… you’re not…” [SILENCE]

Figuring out how to write out transcripts of voicemails was a painnnnnnn. I'm still not sure how clear it is for anyone not in my head, but I went with bold text for the machine message (and the Star Wars joke seemed like the obvious choice!), and the <hr> breaks marked off each call (so the first three silences, for example, are Tony calling and then hanging up without saying anything.) I also wanted to be able to denote long pauses within a call, too, so having the bracketed SILENCE markers were important.

I could call someone in, but they don’t know what to say. I don’t know what to say. And I close my eyes and I just… I see stars. So here’s the deal. You’re asleep. You’re asleep, and I’m being that asshole Tony Stark not checking the time and getting your voicemail. That’s all this is, got it? I’m gonna sit here and ramble into this phone like a lunatic because it’s late and I’m sleep deprived, and tomorrow you’ll listen and give me a hard time about it.

Figuring out why Tony was doing what he was doing was a challenge, too, because it had to make sense, it had to be consistent with his character, he had to know why, AND he had to be willing to at least say some of it out loud. That's how dialogue works, with all those internal filters and lenses, and that's why writing characters who don't just say whatever they want is such a pain.

She’s gone. She’s gone, Pete, and I’m so, I’m so sorry. She was on shift at the hospital and the security feed caught everything. I tried to find… I tried to find anyone. Anyone. Pepper helped. My strength’s not… it’s still not up to par, you know. We looked. I swear we did. Your, uh, your buddy. Your guy in the chair, Ned. He’s gone, too. I found his mom and his little sister. Made sure they were taken care of. Your friend Michelle, too. That bastard of a grape wiped out your whole decathalon team. The guy in the corner store, Mr. Delmar, he’s around, but his family’s gone.

Per my note on the fic itself, I wrote the majority of this before Far From Home. And I'm really hecking chuffed it's canon compliant.

There was another ceremony today. I know I said I wasn’t going to go to another one, and I didn’t, but it was on TV.

Figuring out the timing and cadence of the calls was tricky, too. The conceit I settled on was this fic is just a small collection of the voicemails made, not all of them. Tony would have called way, way more over the years, about big things and small things and nothing at all, just for comfort, and no way was I writing all of that. This was just for slice of life stuff, which also made for a neat trick where I could reference a thing and not have to explain it too much.

The TV we don’t have anymore, by the way. I blasted it halfway through the first speech. Scared Happy half to death. He came tuck-and-rolling into my room but got his shoe caught on a power cord.

I binged so so so many IronDad & SpiderSon fics back in 2019, holy smokes. Happy goofs was such a staple of the genre.

Oh, and get this, lots of lovely famines popping up, because Mr. I’m-Gonna-Murder-Scarcity snapped half the world’s food supply.

I remain deeply, deeply bitter over how stupid "the snap" was.

‘m drunk. V’r v’r drunk. FRIDAY-was-yellin’ drunk. Shut her off. World’s ended. [PHHHHBT] [BSHHHH] I d’serve a drink. Any drinks. ‘mean, many drinks. All drinks for Tony. ‘Cause I’ll regret this later but, but I know it. I know it. ‘Cause I’m old. I’m gonna live and live and live.

I have no idea if this is an accurate representation of a drunken grieving voicemail. I do not drink, so any attempt made in fiction that touches on alcohol is me internally letting out a high-pitched leak of a noise and taking a stab in the dark.

You know I listened to ‘em? Ev… ev’ry one. I know you thought I didn’t. I did. I-I knew about you quitting band. The cat you saved from the tree that scratched your arm. The drunk guy you helped home. The d’ble rainbow you spotted over the bridge. Shit, Pete. Is that what this is? Is this my punishment for not picking up?

It is vital to me that Tony Stark did in fact always listen to Peter's messages. I claim the fanon. But also, gotta stab readers in the emotions, kachow.

She, uh. She’s. She’s pregnant, kid. Told me tonight. She said she’d been feeling… And then FRIDAY confirmed it for her with a scan. She’s seven weeks. She’s preh… preg… oh. I, uh.

Of course the first person he tells is a dead boy. He would want him to know.

I can’t do this, Pete. I can’t be a dad. I can’t do it. How do you bring a kid into a world like this, huh? How can you do that to this tiny, defenseless person?

I have to say, reading this a month away from the four-year pandemicaversary? Knowing this was written with no foreknowledge of how wild 2020 and after was going to be? Eerie.

I tried to call and it wouldn’t come up. I got, I got a damn out of service message. No voicemail. No saving the galaxy. You were gone. It was like losing you all over again. Turns out the phone company finally pulled itself together and started closing accounts that had defaulted on payments. With you and your aunt gone, there was no one around to… But don’t worry. I got your phone taken care of. You’re paid off for the next eighty years, give or take. I’m not letting you go anywhere, not ever again.”

At least one of us had to pay attention to real-world logistics, since the Russo Brothers don't seem inclined to—

Turns out I’m really into shiplap. You probably don’t know what that is. Heck, I wouldn’t have known what that is, but Pepper’s got me hooked on these design shows now. For research, you know. You thought I was a genius before, you should hear me now. Recessed lighting, birdsmouth joints, cornices, banquettes, coffered vs tray ceilings, bouclé accents, I know it all. Pepper and I both have very strong feelings about when wainscoting is appropriate.

My mom was also super into shiplap at the time, but I had to google the rest of it. (Funnily enough, I did get into design shows in the pandemic. Like I said, eerie.)

I’m lucky, Pete. I know. I know how mad I’ve gotten when people have said that. I haven’t felt lucky. I don’t think anyone’s felt lucky in the last year. And I know I didn’t lose Pepper, thank God. Rhodey and Happy were still here when I got back. I’m still a billionaire, still a genius, still pretty damn fine if I do say so myself. I didn’t starve to death in space. But god, did I not feel lucky. After all we lost… after what I lost… But I get it now. I do. Because I’m sitting here, holding this new life, and I feel like the luckiest guy in the world. Only thing that’s missing is you.

Figuring out the beats of Tony's path to healing was important, too.

Not to crap on someone else’s happiness, but you know which group made it through intact? The Black-Eyed Peas. What kind of cosmic joke is that?

If they're your thing, good for you, but for me, pure unadulterated loathing. I was fortunate enough to study abroad in 2010 and they followed me everywhere I went. Literally multiple countries across Europe, "I've got a feeling, woooooohoooooo" the whole way. The absolute worst.

There’s no saying you would’ve got to MIT, though. You would’ve gotten in, of course. But a brain like yours? You’d get in anywhere—MIT, Harvard, UC Berkeley, even the Imperial College or Nanyang.

I had to hit a lot of the fic classics and Peter's college choice is one of them. I went to a public university, though, and not for anything STEM-related, so this list was a bunch of googling on my part. Is it accurate? No idea.

They’re rebooting Star Wars. They’re friggin’ rebooting Star Wars. Because everything’s gotta be a cash grab now. Bad enough that they trashed the saga with that awful ending. Now they want to reboot it? A new hope for a new world is the unofficial slogan. Garbage. You watch, they’ll probably shoehorn in those stupid dice from the beginning now and still say Greedo shot first. Maybe Jabba will secretly be Chewbacca’s dad this whole time.

I HAVE SO MUCH STAR WARS RAGE AND YOU KNOW THIS IS EXACTLY THE KIND OF GARBAGE THEY WOULD PULL!!!!

The world should know who you are. They should remember what you did for them. But you never wanted people to know. That’s what I keep coming back to. You chose friendly neighborhood Spider-Man over the Avengers, being a high school kid over famous. Maybe someday people will know. A dramatic deathbed confession by yours truly. But for now, it’ll just be me.

The movies never explained why Peter was never honored, so I took matters into my own hands.

“Bye, Peter, bye! Bye! I love you!”

Morgan knowing exactly who Peter was even without meeting him was also vital.

Not Scott, though. I swear that man’s immortal. Distill him down and bottle him up, there’s your fountain of youth right there.

Yes, this was a Paul Rudd joke.

I went into this knowing exactly how I wanted to end it, down to Tony's outgoing message. So satisfying.

Hello everyone! Before proceeding I would like to explain the list I made, first of all, these are based on the fics I've been reading since April because before that I didn't make monthly fic recs and didn't have a proper tag for the fics I read. In the end, just scrolling endlessly through my posts to find the fics I read before would take too long so I decided to just start with April 💜 this are the fics that I've thought about constantly during the boring days.

This is incredibly soft with the perfect amount of feels. It's rare that I read anything without smut (what can I say, I'm thirsty always) but this one was amazing and just screams peter parker to me.

3. Sweet Girl of Mine by @inklore (tasm!peter)

this was one of the first things I read of Laura's and fell in love immediately. Peter is a menace in this one and if you want that man to praise you this fic is the way to go.

Peter, Alone by @light-yaers (peter parker x michelle)

I was deep into the mcu!peter x Michelle hole and while scouring tumble for fics for them this one popped up, still to this day I think about this. The angst, the hurt, it's all in here and I love it.

This is one of those fics I think about again and again, I couldn't shake this one off after reading it for a while. I was just in love. The way you write the toxicity laced with love is stunning, this is one of my all-time favorites. Everything about this one is so raw and enticing.

2. Venus, Planet of Love by @peterthepark (steven grant)

The voice of Steven is stunning here. If you love friends to lovers I'm here to say that this is the one. It has all the feels and whenever I read it I just feel nice and fuzzy (and also horny because damn the smut is stunning)

3. Spirals and Skin by @clints-lucky-arrow (steven grant)

As someone with tattoos, I was mesmerized by this. I still think about how desperate Steven was in the kitchen and how he painted readers tattoos. Just amazing, I love it so much.

4. Mirror's Edge by @astroboots (marc , steven)

I will never, ever, forget this one. Especially the ending with steven being so comforting and coming out, and the writing stunning. The emotions I felt while reading this was so real.

5. Talking Shadows by @foli-vora (khonshu)

Yes, Khonshu. The writing is beautiful, the feeling, and the way Khonshu is constantly talking in the background. I couldn't forget this one even if I tried.

I'm pretty sure anyone who knows me knows how much I adore this series. It's my comfort, my safe space and Kelli's writing is to die for. The emotions this fic has is brilliant and I'll never forget it.

2. Stay Close by @ezrasbirdie (pero trovar)

This series has everything; action, spice, fluff, hurt/comfort. It's everything wrapped in an absolutely beautifully written package. I love it, one of the rare fics that I truly relate to the reader. I can never have too much of it.

3. Sex Worker!frankie morales au by @prolix-yuy (frankie morales)

This one feels like a nice warm bowl of soup on a cold day. It has all the feels, amazing story-building and the smut is delicious. I cannot recommend this one enough. One of my favorite frankie's.

4. Palomino by @fuckyeahdindjarin (jack daniels)

Another one of my comfort fics, cowboy jack is truly something else and a threat of giving me a heart attack. This fic is charming, the mutual pining is everything and I have no idea what I would do without it.

5. Mutual by @the-scandalorian (din djarin)

This is just one of those stories that makes me feel so much. I love Din in this, I love their relationship and how they come together. The drabble for the series absolutely wrecked my heart. It's hot, it's emotional and reader is one I can relate to. Just perfect.

This one sends chills down my spine, the raw fear and emotion this fic has are outstanding and memorable. I still have the scene with the radio locked in my head, giving me a good little fear when nighttime rolls around. (and the adorable chip is a huge bonus)

2. Like a Moth To the Flame by @the-scandalorian (din djarin)

Monster Din is one of the best creations and I adore him. The word you built with this one is so vivid and as I said before whenever it rains I think about them, monster!din going on a hunt lives rent-free in my mind, and the scene where reader is taking a dip in the lake.

3. Postcards by @write-and-buried (joel miller)

Reading this gave me goosebumps, everything that happens in it feels so real and I love how tense everything feels from chapter one. One of the joel fics that inspire me the most.

4. Reflective by @prolix-yuy (max phillips)

I screamed about this to you multiple times but honestly, this two-parter lives rent-free in my head. Especially the scene after reader leaves, absolutely horrifying and sexy, best of both worlds.

Ah yes, homecoming. My second biggest comfort fic. It seriously helped me through a lot and everything about it I love. One of my favorite portrayals of Santiago, I relate to him a ridiculous amount and this series will forever live in my heart.

2. Stranger At My Gate by @leslie-lyman (pero tovar)

This is the perfect holiday/winter read. I love this one a not-so-normal amount, it gives me all the feels, laughter, and all the good warm fuzzy feelings. I love the story-telling, the magic, and your pero I adore.

3. Learning curves by @ezrasbirdie (frankie morales)

I read this when I wasn't in such a good place mentally and I swear that it healed me. The emotion, the fluff, the angst, all of it combined in this masterpiece of a series. I feel seen with this one and will never forget the frankie x benny x reader threesome. Live rent free in my head always.

4. Like a River by @radiowallet (marcus moreno, frankie morales)

I remember reading this like it was yesterday. The way their relationship blooms and forms despite the awkward moments is stunning and the way you thread everything together is outstanding. Again, like with all your works, I am in awe of your talent of making the reader able to literally see what you're describing.

Calculated Risks by @pedrito-friskito (dieter bravo)

This fic is the perfect friends-to-lovers story to me, I love the fact that it grew into something more after a one shot and the way you have written their relationship growing and evolving is heartwarming. One of my favorite Dieter's.

The first Zach fics I read and it was amazing. I love how they spontaneously meet and reading how Zach slowly regains his confidence thanks to reader's kindness. Zach's shower I will never forget.

The first fic I read of yours and it was love at first sight. The ending is still with me and the storytelling is something I take inspiration from when writing my own work. Loved the details, the enemies to lovers, the angst, the smut-- One of my faves for sure.

2. Between the Raindrops by @jazzelsaur (frankie morales)

The emotions this one makes me go through are such an amazing ride. The characterization, the way you tie everything together is true craftsmanship and I am here for it. This series brought me near to tears despite the fact that I still haven't finished it yet (which is a crime) It's one of the most amazing things I read and Ellie (and you ofc) really inspired me to write my own ofc's.

3. you're somebody else @foli-vora (marcus pike )

Thinking about the betrayal in this one still makes my chest ache not gonna lie. Absolutely brutal but yet also intriguing, love the way you've written Marcus here, it's one of those stories that makes your mind crawl back to it

4. Red Flags Masterlist by @astroboots & @thirstworldproblemss (moonknight)

This one is absolutely one of my favorite Moonknight fics, the characterization is superb, the feeling and emotion this one has got me every time. It made me laugh multiple times and also made me worry about what might happen. Stunning writing and perfect in every way

5. One Step at a Time by @foli-vora (pero tovar)

This fic has lived in my mind rent free ever since I read it. I adore your Pero here and how they slowly learn to trust one another. This one isn't completed yet but I just cant wait to read more.

Some thoughts on “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” (late on this, but only because I was busy with finals):

1) I know that people were mad that Reed Richards, the so-called “smartest man in the universe” acted like an idiot in the movie. In the movie’s defense, 838!Reed wasn’t aware of how dangerous MCU!Wanda was. If he only knew about his universe’s Wanda, then he just assumed she was this soccer mom with basic magic abilities. Plus, even though Strange warned him about MCU!Wanda, Reed didn’t have a reason to trust Strange, especially since his own Strange almost wiped out Earth-838.

As a side note, Reed acting like an idiot while being called the “smartest man in the universe” feels on-brand for his character. See: Reed Richards is Useless trope.

2) I’ve already written about this, but I love how this movie was basically Evil Dead 4 / Army of Darkness 2. Sam Raimi really just used the MCU in order to create another Evil Dead movie.

3) If I had to make a criticism, it’d be the shift from Wanda being a hero to a villain. First off, I’m absolutely in favor of this heel turn. In fact, one of my main criticisms of “WandaVision” is that it tried to justify what Wanda was doing, when the show was really doing a great job at setting up Wanda as the next potential threat (she imprisoned a whole town to live out her fantasies, for fucks sake). If you take away Monica Rambeau trying to repair Wanda’s image, “WandaVision” comes off more as a villain origin story.

But I do feel there should’ve been a clearer descent into madness. It didn’t even have to be a full rewrite, there could’ve easily been one extra montage showing Wanda using the Darkhold and then slowly being corrupted by the book. And right after the montage, you cut to Strange meeting Wanda in the garden. Sure, the “surprise” reveal is lost, but the villain arc has better foundation in the story.

4) My favorite scene has to be the Sinister Strange universe. One of my favorite tropes is when characters visit an alternate universe that’s been completely fucked for reasons unknown. I just love how creepy that whole universe was, like it’s this forbidden space that no one should visit.

5) I do like how the movie approached Doctor Strange’s character. Going off of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, one of the things that he had Peter Parker wonder was if he was truly happy with his life. It seems like Raimi brought that same mindset when it came to Doctor Strange, especially with how Strange kept being shown how he could’ve messed up when it came to his actions.

Defender Strange represented how he was willing to sacrifice people for the greater good (America Chavez even came across as another Peter Parker). 838 Strange represented how his ego could lead to devastating consequences. Sinister Strange showed that he could be corrupted in his pursuit of happiness aka Christine Palmer (which we’ve already seen with Supreme Strange).

Not to make the obvious comparison, but it did remind me of “Everything, Everywhere, All At Once”, where Michelle Yeoh was being shown how amazing her life could’ve been if she had made different decisions. The difference here is that MCU Strange is being shown how terrible his life could’ve been/how awful he could’ve become had he strayed off the righteous path. Which makes sense with Doctor Strange as a character since his character is all about learning through his mistakes and suffering.

6) This is just a dumb observation. Was Bruce Campbell’s character being a pizza vendor a reference to “Drag Me to Hell”? I know the uncontrollable hand gag was an Evil Dead reference, but Pizza Poppa made me think of “CHEESE PIZZA, CHEESE PIZZA” from “Drag Me to Hell”.

Phase 4 Is Almost Over And Contrary To My Initial Line Of Thought I Did End Up Watching All Of Them Somehow So Now You Get To Hear About It

I'll be talking about both the movies AND the series in order of release under the cut, the TL;DR for me is,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I don't know why everyone cares so much about if it was Good or Bad.

That might seem dumb to say on a Rating Post but I'll get to it.

WandaVision (1/15/2021)-- 9/10

I think the MCU has definitely had it's bobbles handling Wanda (even in this show) but this one actually really hit home for me. The fall/winter leading up to this show, I was actually in a pretty deeply depressive episode-- hardly able to leave my bed outside of class or speak to anyone around me in person, so even though I wasn't exactly feeling grief like Wanda was, I found her emotional arc of wanting to be In Control And Happy to at least be relatable. I do think the Agatha twist could have been handled better as far as writing goes, but I think that's mostly a flaw of the MCU formula (which you'll hear a lot in this post). I also don't think the Evan Peters of it all was anything to get that mad about, and people who were and are STILL mad about it can Submit Their Complaints To My Ask Box.

Also the final Scarlet Witch costume slapped I loved it.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier (3/19/2021)-- 7.75/10

I can't really speak to the way everything in this show was handled, given that I am white as snow, but overall, there was a lot I really liked about this one. The writing and performance for Isaiah Bradley as acted by Carl Lumbly was so intense and probably my favorite part of the show overall. My main gripe is really the handling of the Flag Smashers and the need to have Walker saving people in the final fight. I think Walker was well past the point of getting the audience on his side For One Last Go by then, and the Flag Smashers were just...so, so horribly whacked out of line with their prior depiction by the end. It just wasn't congruent.

Speaking of incongruent....

Loki Season 1 (6/9/2021)-- 6.5/10

I really wanted to enjoy Loki. Like I really did. But sitting on it for a year and a half and rewatching it, I think it was just TOO inconsistent episode to episode. There are individual MOMENTS and individual EPISODES even that I think are very good on the whole, but I think it's too obvious when different writers are taking on different characters (Mobius especially). It was a pleasant surprise to see Jonathan Majors, though, and I don't think I hated the finale as much as some other people did. I just think WandaVision did a good job deconstructing Wanda, and TFATWS did a good job deconstructing Sam's relationship to the Shield, but Loki just didn't really have a grasp on Loki as a character for me.

Black Widow (7/9/2021)-- 7/10

This movie should have been in Phase 3. Also stan Florence Pugh. That's about it.

Also if you hate what they did with Taskmaster, that's fine but it's not that deep.

What If...? (8/11/2021)-- 4.5/5

What If had some really good episodes, like Star-Lord T'Challa & Stark Saved By Kilmonger. But it also had The Zombies Episode and Captain Carter and Whatever The Fuck That Finale Was. It's more inconsistency and connecting it for the sake of connecting it and not really stopping to PLAY in the worlds they created, which was a shame, and then when they did it was,,,,,,,,,,REAL hit or miss. Mostly miss.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (9/3/2021)-- 8/10

Delicious finally some good fucking food. First, kissing Simu Liu on the mouth because he's SUCH a great leading man. Second, it felt JUST disconnected enough from the MCU while still having the canon references to feel fresh. It was still very much In-Tone with the MCU as far as humor went, but the actors really carried this to something special-- Simu, Michelle Yeoh, TONY LEUNG????? icon. Even places where the narrative was weaker were WELL compensated by the actors, enough to make me eager to see the next installment.

Eternals (11/5/2021)-- 7/10

Do I think the cast was too large, in the end? Yes. But Eternals was still so...austere in a way the MCU normally is not. It was a very different kind of movie, formulaically. Sure, Big Gray Monster, but it was very much not front and center. Centering it on Sersi and taking advantage of Gemma Chan's Pure Power was great, and I loved how the dynamics between the characters drove the story.

Also, stan Phastos.

Hawkeye (11/24/2021)-- 6/10

I would have probably enjoyed it more if Clint's character buildup wasn't so little and far apart in other MCU movies. It felt like I was SUPPOSED to be relating to this old friend's struggle with grief, but it just Did Not Hit.

I was mostly here for Vera Farmiga. Real Girlies Know.

Spider-Man: No Way Home (12/17/2021)-- 5/10

.......................No Way Home wasn't actually that good. I mean, it DOES go back and fix all my gripes with MCU Peter Parker and Zendaya sells as always and it was fun to see the old cast back. But uh. Into The Spiderverse did the multiverse thing to better effect, I think. The Audible Pause To Clap for Andrew Garfield's appearance,,,,we'll get to her later. Ultimately, I think Tom Holland is the weakest of the three Spider-Men of recent memory and it shows ESPECIALLY next to Andrew Garfield and without the background of having seen the other Spider-Man franchise incarnations, it's all that much weaker because you don't have the emotional context the film hinges on. It's fanservice for fanservice's sake. And we'll circle back to that. Also how dare you drag Matthew Catholic Sadboy Murdock into this.

Moon Knight (3/30/2022)-- 6.5/10

I hope Oscar Isaac and May Calamawy have gotten excellent treatment for carrying this show on their backs. I don't think Harrow (had to Google the character's name ffs) was strong enough to get by on Malevolent Pacifism alone, and it did just kind of Unravel at the end with the Unnecessary Big Fight & the show kind of just Stopping rather than Ending. Also, did not think it was necessary to TEASE Jake Lockley if he was just going to be in the post-credit scene. I would have rather they not bring him up at all rather than having hints so MASSIVE.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (5/6/2022)-- 3/10

When I left the theater for this movie, I didn't actually think I could hate it more than I did when it was over. Then I watched the Assembled on it. And I realized no, the depths of my hatred DO go deeper. I don't know what's worse-- the struggle of having to choose between the Wanda of WandaVision and the Wanda of the Non-D+ Series MCU and somehow choosing neither, leaving GAPING-WIDE plot holes for the sake of "having the coolest villain in the MCU instead of leaving it for the team of another Avengers movie" (Michael Waldron my detested), whatever the fuck the Illuminati was supposed to be, or bringing back Sam Raimi, who I think genuinely tried to direct something visually his own and artful, only to have him bogged down by Marvel's own capitalistic editing and filming practices. The pauses to clap for the Illuminati. How presumptuous and prideful do you have to be to include space for the audience to clap for your cameos? And I haven't even TALKED about Stephen yet, because there's almost nothing to say except it is a SECOND movie where he is implied to have to face consequences for his choices, only for none to appear because the Wider Canon demands he be fine. It is EVERYTHING the MCU is at its worst.

Not you Bruce Campbell, though, you're doing great.

Ms. Marvel (6/8/2022)-- 8/10

I think the reason Ms. Marvel ranks this well for me is not just the AMAZING attention to detail and authenticity of the creative team and Iman Vellani, but because Kamala Khan in the comics debuted when I myself was an insecure teenager writing fanfiction about my favorite superheroes and trying to survive school. I have a nostalgia for her character specifically that might bias me a little toward her show, but there was something so deeply authentic and warm about Iman's performance that I couldn't help being giddy to see her in every scene, despite the power changes and all the little things that would normally give me gripes.

Thor: Love and Thunder (7/8/2022)-- 5/10

You know that thing you do where you have two foods you really love, like, individually. Like how I like caramel and i like crawfish, which are two things that are great on their own. And then you do that thing where you go "what if I put those two things I like together!" And suddenly you're eating caramel and crawfish together and you wish you hadn't done that?

That's Love & Thunder and that's pretty much the sum of my feelings on it, if I'm honest. Like, I'm a fan of Taika's work and I like the two threads he did here separately, but not together.

She-Hulk: Attorney At Law (8/18/2022)-- 6.5/10

I could talk at length about this show and good-faith criticism and bad-faith criticism and how one can unintentionally legitimize the other, but I think to be succinct I can sum it up here by saying while I had fun, I think the show, despite the efforts of the female-centered & staffed writing room, fell into a lot of traps, like putting a lot of focus on Jen's dating life. To me that was the biggest mistake. Dating can be a very large part of people's lives, but in the show it did feel like the dating parts outweighed the legal parts, which was a shame because this show had SUCH a great cast of actors playing the other lawyers. Tatiana Maslany was great in the role, but I don't think the writing necessarily always held up to the acting, nor did the lampshading of it at the end in that VERY APPROPRIATE AND KIND OF FUN fourth wall break make up for including it in the first place.

Also Augustus Pugliese you have my heart new favorite side character unlocked.

Werewolf By Night (10/14/2022)-- 10/10

Jack Russell you are my new best friend I love spooky things I love that it was self contained I love EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS. No notes. Well done. Blade next.

In Conclusion-- 6.23/10

I think, at this point, I don't really care if MCU Secretly Bad or MCU Actually Good. I think if anything, this phase points to the overall problem for Marvel being that, for the most part, they're feeding us the same thing over and over again. To me, the projects that stuck out the most here were the ones that tried something different. WandaVision experimented with TV tropes. Werewolf By Night was a Hammer horror special.

The ones that scored lowest, however, were either full of shiny but empty distractions or just more of the same.

It's not better than before. It's not worse. You're just too used to eating the same thing.

Are there any elements or character variations from the Spider-Man games that you'd consider introducing into the Kverse?

Definitely! I’ve mentioned before that Peter’s portrayal in the Insomniac games is quite possibly my favorite incarnation of his, and you know I like to cherry pick when it comes to the Kverse (which is basically Victor and Reed’s MO in-universe haha)

The idea is that MCU!Pete is supposed to grow into something like Insomniac’s eventual seasoned Spidey, with a similar personality and approach to crime-fighting (though obviously with a larger support network, from NY’s vigilantes to the Avengers themselves). Obviously, Insomniac!Pete remains a separate character out in the Multiverse, but of the various adult Spideys, he’s the one he’ll most take after eventually.

I also like a lot of the designs, especially with the villains - Scorpion and Rhino immediately come to mind, I know some people aren’t fans of the more tech-y looking Insomniac-verse looks but I think they strike a good balance of the comic book-y accuracy I want and the MCU-esque aesthetic the Kverse mostly calls for. I like the look of Roxxon’s forces, I have a pretty neat idea for a visually similar but functionally pretty different version of the Underground, etc.

I absolutely looove the mentor-protege relationship between Peter and Miles, so I would lean towards that too (though Miles is like, a child in the Kverse rn, so any content with him would be future stuff).

I like Pete’s history with Harry and MJ a lot, so the idea is that they grew up together but Pete is currently a bit out of contact with them since enrolling in Midtown Science, with Gwen and Ned sort of filling that void at the moment. And yes, I do mean Mary Jane, but that doesn’t mean I’m getting rid of Michelle - I like them both, sue me. They’ll be separate characters, and I have some fairly crazy stuff planned for MJ that I don’t think anyone could predict!

There’s definitely a few things I’d avoid, too. Some of the alternate origins or motivations are cool, and work for the Insomniac universe, but aren’t my preferred ones for the Kverse - Venom immediately comes to mind, for example. I also don’t want Kverse!Spider-Man to be anywhere near as tech-y; I’m fine with Pete developing a few different kinds of webbing, and I’m cool with his Starktech suit being the “Avengers business” one, but I would prefer him in spandex and having to navigate crime-fighting with not much more than his web shooters and his wits most of the time. There’ll be no, like, gravity well projectors or Spider Arms for Kverse!Pete anytime soon.
